Port Lympne Reserve, which runs a breeding (繁育) programme, has welcomed the arrival of a rare black rhino calf (犀牛幼崽). When the tiny creature arrived on January 31, she became the 40th black rhino to be born at the reserve. And officials at Port Lympne were delighted with the new arrival, especially as black rhinos are known for being difficult to breed in captivity (圈养).
Paul Beer, head of rhino section at Port Lympne, said: “Obviously we’re all absolutely delighted to welcome another calf to our black rhino family. She’s healthy, strong and already eager to play and explore. Her mother, Solio, is a first-time mum and she is doing a fantastic job. It’s still a little too cold for them to go out into the open, but as soon as the weather warms up, I have no doubt that the little one will be out and about exploring and playing every day.”
The adorable female calf is the second black rhino born this year at the reserve, but it is too early to tell if the calves will make good candidates to be returned to protected areas of the wild. The first rhino to be born at Port Lympne arrived on January 5 to first-time mother Kisima and weighed about 32kg. His mother, grandmother and great grandmother were all born at the reserve and still live there.
According to the World Wildlife Fund, the global black rhino population has dropped as low as 5500, giving the rhinos a “critically endangered” status.
24. Which of the following best describes the breeding programme?
A. Costly. B. Controversial. C. Ambitious. D. Successful.
25. What does Paul Beer say about the new-born rhino?
A. She loves staying with her mother. B. She dislikes outdoor activities.
C. She is in good condition D. She is sensitive to heat.
26. What similar experience do Solio and Kisima have?
A. They had their first born in January. B. They enjoyed exploring new places
C. They lived with their grandmothers. D. They were brought to the reserve young
27. What can be inferred about Port Lympne Reserve?
A. The rhino section will be open to the public.
B. It aims to control the number of the animals.
C. It will continue to work with the World Wildlife Fund.
D. Some of its rhinos may be sent to the protected wild areas.
【答案】24. D 25. C 26. A 27. D

Spiders are master builders, expertly turning silk into complex 3D webs that serve as their home and hunting ground. To gain a deeper understanding of their world, scientists have translated the structure of a spider’s web into music, which could have applications ranging from better 3D printers to cross-species communication.
“The spider lives in an environment of vibrating (振动的) strings,” says Markus Buehler, the project’s principal investigator. “They don’t see very well, so they perceive their surroundings by detecting vibrations, which have different frequencies.” Such vibrations occur, for example, when the spider stretches a strand of silk during construction or when the wind or a trapped fly moves the web.
The researchers scanned a natural spider web to capture 2D cross-sections and reconstructed its 3D network using a mathematical model. They assigned different frequencies of sound to strands of the web, creating musical “notes” that they combined in patterns based on the web’s 3D structure to generate music. Then they made a harp-like (像竖琴的) virtual instrument and played the spider web music in several live performances around the world, creating an inspiring harmony of art and science.
To gain insights into how spiders build webs, the researchers also scanned a web during construction, transforming each stage into music with different sounds. “The spider’s way of ‘printing’ the web is remarkable because no support material is used, as is often needed in current 3D printing methods,” Buehler says. This knowledge could help develop new 3D printers that work like spiders, enabling them to construct complex structures without using additional materials for support.
The team is also interested in learning how to communicate with spiders in their own language. They recorded web vibrations produced when spiders performed different activities, such as building a web, communicating with other spiders or sending signals to admirers. “Now we’re trying to generate signals to basically speak the language of the spider,” Buehler says. “If we expose them to certain patterns of vibrations, can we affect what they do or can we begin to communicate with them? Those are really thrilling ideas, and I believe they could be achieved in the near future.”

