It refers to the long-term rise in the average temperature of the Earth’s climate system, primarily due to human activities such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation. As the climate warms, it leads to a variety of environmental impacts including the melting of ice caps, rising sea levels, and extreme weather events. One significant consequence of global warming is the melting of glacier ice. This not only causes sea levels to rise but also threatens coastal communities with flooding and erosion. For instance, islands in the Pacific Ocean are already experiencing the effects as their land slowly disappears beneath the waves. Moreover, global warming is responsible for more frequent and severe weather events. Increased temperatures can lead to more intense storms, floods, and droughts, disrupting ecosystems and human societies. In the United States, hurricanes have become more powerful with greater rainfall, leading to significant damage and loss of life. Addressing global warming requires international cooperation and individual efforts. Countries worldwide need to work together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and develop sustainable energy sources. Meanwhile, individuals can make a difference by reducing energy consumption, supporting green initiatives, and raising awareness about climate issues. To combat global warming effectively, it’s essential for everyone to acknowledge the problem and take action before it’s too late. 4. Which of the following causes global warming according to the article? A. Deforestation and burning fossil fuels. B. Much use of chemicals in agriculture. C. Nuclear energy production. D. Overfishing in the oceans. 5. What is one effect of glacier melting mentioned in the passage? A. Rise in agricultural productivity. B. Creation of new land habitats. C. Threats to coastal communities. D. Decrease in desert areas. 6. How has global warming affected weather patterns? A. It has made winters milder. B. It has made summers cooler. C. Bad weather events happened more often. D. It has decreased the number of sunny days. 7. What action is suggested in the article as part of addressing global warming? A. Relocating coastal residents. B. Constructing more sea barriers. C. Increasing nuclear energy production. D. Developing sustainable energy sources. 4. A 5. C 6. C 7. She suffered brain cancer and her health got worse despite some medical treatment. But she realized that in a way, she was luckier than some other people. She had insurance to help pay for her medical care. But Ms. McIntyre and her husband, Mr. Gregory, knew that many people with cancer face tough decisions because of the costs of medical care and wind up owing far more than they can pay. Though her health was failing, Ms. McIntyre decided to help pay off the medical debts of as many people as she possibly could. The couple began donating money to a group called RIP Medical Debt, which is committed to working to pay off the unpaid medical debts of others. The group can pay off medical bills for about 100 times less money than they cost. In other words, for every 100 donated, the group can pay off 10,000 in unpaid medical bills. Unfortunately, Ms. McIntyre passed away before long. Mr. Gregory posted a message for Ms. McIntyre on her social media accounts. “If you’re reading this, I have passed away,” the post began. Then the post explained, “To celebrate my life, I’ve arranged to buy up others’ medical debts and then destroy the debts.” The couple had set up a page on a website to raise money for this purpose. They had hoped to raise about $20,000. Nevertheless, Ms. McIntyre’s last post attracted a lot of attention. The donations on her web page quickly passed the total goal. In less than a week, the site had raised 10 times more than expected and the donations are still coming in. By November 22, 2023, Ms. McIntyre’s web page had raised over $627,000, or enough money to pay off about $60 million in medical debts. Mr. Gregory planned a special event in December to celebrate Ms. McIntyre’s life and to announce how many millions of dollars of medical debts her efforts had paid for. 8. Why did Ms. McIntyre feel luckier than some other people? A. The doctors eventually cured her. B. Her disease didn’t become worse. C. She had medical insurance. D. She had a decent job before being ill. 9. How did Ms. McIntyre and her husband help others? A. By paying for their daily debts. B. By giving away money to them. C. By purchasing medical insurance for them. D. By ridding them of debts from treatments. 