Juan came from a very poor, single parent home. Throughout the year, I noticed that Juan had an unusual ability to solve equations, and to correlate abstract relationships between concepts. I was shocked when he approached me after school one day to tell me that he liked chemistry, but failed to think that he was intelligent enough to attend college. He asked me what he should do with his life.
I praised Juan’s talent and encouraged him not to waste it. His eyes lit up as I explained how scholarships, loans, and grants could make college possible, then invited him to join my advanced placement chemistry class next year. After promising to reconsider his future, Juan surprised me the next morning during my jog by appearing on my lawn, declaring cheerfully, “I’ve decided to take your AP class.”
Juan was my best student that year in advanced placement chemistry. His skills and abilities continued to grow, and he never tired of mind-bending calculations or homework. He literally blossomed before my eyes. As the end of the year approached, Juan thanked me for my interest in his life. I was profoundly moved when he told me that those fifteen or twenty minutes that we had talked the previous year had changed his life. He got an A on the advanced placement chemistry exam and he was awarded enough scholarship assistance that he was able to attend the local university.
My experiences with Juan contributed to my decision to remain in the classroom. My love for my students and for the subject I teach has continued to grow over the years. I consider myself most fortunate to be a chemistry teacher, and to have been a part of so many young lives, hopes, and dreams!
4. What was Juan’s initial attitude towards his own academic abilities?
A. Confident about college. B. Excelled in chemistry.
C. Avoided challenges. D. Doubted university chances.
5. Which of the following best explain “literally blossomed before my eyes” underlined in paragraph 3?
A. Became physically taller. B. Improved social skills.
C. Showed amazing growth. D. Planted lab experiments.
6. Which of the following best describes the teacher?
A. Knowledgeable and patient. B. Sympathetic and helpful.
C. Passionate and intelligent. D. Approachable and persistent.
7. What was the long-term impact of Juan’s story on the teacher?
A. Won teaching awards. B. Changed subjects taught.
C. Focused on poor students. D. Stayed in teaching.
Growing cucumbers on the moon might sound like science fiction, but for thousands of Australian students aged seven to ten, that future is now. They are pioneering the ALEPH Project, a groundbreaking world-first mission to establish the first lunar garden by 2026.
Far from being passive observers, these young scientists are the vital engine of the project. They roll up their sleeves to tackle the core objective — figuring out what can actually grow on the moon — through hands-on experimentation. By designing specialized seed delivery systems and uploading findings to a national database, they equip scientists with real-world data for critical decision-making. This Stile Education and Lunaria One partnership has already yielded remarkable results, with over 440 student-led experiments and 200 teams’ data pushing the mission ahead.
Yet the universe isn’t making it easy for these young explorers. The biggest problem is reproducing the tough environment of the moon right in their classroom. While they can use an oven to generate moon-like heat and a special machine to simulate rocket shake, copying the space radiation and zero-gravity that seeds face in space is much harder. This mismatch between Earth-based simulations and what really happens in space makes their project immensely challenging.
To bridge this gap, the students learn through trial and error, like real scientists do. Take the case of 13-year-old Huefner. He discovered moon-like conditions made tomatoes grow taller than the control group, proving science isn’t just formulas, but human curiosity in action. Such stories resonate with the team on a profound level. Lunaria One’s Lauren recalls wanting fresh salad during her space mission, not dry food. “It really hit home how important missions like this are,” she reflects, “as they’re our first steps toward growing fresh food in space.” This direct link from scientific inquiry to future sustenance (生计) sustains their passion.
This project does more than grow plants — it grows future explorers. Ultimately, it brings science to life, because the kids tending these lunar gardens today might just be the ones seeding humanity’s future in space tomorrow — all through their school curriculum.
8. What is the primary purpose of the ALEPH Project?
A. To modernize experimental learning. B. To advance off-world farming practice.
C. To evaluate lunar agricultural systems. D. To stimulate passive scientific minds.
9. What is the main challenge for these young scientists?
A. Tackling true-to-moon heat modeling. B. Seeking access to high-end lab equipment.
C. Gaining experience in Earth agriculture. D. Recreating conditions similar to space.
10. What does the underlined phrase “hit home” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Caused serious technical arguments. B. Evaluated novel scientific insights.
C Struck with deep emotional force. D. Reached the unexpected destination.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Can Classrooms Feed Moon? B. How to Survive Lunar Heat?
C. Who Will Farm in Space? D. Is Off-Earth Salad Beneficial?
The tiny worm Caenorhabditis elegans has a brain just about the width of a human hair yet it can coordinate and calculate complex movements as it hunts for food. Daniela Rus, a computer scientist at MIT, was so deeply impressed by the elegance and efficiency of this worm’s brain that she co-founded a company, Liquid AI, to build a new type of artificial intelligence.
Many researchers including Rus think making traditional AI more brainlike could create flexible and perhaps smarter technology. “To improve AI truly, we need to absorb insights from neuroscience (神经科学),” says Kanaka Rajan, a computational neuroscientist at Harvard University.