根据第二段中“They don’t see very well, so they perceive their surroundings by detecting vibrations, which have different frequencies.( 它们视力不太好,所以它们通过检测振动来感知周围环境,这些振动具有不同的频率)”可知,蜘蛛看不太清楚,所以它们凭借探测不同频率的振动来感知周围环境。故选D项。
【29题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“The researchers scanned a natural spider web to capture 2D cross-sections and reconstructed its 3D network using a mathematical model. They assigned different frequencies of sound to strands of the web, creating musical “notes” that they combined in patterns based on the web’s 3D structure to generate music. Then they made a harp-like (像竖琴的) virtual instrument and played the spider web music in several live performances around the world, creating an inspiring harmony of art and science.( 研究人员扫描了一张天然蜘蛛网,以获取二维横截面,并使用数学模型重建了其三维网络。他们为蛛丝的不同部分赋予不同的声音频率,创造出音乐“音符”,然后根据蛛网的三维结构以特定的模式将这些音符组合起来,从而生成音乐。随后,他们制作了一种类似竖琴的虚拟乐器,并在全球多地进行了几场现场演出,演奏了蜘蛛网音乐,从而创造出了一种艺术与科学相融合的动人和谐景象)”可知,第三段主要讲的是研究人员如何将蜘蛛网转化为音乐的过程。故选A项。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词组上文“The spider’s way of ‘printing’ the web is remarkable because no support material is used, as is often needed in current 3D printing methods.(蜘蛛‘打印’网的方式令人惊叹,因为它们不使用任何支撑材料,而这是当前大多数3D打印方法所必需的)”可知,划线部分“This knowledge”指代的是前一句提到的蜘蛛织网的特点——不需要使用支撑材料,这种知识有助于开发新的3D打印技术。故选C项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Those are really thrilling ideas, and I believe they could be achieved in the near future.( 这些想法确实非常令人兴奋,而且我相信它们在未来不久就能实现)”可知,布勒认为与蜘蛛交流是“令人兴奋的想法”,并且相信在不久的将来可以实现。由此推知,这表明他的态度是充满希望的。故选A项。

The streets, sidewalks and roofs of cities all absorb heat during the day, making some urban areas across the United States up to 6 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than rural ones during the day—and 22 degrees F hotter at night. These “urban heat islands” can also develop underground as the city heat spreads downward, beneath the surface. And basements, subway tunnels and other underground infrastructure also constantly bleed heat into the surrounding earth, creating hotspots. Now the underground heat is building up as the planet warms.
According to a new study of downtown Chicago, underground hotspots may threaten the very same structures that emit the heat in the first place. Such temperature changes make the ground around them expand and contract (收缩) enough to cause potential damage. “Without anyone realizing it, the city of Chicago’s downtown was deforming,” says the study’s author Alessandro F. Rotta Loria, a civil and environmental engineer at Northwestern University.
The findings, published in Communications Engineering, expose a “silent hazard (危险)” to civil infrastructure in cities with soft er ground — especially those near water — Rotta Loria says. “There might have been structural issues caused by this underground climate change that happened, and we didn’t even realize,” he adds. While not an immediate or direct danger to human lives, this previously unknown effect highlights the impacts of a lesser-known component of climate change.
Similar to climate change above the surface, these underground changes occur over long periods of time. “These effects took decades, a century, to develop,” Rotta Loria says, adding that elevated underground temperatures would likewise take a long time to dissipate (逐渐消失) on their own.
But other researchers interviewed for this story all say this wasted energy could also be recycled, presenting an opportunity to both cool the subsurface and save on energy costs. Subway tunnels and basements could be updated with technologies to recapture the heat. For example, water pipes could be installed to run through underground hotspots and pick up some of the heat energy.
32. What can we learn about the “urban heat islands”?
A. They can develop underground structures.
B. They are impacted by global warming.
C. They can destroy the ground around.
D. They only exist in the United States.
33. Why does Alessandro F. Rotta Loria mention “silent hazard” in paragraph 3?
A. To discuss structural issues.
B. To categorize climate change.
C. To explain underground heat.
D. To emphasize the neglected reality.
34. What will the author probably write about in the paragraph that follows?
A. The future of tunnels and basements.
B. The reusing approaches of heat energy.
C. The cost of maintaining structures.
D. The evolution of underground environment.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Warming Underground, Weakening Surface
B. A Silver Lining of Global Warming
C. Urban Silent Islands in the Making
D. A Silent Crisis in Downtown Chicago
【答案】32. B 33. D 34. B 35. A
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了地下气候变暖对城市地面建筑的负面影响的隐蔽性与长期性,以及介绍潜在的解决方案.
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段最后一句话“Now the underground heat is building up as the planet warms. (现在随着地球变暖,地下热量正在积聚)”可知,“城市热岛”是受到全球气候变暖的影响。故选B。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中 Alessandro F. Rotta Loria所说的““There might have been structural issues caused by this underground climate change that happened, and we didn’t even realize(发生的这种地下气候变化可能已经造成了建筑结构上的问题,我们甚至没有意识到)”以及最后一句话“While not an immediate or direct danger to human lives, this previously unknown effect highlights the impacts of a lesser-known component of climate change.(虽然这不是对人类生命的直接或直接威胁,但这种以前未知的影响突显了气候变化中一个鲜为人知的组成部分的影响)”可推知,提出“无声的危险”是想强调地下气候变暖这一被人忽略的事实。故选D。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“But other researchers interviewed for this story all say this wasted energy could also be recycled, presenting an opportunity to both cool the subsurface and save on energy costs. Subway tunnels and basements could be updated with technologies to recapture the heat. For example, water pipes could be installed to run through underground hotspots and pick up some of the heat energy.(但接受采访的其他研究人员都表示,这些浪费的能源也可以回收利用,这为冷却地下和节省能源成本提供了机会。
故选A。

