B On a street in Hangzhou, capital of East China’s Zhejiang Province, many people turned to the foreigner in surprise as he started speaking fluently and rapidly — he was practicing local Chinese tongue twisters (绕口令), with each repetition getting louder and louder. It was a common experience with Musab Al Rudaisat, 30, an Arab learner of Chinese cross-talk or xiangsheng, the traditional comedic act that is performed as a dialogue between two performers or as a solo monologue (单口). Al Rudaisat grew up in Jordan and got his PhD in medicine at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou. He came to China to pursue his studies in 2011 and has spent most of his time in the country since. Al Rudaisat has been one of the leading comedians at the city’s Kailehui Cross-talk Club for the past five years. The club performs traditional cross-talk comedy shows at many different locations throughout the city; many people from the younger generation, most comedians in their 30s, participate in the club, which has been dedicated to preserving, innovating and spreading the art and craft of Chinese cross-talk in southern provinces. Al Rudaisat watched countless Chinese reality shows to practice his Mandarin (普通话) skills. “My interest in learning Chinese began when I was still in Jordan,” Al Rudaisat says. When he arrived in China for his studies, he soon began to practice his Chinese-speaking skills whenever he had the chance. He practiced Chinese everywhere — on the streets and on the shores of his campus lake. He was often so focused on practicing his Chinese pronunciations that he did not realize how loudly he spoke. “It is very, very difficult to master Chinese, but my love of uncovering the dense and abundant cultural aspect of China is endless, and mastering the Chinese language has been the best gateway for me to achieve such a goal,” he said. 4. Why were many people on the street surprised at Al Rudaisat? A. He was a foreigner from Arabia. B. He spoke Chinese so fluently and rapidly. C. He was a graduating medical PhD student. D. By learning Chinese culture and language. D. By performing Chinese tongue twisters on streets. C Some people exercise by spending an hour in the pool every day, while others might take just 15 minutes for a HIIT (高强度间歇训练) exercise a couple of times a week, making it hard to know how much exercise is right for you. Knowing exactly how much exercise a person needs isn’t an easy problem, including health situations and personal goals. Truthfully, the answer is that: Some exercise is better than none, and more exercise is usually better than some. In other words, if you aren’t exercising at all, making even just a few minutes of movements in your daily routine (常规) can provide important health advantages. And, if you are not exercising as often as you’d like, adding more exercise to your routine will increase those health advantages. According to the US Department of Health & Human Services and the World Health Organization, adults should have at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity that will benefit the heart and lungs each week. If you can talk comfortably, but not sing, while exercising, you are working at a moderate intensity. In addition, they suggest adults have muscle-strengthening activities twice each week. For most people, however, these guidelines mean long-term goals rather than a starting point. But if you are new to exercise or are less active than those guidelines suggest, your goal should be to do more than you’re now doing and then progress slowly until you reach those activity starting points and beyond. Guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises us to move more and sit less. 8. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph? A. To explain the benefits of HIIT exercise. B. To stress the importance of daily exercise. C. To discuss the advantages of different types of exercise routines. D. To point out it’s challenging to know how much exercise one needs. 9. What should a person who never exercises do according to the text? A. Increase the amount of exercise little by little. B. Find a good coach to offer help for a while. C. Set a high exercise goal to get encouraged. D. Try as much exercise as possible in the beginning. 10. Besides activities good for the heart and lungs, what advice do the experts give to adults? A. Building up their muscles each week. B. Practicing singing while exercising. C. Trying taking a deep breath while exercising. D. Avoiding talking to each other while exercising. 11. In which part of a magazine can we probably read this text? A. Family. B. Health. C. Society. D. Education. D We all know that it’s good to be kind to others. But what does that mean for us? What acts of kindness will make us happiest and who will benefit the most? A new review of kindness research provides some answers. Researchers analyzed the results from 126 research articles looking at almost 200, 000 participants from around the world. The studies they chose all had to meet certain criteria, such as including only adults and reporting good statistical data. Some were experiments while others just surveyed people about how kind and happy they were. The studies measured well-being in many ways, including both mental and physical health. As expected, people who were kind tended to have higher well-being. Although the relationship was not, stronger than it was, lead researcher Bryant Hui was still encouraged by the result. “Although the relationship is weaker, the effect still has a significant impact,” he says. He and his colleagues considered when kindness might have a bigger impact on our well-being. One thing they found was that people who performed random, informal acts of kindness tended to be happier than people who performed more formal acts of kindness. It’s possible that informal helping may fill our more basic psychological needs for close relationships, which is why it could lead to greater happiness. The researchers also found that people who were kind tended to have a higher sense of meaning and purpose in life. Perhaps this makes sense, given that being kind involves effort which makes people feel confident about themselves and their abilities. And that provides a sense of meaning. 