Zhang Shengwu, a 60-year-old farmer from Hanshan County, Anhui province, has spent nearly a decade making a five-ton, two-seater homemade invention of submarine (潜水艇) — the “Big Black Fish”.
Zhang grew up near the Yangtze River basin, earning a living as a carpenter (木匠), welder (焊接工人) in the shipping industry. “I’d watched boats all my life,” he said, “but I always felt something was missing.”
It appeared in 2014 when he saw a submarine on TV. “I’d seen wooden and iron boats,” he recalled, “but never one that could go underwater.” Within days, he gathered 5,000 yuan, purchased steel, an engine, and a battery, and began welding. Several months later, his first submarine, 6 meters long, 1.2 meters high, weighing two tons, was ready. The one-man sub could dive just a meter and leaked badly, but it was enough to earn a national patent in 2016. Unsatisfied, he poured more money into a second one. Now the Big Black Fish is 7 meters long and 1.8 meters high, seats two people and can dive to 8 meters. To make it more stable, Zhang poured concrete into the bottom and added two ballast tanks (压载舱) at both ends, which filled with water to dive, and come to the surface. In addition, a pole with a waterproof camera lets Zhang check the riverbed before each dive. This proved practical when he located a fisherman’s lost net during testing.
Zhang says each successful trial steels his resolve. “Only when you try and succeed do you realize what you’re truly capable of,” he said, “people should have something to dream about.” He hopes to make a larger, fully operational model capable of deeper dives and longer distance.
1.Why did Zhang want to build a submarine?
A.To get a national patent. B.To help the local fishermen.
C.To practice his welding skills. D.To fulfill his drive of invention.
2.What is paragraph 3 of the text mainly about?
A.The process of improving the submarine. B.The difficulties in making the submarine.
C.The inspiration to build something novel. D.The preparations of making the submarine.
3.What does the phrase “steels his resolve” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Lowers his spirit. B.Reduces his effort.
C.Comforts his mind. D.Strengthens his will.
4.Which of the following words might best describes Zhang Shengwu?
A.Rich and famous. B.Curious and generous.
C.Determined and creative. D.Traditional and cautious.
【答案】1.D 2.A 3.D 4.C
根据第二段““I’d watched boats all my life,” he said, “but I always felt something was missing.”(“我一辈子都在看船,”他说,“但我总觉得少了些什么。”)”和第三段“It appeared in 2014 when he saw a submarine on TV. “I’d seen wooden and iron boats,” he recalled, “but never one that could go underwater.”(2014 年,他在电视上看到潜水艇,由此萌生了(造潜水艇的)想法。“我见过木船和铁船,”他回忆道,“但从未见过能潜入水下的船。”)”可知,张想造一艘潜艇是为了实现他的发明愿望。故选D。
2.主旨大意题。根据第三段“Several months later, his first submarine, 6 meters long, 1.2 meters high, weighing two tons, was ready. In addition, a pole with a waterproof camera lets Zhang check the riverbed before each dive.(几个月后,他首艘长6米、高1.2米、重达两吨的潜水艇终于造好了。 故选A。
根据最后一段“He hopes to make a larger, fully operational model capable of deeper dives and longer distance.(他希望制造一个更大的、完全可操作的模型,能够下潜更深、航行更远。)”和划线词前文“each successful trial(每次成功的试验)”可知,成功的试验坚定了他的决心,steels his resolve意为“坚定他的决心”,和Strengthens his will意思相近。故选D。
根据第一段“Zhang Shengwu, a 60-year-old farmer from Hanshan County, Anhui province, has spent nearly a decade making a five-ton, two-seater homemade invention of submarine (潜水艇) — the “Big Black Fish”.(来自安徽省含山县的60岁农民张胜武,耗时近十年打造出一艘重达五吨、可容纳两人的自制潜水艇——“大黑鱼”。)”
A
In a small village in Pakistan, I drove cattle along the village’s edge day in and day out. Life was simple as a cowherd (牧牛人), with mud homes and green fields, yet my dreams were great. One day, a group of students in uniforms sparked (引发) my curiosity. I demanded to see their books, and the pictures within the books fueled my imagination. I confirmed my dream to attend school.
Though my family was poor, my heart longed for the world beyond the village. Months later, my uncle, a man with great determination, convinced my parents of the value of education. I entered primary school, my mind absorbing every lesson like crazy.
My academic journey faced a challenge when I decided to study in Karachi, a dynamic city known for its rich culture and excellent schools. The villagers had a doubt that a boy from the fields could dream of such heights. Though I struggled with low spirits and even faced a difficult time, my brother’s words, “Your challenges are catalysts to success”, kept ringing in my mind. I turned to writing, finding comfort and recognition in words.
Years later, college fees were another obstacle. A mountain of debt seemed impossible to pay off. But I found a part-time job at a newspaper, which led to a chance to work in Hyderabad and then a career in calligraphy and advertising. This experience was a turning point, letting me see the world I had dreamed of, where my skills were valued and my potential was shown.
Reflecting on the past, the doubters hold no power. My story is a proof of the power of dreams and hard work. I hope my journey inspires others to chase their dreams, and to believe that every challenge is an opportunity to rise higher.