10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A. The couple’s anticipation. B. The public involvement. C. The operation of a website. D. The increase of medical debts. 11. Which of the following words can best describe Ms. McIntyre? A. Influential and understanding. B. Humorous and elegant. C. Cautious and promising. D. Enthusiastic and adaptable. C 9. D 10. B 11. 根据第一段中“But she realized that in a way, she was luckier than some other people. She had insurance to help pay for her medical care. (但她意识到,在某种程度上,她比其他人更幸运。她有保险来帮助支付医疗费用)”可知,McIntyre女士觉得自己比其他一些人要幸运得多,因为她有医疗保险。故选C。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“Though her health was failing, Ms. McIntyre decided to help pay off the medical debts of as many people as she possibly could. The couple began donating money to a group called RIP Medical Debt, which is committed to working to pay off the unpaid medical debts of others. (尽管健康状况越来越差,McIntyre女士还是决定帮助尽可能多的人偿还医疗债务。这对夫妇开始向一个名为“终结医疗债务”的组织捐款,该组织致力于帮助他人偿还未付的医疗债务)”可知,McIntyre夫妇通过帮助他人摆脱治疗产生的债务来提供援助。故选D。 【10题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第四段中“Nevertheless, Ms. McIntyre’s last post attracted a lot of attention. The donations on her web page quickly passed the total goal. In less than a week, the site had raised 10 times more than expected and the donations are still coming in. (然而,McIntyre女士的最后一条帖子引起了广泛关注。她网页上的捐款迅速超过了总目标。在不到一周的时间里,该网站筹集的资金是预期的10倍,捐款还在不断涌入)”可知,该段主要讲述了公众积极参与捐款的情况。故选B。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段中“But Ms. McIntyre and her husband, Mr. Gregory, knew that many people with cancer face tough decisions because of the costs of medical care and wind up owing far more than they can pay. (但McIntyre女士和她的丈夫Gregory先生知道,许多癌症患者因为医疗费用面临艰难抉择,最终欠下远超其偿还能力的债务)”可知,McIntyre女士体谅他人困境,十分善解人意;再根据第四段她的帖子引发公众广泛响应,筹集到巨额捐款可知,她极具影响力。由此推知,A选项“Influential and understanding(有影响力和理解他人的)”最能描述她。故选A。 D Our culture is addicted to collective goal setting and the idea that forming new habits during specific times of the year will lead to successful outcomes. But it turns out there’s no real evidence that it is the case. In fact, research suggests that only two people in ten stick with their New Year’s resolutions long term. “I am aware of no research showing that starting fresh in January or October or any other month makes you more likely to stick with a new behaviour,” says Wendy Wood, a behavioural psychologist at the University of Southern California. The reality is that, when it comes to establishing new habits, there really is an ideal time to do it — but it might not be when you think. Wood calls such ideal moments “turning points” — such as an upcoming high school reunion causing you to want to lose a few pounds, or over-drafting (透支) your bank account and realizing it is time to improve your career. He says such moments tend to provide lasting feelings of motivation because they are rooted in something meaningful and more in-depth than just going along with everyone else. Regardless of what promotes your motivation, Wood says it is critical to take action as soon as you feel the desire because you may only have a short window of opportunity to make decisions about what you want to do before your old habits get in the way. For instance, write out a daily schedule that includes time for your new habit and post it where you’ll see it each morning. You might also join a gym while your motivation is high to lock yourself into a monthly payment that will keep you motivated to use the membership even after your interest in getting in shape begins to cool. Another strategy for successful habit formation is breaking down bigger goals into smaller, more specific ones. So instead of saying “I’m going to lose 10 pounds a month”, set a goal to limit your daily calorie intake and get to the gym for 30 minutes a day. 12. What is Wood’s attitude toward making New Year’s resolutions? A. Doubtful. B. Approving. C. Casual. D. Objective. 