Last summer, I joined a youth travel group to explore the Silk Road. It was a journey full of surprises and cultural discoveries. Before the trip, I only knew the Silk Road from textbooks, but I never imagined how 1 it would be to experience it in person.
On the first day, we arrived in Xi’an, the starting point of the ancient Silk Road. The moment I saw the Terracotta Army, I was 2 by its grandeur. Our guide told us that each warrior has a unique face, which shows the superb craftsmanship of the Qin Dynasty. In the evening, we watched a traditional dance performance. The dancers’ beautiful costumes and graceful movements 3 us to the ancient times.
During the trip, we also visited some small towns along the Silk Road. In one of them, we met a local craftsman who has been making paper-cutting 4 more than 40 years. He taught us some basic skills, and I was amazed by how a simple piece of paper could be turned into a beautiful work of art. He told us that paper-cutting has been passed down from generation to generation and is now popular among foreign tourists 5 its unique cultural charm.
On the way to Dunhuang, we drove through a vast desert. The scenery was breathtaking. At night, we camped under the stars. We shared stories about our hometowns and dreams. It was a moment of 6 that I would never forget.
In Dunhuang, we visited the Mogao Grottoes. The murals (壁画) there are so beautiful that they left a deep 7 on me. Our guide explained the stories behind the murals and how they reflect the cultural exchanges between China and other countries in ancient times. I realized that the Silk Road is not just a trade route, but also a bridge for cultural communication.
The trip lasted for two weeks, but it felt like a lifetime. I not only saw many amazing scenic spots but also learned a lot about Chinese history and culture. I understand that cultural heritage is a precious gift from our ancestors. We should 8 it and pass it on to future generations.
This journey also changed my view on travel. Travel is not just about visiting famous places; it’s about experiencing different cultures, meeting new people, and 9 ourselves. I decided that I will travel more in the future to explore the beauty of the world and 10 my horizons.

A few days ago, I received a letter from my Aunt Lorraine.
It was a handwritten letter 1 me for some Shanghai cookies I had sent her. Aunt Lorraine is ninety-one years old and she has wonderful 2 . That is why she sent me the “thank you” letter. She also has wonderful handwriting. Her penmanship (书法) is smooth. Each letter and word is perfectly formed. It is a 3 to read.
Aunt Lorraine was educated half a century ago. At that time, penmanship was 4 an important skill. Now, it is the age of e-mail and social media. 5 people have the time or want to practice their penmanship or write letters by hand.
This is unfortunate. In my opinion, good penmanship still counts. This is especially true in school. If you want to get good grades on your article, beautiful handwriting will be important. Your article might be full of good ideas. However, 6 handwriting can turn an A into a B.Awful handwriting can get you a D!
Good penmanship has other benefits (益处), too. 7 it’s a skill, it trains your brain and develops your learning abilities. It also helps you organize your thoughts. And, believe it or not, that slow process (过程) of pushing a pen 8 paper improves your reading, spelling and even your pronunciation of English.
Apart from all these educational benefits, good penmanship also has 9 benefits. A beautifully written letter to a friend is something he or she will treasure forever.