Mike Davies, who directs the Neuromorphic Computing Lab, notes such technology won’t fully replace ordinary computers or traditional AI models — instead, many systems will coexist in the future. Imitating brains is not a new idea. In the 1950s, Frank Rosenblatt created the perceptron, a highly simplified model of brain nerve cell communication with a single layer of connected artificial neurons. This basic design later helped inspire deep learning. Yet consuming vast amounts of data and energy, most today’s AI models are unable to adapt easily to new situations or learn from single experiences like a brain, and are criticized as “brute force and inefficient.” Currently, AI development has two paths — “scale-up” vs. “efficiency-focused” — with an uncertain future while brain-inspired neuromorphic computing progress hasn’t joined mainstream AI.
Inspired by the worm, Rus worked with Ramin Hasani’s team to create liquid neural networks. Unlike traditional deep learning with fixed post-training settings, these networks are more flexible and can learn like living things. By copying worm neurons with mathematical formulas and solving computing problems, they can work in real time. Tests showed with just 34 artificial neurons a small liquid network worked better than a traditional AI with 250,000 settings in drone tasks. Liquid AI has worked with DARPA to test aircraft models and launched the 7-billion-setting LFM-7B, which performs better than similar traditional language models.
Though needing much computing power and not necessarily more energy-saving, liquid neural networks are an important step toward realistic, brain-like AI. As Rus says, “I’m excited about Liquid AI because I believe it could change the future of AI and computing.”
12. What mainly inspired Daniela Rus to establish Liquid AI?
A. The limitations of traditional AI models.
B. The efficiency of the tiny worm’s brain.
C. The worm’s cooperative food-hunting skills.
D. The pursuit of more flexible and smarter technology.
13. What does Mike Davies suggest about future AI development?
A. Brain-like technology has little practical value.
B. Neuromorphic computing will dominate the AI field.
C Different AI systems may work together in the future.
D. Traditional AI models will be completely abandoned.
14. What makes liquid neural networks special?
A. They have fixed settings after training.
B. They depend on few mathematical formulas.
C. They work worse than traditional AI in tasks.
D. They can learn flexibly like living creatures.
15. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Liquid AI has both limits and value.
B. Brain-like AI has been fully achieved.
C. Traditional AI is more reliable than liquid AI.
D. Liquid AI will definitely control the AI market.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Draw what you see, not what you think you see, is probably what you’ve heard a lot if you’re a beginner artist. ____16____ Below are some techniques.
Invert (颠倒) your subject. The idea is that turning the photo upside down lets you observe more closely. We’re so used to seeing the world the right way up that we have preconstructed ideas of what most things look like. Since our brains automatically reuse familiar drawing habits, we often fail to understand the real shapes we’re trying to observe. ____17____
Draw negative space. Another great way to focus on seeing things as they really are and not as we imagine them is to try to draw the negative space. ____18____ The line is the same because the virtual border of an object is the same as the border of its environment.
Draw a plant. Let’s go to the opposite extreme. I mentioned that a challenge with drawing what you see is disturbance from our existing concepts. ____19____ Our basic idea of what a plant looks like is often something at the symbol level. The reality is that plants are much more complex, and certainly aren’t flat. This contrast makes them a good subject to help us break free from our reliance on symbolic expression.
____20____ Writing and drawing are often seen as two distinct ways to represent a scene. However, visual artists can also benefit from writing. That’s because it can encourage slow observation and help us notice the full complexity of a subject. Find an object and describe it in words first. Then draw it slowly from different angles.
A. Describe the scene in words.
B. Use drawing to add power to your words.
C. However, these concepts are not accepted universally.
D. However, it can be harder than it might sound when you do.
E. When an image is upside down, we have to concentrate a lot more.
F. That is the space between the objects, rather than the objects themselves.
G. This is particularly apparent when you consider complex subjects like plants.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was one of those freezing nights we got here in Minnesota in the middle of winter. The dampness in the air got trapped and a curtain of fog sank all around, mixing with the snow on the ground and the strong snow falling from the sky to white out everything. Normally I wouldn’t drive in that kind of weather, but I’d been at a Tupperware party all evening, and I was so exhausted. The desire to be in the comfort of my own home beat my better judgment. However never had I imagined my little act could save my life on such a night.
I was only on the road for a minute before I regretted my decision not to stay put. The winding country road was totally deserted. My car’s headlights could barely cut through the heavy fog. The snow was getting heavier. A lot heavier. Everything beyond a few feet in front of me was a mystery. I drove slowly. I wasn’t quite sure where I was, though I knew there were railways specifically built for freight (货运) trains in this area. But in such weather, it was impossible to spot the tracks or any signs of an approaching train.
Trembling with cold, I turned up the heat. The loud blowers did their work, sheltering me from the bitter cold and the sound outside. Seemingly, everything went smoothly as I inched forward.
All at once, my headlights shone on a small animal in front of me, right at the farthest point they could reach. I hit the brakes-tires screeched (发嘎吱声) against the snow as the car was coming to a stop. When the world stopped spinning, taking a closer look, I found it was a brown rabbit, its fur covered with ice crystals in the headlights. I tapped the horn, no response. I tried again, yet the little creature remained rooted-it appeared unwilling to get out of the way. Curiously, I got out of the car and made my way toward it.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Getting near, I found its leg stuck in a trap.

