To Karanth, everyone in every part of the world is born with a fundamental connection to nature. Growing up in Karnataka, she began accompanying her father into the wild at just two years old. But in her hometown, kids grew up with a negative perspective (看法) on wildlife. Elephants destroyed crops and sometimes people were badly injured or killed. Karanth discovered kids wouldn’t appreciate the fact that it’s the best place to witness extraordinary animals.
In 2017, a conversation with her friend Gabby shifted her mindset towards education. Within half a year, Karanth and Gabby had the first version of “Wild Shaale” on their hands. A program designed for students who come into frequent contact with wildlife, Wild Shaale aims to develop a genuine understanding of wildlife and wild spaces and move beyond wildlife tolerance to concepts of conservation (保护) and environmental issues. The conservation education program fills a gap in environmental learning.
While it is fortunate that a basic environmental education is supported by local government, Karanth believes the challenge lies in the quality of the curriculum and whether it’s delivered effectively and consistently. “You have to visualize (想象) what these schools look like. They may not have electricity—forget having computers, internet, iPads, or anything. ”
Encouraging the students to find commonalities between themselves and the animals is the first step to changing perceptions (看法) and hopefully, behaviors. “It comes down to the same things: we need food; we need water; we need space. Then they start to understand why situations of conflict arise,” Karanth says. “But then how do you convince them not to get angry, not to act in a way that leads to harm? That’s something we’re trying to work on. It’s not easy.”
24. What problem might Karanth’s hometown have faced?
A. Human-wildlife conflict. B. Loss of wildlife habitats.
C. Overpopulation of elephants. D. Disregard for wildlife balance.
25. Why did Karanth launch the program Wild Shaale?
A. To help students identify animals. B. To fill a gap in local education.
C. To change how students perceive wildlife. D. To publicize wildlife diversity.
26. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The support for the plan. B. The barrier to the program.
C. The curriculum arrangement. D. The schools’ conditions.
27. What is Karanth trying to achieve in the program?
A. A change in humans’ attitudes and behavior. B. A breakthrough in environmental studies.
C. Appropriate ways to end local conflicts. D. Approaches to changing animals’ behavior.

We all know that exercise is good for our body. It helps us build a strong heart and keep a healthy weight. But did you know that exercise is also great for your brain? Recent studies show that physical activity can actually change the brain in some amazing ways, making us think better and feel happier.
The first change is about the brain’s ability to learn and remember. When we exercise, our heart sends more blood to the brain, carrying oxygen and important food. This helps the brain cells grow and become stronger. Scientists have found that a part of the brain called the hippocampus (海马体), which is very important for memory, gets larger in people who exercise often. This means these people may find it easier to learn new things and get higher scores on tests.
Besides a better memory, exercise is also a powerful way to improve our mood. During and after physical activity, the brain produces more “feel-good” chemicals. These natural brain chemicals help to reduce feelings of worry and stress. You don’t need to run a long way to get the result. Even a short walk or some simple sports can make you feel more relaxed and happy.
So, how can you add more exercise to your life? You don’t have to be an athlete. The key is to find an activity you enjoy. It could be walking or riding a bike to school, joining a dance club, or just playing ball games with friends in the park. Try to be active for at least 30 minutes most days.
In short, exercise is not just about building a healthy body. It is also one of the most effective ways to build a healthier, happier, and smarter brain. Next time when you need a break from study, perhaps going out for some exercise is the best choice.
28. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Exercise is the best way to build a strong body.
B. Exercise has great effects on brain as it does on body.
C. Students should spend more time playing sports.
D. The hippocampus is the most important part of the brain.
29. According to Paragraph 2, how does exercise help us learn better?
A. By making us feel happier and more relaxed.
B. By helping brain cells grow stronger in the hippocampus.
C. By allowing the heart to send less blood to the brain.
D. By making us want to learn new things.
30. How does exercise help to improve our mood?
A. By bringing more blood and oxygen to the brain during physical activity.
B. By helping our brain learn new things and remember information better.
C. By making the hippocampus, an important part for memory, become larger.
D. By producing natural brain chemicals that reduce feelings of worry and stress.
31. What does the author suggest for adding exercise to our life?
A. We must become excellent athletes.
B. We should run a long way every day.
C. We need to find an activity we enjoy.
D. We have to join a school sports team.
D
In a clinical trial with 80 adults, a team of researchers found that sleep extension reduced energy intake and resulted in a negative energy balance in real-life settings among adults with overweight who habitually reduced their sleep duration (持续时间). The findings appear in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.
Obesity is a major public health concern. Much evidence suggests that sleeping less than 7 hours per night on a regular basis is associated with adverse health results. Particularly, insufficient sleep duration has been increasingly recognized as an important factor for obesity. However, it remains unknown whether extending sleep duration can be an effective strategy for preventing obesity.
The clinical trial involved 80 adults aged 21 to 40 years with a body mass index (BMI) between 25.0 and 29.9, and habitual sleep duration of less than 6.5 hours per night. The study was conducted from November 1, 2014 to October 30, 2020. The participants were able to increase their sleep duration by an average of 1.2 hours per night after a personalized sleep counseling (咨询) session.
Overall, participants who increased their sleep duration were able to reduce their calorie intake by an average of 270 kcal per day — which would translate to roughly 12 kg of weight loss over three years if the effects were maintained over a long term.
Ultimately, the researchers hope to examine the underlying (潜在的) mechanisms that may explain these results, and believe their work should encourage new, larger studies on weight control to determine if extending sleep can support weight-loss programs and help prevent or reverse obesity.
“In our earlier work, we understood that sleep is important for appetite regulation,” Dr. Tasali said. “Now we’ve shown that in real life, without making any other lifestyle changes, you can extend your sleep and eat fewer calories. This could really help people trying to lose weight.”
32. What’s the new finding of the research?
A. Sleep extension can lead to weight problems.
B. Extending sleep duration helps reduce caloric intake.
C. Controlling energy intake is the key to losing weight.
D. Overweight adults often decrease their sleep duration.
33. What’s the probable meaning of the underlined word “adverse” in paragraph 2?
A. Harmful. B. Unique. C. Lasting. D. Apparent.
34. According to the text, the subject of the study ________.
A. usually slept 6.5 hours per night
B. were 80 adults of the similar age group
C. got advice on sleep tailored to themselves
D. were particularly chosen from a certain place
35. What do researchers think of the study?
A. Its results are hard to explain clearly.
B. It lays a foundation for further studies.
C. It’s unreliable with many factors ignored.
D. It has solved all the puzzles of researchers.