13. Which of the following examples can be called a “turning point”? A. Falling ill from heavy work. B. Fulfilling a long-held dream. C. Exercising on a regular basis. D. Receiving New Year’s wishes. 14. What plays a leading role in reaching one’s goal according to Wood? A. Motivation. B. Determination. C. Opportunity. D. Action. 15. What is this text mainly about? A. Strategies for setting a collective goal. B. Procedures for finding a turning point. C. Approaches to developing a new habit. D. Methods of making a New Year’s wish. A 13. A 14. D 15. 根据第二段的““I am aware of no research showing that starting fresh in January or October or any other month makes you more likely to stick with a new behaviour,” says Wendy Wood, a behavioural psychologist at the University of Southern California.(南加州大学的行为心理学家温迪・伍德说:“我没有发现任何研究表明,在1月、10月或其他任何月份重新开始,会让你更有可能坚持一种新行为。”)” 故选A。 根据第三段的“Wood calls such ideal moments “turning points” — such as an upcoming high school reunion causing you to want to lose a few pounds, or over-drafting (透支) your bank account and realizing it is time to improve your career.(伍德称这些理想时刻为“转折点”——比如即将到来的高中同学聚会让你想减掉几磅体重,或者透支了你的银行账户,然后意识到是时候改善你的职业了)”可推知,“因繁重的工作而生病”这种情况可能会促使人们改变生活方式等,可被称为 “转折点”。故选A。 根据第四段的“Regardless of what promotes your motivation, Wood says it is critical to take action as soon as you feel the desire because you may only have a short window of opportunity to make decisions about what you want to do before your old habits get in the way.(不管是什么激发了你的动力,伍德说,一旦你有了这种欲望,立即采取行动是至关重要的,因为在你的旧习惯阻碍你之前,你可能只有很短的机会来决定你想做什么)”可知,根据Wood的说法,在实现目标的过程中,采取行动起着主导作用。 通读全文,结合第一段中“Our culture is addicted to collective goal setting and the idea that forming new habits during specific times of the year will lead to successful outcomes.(我们的文化沉迷于设定集体目标,并认为在一年中的特定时期养成新习惯将会带来成功的结果)”以及最后一段中“Another strategy for successful habit formation is breaking down bigger goals into smaller, more specific ones. (成功养成习惯的另一个策略是将更大的目标分解成更小、更具体的目标)”可知,本文主要讲述了如何成功养成新习惯的方法和策略。故选C。 第二节(每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The Power of “Like” Like it or love it, social media is a major part of life. Teens spend more than half of their waking hours online. And most of what they do is read and respond to posts by friends and family. Clicking on a thumbs-up is an easy way to stay in touch. ____16____ Clicking “like” on a post can increase the number of people who see it. If other people have liked a post, new viewers will be more likely to like it too. ____17____ As a result, that popularity can feed on itself. What’s more, viewing one’s own posts with a lot of likes activates the reward system in their brains. Positive responses to teens’ own photos (in the form of many “likes”) tell them that their friends appreciate the material they’re posting. ____18____ Seeing someone else’s popular photo, however, doesn’t necessarily turn it on. ____19____ In one 2011 study, teens doing driving task in a lab took more risks when their friends were around, which suggested that teens were changing their behavior to try to get social approval. And they make similar changes when using social media according to a research conducted last year. The research showed that popular photos might signal to teens that what’s in those photos is socially acceptable. For example, images related to alcohol may encourage teens to drink. That means that what you like online has the power to influence not just what others like, but even what they do. Joining social media