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a sunny Friday morning, Mr. Stone, the Grade 4 head teacher, walked into the classroom with a new student following him. She was a lively girl from Mexico, and her red mushroom hair cut immediately drew everyone’s eyes. With a welcoming smile, Mr. Stone gestured for her to sit beside Mike, a student known for teasing others.
During break time, Mike couldn’t help but laugh when he caught sight of his new deskmate. Sara’s distinctive hairstyle seemed like an open invitation for him to make fun of her. Leaning in towards Sara, he playfully suggested, “Hey, Sara. Ever thought about changing your name to Dora? You look just like Dora the Explorer!” His words caused laughter and cheers from the others in the classroom.
Sara’s eyes filled with tears, her cheeks turning red with embarrassment. Feeling hurt and upset, she stood up suddenly, rushing to the teacher’s office to seek support from Mr. Stone. After hearing her story, Mr. Stone offered her gentle comfort, saying, “Sara, your hairstyle is truly pretty. Remember, everyone has their own sense of beauty.”
Mr. Stone then directed his attention to Mike, expressing his disappointment and urging Mike to apologize to Sara. “Mike,” he continued, “your actions were unkind. We must treat everyone with empathy(同情). Laughing at Sara’s hair has deeply hurt her.”
This conflict was temporarily settled, but Mr. Stone found himself lost in thought. Reflecting on his own childhood, Mr. Stone recalled how he had been teased for being overweight. 【答案】On Monday morning, Mike unwillingly approached the classroom. Feeling nervous and embarrassed, his heart was heavy with worry that his classmates would tease him. His hair had been cut so short that the skin under the hair was nearly visible. As he stepped through the door, the room erupted in giggles, nicknaming him “Baldy.” A few curious boys came up and attempted to touch his newly shaved head. Overwhelmed by shame and anger, Mike shouted out, “You are mean!” Tears welled up in his eyes as Mike stood up and ran towards the door.
At that moment, Mr. Stone walked into the classroom with a ball of paper. With a gentle pat on Mike’s shoulder, he guided him back to his seat. As Mr. Stone made his way to the platform, the room fell silent. Holding up the crumpled ball of paper, he began to smooth out its wrinkles. “Each fold represented a scar of hurtful words. Even when we try to apologize,” Mr. Stone explained softly, “the wounds remain. Let us always speak with kindness and warmth.” From that day on, Mike learned a valuable lesson: the importance of kindness and empathy.

28. What kind of inspiration can we get from author’s view of spiders ?
A. Spiders have good eyesight.
B. Spiders adapt to surroundings quickly.
C. Spiders spin a web similar to a musical structure.
D. Spiders sense the environment through vibrations.
29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Steps to create spider web music.
B. Ways to recreate a web’s 3D network.
C. Challenges of combining music with science.
D. The potential applications of 3D printing methods.
30. What do the underlined words “This knowledge” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. 3D printers can construct complex structures.
B. Spiders’ vibration patterns vary with activities.
C. Spiders build webs without using additional materials.
D. The web-building process can be translated into music.
31. What is Buehler’ attitude towards communicating with spiders?
A. Hopeful. B. Doubtful. C. Uncertain. D. Disapproving.

The pain caused by hurtful words was like wrinkles on a crumpled(压皱的)ball of paper. Even if you smoothed them out, the wrinkles stayed.
He wanted to teach an important lesson to Mike, the troublemaker. Then, a unique strategy came to mind. He contacted Mike’s mother, explaining the situation and discussing a plan with her to develop empathy in her son. They agreed that over the weekend, Mike’s mother would arrange for Mike to have his hair cut extremely short.
