Learning English Beyond the Classroom There are many things we can do to learn English well. To learn more about how senior high school students learn English after class, our school English newspaper is holding a heated discussion, whose theme is “Learning English Beyond the Classroom”. The following are the results of a survey connected to the discussion. The percentage of students who choose to listen to English songs and watch English movies is respectively 65% and 50%, while those choosing to read books in English and browse English learning websites only account for 18% and 12%. From what has been said above, we can safely draw a conclusion that most students prefer to choose more relaxing and interesting ways to learn English beyond the classroom. As far as I am concerned, as long as we do more listening, speaking, reading and writing after school, we will learn English well. 67. A sudden silence fell over the room, and both Linda and Tom sat in shock. Tomˈs fingers trembled as he put down his smartphone, the screen going dark like a curtain closing. He looked at Linda, whose teary face mirrored his own guilt. “Weˈve been so blind, right?” he whispered. Linda nodded, holding the paper tightly in her hand. Without another word, they both stood up and walked to Mikeˈs room. Linda hesitated at the door, and then softly asked, “Mike? Can we talk?” Tom stood beside her, silently promising to change. Mike looked up in surprise when he saw his parentsˈ reddened eyes. “Whatˈs wrong with you?” he asked, his voice filled with concern. Then Tom said softly, “We have read your wish, honey. And... weˈre so sorry.” Linda hugged Mike tightly, saying, “From now on, weˈll put away our smartphones. Weˈll read you bedtime stories every night, sweetheart.” Mikeˈs eyes widened. “Really?” he asked. Linda nodded firmly, “Yes, really. Weˈll be with you every night.” At that moment, Mike jumped up, a broad smile spreading across his face. W: I really had a bad night's sleep. M: Are you okay? You're not sick, are you? W: No, I'll be okay. I listened to music to drown out the sound of my neighbour's dog. M: And the birds this morning probably stopped you from sleeping in. 2. M: Did you get the directions? W: Yes. Turn left out of here, take the M35 to the south, and then the M80 to the east. Oh. Careful! You almost hit a piece of tire in the road. 3. W: Jack, do you realize that you came late again this morning? M: Yes, I'm so sorry about that. It's the subway. Whenever it rains there's a delay. W: Well, it's not like you're the only one here who takes the trains. 4. W: I'd like to arrange to have my car serviced. M: Yes, of course. How would next Friday afternoon suit you? W: That'd be perfect. And could you also try to improve the starting? M: Yes, we'll do that as a matter of course. 5. W: I've already spoken to the boss about the budget and she agreed to a ten-percent increase. M: In order to make this a successful event, we should at least have an increase of twenty-five percent. W: But I doubt if it would fly with the boss. 6~7. . W: I remember promising to take you to the accountant's office today, but I forgot what time you wanted to go there. M: I think we originally said 3 p.m. but my appointment was moved up. Could we leave half an hour earlier? W: You bet. 2:30 p.m. works better for me because a customer is coming at 4 p.m. and I have a few things I need to prepare before that. 8~9.. W: How's your Spanish coming along? Are you still practicing daily? M: Yeah, for an hour. It's improved from greetings to basic conversations. W: Great! Do you recommend any apps? M: Absolutely, there's one named Pedro. And I listen to local news sometimes, but nothing beats chatting with people at the local Spanish cafe. W: And it is handy in Spain too, right? M: Absolutely. By engaging myself in the culture, I'll truly become a part of the local community. It's important to have a genuine experience rather than just being a tourist. W: That sounds amazing. I'm planning to visit Barcelona next year too. Maybe I should start learning Spanish as well. M: Definitely! 10~12. . M: When we've finished this game, do you fancy getting some pizza? W: Yeah, I think there's one, Pizza Delight, next to the cinema on the way to the city center. M: Oh, I've seen it! How's the pizza? W: I mean, it's pizza you know. It's not bad but nothing fancy. They're cheap and generous with the toppings. Not like that one near your house which is pretty bad. M: Haha, yeah, you're right. W: When would you like to go? M: Well, it's quarter to 7 now, considering we need to be at Simon's at 9 and we'll have to wait for them to cook it, so we need to leave soon ... Half an hour, okay? W: A quarter of an hour will be about right, I think. It'll be better to get there earlier rather than later. M: Yeah, you're right! If we're early, we'll have more time to get ready to go out after. 