12. What is the text mainly about? A. Act of kindness makes us happiest. B. Being kind makes us healthy and happy. C. Random acts of kindness are better than formal ones. D. Doing act of kindness to others improves our abilities. 13. How did the researchers get the finding? A. By doing surveys. B. By carrying out experiments. C. By comparing research data. D. By analyzing results of articles. 14 Why does being kind give people a sense of meaning and purpose in life? A. Because it makes people healthier. B. Because it boosts close relationships. C. Because it improves people’s confidence. D. Because it promotes awareness of responsibility. 15. Where is the text most likely from? A. A diary. B. A guide book. C. A novel. D. A magazine. If you want to improve your relationship with Mom or Dad, try listening to them, just like you would listen to a friend. There were arrangements for guests to enjoy nature and view wild animals roaming (游荡) in nearby places. On the first day of their trip, they saw a small dog while entering the cottage. 根据第一段“On a street in Hangzhou, capital of East China’s Zhejiang Province, many people turned to the foreigner in surprise as he started speaking fluently and rapidly — he was practicing local Chinese tongue twisters, with each repetition getting louder and louder. (在浙江省会杭州的一条街道上,许多人惊讶地转过头来看向这位外国人。只见他开始流利且快速地说话——他正在练习当地的汉语绕口令,每次重复的声音都越来越大。)”可知,街上许多人之所以对Al Rudaisat感到惊讶,是因为他说汉语如此流利和快速。故选B项。 【5题详解】 词句猜测题。根据画线词的上文“many people from the younger generation, most comedians in their 30s (许多来自年轻一代的人,其中大多数是30多岁的喜剧演员)”和下文“which has been dedicated to preserving, innovating and spreading the art and craft of Chinese cross-talk in southern provinces (它一直致力于在南方各省保存、创新和传播中国相声艺术和技艺)”可知,该俱乐部与相声艺术和技艺密切相关,喜剧演员占多数的这一人群应该是加入该俱乐部,画线词意思应该是“加入”。 根据第五段中“Al Rudaisat watched countless Chinese reality shows to practice his Mandarin skills. (Al Rudaisat观看了大量中国的真人秀节目,以此来练习他的普通话水平。)”、“When he arrived in China for his studies, he soon began to practice his Chinese-speaking skills whenever he had the chance. (当他来到中国开始求学时,他很快就利用一切机会练习自己的汉语口语。)”和第六段“He practiced Chinese everywhere — on the streets and on the shores of his campus lake. He was often so focused on practicing his Chinese pronunciations that he did not realize how loudly he spoke. (他无论在哪里都会练习汉语——在街头,在校园湖泊的岸边。他常常过于专注于练习汉语的发音,以至于都没有注意到自己说话的声音有多大。)”可知,Al Rudaisat通过多种方式苦练汉语,专注其中。由此可知,他沉浸在中国文化和语言中。故选D项。 【7题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段中Al Rudaisat所说的话“It is very, very difficult to master Chinese, but my love of uncovering the dense and abundant cultural aspect of China is endless, and mastering the Chinese language has been the best gateway for me to achieve such a goal (掌握汉语是非常非常困难的,但我对探寻中国丰富深厚的文化内涵的热爱是无止境的,而掌握汉语对我来说则是实现这一目标的最佳途径。)” 故选A项。 C Some people exercise by spending an hour in the pool every day, while others might take just 15 minutes for a HIIT (高强度间歇训练) exercise a couple of times a week, making it hard to know how much exercise is right for you. 8 What is the main purpose of the first paragraph? A. Family. B. Health. C. Society. D. Education. D 9. A 10. A 11. 根据第一段中的“Some people exercise by spending an hour in the pool every day, while others might take just 15 minutes for a HIIT (高强度间歇训练) exercise a couple of times a week, making it hard to know how much exercise is right for you. (有些人每天在泳池里锻炼一小时,而有些人可能每周只做几次15分钟的高强度间歇训练,这让人们很难知道多少运动量才适合自己。)”可知,第一段的主要目的是指出人们很难确定自己需要多少运动量。故选D项。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“In other words, if you aren’t exercising at all, making even just a few minutes of movements in your daily routine (常规) can provide important health advantages. (换句话说,如果你根本不锻炼,那么在日常生活中哪怕只是运动几分钟,也能带来重要的健康益处。)”以及第五段中的“But if you are new to exercise or are less active than those guidelines suggest, your goal should be to do more than you’re now doing and then progress slowly until you reach those activity starting points and beyond. (但如果你刚开始锻炼,或者运动量低于指南建议的水平,你的目标应该是比现在做得更多,然后慢慢进步,直到达到并超过这些运动标准。)”可知,从不锻炼的人应该逐渐增加运动量。故选A项。 根据第四段中的“According to the US Department of Health & Human Services and the World Health Organization, adults should have at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity that will benefit the heart and lungs each week. If you can talk comfortably, but not sing, while exercising, you are working at a moderate intensity. In addition, they suggest adults have muscle-strengthening activities twice each week. (根据美国卫生与公众服务部和世界卫生组织的建议,成年人每周应至少进行150分钟的中等强度有氧运动,这类运动对心肺有益。运动时如果你能轻松交谈但不能唱歌,就说明处于中等强度运动状态。此外,他们建议成年人每周进行两次肌肉强化运动。)”可知,除了心肺有益的运动外,专家还建议成年人每周进行肌肉锻炼。故选A项。 D We all know that it’s good to be kind to others. 14. Why does being kind give people a sense of meaning and purpose in life? A. Because it makes people healthier. B. Because it boosts close relationships. C. Because it improves people’s confidence. D. Because it promotes awareness of responsibility. 15. Where is the text most likely from? A. A diary. B. A guide book. C. A novel. D. A magazine.
