In the late afternoon, a drone (无人机) lifted gently into the sky. On its screen, elephants moved into sight, while a train could be seen far away traveling along the China-Laos Railway. It was another work day to watch the large species (物种) for Peng Jinfu, a wild elephant monitor (监督员) in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture.
Wild Asian elephants are a flagship species in China’s rainforests. They receive top-level national monitoring and protection and are recognized as “endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Thanks to strengthened protection efforts, their population in Yunnan — their primary living areas in China — has grown from 140 in 1976 to over 300 today.
Elephant monitors play a key role in improving the relationship between humans and wildlife. “They track elephant movements, not only warning villagers of likely danger areas but also providing valuable information for scientific research,” explained Zhou Chenhao, director of the Xishuangbanna Asian Elephant Protection and Management Center.
Peng spends his days tracking elephant activities, mapping safe travel areas for people, and creating warning videos shared on the Internet. “I used to track them on foot, but thick forests often prevented me from seeing elephants,” he recalled. “Now, drones allow me to watch many groups at the same time.”
Xishuangbanna has put many smart monitoring tools into use. Thanks to them, since 2022, over 35,000 warnings have been sent across the area, preventing more than 700 possible human-elephant conflicts. These technologies help scientific research too. X-ray cameras help us to study elephants’ movement areas and behavior, while drones provide information on moving paths. Protection efforts have developed from saving single animals to protecting the whole ecosystems, with cross-country protected areas between China and Laos enlarging habitat spaces.
As researcher Chen Fei noted, “We’ve turned from saving elephants to protecting more species in the future.” This mixture of technology and environmental wisdom is creating a new stage of co-living between humans and wildlife.
8. What does the underlined part “a flagship species” in Paragraph 2 probably refer to?
A. A species of the largest size.
B. A species only found in China.
C. A species most monitored and protected.
D. A species used for scientific experiments.
9. What is a role of elephant monitors?
A. Designing smart monitoring tools.
B. Telling people the possible danger.
C. Training elephants for performances.
D. Carrying out scientific research alone.
10. What can be inferred about the future of wildlife protection?
A. Drones will be the only tool used.
B. Human-elephant conflicts will increase.
C. Protection efforts will focus on more species.
D. Traditional methods will remain the most effective.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. How humans relate to animals.
B. The daily work of elephant monitors.
C. The history of elephant protection in China.
D. How technologies help protect Asian elephants.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. C 11. D

Survivor bias (偏差) happens when we look at successful outcomes and lose sight of failures. This can create a misleading view of reality.
Survivor bias is a hidden issue that often goes unnoticed in analyses. Naturally, we prefer to focus on success stories, whether they are leaders or people who overcame medical issues. These success stories are more frequently shared and heard than those about failures.
Consider famous college dropouts like Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, and Bill Gates. Their success might make you think that a college degree is not important. However, that’s survivor bias at play! These successful people get a lot of media attention because they are outstanding. You often forget about the many college dropouts who do not become rich and famous. It is important to consider their experiences too.
Survivor bias is also present in medical research. Younger and healthier people are more likely to survive the initial diagnosis (初次诊断) of a disease. Therefore, they are more likely to join medical studies. In comparison, older and weaker patients are less likely to survive long enough to take part in these studies. Consequently, these studies can overrate how well treatments work because they are less likely to include those who die shortly after diagnosis.
Successful cases are usually easier to notice and contact than unsuccessful ones. However, focusing on the successful examples and ignoring other cases brings in survivor bias. This means that you’re leaving out a serious part of the complete picture, as it’s harder to get data from less successful people. This incomplete data can lead us to make poor decisions. Put simply, survivor bias produces an inexact sample (样本), causing you to jump to wrong conclusions.
To reduce the effect of survivor bias, you should look for ways to gather a typical sample from the entire population, not just a few success stories. While this may call for more time and effort, but you’ll get better results.
12. The author explain survivor bias in education by _____.
A. Giving examples. B. Examining data.
C. Describing facts. D. Comparing opinions.
13. Why might medical studies give an overly positive view of treatments?
A. They include patients of all ages. B. They often focus on successful cases.
C. They only assess one special illness. D. They record older patients frequently.
14. What may happen if you have a survivor bias?
A. You will be more likely to survive in difficult situations.
B. You will assess the possibility of failure and quit your project.
C. You will take all factors into consideration before making a final decision.
D. You will reach a mistaken conclusion and make a wrong decision.
15. What does the author suggest readers do to avoid survivor bias?
A. Leave out the famous historic cases. B. Collect a wide enough range of samples.
C. Focus on those well-known examples. D. Choose some successful and inspiring stories.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. B

China’s 18-year-old Deng Yawen stunned the world with a surprise victory in the women’s cycling BMX freestyle park final at the Paris Olympics on July 31,2024, scoring an impressive 92.60 points in her best run. The victory secured China’s eighth gold medal of the Games. Deng’s two runs both scored over 90 points, securing her the gold medal. Her teammate,20-year-old Sun Jiaqi, finished in the seventh place.
Being her first Olympics, Deng admitted to feeling nervous and hesitant, especially after witnessing her teammate’s mistakes. However, she found the strength to believe in herself to carry out her routines flawlessly. “When you have a firm goal, any difficulty becomes a small issue,” Deng told reporters after her win. “Everything revolves around achieving that goal.”
Deng’s journey to this golden moment began in 2017. She received invitations from two different sports teams: one from a provincial javelin team and the other from a BMX coach who was seeking potential talent for the Tokyo Olympics when the sport was set to make its debut (首次亮相) at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Ultimately, she decided to pursue BMX, opening a new and exciting chapter in her life. BMX has become Deng’s primary focus and nearly sole hobby. “Most of my life is taken up by BMX. My friends, coaches, playmates, and even social media are all about BMX. If I have to mention a hobby, it’s just BMX,” she said.
Deng topped the podium (领奖台) at the 2023 UCI BMX Freestyle Park World Cup with a score of93.84 points, and her outstanding performances in the Olympic qualification series secured her a place at the Paris Olympics. Her victory at the Paris Olympics marks a historic milestone for China in BMX freestyle. The Chinese national freestyle BMX team was established in 2018, and despite failing to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, the team has shown rapid progress since then. Deng’s gold medal win, alongside her teammate Sun’s seventh-place finish, highlights the remarkable advancement of Chinese athletes.
