Would you like to be taught by a robot or a computer? Imagine an AI classroom: there is no robot at the front of the class, just AI programs on your computers and virtual reality (VR) headsets. Human learning coaches are also in classrooms to lend a hand, if needed. Here are some comments from the Internet users.
AI is only as good as the information it learns. It can’t replace a human teacher-especially not when it comes to creative subjects like art or drama Human teachers also manage feelings
(Molly, Sydney, Australia)
AI teachers can pay attention to each pupils’ needs and help them understand subjects they find difficult. This is hard for human teachers in a large classroom with lots of children.
(Zhang Bei, Shanghai, China)
AI technology is already used in lesson planning, so why not use it for teaching too-it would save schools money. And there is a shortage of secondary teachers in the UK-AI teachers could be helpful.
(Oliver, Cambridge, UK)
Using AI to teach pupils is a step too far and that students need human interaction in their lessons. However clever AI is, it can’t connect with pupils or encourage children to work hard and achieve their dreams.
(Jason, New York, USA)
16. What can we find in an AI classroom?
A. A robot and computers. B. Sports coaches and computers.

B. AI teachers do better at dealing with students.

According to the latest survey, China is facing an aging population. In recent years, China’s birth rate (出生率) has been at a low level. In 2024, the birth rate hit a new low—only 9,540,000 babies were born in the whole year. By 2040, China’s population will be 1.35 billion, and about 30% of the people will be over 60 years old. The aging problem is getting worse and worse.

Even toy companies are designing special products for older customers, such as puzzles to improve their memory.

I was not surprised to hear that someone made fun of my appearance (外貌) at my friend’s birthday party. I laughed along, silently agreeing that I was not so good-looking. It made me feel uncomfortable.
Over the next months, I became increasingly self-critical (自我评价的), at first only of my appearance and then of almost everything else. When I kept paying attention to my appearances, I became unable to put myself into my schoolwork.
When a family friend got plastic surgery (整形手术), I told my parents that I wanted to do it, too. A nose job seemed like the answer to everything. To my surprise, my parents agreed and even thought of the surgery as a way to treat my snoring (打鼾).
Finally, the day arrived. I went to the hospital with my mother. In her mind, the surgery was small---she saw it as something quick and easy. But to me, it was more like a life-changing event.
Although I felt fine for the first few hours after I returned home, finally a huge pain was in my head. When I finally got my bandage removed, I cried the whole way to my home. I felt even worse. Over the following weeks, I began to regret. I could not believe that I had gone through this painful thing just because I was laughed at by some classmates.
It was not until I actually had the surgery that I realize that having a prettier nose would not make me feel better about myself. Now I realized that my self-worth lies in many more valuable things: my sense of humor and the power of my mind. You might think all you need is a nose job to be beautiful, but what I want to tell you is that you do not need others to think you are beautiful to be worth something.
23. Why did the writer want to have surgery on her nose?
A. To become more beautiful. B. To make parents happy.
C. To get on with her classmates. D. To solve her snoring problem.
24. What were the writer’s parents opinions when she told them to get the plastic surgery?
A. They were strongly against it. B. They reached an agreement
C. They warned her to study hard. D. They worried about the safety.
25. How did the writer feel after having the nose job?
A. Worried but hopeful. B. Fine and confident.
C Surprised but doubtful. D. Upset and regretful.
26. What is the writer trying to tell us through her story?
A. Appearance plays an important role in shaping our self-worth.
B. Everyone should know their strong points and weak points.
C. Self-worth comes from inside instead of appearance.
D. Others’ opinions about someone’s appearance are important.
【答案】23. A 24. B 25. D 26. C

D
Growing up, we have heard a lot of stereotypes (刻板印象) of how sex (性别) influences interests and jobs. For example, boys do math better than girls, while girls are better at learning languages. We usually think this is because of differences in how boys’ and girls’ brains work. But is it true?
According to past research, some parts of our brains can be different in size. Scientists used to think these differences might influence how well men and women think and do things. They discovered this by scanning (扫描) people’s brains. However, in most of the research, researchers only scanned several hundred people. As said in a 2022 study, for such research to be believable, you would need more samples (样本) of scanning the brains of a few thousand people at least.
In 2021, the UK Biobank, a big database (数据库) used for research, scanned the brains of 40,000 people in the UK, providing new insights. It showed differences between men and women in the size of certain brain parts. About 33% of these parts were found to be larger in men, while another 33% of these parts were larger in women.
However, these differences were very small, often just a size difference in percentage (百分比). The differences are not big enough to form a conclusion (结论) from them, Camille Williams from the University of Texas at Austin, US, told New Scientist.
Also, our brains might change in structure (结构) and size according to our life experiences. For example, even if a part of a man’s brain, responsible for doing math, is larger than that of a woman, it is possibly because he takes jobs which use math skills. So, any brain differences between men and women could be a result, not a reason, of different roles in life and society, said New Scientist.
27. How does the writer organize the passage?
A. By listing different opinions about the same topic.
B. By giving examples first and then making a conclusion.
C. By comparing past research with new one all the time.
D. By showing a problem, discussing research and then giving the result.
28. What does the writer think of the past research?
A. Scanning people’s brains is not helpful.
B. It helps people better understand themselves.
C. Its result was believable.
D. Their sample sizes were too small.
29. What does the underlined word “insights” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Understandings. B. Problems. C. Questions. D. Plans.
30. Which of the following sentences is true?
A. Life experiences can lead to changes in the structure and size of our brains.
B. The differences in brain size are the main reason of different interests and jobs.
C. Scientists are sure that brain differences decide how people think and do things.
D. The UK Biobank found huge differences in brain size between men and women.
【答案】27. D 28. D 29. A 30. A

(Molly Sydney, Australia)
C A robot and human teachers. D. Computers and human teachers.
17. Which of the following ideas does Oliver probably agree with?
A. AI teachers are helpful and money-saving.
B. AI teachers do better at dealing with students.
C. AI teachers build a real relationship with students.
D. AI teachers can teach students as well as human teachers.
18 In which part of the magazine can we read the text?
A. Health. B. Sports. C. Travel. D. Education.

C. Surprised but doubtful.

◆Can you introduce your project?
Sally: ____1_____ The machine is powered by the sun’s energy. It can not only find litter but also put litter into different groups.

◆ _____2____
Sally: When I volunteered at our local litter clean-up, I saw how much litter pollution there was, and I knew that I had to fix this problem.
Allen: When people are listening to my music, they all have different feelings. So that’s where I got the idea to start this project.
◆What was your favourite part of this project?
Sally: Building the robot. I have never had any experience in robotics before, so it was a completely new experience.
Allen: My favourite part was finding out proper music. _____3_____
◆Any advice for science project beginners?
Sally: Follow the scientific rules. It might seem difficult at times, but if you stick to this and change just one variable (变量) at a time, you’ll finally make it.