can give people a sense of being in the know. However, posts may exaggerate (夸张) how well our friends and others are feeling, making them appear much happier than we are. ____20____ A. It can also lower the viewer’s self-control. B. Teens use it to learn how to handle their social world. C. Many social media sites share more of the higher-ranked posts. D. It’s no surprise that responses from peers affect how teens behave. E. Their brains respond to those “likes” by turning on the reward center. F. And that can, inappropriately, make us feel less successful than them. G. But those “likes” can have power that goes beyond a simple connection. G 17. C 18. E 19. D 20. 【16题详解】 上文“Clicking on a thumbs-up is an easy way to stay in touch.(点赞是保持联系的一种简单方式)”说明点赞是一种比较简单的保持联系方式,G项“但这些“赞”的力量可以超越简单的联系”与其紧密衔接,“a simple connection”与“an easy way to stay in touch”相呼应,并引出文章的主题,符合语境。故选G。 【17题详解】 根据上文“Clicking “like” on a post can increase the number of people who see it. If other people have liked a post, new viewers will be more likely to like it too.(在帖子上点击“喜欢”可以增加看到它人数。如果其他人点赞了一个帖子,新观众也更有可能点赞)”以及后文“As a result, that popularity can feed on itself.(因此,这种受欢迎程度可以靠自己来维持)”可知,本句是在说明点赞多的帖子对后文受欢迎程度之间的关系,故C选项“许多社交媒体网站分享更多排名较高的帖子”符合语境,故选C。 【18题详解】 上文“What’s more, viewing one’s own posts with a lot of likes activates the reward system in their brains. Positive responses to teens’ own photos (in the form of many “likes”) tell them that their friends appreciate the material they’re posting.(更重要的是,看到自己的帖子有很多点赞,会激活他们大脑中的奖励系统。对青少年自己照片的积极回应(以许多赞的形式)告诉他们,他们的朋友很欣赏他们发布的材料)”提到青少年看到自己的帖子被点赞会激活他们大脑的奖励系统,E项“他们的大脑通过打开奖励中心来对这些赞做出反应”承接上文,符合语境。故选E。 【19题详解】 下文“In one 2011 study, teens doing driving task in a lab took more risks when their friends were around, which suggested that teens were changing their behavior to try to get social approval.(在2011年的一项研究中,青少年在实验室里做驾驶任务时,当他们的朋友在身边时,他们冒了更多的风险,这表明青少年正在改变他们的行为,试图获得社会的认可)”说明青少年有朋友在身边时,他们会改变自己的行为,D项“毫不奇怪,来自同龄人的反馈会影响青少年的行为”与举例说明的内容吻合,符合语境。故选D。 【20题详解】 根据空前的“But posts may exaggerate (夸大) how well our friends and others are feeling, making them appear much happier than we are.(但是帖子可能会夸大我们的朋友和其他人的感觉,使他们看起来比我们快乐得多)”可知,帖子可能会使得他们看起来比我们更快乐,F选项“And that can, inappropriately, make us feel less successful than them.(这可能会不恰当地让我们觉得自己不如他们成功)”中描述的内容与空前内容相对应,且其中的代词them以及us空前内容指代一致。 Growing up in Yongfeng village, Jin Wanting cherished untroubled days in childhood. And as the only man of the family, he had been preparing himself to take his responsibility. He once wanted to quit school to find some kind of job to lessen his mother’s burden, but was seriously refused. One day, on the way home after school, Henry spotted a wallet lying under a pile of leaves. He opened it carefully, finding it was full of money! But it was dark now, and the empty street in the cold winter saw on one around. Henry might have kept all the money, for no one saw him when he found it. But his mother had taught him to be honest, and never to keep what did not belong to him. So he decided to wait in the freezing wind. After what seemed a century later, there finally came back the worried and hurrying owner . The man was more than delighted to get back the lost wallet. “It was such a surprise!” the man said, “ I held no hope for it at all. C Ms. McIntyre, 38, worked as a publisher. A The couple’s anticipation. B. The public involvement. C. The operation of a website. D. The increase of medical debts. 11. Which of the following words can best describe Ms. McIntyre? A. Influential and understanding. B. Humorous and elegant. C. Cautious and promising. D. Enthusiastic and adaptable. D Our culture is addicted to collective goal setting and the idea that forming new habits during specific times of the year will lead to successful outcomes. Another strategy for successful habit formation is breaking down bigger goals into smaller more specific ones. 第二节(每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The Power of “Like” Like it or love it, social media is a major part of life.
