He published his first song when he was eighteen years old. During the next twenty years he wrote more than five hundred songs. Many of Gershwin's songs were first written for musical plays performed in theatres in New York City. These plays were a popular form of entertainment in the 1920s and 1930s. Many of his songs have remained popular as ever. Over the years they have been sung and played in every possible way — from jazz to country. In the 1920s there was a debate in the United States about jazz music. Could jazz some people asked, be considered serious music? In 1924 jazz musician and orchestra leader Paul Whiteman decided to organize a special concert to show that jazz was serious music. Gershwin agreed to compose something for the concert before he realized he had just a few weeks to do it. And in that short time, he composed a piece for piano and orchestra which he called Rhapsody in Blue. Gershwin himself played the piano at the concert. The audience were thrilled when they heard his music. It made him world-famous and showed that jazz music could be both serious and popular. In 1928, Gershwin went to Paris. He applied to study composition with the well-known musician Nadia Boulanger, but she rejected him. She was afraid that classical study would ruin his jazz-influenced style. While there, Gershwin wrote An American in Paris. When it was first performed, critics(评论家) were divided over the music. Some called it happy and full of life, to others it was silly and boring. But it quickly became popular in Europe and the United States. It still remains one of his most famous works. George Gershwin died in 1937, just days after doctors learned he had brain cancer. He was only thirty-nine years old. Newspapers all over the world reported his death on their front pages. 4. Many of Gershwin's musical works were ______. A. written about New Yorkers B. composed for Paul Whiteman C. played mainly in the countryside D. performed in various ways 5. What do we know about the concert organized by Whiteman? A. It attracted more people to theatres B. It proved jazz could be serious music C. It made Gershwin leader of the orchestra D. It caused a debate among jazz musicians 6. What did Gershwin do during his stay in Paris? A. He created one of his best works B. He studied with Nadia Boulanger C. He argued with French critics D. He changed his music style 7. Which of the following best describes Gershwin? A. Talented and productive. B. Serious and boring. C. Popular and unhappy. D. Friendly and honest. C As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect. He was lying on his hard, as it were armor-plated, back and when he lifted his head a little he could see his dome-like brown belly divided into stiff arched segments on top of which the bed quilt could hardly keep in position and was about to slide off completely. His numerous legs, which were pitifully thin compared to the rest of his body, waved helplessly before his eyes. “What has happened to me?” he thought. It was no dream. His room, a regular human bedroom, only rather too small, lay quiet between the four familiar white walls. Above the table on which a collection of cloth samples was unpacked and spread out—Samsa was a commercial traveler—hung the picture which he had recently cut out of an illustrated magazine and put into a pretty golden frame. It showed a lady. Gregor’s eyes turned next to the window, and the overcast sky—one could hear rain drops beating on the window—made him quite melancholy (忧郁的). What about sleeping a little longer and forgetting all this nonsense, he thought, but it could not be done, for he was accustomed to sleep on his right side and in his present condition he could not turn himself over. However violently he forced himself towards his right side he always rolled on to his back again. He tried it at least a hundred times, shutting his eyes to keep from seeing his struggling legs, and only stopped when he began to feel in him a faint ache he had never experienced before. He thought: “What an exhausting job I’ve picked on! ” Traveling about day in, day out. It’s much more boring work than doing the actual business in the office, and on top of that there’s the trouble of constant traveling, of worrying about train connections, the bed and irregular meals, casual acquaintances that are always new and never become intimate friends. The devil takes it all! He felt a slight itching up on his belly; slowly pushed himself on his back nearer to the top of the bed so that he could lift his head more easily; identified the itching place which was surrounded by many small white spots the nature of which he could not understand and made to touch it with a leg, but drew the leg back immediately, for the contact made a cold shiver run through him.(to be continued) 8. What might Gregor Samsa look like when he woke up? A. A normal commercial traveler. B. Something ridiculous. C. A huge insect with thick legs. D. A lady in the gift frame. 9. What can we know about Samsa’s room? A. It was a regular room and tidy. B. There was so window for him to look outside his tiny room. C. Its walls were dull and pale. D. There was a magazine and a pretty golden frame on the table. 10. How might Samsa feel when he found his transformation? A. Extremely frightened B. Indifferent. C. Relieved. D. Unreal. 11. What can we conclude from the last paragraph? A. Samsa felt unsatisfied about his life before. B. Samsa would rather do actual business. C. Samsa couldn’t identify where was itching however he tried. D. The white spots felt cold when Samsa touched them. D The fact that gender diversity is something that companies constantly desire highlights the problem in itself. Across industries, the workforce gender balance is still highly skewed (偏向……的), even in fields which do not traditionally involve laborious work. The tech industry is a case in point, with the workforce imbalance definitely being one of the most prominent on the list. Diversity and inclusion need to go hand in hand, and women around the world are increasingly assuming important positions and taking core decisions in the tech sector. These women are driving technological change and innovation which impact the industry at large. Gender diversity, like diversity in general, is important for varied perspectives and thought processes in a company. These perspectives are what help shape advancements and new ideas in technology and overall operations for the success of the business. This is especially true for technologies such as AI. According to a 2017 report on Higher Education by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, women were at or near parity (对等) among undergraduate degrees in science IT and computer. Most women equal men when it comes to skills, but face discrimination in other areas, thus creating a gap and reducing the will to continue at the company. According to reports, biased treatment within the workplace is the most frequently cited reason for leaving, followed by poor management. There is still scope for a shift in attitudes at workplaces, which is a major obstacle when it comes to preserving women employees. In order to retain this talent and hire more talent like this, governments, NGOs and leaders from tech organizations need to come together to help close the gender gap further by providing more flexible work options and decision-making opportunities for women. More and more women across the world are interested in looking for tech careers or maintaining their existing ones. There is a need to encourage them to take up roles in AI and STEM (Science Technology, Engineering, and Maths) with opportunities that are both fair and equal. Given the computer-driven nature of AI, there is a need for women from diverse backgrounds to balance out the conventionally male-dominated profession to give an accurate representation. 12. From the first paragraph we know that ________. A. gender balance problem remains to be solved B. laborious work demands more gender balance C. not all industries have gender balance problem D. gender balance problem has been more serious 13. Women employees are reported to leave their jobs mainly because of ________. A. unsatisfying income B. poor management C. competitive workplace D. unfair treatment 14. Which of the following can help to retain and attract more women? A. Encouraging women to take up all kinds of roles. B. Treating women employees more kindly than to men employees. C. Offering women diverse work choices and decision-making opportunities. D. Providing a tolerant working environment combined with favorable welfare. 15. What is the purpose of writing this passage? A. To appeal to women to protect their proper rights B. To present the fact of gender bias in the tech industry C. To call for more women representation in the tech industry D. To teach the tech industry how to get rid of gender bias 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Living in a city, you often see a group of runners emerge around a corner. Just then. his mother entered and told him that George had come. When Thomas saw his mother and George, he told them what he had thought about.
