Passage 12
阅读下列短文,从文后各题所给的四个选项中选出一个最佳答案。
Countries around the world have reached a new climate agreement. For the first time, the 1 clearly calls on countries to move away from using fossil fuels (石化燃料) to create energy. 2 many people say the agreement doesn’t go far enough to protect the planet (行星) from global warming.
The agreement was 3 at COP28 the United Nations climate meeting in Dubai. United Ara Emirates. Representatives (代表) 4 nearly 200 countries took part in the meeting. The 5 was to reach agreements that will help slow global warming.
One of the big questions about COP28 was whether countries would agree to stop producing fossil fuels (called a “phase-out”), or would simply agree to produce less (called a “phase-down”)
Over 100 countries, 6 the United States and the European Union, were pushing for a phase-out. But countries like Saudi Arabia and India 7 this idea. These countries either depend heavily on fossil fuels, or on the money they 8 by selling them.
Because of this disagreement, the final deal doesn’t mention a phase-out or a phase-down. 9 , it calls for “transitioning (转型) away from fossil fuels”. It’s hard to believe, but only a short while ago, our own earth was as huge and unknown as 2 is today. Only 500 years ago, most of the earth was not explored. Sailing too far away from land was as 3 then as it is today for astronauts to sail into outer space.
But humans have always wanted to learn about the world, no matter what the dangers. The great Chinese 4 , Zheng He, proves this point.
In 1405, at the request of the Emperor, he left China for the first of 5 voyages of discovery that he made between 1405 and 1433. The fleet of ships given to Zheng for these voyages was 6 as the “fleet of friendship”, for this was the purpose of his trips.
On each trip Zheng ordered more than 20,000 men on hundreds of ships. He sailed the South China Sea, and 7 the Indian Ocean to eastern Africa. 8 , he visited 30 countries and began trade with them. At each port, the Chinese sailors made 9 with the local people.
On one voyage to 10 , Zheng bought some rare animals for the Emperor. He 11 fair prices for a lion, a leopard, an ostrich, and a giraffe, and then brought them to the Emperor’s palace. On each return visit, the locals remembered the Chinese sailors and 12 them gifts.
It can be said that Zheng’s seven voyages of discovery were important 13 people learned more and more about the earth that lay 14 China’s coast. 15 important, however, were the friendly diplomatic (外交) relations that were begun so long ago. In 1419, seventeen countries sent officers back to China with Zheng. This was the beginning of a long friendship between China and its neighbours in South Asia and beyond to Africa.

Passage 14
It is late at night. A car stops in the middle of a forest. After 1 their teenagers, the parents say “good luck” and drive away. The 2 , totally lost, have to find their way back home by themselves.
It may sound crazy to you, 3 this is an old tradition in the Netherlands called “dropping”. Dutch people believe that children should not 4 their parents too much and should learn how to solve problems through activities like “ 5 ”.
However, for many parents around the world, they are most worried about their children’s 6 . After all, why should they put their children at risk when there are many other ways to learn to be independent (独立的)?
People have many different 7 about parenting. All parents want their children to be 8 , healthy, and successful. In China, for example, many parents spend anywhere from 20,000 to 50,000 yuan on summer vacation activities for their children. 9 want their children to enjoy the vacation as much as possible. But some parents try too hard and become “ 10 parents”, which is basically the opposite of “dropping”. They worry too much about their children and pay attention to everything they do— 11 helicopters (直升机) flying over their children. In their eyes, children need to be 12 all the time.
Neither of the two above is a good 13 style, according to American parenting expert Kenneth Ginsburg. Good parents need to find a 14 between protecting their children and letting go.