13~16.. M: Today I have with me Lily Jenkins, who will be talking to me about windsurfing. First of all, Lily, do you need to spend a lot of time practicing before you're any good at it? W: I suppose it mostly depends on the individual fitness. Previous experience in related sports may also be a contributing factor. Interestingly, buying expensive, high-quality boards doesn't seem to make much difference. M: Do you have any tips about safety? W: Yes, let somebody on shore know what time you're due back and, just in case the rescue services have to search for you, what colors your board and sail are so they know it's you. M: What is it about windsurfing that gives you most pleasure? W: Oh lots of things, such as becoming physically fitter, or discovering how to do things I'd never tried before. But if I had to choose one it'd be the way it lets you empty your mind of all the stress and concerns of daily life. M: Finally, Lily, how do you see your future in windsurfing? W: Well, I've thought of coaching but that would mean spending a lot of time in practice pools, whereas the place I like to be is the open sea, perhaps racing other people. M: Thank you, Lily. 17~20.. W: The shop will be open from 9:00 a.m. this Saturday and if you go along to the opening then you'll have the chance to meet the national 400 meters running champion Paul King, who's coming along to open the shop, and he will be staying around until midday to chat to his fans. There will be a whole range of special attractions on Sunday. There will be free tickets for local sporting events for the first 50 customers, and also a special competition open to all. Just answer fifteen out of the twenty sports questions correctly to win a signed copy of Paul King's CD Spring Tips, while the champion gets a year's free membership of the Bradcaster Gym. All competitors will receive a special Sports calendar with details of all Bradcaster sports events in the coming year. One of the special opening offers is a fitness test done in the shop by qualified staff. This would normally cost £30 but is available at half price for this month only. There are only a limited number of places available for this, so to make a booking phone 560341. In addition, if you open an account you get lots more special offers including the chance to try out equipment at special opening evenings... 21~23. 1. 21根据第一段中“I was 18 when I arrived in London. I'd been working for my dad's restaurant in France and I wanted a new experience.(我18岁时来到伦敦,在法国为我父亲的餐馆工作,我想要一种新的体验。)” 22. 根据第二段中“It was no difference every day. Then one day on my lunch break, I saw a Gymbox. When I took a look in, there was an amazing Muay Thai (泰拳) class. I used to do boxing when I was 15 but I wasn't that serious about it. There and then I joined the gym and signed up for the Thai boxing team.(每天都一样。 故选A。 23. 根据最后一段中“If you put in 100%, you'll get there. I'm just happy because I did a positive thing with my life. After studying agriculture, ...Which kinds of fish can eat cancer-causing chemicals?(在大学学习了农业、医学和渔业之后,约翰又回到了观察自然和提出问题的生活中。 After a few weeks, John added the sludge.(几个星期后,约翰把污泥加了进去。) He was amazed at the results...and all that was left was pure water.(他对结果感到惊讶。 You put organisms in new relationships...develop their own ways to self-repair.(你把生物体放在新的关系中,观察会发生什么。 故选A。 28~31. In this 'book of books,' artworks are selected and arranged in a way that emphasizes these connections between different eras and cultures. From a 21st-century point of view, the printed book is certainly ancient, but it remains as interactive as any battery-powered e-reader. 故选A。 29. 通过文章第二段中的“artworks are selected and arranged in a way that emphasizes...absorbed in a volume, deep in thought or lost in a moment of leisure.(艺术品的选择和排列方式强调了不同时代和文化之间的联系。 30. 根据划线词上文“artworks are selected and arranged...between the generations.(艺术品的选择和排列方式强调了不同时代和文化之间的联系。 故选A。 31. 通过文章最后一段中的“it remains as interactive as any battery-powered e-reader(它仍然像任何电池供电的电子阅读器一样具有互动性)”以及“a printed book still offers the chance of a wholly private, 'off-line' activity.(印刷书籍仍然提供了完全私人的‘离线’活动的机会)”可推知,本文作者提到电子阅读器想表达的是印刷书籍并没有完全过时。故选A。 