It’s not so long ago that contactless card payments were exciting and new, but the technology is already old-hat. The new, better way to pay for things in shops? By using your phone to make a contactless payment.
Because traditionally, when you have paid with a card tap (轻敲) or using a chip and pin machine, ultimately the shop you are buying from will be noting down all of your card details. ____36____ And this could be a problem — it means that if the shop is hacked (侵入) or plays fast and loose with its data, you could find your card number exposed to the world.
However, when you tap to pay with your device, it generates a unique ID number for that deal and sends that instead. So you can pay for your goods and the shop can get your money. ____37____ That is to say, phone payments are smarter.
____38____ If a pickpocket steals your card they can immediately use up the money. But if they get your phone, when the phone goes to pay it will typically perform a biometric check-it will ask for a finger-print or use the camera to look at your face, to check that you are who you say you are.
____39____ Because of this added security, the limit (限额) is typically higher than for contactless cards. In the UK, it’s around £ 100 for most retailers-though some shops including most supermarkets let you spend much more with just a tap of the phone.
Want to give it a try? To actually set things up, go to your Wallet app and follow the instructions. ____40____ Then it will automatically recognise the numbers and connect with your bank. Usually you receive a text message with a special code on it. And then, well, you’re done. When you pay, hold your phone over the payment machine, and pay for your goods!
A. It helps to build the client list.
B. The setup process varies with banks.
C. No one needs to share any sensitive data.
D. It’s also more effective against the threat of thefts.
E. And phone payments are increasingly convenient too.
F. Typically this starts by scanning your card with your phone.
G. Therefore, it knows which bank account to take the money from.

I've got some updates about this year's school photography competition. You might remember that last year's theme was travel, but this time your photos should be connected to the environment. We want you to really think about how nature plays a role in our everyday lives, just like before, there are a few requirements. All photos must include wildlife, so please don't just take pictures of landscapes or people. Make sure there's some kind of animal in the shot IT could be birds or insects, anything that shows the beauty of wildlife. Also, we have a new judge this year. The head teacher wanted to invite local artist Sally graves, but SHE won't be available at that time. Luckily, writer James mick has agreed to help instead. I'm sure many of you know him. He's quite well known and actually grew up near here. He's excited to see your work. As for the prize, we've made a change. We know most of you already have photography equipment or books, so instead the winner will get a place on a photography course at central college that should be a great learning opportunity and a fun experience, too. Thank you for your attention, and we look forward to seeing your photos. Listen up, everyone. I've got some updates about this year's school photography competition.
【答案】24 A 25. C 26. B 27. A

C Students should spend more time playing sports.
【答案】28. B 29. B 30. D 31. C

Dear friends,
As we all know, good eating habits are vital to our physical health and daily study. Yet some students have bad ones: they often skip breakfast, prefer unhealthy snacks to nutritious meals, and are too particular about food, which seriously harms their physical growth.
Therefore, we must develop good eating habits. First, we should have a variety of healthy foods, such as fresh vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Second, take meals regularly every day and eat a proper amount each time to avoid overeating.
In my view, forming such good habits is not a difficult task. Let’s take action now to stick to proper diets and keep ourselves in good shape.
That’s all. Thank you!