Imagine a bustling city square captured by a drone (无人机) — thousands of people moving, interacting, and making decisions in real time. Now, picture artificial intelligence (AI) analyzing this scene, not just counting faces, but inferring social patterns, emotional states, and even predicting crowd behavior. This vivid image illustrates how AI is transforming the social sciences, offering unprecedented tools to understand human complexity.
Take sociology, for example. Researchers at Stanford University used machine learning to analyze millions of historical newspaper articles, revealing shifts in public sentiment during economic crises. Similarly, linguistic experts have employed natural language processing to screen thousands of lawmaking speeches, identifying hidden ideological (意识形态的) trends that traditional methods might miss. In anthropology (人类学), AI-driven facial recognition has helped decode non-verbal communication trans-culturally, enriching cross-cultural studies.
AI may also play a role beyond Earth. In China’s ambitious space-based solar power project — a plan to collect solar energy in orbit and beam it to Earth — AI optimizes the positioning of solar panels, predicts energy transmission efficiency, and screens out signal interference from cosmic noise. This shows how AI can support not only social understanding but also the technological infrastructure that shapes future societies.
While comparative research highlights AI’s unique edge, critics warn of ethical pitfalls. “AI doesn’t eliminate bias — it often makes it worse,” cautions Dr. Elena Martinez, a sociologist at the London School of Economics. Algorithms (算法) trained on biased data may reinforce stereotypes or misrepresent groups that are often left out. Moreover, AI can ignore crucial subtle differences — like sarcasm (讽刺) or cultural expressions — leading to inaccurate interpretations. On the other hand, when properly designed, AI can also screen harmful misinformation from research inputs, improving data integrity.
Public opinion remains divided. While institutions like UNESCO advocate for “human-centered AI” in social research, many citizens fear being watched too closely. A 2025 Eurobarometer survey showed that 58% of Europeans support AI in academic research but oppose its use in monitoring public behavior without permission.
Looking ahead, the combined effect of AI and social sciences promises deeper insights into global challenges — from climate migration to mental health epidemics. As MIT’s Media Lab suggests, the future lies not in replacing human judgment, but in supporting it. With transparent algorithms, fair data practices, and strong collaboration, AI could become the most powerful lens yet for understanding society — not by replacing the human element, but by revealing its hidden dimensions.
5.What can be inferred from the first three paragraphs about the role of AI in social science research?
A.AI helps find hidden patterns traditional methods may miss.
B.AI takes the place of old ways altogether in anthropology studies.
C.Linguistic experts use AI only for modern lawmaking speeches.
D.AI has supported technological infrastructure in China’s space project.
6.The word “screen” in Paragraph 4 most probably means ______.
A.Observe. B.Block. C.Ignore. D.Display.
7.According to the passage, what is one reason AI might produce biased results in social studies?
A.It uses too little data. B.It cannot work outside labs.
C.Governments control it secretly. D.It often misses subtle meanings like sarcasm.
8.What is the author’s attitude toward the future of AI in social sciences?
A.Skeptical and critical. B.Indifferent and neutral.
C.Optimistic but cautious. D.Overly enthusiastic.
【答案】5.A 6.B 7.D 8.C

Similarly, linguistic experts have employed natural language processing to screen thousands of lawmaking speeches, identifying hidden ideological (意识形态的) trends that traditional methods might miss. In anthropology (人类学), AI-driven facial recognition has helped decode non-verbal communication trans-culturally, enriching cross-cultural studies. 故选A项。
根据第四段中的“On the other hand, when properly designed, AI can also screen harmful misinformation from research inputs, improving data integrity. (另一方面,如果设计合理,人工智能也可以从研究输入中screen有害的错误信息,提高数据的完整性。)”可知,要提高数据的完整性,应该是“屏蔽”有害的错误信息,由此可推测,此处“screen”的意思是“屏蔽、阻挡”,与“block”含义相近。故选B项。
7.细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Moreover, AI can ignore crucial subtle differences — like sarcasm (讽刺) or cultural expressions — leading to inaccurate interpretations. (此外,人工智能会忽略关键的细微差异——比如讽刺或文化表达——从而导致不准确的解读。)”可知,人工智能在社会研究中产生偏见性结果的原因之一是它会遗漏讽刺等细微含义。故选D项。
8.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Looking ahead, the combined effect of AI and social sciences promises deeper insights into global challenges — from climate migration to mental health epidemics. As MIT’s Media Lab suggests, the future lies not in replacing human judgment, but in supporting it. For many, especially teenage girls, change can be terrifying. It often takes weeks, months, or even longer to adjust to new experiences. This is true for a significant milestone that so many students fear: the beginning of high school.
When I started high school, it felt like my entire world had turned upside down. Since I came from a small middle school, the leap to a larger all-girls school was stressful. I worried about fitting in this new environment. To make matters even more daunting, my best friend chose a different school, leaving me to brave this new chapter (篇章) on my own.
Luckily, our school worked hard to ensure freshmen felt comfortable during their first year of high school. On the very first day, we took part in Tiger Camp, a camp designed to ease us into high school life. We played team-building games, met our small group leaders, and got to know our classmates better. By the end of the camp, I already felt a sense of belonging.
Once the school year started, one of the first major events I attended was the Club Carnival, which introduced us high school freshmen to a wide variety of extracurricular activities here. I joined the Friendly Fashion Club and a book club, both of which gave me a chance to meet like-minded students.
After I adapted (适应) to the new school, there were still more challenges waiting for me. The workload was heavy, and I quickly realized that keeping up with the numerous subjects and constant assignments would be challenging: Not only did the subjects become more difficult, but the expectations were higher, and the exams seemed much. However, as time went on, I began to develop better time management skills and learned how to deal with my studies better.
With time, I learned to accept the challenges, knowing that every difficulty was an opportunity to get better. As I discovered, even the worst storms pass, and just as clouds give way to blue skies, my fears eventually disappeared.
9.What does “daunting” underlined in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Confusing. B.Frightening. C.Surprising. D.Encouraging.
10.How did the events held by the school mainly help the writer?
A.By providing academic support. B.By teaching her study methods.
C.By introducing her to her teachers. D.By involving her in community.
11.Paragraph 5 mainly about the author’s ________.
A.fearful heart B.easy adaptation C.peer pressure D.academic stress
12.What can be concluded from the last paragraph?
A.The writer found high school painful.
B.The writer achieved personal growth.
C.The writer considered difficulties as blocks.
D.The writer found fears stayed despite efforts.