32~35. It would probably also rely on prepared phrases a lot more often, which is not available when you are speaking quickly.(它也可能更多地依赖于准备好的短语,而当你的语速很快时,这就行不通了。) Some minor punctuation marks were added to make it clearer.(添加了一些小标点符号以使其更清晰。) Human speech involves a lot more starting and stopping with errors and the need for repairing broken sentences than you may think. Even gifted speakers make mistakes.(人类语言涉及的开始和停止错误以及修复断句的需要可能比你想象的多得多。 故选A。 35. 36. 根据上文“If the only reading you ever do is the novel or magazine, the speed at which you read -probably does not matter very much. But if you have to read a great deal for study, you will appreciate the benefits of being able to read more quickly.(如果你唯一的阅读是小说或杂志,那么你阅读的速度可能并不重要。 Here are some tips to help improve your reading speed.(这里有一些帮助提高阅读速度的建议。) 37. 根据本段主题句“Before you open the book, make sure that you are comfortable.(在你打开书之前,确保你感到舒服。)” Keep the room cool rather than warm to avoid feeling sleepy.(保持房间凉爽而不是温暖以避免困倦。) 根据下文“Look at the table of contents, the preface, the chapter heading, etc(查看目录、前言、章节标题等。)” Spend a few minutes looking through the book.(花几分钟浏览一下这本书。) 39. 根据上文“If you decide that you need to read the whole book, decide how much you can read at a time.(如果你决定要读完整本书,决定一下你一次能读多少。)”和下文“A history book which may contain the facts in story form will be easier to read than one dealing with scientific subjects.(以故事形式包含事实的历史书比科学题材的书更容易阅读。)” This depends on the type of book you are reading.(这取决于你读的书的类型。) 40. 根据段落主题句“Always keep a pencil and paper beside you.(总是在身边放一支铅笔和一张纸。)” Make a note of any page which is of special importance.(把任何有特别重要的一页都记下来。) A.teach教;B.compare比较;C.assess评估;D.speak讲话。根据Mr wang has pretended to be someone else many times可知,能扮成他人,还会讲不同的方言。故选D。 42. A.lawyer律师;B.doctor医生;C.policeman警察;D.businessman商人。根据To look into the   (44)  , Wang disguised(伪装) himself and   (45)   the beggars以及 including a National May Day Labor Medal and 11 Citations of Merit. A.role角色;B.study学习;C.family家庭;D.andience观众。 故选A。 44. A.mirror镜子;B.case情况,案件;C.future未来;D.question问题。根据In the 1990s, a group of thieves often sold stolen goods with the help of some beggars. A.interviewed采访;B.joined加入;C.arrested逮捕;D.assisted协助。根据To look into the   (44)  , Wang disguised(伪装) himself可知,为了调查案件,他混入乞丐中。故选B。 46. A.challenge挑战;B.experience经历;C.appearance出现, 外表;D.freedom自由。根据Dirty shorts and old shoes可知,这是描述外表。故选C。 47. A.vote投票;B.sympathy同情;C.permission许可;D.trust信任。 A.invited邀请;B.forced强迫;C.helped帮助;D.expected期待。 故选A。 49. A.drunk喝醉的; B.deserted抛弃的; C.bored无聊的;D.lost失去的。根据上文 drink alcohol和下文they began to talk a lot可知,话多是在喝醉后。故选A。 50. A.guide引导;B.concentrate集中; C.excuse找借口;D.allow允许。根据下文 and send the   (52)   to my teammates. A.refer to指的是;B.note down作记录,写下;C.ask about询问;D.miss out错过,遗漏。 A.plan计划;B.agreement同意;C.direction指导;D.information信息。 I'd then   (50)   myself to use the toilet,   51)   what the beggars said可知,这些乞丐的话就是重要信息,需要及时发出。故选D。 53. A.awkward笨拙的,尴尬的;B.dangerous危险的; C.unfortunate不幸的;D.strange奇怪的。根据上文Wang disguised(伪装) himself and   (45)   the beggars. A.separate分开;B.recover恢复; C.escape逃避;D.hear听到。 Wang, who is often in   (53)   situations, is also a judo(柔道) master. A.courage勇气;B.honesty诚实;C.kindness善良;D.optimism乐观。 As long as I get close enough, no criminal can   (54)   from me," he said. 故选A。 56.-65 56.. (58)  (educate) people about this problem作目的状语,要用动词不定式,故填to educate。 59. 故填was。 64. 故填from。 1.Why didn't the woman sleep well last night? He put me in competitions and this year I've fought in Milan and London. I'd say I'm about 12 fights away from becoming a winner.      Sometimes I can't believe how far I've come from that day I arrived in England. I think everything that's happened has been because I'm committed. But anyone could do it. If you put in 100%, you'll get there. I'm just happy because I did a positive thing with my life. It feels good. 21.Why did the author decide to go to London? A. He lost his job at the restaurant. B. He found another job in London. C. He longed for a new adventure. D. A dirty stream, for example, often became clear after flowing through plants and along rocks where tiny creatures lived. When he got older, John started to wonder if this process could be used to clean up the messes people were making. After studying agriculture, medicine, and fisheries in college, John went back to observing nature and asking questions. Why can certain plants trap harmful bacteria (细菌)? Which kinds of fish can eat cancer-causing chemicals? With the right combination of animals and plants, he figured, maybe he could clean up waste the way nature