It was raining heavily, and Karthik was alone at home. The sound of thunder (雷) was so loud that it felt like the gods were fighting in the sky. So he took his favorite novel, Harry Potter, to make himself less afraid.
Again, there was a terrible sound of thunder. He tried to pay all his attention to reading, but the sudden sound of the doorbell stopped him from doing that. It couldn’t be his parents. He looked at the wall clock—it was only ten minutes past three. Usually, they got home after six in the afternoon.
The doorbell sounded again.
“Who’s there?” he shouted. There was no reply.
The doorbell sounded again. He remembered his parents telling him not to open the door without checking who it is.
“Should I answer the bell or not?” thought Karthik. He decided to first prepare himself for a bad thing. He went into a room and came out with a baseball bat (棒球棍), which he hid behind the door in case he needed it. But still, he needed to make sure who was at the door before he opened it. He shouted once again, “Who’s at the door?” There was still no reply. No sound of footsteps, either. He held the baseball bat in one hand and was ready to open the door with the other.
Suddenly, there was a loud cry. “Karthik! Karthik! Why don’t you open the door?”
“It’s surely Dad,” Karthik shouted and rushed forward to open the door.
“Why are you holding a baseball bat?” asked Karthik’s father. For a moment, the boy seemed at a loss for words. Then his father gave him a big smile, perhaps understanding Karthik’s feeling.

Before the 1930s shopping carts (购物车) didn’t appear because nobody needed them. At that time, people could only use iceboxes to store food at home, so they bought a day’s food at a time, usually at different stores, such as fish shops, vegetable shops and meat shops. The rise of supermarkets changed all that.
Sylvan Goldman, who owned a chain of supermarkets in Oklahoma City, noticed that when customers in his stores used hand-held baskets, they often stopped shopping when the baskets became too full or too heavy. He told his staff to approach these customers with full baskets, offer them another basket and hold the full one at the checkout counter (收银台). It was not a useful solution, so Goldman looked for something better.
One evening in 1936, Goldman got an idea as he worked late in his office. He looked at the folding chair (折叠椅) and thought of replacing the seat with two shelves—one higher and one lower than the seat’s usual position, and adding two wheels to the legs. The shelves could hold shopping baskets, which could be taken off when not in use.
After several tries, Goldman built some carts and introduced them in his stores in the following summer. However, they were not popular with the customers. Many housewives said they didn’t want a cart because they already had one to carry their babies. And the man would say, “You mean, with my big strong arm, I can’t carry a small basket like that?”
Goldman didn’t give up. He had people of all ages play as customers and use the carts. It worked, and customers began to give them a try. Within a few years, shopping carts were everywhere.
31. What did people use to store food at home before the 1930s?
A. Iceboxes. B. Shopping carts. C. Trucks.
32. In Goldman’s supermarkets, why did people often stop shopping?
A. Because they wanted to look at the products carefully.
B. Because there were too many people.
C. Because the baskets became too full or too heavy.
33. What does the underlined word “approach” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Turn off. B. Walk up to. C. Get along with.
34. When did Goldman start using carts in his stores?
A. In 1935. B. In 1937. C. In 1939.
35. What can we know about Goldman from the passage?
A. He was clever and didn’t give up easily.
B. He was the first to start a supermarket.
C. He didn’t care about his customers at all.

第三节(共8小题,1至5每小题1分;6、7每小题2分;8小题6分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容按要求完成任务
Yuan Dan was actually the Spring Festival
“Happy New Year!” This is how we celebrate Yuan Dan today. But for thousands of years, “Yuan Dan” meant the traditional Lunar New Year, not the New Year on January 1st.
In ancient times, it was the year’s most important festival. The date often changed depending on the ruling emperor—dynasties like the Xia and Zhou started their years in different months. It wasn’t until the Han Dynasty that the date was changed to the start of the lunar spring. The focus was on remembering ancestors (祖先) and hoping for a good harvest. People first lit (点燃) bamboo—later firecrackers (爆竹) to scare the beast “Nian”. They also drank Tusu wine to keep away from sickness, and enjoyed dumplings or rice cakes. These traditions were famously described in the Song Dynasty poem Yuan Ri by Wang Anshi, “The boom of firecrackers marks the passing of a year, while the spring breeze brings warmth to the Tusu wine.”
The modern New Year appeared in the 20th century. After using the Western calendar in 1912, the government finally set the holidays in 1949. January 1st became “Yuan Dan”, while the lunar celebration was renamed “Spring Festival”.
Today, Yuan Dan is a public holiday for relaxation rather than strict rituals (仪式). People use this time to rest, travel or shop. Young people often attend countdown parties or watch New Year concerts. Unlike Spring Festival, there are no specific traditional foods. Families simply enjoy nice meals together, for it is a symbol of love and reunion. In big cities, celebrations like fireworks shows are also popular among young people.
The New Year is not only a traditional festival of reunion but also a day to connect with the modern world while welcoming a fresh start.

Before the 1930s, shopping carts (购物车) didn’t appear because nobody needed them.
