Can you imagine that you can save your own life during a heart attack by coughing? Let’s see how.
A heart attack can happen to anyone. Let’s say it’s 4:17 p.m. and you’re driving home (alone of course) after an unusually hard day on the job. Not only was the workload extremely heavy, but you also had a disagreement with your boss, and no matter how hard you tried, he just wouldn’t see your side of the situation. You’re really upset and the more you think about it, the more nervous you become.
All of a sudden you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to spread out into your arm and up to your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home, but unfortunately you don’t know if you’ll be able to make it that far.
What can you do? You’ve been trained in CPR but the guy who taught the course didn’t tell you how to perform it on yourself.
Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, this article seems in order. Without help the person whose heart stops beating properly and who begins to feel faint has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very powerfully. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and last long, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without stopping until help arrives, or until the heart feels to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating.
The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way heart attack victims can get to a phone and, between breaths, call for help.
Now, do you understand the whole matter? Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save their lives!
4. According to the passage, CPR is most probably something done to .
A. regain someone’s breath and heart beat B. help someone treat a heart attack by himself
C. teach people how to stay in good state D. train people how to stay calm when facing dangers
5. According to Paragraph 5, coughing during a heart attack helps .
A. to relax the heart B. to get oxygen into the lungs
C. to keep the blood circulating D. to reduce the pain in the chest
6. We can learn from the passage that .
A. a long day’s work usually results in heart attacks
B. not only the chest aches when one suffers a heart attack
C. people should attend a CPR course to survive heart attacks
D. one should cough loudly immediately when one’s chest aches
7. In which section of a newspaper can you read this passage?
A. Health Care. B. Advertisement. C. Family. D. Teaching.
C
Plenty of scientific work proves that children, and even adults, who learn sign language, gain the benefits not only in the ability to communicate with other sign language users, but also in the wider academic world.
Deaf children who learn sign language at an early age tend to perform better academically. This is partly due to their increased ability to communicate with those around them. However it is also because sign language is not, as many people mistakenly think, a system of gestures representing words, but a complete and complex language system. Thus, children who learn sign language have already learnt about the way language works, which will help in future studies.
Again, for non-deaf children and adults who learn sign language, the academic advantages spill over into social and cultural ones. Firstly, learning sign language allows the speaker to communicate with a whole new community of people and gain an understanding of how they communicate within their community. Secondly, learning a language gives rise to greater confidence for that person, as he is able to communicate with someone who may struggle to do so. And the skills of language learning can easily be applied to learning other languages but also to other academic pursuits.
There can be no doubt that learning sign language is a useful endeavour for anyone — whether they are deaf themselves and live in a house with other deaf people or whether they are non-deaf and do not know anyone who is. The social, cultural and academic advantages of learning this complex language are diverse and should not be taken lightly. And, especially with children, learning a language which helps people with a disadvantage may encourage them in the future to do more volunteering and other such work. This means that the non-deaf child can be given a sense of social responsibility at an early age and taught to embrace all people — not in spite of their differences but because of them.
8. What is sign language according to the author?
A. It is a creative way of expressing ideas. B. It is a complete complex language system.
C. It is a primary language of disabled people. D. It is a system of gestures representing words.
9 What does the underlined word “endeavour” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Experiment. B. Effort. C. Incident. D. Feedback.
10. What quality can a non-deaf child who learns sign language acquire?
A. Being competitive. B. Being courageous.
C. Being responsible. D. Being positive.
11. What conclusion can we draw from the text?
A. Learning sign language brings people an advantage of finding a future job.
B. The numerous advantages of learning sign language should be taken seriously.
C. Non-deaf children should learn sign language due to the differences of the deaf people .
D. It’s unnecessary for non-deaf person who doesn’t know any deaf people to learn sign language.
D
Scientists have made great discoveries. But how have they influenced our personal lives? Do kids in your classroom even know when Einstein lived? You may be wondering: but why is it important to teach kids about modern-day scientists?
First, stories of scientists can encourage kids. Chris Hadfield is a Canadian who went to space, and he’s a real guitar-playing person. He makes singing videos on YouTube! His story can make kids think scientists are also common people. Hearing scientists’ stories makes kids think “I can do that too!”
But not only that, the stories of famous scientists can encourage kids to never give up. Bill Nye was always refused when trying to be an astronaut. But today, he’s made a lot of successes in his role as a popular science educator and engineer. Besides, it’s no secret that scientific discoveries require trying, and trying again.
Another way some scientists can encourage kids is through their diversity (多样性). Neil deGrasse Tyson, for example, is an African-American, which is not common in his field. Such stories can make kids think anyone can be a scientist.
It’s important to know that scientists don’t need to be “gifted” or “good” at school.
Often we consider a scientist as being an extremely smart kid at school. That doesn’t have to be true. They just need to have a great interest in science. Telling students stories of scientists can encourage them to show interest in science. As long as they’re interested, they are likely to become a scientist in the future.
Modern scientists teach kids that knowledge builds upon the foundation (基础) others have laid. This is important — no one can do it alone. Scientists’ stories can encourage today’s young scientists to keep trying. They’ll be encouraged not to give up on the dream of making discoveries. Even if they haven’t made important discoveries, their research may help the following scientists.
12. What can Chris Hadfield’s story tell students?
A. Scientists are interested in different things.
B. Students should have a hobby of their own.
C. Scientists can be ordinary like people around us.
D. Students should consider scientists as their models.
13. Which of the following would the author agree with?
A. African-Americans are more likely to become scientists.
B. Scientists are not necessarily very smart at school.
C. Not all scientists really show interest in science.
D. Scientists are usually good at their schooling.
14. The last paragraph shows us that________.
A. scientists should help each other
B. a scientist should never give up trying
C. making discoveries is necessary for scientists
D. new scientific discoveries may depend on others’ findings
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Why scientists are important to us.
B. Why scientists can encourage students.
C. Why students love stories of scientists.
D. Why students should be taught about scientists.