did. He decided to build what he would later call an eco-machine. The task John set for himself was to remove harmful substances from some sludge (污泥). First, he constructed a series of clear fiberglass tanks connected to each other. Then he went around to local ponds and streams and brought back some plants and animals. He placed them in the tanks and waited. Little by little, these different kinds of life got used to one another and formed their own ecosystem. After a few weeks, John added the sludge. He was amazed at the results. The plants and animals in the eco-machine took the sludge as food and began to eat it! Within weeks, it had all been digested, and all that was left was pure water. Over the years, John has taken on many big jobs. He developed a greenhouse—like facility that treated sewage (污水) from 1,600 homes in South Burlington. He also designed an eco-machine to clean canal water in Fuzhou, a city in southeast China. "Ecological design" is the name John gives to what he does. "Life on Earth is kind of a box of spare parts for the inventor," he says. "You put organisms in new relationships and observe what's happening. Then you let these new systems develop their own ways to self-repair." 24.What can we learn about John from the first two paragraphs? A. He was fond of traveling. B. He enjoyed being alone. C. He had an inquiring mind. D. He longed to be a doctor. 25.Why did John put the sludge into the tanks? A. To feed the animals. B. To build an ecosystem. C. To protect the plants. D. To erase doubts about John's invention. 27.What is the basis for John's work? A. Nature can repair itself. B. Organisms need water to survive. C. Life on Earth is diverse. D. Most tiny creatures live in groups. C Reading Art: Art for Book Lovers is a celebration of an everyday object—the book, represented here in almost three hundred artworks from museums around the world. The image of the reader appears throughout history, in art made long before books as we now know them came into being. In artists' representations of books and reading, we see moments of shared humanity that go beyond culture and time. In this "book of books," artworks are selected and arranged in a way that emphasizes these connections between different eras and cultures. We see scenes of children learning to read at home or at school, with the book as a focus for relations between the generations. Adults are portrayed (描绘) alone in many settings and poses—absorbed in a volume, deep in thought or lost in a moment of leisure. These scenes may have been painted hundreds of years ago, but they record moments we can all relate to. Books themselves may be used symbolically in paintings to demonstrate the intellect (才智), wealth or faith of the subject. Before the wide use of the printing press, books were treasured objects and could be works of art in their own right. More recently, as books have become inexpensive or even throwaway, artists have used them as the raw material for artworks—transforming covers, pages or even complete volumes into paintings and sculptures. Continued developments in communication technologies were once believed to make the printed page outdated. From a 21st-century point of view, the printed book is certainly ancient, but it remains as interactive as any battery-powered e-reader. To serve its function, a book must be activated by a user: the cover opened, the pages parted, the contents reviewed, perhaps notes written down or words underlined. And in contrast to our increasingly networked lives where the information we consume is monitored and tracked, a printed book still offers the chance of a wholly private, "off-line" activity. 28.Where is the text most probably taken from? A. An introduction to a book. B. An essay on the art of writing. C. A guidebook to a museum. D. A review of modern paintings. 29.What are the selected artworks about? A. Wealth and intellect. B. Home and school. C. Books and reading. D. Work and leisure. 30.What do the underlined words "relate to" in paragraph 2 mean? A. Understand. B. Paint. C. Seize. D. Transform. 31.What does the author want to say by mentioning the e-reader? A. The printed book is not totally out of date. B. Technology has changed the way we read. C. Our lives in the 21st century are networked. D. People now rarely have the patience to read. D                                    The Rise of Voice Technology      Voice technology has come a long way. Just a few years ago, it would have been unusable. But now, those who follow the technology know that it has got considerably better.      