Martin had worked in his family’s bakery (面包店) all summer and had saved over a thousand dollars. His father gave him his last paycheck and reminded him, “Do you remember that you agreed to donate 10% of your earnings (收入) to a charity?”
Martin didn’t want to give away his money because he was planning to buy a new video game, but he knew it was useless to argue with his parents. They donated 10% of every sale to a hospital every month.
Martin searched online to find a way to donate. He found an organization that helped people make small loans (贷款), such as $50 or $100, to those in need. When the borrower paid the money back, the donor could lend it to someone else. Martin read stories of people worldwide who had received loans and used them to better their lives.
Martin found a woman who had asked for $100 to buy a sewing machine so she could work to support her family, including sending her children to school. There was a photo showing her standing in her house. Martin was shocked by the condition of the house. The walls looked old with some holes, and the floor was hard-packed dirt. Martin decided that his new video game could wait, and he clicked the Donate Now button.

The woman had bought a new sewing machine, and people were coming from other villages to buy her clothes! There was a new picture at the bottom of the message showing the woman in a new dress and her two children in their school uniforms. The holes in the walls had been fixed.

Every morning, the first thing John does is picking up his phone to check the number of likes and comments he received on social media (媒体) overnight. He feels more cheerful as he sees many people are involved. When there are hardly any replies, he feels disappointed for the whole day. John’s experience is common in today’s world, showing just how deeply technology can influence our emotions and mental (精神上的) state.
In 2023, researchers did an in-depth study to examine the mental influence of social media use. They created an online survey that included questions not only about how often and how long they use social media but also about their emotional reactions during and after using these platforms (平台). Users needed to describe changes of their feelings like worry, loneliness, or happiness caused by certain social media interactions.
The survey collected data from millions of users all over the world, allowing research teams to analyze ways of emotional well-being related to digital habits. They found that users who focused on likes and comments often experienced changes of feelings. Teenagers and young adults were especially weak, likely as the result of their dependence on online interactions for social connections. These findings suggest that while technology offers convenience, it also has various effects on mental health.
The research showed that technology itself might not be the direct cause of mental health problems like worry; rather, it’s how people use it that makes the difference. For example, people who limit their screen time are likely to experience stronger mental well-being. This stresses the importance of mindful technology use.
Other studies further show that negative effects from technology use can be avoided. In a French village, researchers did a separate experiment, encouraging users to limit their phone use and get involved in face-to-face conversations. After several weeks, users reported better mental health, with reduced levels of worry and loneliness. Such studies stress the importance of the harmony (和谐) between digital interactions and real-life relationships.
In the end, while technology is a powerful tool, its effect on mental well-being largely depends on how we choose to fit it into our lives. Experts recommend having “tech-free” hours, especially during family meetings or before bed. With a thoughtful way, we can enjoy the advantages of technology without harming emotional health.
27.Why did the researchers do the study in 2023?
A.To improve social media platforms.
B.To encourage people to be positive users.
C.To count the number of social media users worldwide.
D.To understand the mental health effects of social media.
28.According to the passage, who is more likely to have problems with mental health?
A.Social media runners. B.Teenagers and young adults.
C.People who limit internet use. D.People who avoid family meetings.

Is your glass half-empty or half-full? How you answer this question may show your outlook on life, your attitude towards yourself, and whether you’re optimistic or pessimistic — and it may even affect your health.
Some studies show that personality can affect many areas of your health. The positive thinking that usually comes with optimism is a key part of effective stress management. And effective stress management is connected with many health benefits. If you tend to (倾向于) be pessimistic, don’t despair — you can learn positive thinking skills.
Positive thinking doesn’t mean that you disregard less pleasant situations in your life. Positive thinking just means that you deal with unpleasantness in a more positive and productive way.
Positive thinking often starts with self-talk. Self-talk is the endless stream of unspoken thoughts that run through your head. These automatic (无意识的) thoughts can be positive or negative. If the thoughts are mostly negative, your outlook on life is more likely pessimistic. If your thoughts are mostly positive, you’re likely an optimist — someone who practices positive thinking.
Researchers continue to explore the effects of positive thinking and optimism on health. They found that people who had a more positive outlook were more likely to get regular physical exercise, eat a healthier diet, and get more quality sleep. Clearly, there are many benefits of positive thinking. But why does positive thinking have such a strong effect on physical and mental health?
One reason is that having a positive outlook enables you to deal better with stressful situations, which reduces the harmful health effects of stress on your body. It’s also thought that positive and optimistic people tend to live healthier lifestyles — they get more physical activities and follow a healthier diet.
Even if you are not a natural-born optimist, there are things you can do to learn how to think more positively and become a positive thinker. Here are some examples of negative self-talk and ways to turn them into positive thinking.
Negative self-talk
I’ve never done it before.
There’s no way it will work.
No one communicates with me.
I’m not going to get any better at this.
Positive thinking
It’s an opportunity to learn something new.
I can try to make it work.
I’ll see if I can start the conversation.
I’ll give it another try.
If you tend to have a negative outlook, don’t expect to become an optimist overnight. But with practice, gradually your self-talk will have less self-criticism (自我批判) and more self-acceptance. You may also become less critical of the world around you.
30.The word “disregard” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.
A.lose interest in B.set a limit on C.look forward to D.pay no attention to
31.Which of the following examples shows positive thinking?
A.I can work this out with time. B.This problem is beyond me.
C.I don’t have the resources. D.I don’t think I can do it.
32.The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.pessimistic thinkers are born with it B.pessimists always have bad sleep quality
C.positive thinkers manage stressful situations well D.having a positive outlook helps you avoid unpleasantness
33.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A.To introduce optimism and pessimism. B.To show how self-talk affects the thoughts.
C.To highlight the benefits of positive thinking. D.To encourage people to be positive by practicing.

A few months later, Martin received an email from the organization. He read through the message and smiled. His $100 had just been repaid. The woman had bought a new sewing machine, and people were coming from other villages to buy her clothes! There was a new picture at the bottom of the message showing the woman in a new dress and her two children in their school uniforms. The holes in the walls had been fixed.
“My money did all this?” Martin was very surprised and happy. He re-lent the $100 to a man who needed money for his coffee farm. With his part-time jobs at weekends, he decided to continue lending 10% of his earnings to help more people, following his parents’ footsteps.
24.Martin didn’t want to donate his money at first because ________.

29.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Unexpected Challenges: Changes of Social Connections
B.Silent Influence: Social Media’s Effect on Emotions
C.Silent Influence: Technology’s Effect on Our Minds
D.Unexpected Challenges: Changes of Digital Habits
D