C. Struck with deep emotional force. D. Reached the unexpected destination.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Can Classrooms Feed Moon? B. How to Survive Lunar Heat?
C. Who Will Farm in Space? D. Is Off-Earth Salad Beneficial?
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. A

The tiny worm Caenorhabditis elegans has a brain just about the width of a human hair, yet it can coordinate and calculate complex movements as it hunts for food.
C. Different AI systems may work together in the future.
B Brain-like AI has been fully achieved.

【答案】16. D 17. E 18. F 19. G 20. A

上文“Draw a plant. Let’s go to the opposite extreme. I mentioned that a challenge with drawing what you see is disturbance from our existing concepts. (画植物。我们来尝试一个相反的极端例子。我之前提到过,描绘所见的一大挑战是受到固有认知的干扰。)”提出画植物的技巧,并呼应前文“固有认知干扰观察”的核心问题,下文“Our basic idea of what a plant looks like is often something at the symbol level. The reality is that plants are much more complex, and certainly aren’t flat. This contrast makes them a good subject to help us break free from our reliance on symbolic expression.
下文“Writing and drawing are often seen as two distinct ways to represent a scene. However, visual artists can also benefit from writing. That’s because it can encourage slow observation and help us notice the full complexity of a subject. Find an object and describe it in words first. Then draw it slowly from different angles. (写作和绘画通常被视为两种不同的场景表现方式。然而,视觉艺术家也能从写作中获益。这是因为写作能促使人们进行细致观察,帮助我们注意到描绘对象的全部复杂性。找一个物体,先用文字描述它,然后从不同角度慢慢绘制。)”详细介绍了“先写后画”的技巧,强调文字描述对细致观察的帮助。A项“用文字描述场景。”作为该段主旨句,精准概括下文核心内容,“describe the scene in words”与下文“describe it in words first”直接呼应,符合段落主旨。故选A。

Just as I was freeing the rabbit from the trap, a train whooshed(呼啸)by.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Getting near, I found its leg stuck in a trap. Its eyes locked onto mine—wide and desperate, and its nose twitched in panic, as if begging for help. Despite the freezing wind biting through my coat, I knelt down. “Hold on,” I whispered, trying to loosen the trap with numb fingers. The little creature stopped struggling, staring at me with a mix of fear and hope. My gloves were already wet, but I ignored. I determined to save this little life, forgetting about everything around.
Just as I was freeing the rabbit from the trap, a train whooshed (呼啸) by. The fog swirled, and the train’s dark shape with faint light was briefly visible before disappearing into the heavy fog, leaving only the steam behind. In that split second, I realized: had I not stopped for the rabbit, my car would have been on those hidden tracks. My heart pounded violently. After pulling myself together, I finally loosened the trap and the rabbit hopped away. This encounter became a constant reminder that in a world with uncertainties, kindness has its own reward.