Writing with your voice raises several interesting questions. How difficult is it actually? Human speech involves a lot more starting and stopping with errors and the need for repairing broken sentences than you may think. Even gifted speakers make mistakes. To turn the spoken word into reasonable writing requires lots of planning. You'll need some kinds of notes or other organisers to make it work.      Another question turning speech into writing raises is the style. How would writing make the change that people speak their writing rather than type? Chances are that it would come up with many more short sentences and more concrete language, which is good. It would probably also rely on prepared phrases a lot more often, which is not available when you are speaking quickly.      To confirm this, a column was not written, but dictated(听写). It was composed from brief notes written down for structure only, and it was edited for length, with all of the original errors kept in. Here were the results. The first was that the literal accuracy was extremely high. There weren't many cases where the software had heard one word incorrectly and written down another. But the other result was that the readability of this column was rather bad. Obviously, the blame is not with the technology at all, which turns out to be rather good. Speaking into writing relies on a better human brain than the one we currently possess. Writing is hard. There's a reason it can't be done at the speed of speech, in real time.      To clarify the matter, this time paragraph breaks were added after the whole writing. Punctuations (标点) had to be spoken aloud, and after a full stop, the first word in the new sentence was capitalized automatically. Some minor punctuation marks were added to make it clearer. To improve accuracy, people "trained" the software beforehand, reading a prewritten passage aloud. Actually it turns out to be more effective. All of these ensure the satisfactory completion of turning speech into writing.      Language is the most important tool for human interaction, and voice is one beautiful part of language. With the maturity of modern technology, it has given birth to a great change in the human-computer voice interaction. 32.According to the passage, which helps to turn speech into writing in terms of style? A. There is careful planning in advance. B. Errors and broken sentences are avoided. C. People type words as fast as they say them. D. The writing contains more prepared phrases. 33.To achieve better results, the author mentions some changes for ______. A. processing errors in a column B. adding minor punctuation marks C. increasing the number of brief notes D. integrating short paragraphs in writing 34.The author suggests that ______. A. human brains are responsible for poor dictated writing B. writing with voice promises to improve the quality of writing C. writing is an unnatural act that can hardly be learned and improved D. technology has a long way to go in the human-computer voice interaction 35.What is the passage mainly about? A. Why people fully intend to turn speech into writing. B. What role voice technology plays in improving readability. C. Where the human-computer voice interaction is at an advantage. D. How voice technology enables the change from speech into writing. If the only reading you ever do is the novel or magazine, the speed at which you read probably does not matter very much. But if you have to read a great deal for study, you will appreciate the benefits of being able to read more quickly.   (36)        Before you open the book, make sure that you are comfortable. You need a seat which supports your back and the book should be at the right distance from your eyes.   (37)           (38)   Look at the table of contents, the preface, the chapter heading, etc. This will help you to decide whether you really need to read the whole book or only certain parts of it. In the latter you may only be able to read one page.      Always keep a pencil and paper beside you.   (40)   Note also the facts important for your purpose as well as anything which leads you to further research. You don't have to write these things in detail. It is enough to put the page number and one or two words as a reminder. A. Stop to have a rest now and then. B. Spend a few minutes looking through the book. C. This depends on the type of book you are reading. D. Here are some tips to help improve your reading speed. E.