根据第三段“On the very first day, we took part in Tiger Camp, a camp designed to ease us into high school life.(在第一天,我们参加了Tiger Camp,这是一个旨在帮助我们适应高中生活的营地)”以及第四段“Once the school year started, one of the first major events I attended was the Club Carnival, which introduced us high school freshmen to a wide variety of extracurricular activities here.(开学后,我参加的第一项重要活动就是社团狂欢节。这次活动让我们这些高一新生得以了解到这里丰富的课外活动内容)”可知,学校的这些活动让作者更好地融入社区。故选D。
11.主旨大意题。根据第五段“After I adapted (适应) to the new school, there were still more challenges waiting for me. The workload was heavy, and I quickly realized that keeping up with the numerous subjects and constant assignments would be challenging: Not only did the subjects become more difficult, but the expectations were higher, and the exams seemed much. However, as time went on, I began to develop better time management skills and learned how to deal with my studies better.(在我适应了新学校之后,仍有更多的挑战等着我。学习任务很繁重,我很快意识到要跟上众多科目和不断增多的作业量将会是件困难的事:不仅科目变得更难了,而且期望也更高了,考试的难度也更大了。然而,随着时间的推移,我开始培养出更好的时间管理能力,并学会了更好地处理我的学业)”可知,本段主要讲的是作者面临的学习压力。故选D。
12.推理判断题。根据最后一段“With time, I learned to accept the challenges, knowing that every difficulty was an opportunity to get better. As I discovered, even the worst storms pass, and just as clouds give way to blue skies, my fears eventually disappeared.(随着时间的推移,我学会了接受这些挑战,明白每一个困难都是让自己变得更好的机会。我发现,即便是最猛烈的风暴也会过去,就像乌云会让位于晴朗的天空一样,我的恐惧最终也消失了)”可知,作者随着时间的推移,学会了接受挑战,恐惧也消失了,说明作者经历了个人成长。故选B。

② Try to boost your confidence by developing your hobbies and strengths.
③ Remember that inner beauty is more important than external beauty, so appreciate your own good qualities.
Dear Tom,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re addicted to editing photos online and feel anxious about the number of likes.
In my opinion, we shouldn’t care too much about external appearance. True beauty comes from inner qualities like kindness and honesty. Excessive photo editing may make you have unrealistic expectations, which is harmful to your confidence. You should learn to accept yourself as you are and appreciate your own strengths. Why not spend less time on editing photos and more time on developing your hobbies? This will help you build a positive self-image.
I hope my advice can help you.
Best wishes,
Li Hua

A.Lowers his spirit. B.Reduces his effort.
C.Comforts his mind. D.Strengthens his will.
4.Which of the following words might best describes Zhang Shengwu?

1.What first inspired the author to chase education?
A.The dynamic culture of Karachi.
B.His brother’s encouraging words.
C.The pictures in the students’ books.
D.His uncle’s persuasion to his parents.
2.What does the underlined word “catalysts” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Barriers. B.Driving forces. C.Selections. D.New sufferings.
3.Which is key to the author’s career success?
A.His early experience as a cowherd.
B.His excellent academic performance.
C.His working experience at a newspaper.
D.His receiving recognition at college in Hyderabad.
4.What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A.To describe the challenges of rural life in Pakistan.
B.To explain the importance of family support in education.
C.To share his personal career development in creative industries.
D.To encourage readers to achieve their dreams despite difficulties.
