When I was 14, my parents made me volunteer at Greenfield Animal Shelter as punishment for skipping maths class. “You need to learn responsibility,” Mum said, handing me a brightly coloured uniform that was too big. The shelter smelled like wet fur and disinfectant (消毒剂); and my job was cleaning cages - washing food from bowls and sticky floors.
On my third Saturday, I noticed a golden retriever (寻回犬) named Max. His cage card said his owner had passed away, and he’d been at the shelter for three months. Unlike other dogs, Max covered in the corner, shaking at every noise. When I entered his doghouse, he flattened himself into a shaking pancake.
“He’s sweet but scared of everything,” Ms. Torres, a shelter worker, told me. She showed me old injuries on his legs from when he’d tried to bite through the bars.
I decided to spend my breaks with Max. At first, I just sat near his food bowl, reading aloud from a book. His breathing slowed to whispers. Soon, he let me touch his ears. When I dropped my keys, he stepped back but stayed. I brought him a tennis ball, and we played fetch outside. His tail wagged a little more each time. One rainy day, he licked (舔) my hand, and I felt like I was going to cry.
Then, one morning, a family stopped at Max’s doghouse. The youngest girl called him a “golden cloud”. Max didn’t hide. He walked forward, tail wagging, and licked her fingers.
As they filled out the adoption papers, I hid in the storage closet, hugging my knees. I heard their laughter, the jingle of Max’s new collar, and the sound of the door shutting. When I came out, Ms. Torres smiled. “You did good, kid,” she said.
Max taught me that courage isn’t about being fearless — it’s about taking small steps towards something bigger. Now, whenever I’m scared to try something new. I remember his wagging tail and the day he trusted the world again.

C. He tried to escape by biting through the bars. D. He remained in the corner, avoiding any interaction.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Once Fearful Dog B. A Day at the Animal Shelter
C. Small Steps to Courage D. The Importance of Responsibility
C
A primary school in north Devon with a brand-new mud play area hit the headlines last week.
“We felt that our children needed something better at playtime,” said the head teacher, Amy Frost, “The playground before was pristine (整洁的) but there was nothing for them to do. As schools, we have been fearful of allowing our children to take risks. Children don’t learn what risk is and how to manage risk.” To change this, the school designed different zones for climbing and muddy play.
Frost said there had been a few comments from people who found it “difficult to adjust”. but parents were greatly supportive. “My son is caked in mud but he’s having fun!” one parent commented. Another said, “We’d rather do extra laundry and see them thrive (茁壮成长).”
Children today have less access to unstructured outdoor play than past generations did. Helen Dodd, a professor of child psychology at the University of Exeter, said, “The decline in children getting muddy is part of our risk aversion (风险规避). We want to keep children safe, so we stop children from doing the things that children naturally do. If we want to give children space to connect with nature, they need to do that in an unrestricted way, and a consequence is that they might get muddy.”
There’s also research about the benefits of being in contact with mud, just in terms of the biology of what’s in the mud, and how it affects our immune (免疫的) system, also, in terms of sensory things. Lots of children now have sensory difficulties. They don’t like the feel of different things, which might come from being kept overly clean.
Children had never before seen so much and experienced so little said Follett. “All of their experiences are secondary, through screens shut in bedrooms. What they’re lacking is real primary experience, touching, feeling, practising. You know that feeling of squeezing a handful of mud, and it leaking out through your fingers?”
8. What is the purpose of building a mud play area in the primary school?
A. To upgrade school facilities. B. To teach children to learn about risks.
C. To satisfy the parents’ needs. D. To hit the headlines of the newspaper.
9. What prevents children’s outdoor play?
A. Generation gap. B. Behaviour code.
C. School regulation. D. Too much concern.
10. What do we know about mud play?
A It has become more popular. B. It can cause severe consequences.
C. It may strengthen immune system. D. It leads to sensory difficulties.
11. What’s the text mainly about?
A. Why children experience so less. B. How parents become so positive.
C. Why kids should be allowed to play in mud. D. How connection with nature could be built.
D
It is a strange coincidence that as humans attempt to greatly reduce their carbon emissions (排放) they are also rushing to develop a technology that could, in theory, consume an unlimited amount of energy.
Doing things against facts is a dangerous game, but you can picture a world in which, having chosen to start dealing with climate change properly in the 1990s, we would be just wrapping up the gentle path to net-zero emissions in time for a rapid AI increase fuelled by green power. Instead, we find ourselves at risk of running a 21st-century technology on a 20th-century energy supply.
If you live in the US, every time you use an AI model, around 20 per cent of the electricity required will be produced by burning coal. The explosive growth of AI makes this an even more pressing concern. According to one analysis, if Google chose to shift to an entirely Al-powered search business, its electricity consumption could match that of some countries.
Such estimates may be magnified, but evidence of rising power consumption from AI is all around. Microsoft is placing bets on nuclear plants to power its data centres, while the English government has promised to boost its national computing capacity by 50 per cent by 2025, which would help it keep pace with rapid AI developments in the world.
Thankfully, we may soon reach a turning point. As is reported, this year the global power department came close to reaching peak greenhouse gas emissions, as the switch from fossil (化石) fuels to clean and renewable sources is well underway. The question now is whether we can quicken the pace of decarbonisation (脱碳) to match the coming growth in energy consumption as AI becomes increasingly embedded (把……嵌入) in our society. Silicon Valley’s intelligent machines may grab the headlines and the imagination, but the people really inventing the future are working on the energy sector.
12. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. The reality is far from what we expected. B. Carbon emissions have been reduced a lot.
C. The rapid AI increase brings many benefits. D. Climate change has to be dealt with properly.
13. Why is electricity consumption a major concern?
A. 20%of the power is produced by burning coal in the US.
B. There is no limit on tech-giants’ electricity consumption.
C. Many countries haven’t switched to clean energy.
D. Extensive use of AI will consume more energy.
14. What does the underlined word “magnified” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Overstated. B. Undervalued. C. Reasonable. D. Common.
15. What would be our primary task before we reach a turning point?
A. Achieving net-zero emissions as soon as possible.
B. Balancing energy-hungry AI with decarbonisation.
C. Shifting to a fully AI-powered search business.
D. Creating an unlimited energy-consuming technology.