Valuable Lesson-My Favorite Superhero
After helping his mother Mary sweep, the street as usual, Jack waved goodbye to her and rushed to school. Reminding Jack of safety, Mary smiled and continued her work, with sweat streaming down. Weak and tired as she was, this brave woman still stuck to her job attentively.
In the classroom, Mrs. Evans asked her students to deliver a speech, themed My Favorite Superhero. As for the heated topic, the class got thrilled, hardly waiting to share their opinions. Finally, it came to Jack’s turn. “My favorite superhero.” Jack started to read in front of the class, then he stopped. He was nervous and felt a bit silly, because his classmates all talked about superheroes like Iron Man, Thor, and Wonder Woman while he was the only one who talked about a real person.
“Go on, Jack.” Mrs. Evans encouraged, nodding at him with smiling eyes.
“My favorite superhero is Mary, my mom.” the class burst into laughter. Jack smiled, too, and wet his lips, “You might laugh at me for saying something like that.” He turned calm and peaceful, “But my mom is the most hard-working person in the world. She is a street sweeper for the city, always getting up before sunrise to start her job. It’s her commitment that keeps the street spotless, just with a broom (扫把) and her heart. With autumn coming, I realized how hard it is and that a real superhero doesn’t wear a cape (斗篷) or go on adventures. Besides, she raised us three kids alone. She loves us in her way, and we can feel it. Though we’re short in money, we seem never lack anything. A real hero takes care of his family. I’m helping her before going to school and hope to grew up and be half the hero my mom is.Thank you.”
After the speech. silence spread in the classroom. It was evident that the entire class was moved by Jake’s speech and got speechless.

In this way, heart attack victims can get to a phone and, between breaths, call for help.
Now, do you understand the whole matter? Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save their lives!

However, it is also because sign language is not, as many people mistakenly think, a system of gestures representing words, but a complete and complex language system.
9. What does the underlined word “endeavour” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Experiment. B. Effort. C. Incident. D. Feedback.

【答案】12. C 13. B 14. D 15. D

故填will be observing。