Cultural variations in the workplace may range from simple regional differences, such as varying dialects (方言), to different viewpoints on timeliness, efficiency, and communication. ____16____
Be aware of your words and actions. What seems proper to you may not be a cultural standard to another person. ____17____ Is what you’re about to say possibly rude? If so, figure out a way to express it differently Before you give someone at work a high five or a pat on the back, take a moment to consider your actions. Based on what you know about that culture, is touching in the workplace proper?
Practise patience. It may take a while for you to get used to working with people from different cultures. Don’t worry, that’s normal. Try not to get angry if communication takes a little extra effort at first. For example, maybe you are now working with someone whose first language is not your mother tongue. In this case, they might not understand your point. ____18____ Try saying, “OK, I can see I’m not making myself clear. How can I help us get on the same page?”
Look at issues from a different angle (角度). Don’t assume that you are all looking at the issue from the same angle. It’s possible that you might think you’re working with the same goals in mind, but others may have different ideas about how to achieve them. ____19____ Looking at an issue from another point of view can help you find solutions that you might not have considered.

When 16-year-old Li Wei received an invitation to his British classmate Emma’s birthday party, he was so excited that he almost jumped up. Having moved from Shanghai just three months ago, he felt the party was his first real chance to make friends. His mother had spent the entire morning in their tiny apartment kitchen carefully preparing a gift: homemade mooncakes wrapped in red paper decorated with dragon patterns. “In China, red brings good luck and the dragon represents strength,” she said proudly. “These mooncakes carry our family’s blessings.”
At the party, colorful balloons danced along the ceiling (天花板), and the living room was filled with the latest pop songs. Li Wei noticed everyone’s gifts piled (堆放) on a table, and he placed his gift on the top, whose traditional appearance stood out among the gifts. He looked around and found that most of the faces were unfamiliar. So he sat down and listened to the music, waiting excitedly for that big moment — opening the gifts. Soon it came. In the cheers of her friends, Emma walked over to the table. Her eyes were immediately drawn to Li Wei’s uniquely wrapped gift. However, when she opened it, silence fell as she stared at the unfamiliar pastries (糕点). “What…are these?” she asked hesitantly. A boy leaned over and laughed loudly, “Looks like play-dough (橡皮泥)!” Heat rushed to Li Wei’s face as he stammered (结结巴巴地说), “They’re traditional Chinese mooncakes ...” However, his voice was swallowed (淹没) by the laughter that followed.
Someone even whispered, “This might be leftovers from his home. He must think it’s a picnic outing.” Li Wei’s heart sank. He didn’t expect that his well-intended gift — a gesture of love, now turned into something strange and unwelcome in this foreign setting. The joyful atmosphere disappeared quickly, replaced by an uncomfortable silence as guests looked at the mooncakes as if they were strange objects from another world. Just as Li Wei wished he could disappear, he suddenly remembered what his mother had said with pride before he came here.
注意:
1.词数应为150左右;
2.按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
He quickly calmed down.

【51题答案】
【答案】Dear Peter,
I’m glad you’re interested in my eating habits! I usually have porridge and a boiled egg for breakfast, which gives me energy. For lunch and dinner, I eat rice or noodles with lots of vegetables and some meat or fish. I rarely have snacks or sugary drinks.
Healthy eating is really important. It keeps me energetic in class and helps me stay fit. Without good food, I might feel tired easily and get sick.
What about you? Do you have a typical daily meal in New Zealand? Do you like any healthy local foods? Looking forward to your early reply!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
【52题答案】
【答案】
He quickly calmed down. He took a deep breath and decided to introduce the mooncakes. “Mooncakes are very important in Chinese culture,” he began, his voice steady. “They are round, symbolizing reunion. We eat them during the Mid-Autumn Festival to celebrate family togetherness. Each bite is full of sweet fillings, just like the warmth of a family gathering.” As he spoke, the room fell silent. People listened intently, their curiosity piqued. Some started to nod in understanding, and the awkward atmosphere gradually faded away. Emma took a small bite of the mooncake and her eyes widened in surprise. “It’s delicious!” she exclaimed. Others followed suit, and soon, the laughter turned into praises.
Three months later, Li Wei and his mooncakes appeared at school’s International Food Fair. His booth was decorated with red lanterns and Chinese knots. People queued up to taste his mooncakes. Li Wei introduced the mooncakes with confidence, sharing the cultural significance behind them. Many students and teachers were deeply attracted. They not only enjoyed the sweet taste of the mooncakes but also learned about Chinese traditions. His mooncakes became the star of the fair. Li Wei was overjoyed. He realized that cultural differences could be bridged through sharing and understanding, and his little mooncakes had become a wonderful bridge to connect different cultures.
