Matt and his mum lived in the country next to a huge forest. There were trees and birds everywhere. They went walking in the forest every weekend. They looked for birds, found feathers and picked berries. Matt thought he lived in the best place in the whole world.
But at the start of spring, everything changed. His family moved to the city as his mum found a new job. There was no forest in the neighborhood, and that made Matt sad.
Mrs. Potter, Matt’s new neighbour, was an old lady who lived alone. One day, Matt saw her carrying a pot into the building. It seemed a bit heavy, so Matt helped carry it to her home.
Once Mrs. Potter opened the door, Matt was amazed at the view in front of him. It was a forest, but it wasn’t like any forest he had seen before. There were many trees — real ones. But each one was in a pot. They were everywhere in the room. Matt felt as if he was in a fairy land.
“I see you like indoor forest,” said Mrs. Potter. “They are beautiful,” said Matt.
“Would you like to take some trees home? Thank you so much for helping me today,” said Mrs. Potter.
“yes, please!” said Matt, excitedly.
Mrs. Potter gave Matt two potter(盆栽)trees. She showed him how to care for the trees. Matt kept them on his balcony(阳台).
One day, he saw something moving below the trees. It was a far blackbird eating the berries of the trees! Matt smiled. He felt like he was living beside a forest again.
26. What did Matt and his mum do in the forest?
A. They took a walk. B. They planted trees.
C. They drew a picture. D. They watered flowers.
27. What does the underlined “that” in paragraph 2 refer to?

C. There was no forest around Matt’s new home.
D. There was no change in Matt’s life in the city.
28. How did Mrs. Potter thank Matt?
A. By taking care of Matt. B. By giving Matt two trees.
C. By greeting Matt on her balcony. D. By carrying a pot to Matt’s home.
29. How did Matt probably feel when he saw the blackbird?
A. Tired. B. Lonely. C. Relaxed. D. Happy.

Though among the most popular pets, house cats remain mysterious(神秘的)to many. While we know exactly when they’re hungry, it is often unclear what they pay attention to at other times. Now, researchers have found that these independent animals can learn the names of other cats they live with. Some might even connect their human friends’ faces with their names.
The researchers examined the actions of cats living in homes with at least two cats, and compared them with cats living in cat cafes. In the test, each cat was shown a photo of a cat they knew on a screen while a recorded voice played correct and incorrect names. When the name did not match the cat they were looking at, the house cats would fix their eyes on it longer and tilt(倾斜)their heads, as if thinking. “Is this certain to be my friend’s name?”
However, cats living in cat cafes did not act the same way. The researchers suggest that this is because cafe cats are called by a number of names by different visitors. As a result, they have less chance to hear one exact name repeated over and over again, making it harder for them to learn it properly.
The researchers also wondered whether cats can learn human names. The results were less clear than with cat names, but a pattern appeared: Cats that had lived with a larger family of humans for a longer time seemed better at connecting human faces with names.
Unless we can invent a machine that truly understands animals’ thoughts, it’s impossible to know for sure what is going on in a cat’s mind. But this study shows that through everyday family life, cats do seem to remember which name goes with which person. This finding proves our pet cats are really quite smart — they learn far more from living with us than we often realize.
30. What can learn about cats from paragraph 1?
A. They depend on humans too much. B. They are the most mysterious pets.
C. They can learn other cats’ names. D. They are easy to get hungry.
31. What happened during the test when a wrong name was called?
A. House cats watched the screen longer. B. Cats tried to call the right name.
C. The cafe cats acted more strongly. D. House cats stopped tilting their heads.
32. Why didn’t the cafe cats act the same as the house cats?
A. They weren’t as smart as house cats.
B. They didn’t live with a large family.
C. The visitors were not their owners.
D. They heard different names from people.
33. What can we infer from the research?
A. Cats’ name-learning has nothing to do with family size.
B. Cats may need time and daily life to learn human names.
C. Cats remember human names as clearly as their own names.
D. Scientists surely understand cats’ brain when learning names.

From time to time, pets show that they are sweeter and lovelier than some people are. Bill — a pet dog from London became popular online because it did something special. It imitated its injured owner in order to show its sympathy for its owner.
Recently, the owner named Russell Jones posted a heartwarming and funny video on Facebook. The video showed that the pet dog imitated Russell Jones’s behaviour while walking beside him, and in just a few days, the video received over 11,000 likes and 26,000 people shared the video.
From the short video, people found that Russell Jones’s leg had been placed in a plaster one, walking along the street with his dog Bill. The dog is seen walking with his paw raised above the ground in order to copy his owner’s behaviour. “I spent 300 pounds to give it a body check, and the doctor said there was nothing wrong with Bill. It just showed its sympathy for me. Love him.” Russell Jones wrote in the description of his post.”
According to Cesar’s Way, a website, “A number of different animals imitate others within their own groups. People imitate other people. Birds imitate other birds. Monkeys imitate others in their group.”
“But dogs not only imitate other dogs — they copy what people do as well. What’s even more surprising is that they have been known to do so, even when the imitation is not good for them,” Cesar’s Way shows on the webpage.
Why do dogs copy people’s behaviour? “Scientists think that dogs copy people’s behaviour because of thousands of years’ selective breeding and training. Over time, it became a built-in reaction,” reads a website.
34. What does the second paragraph tell us?
A. How popular the video was. B. Why Bill imitated its owner.
C. How Russell Jones got hurt. D. How Russell Jones loved Bill.
35. What can we infer from Russell Jones’s words?
A. He realized his pet was laughing at him.
B. He thought something was wrong with his pet.
C. He thought his pet needed more care and love.
D. He was unhappy because of his pet’s behaviour.
36. How does the writer show us the imitations of animals?
A. By showing some people’s ideas.
B. By showing some results of studies.
C. By showing some examples in a book.
D. By showing some information on a website.
37. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. Ways to look after pets well. B. The reasons for keeping pets.
C. A kind of behaviour of animals. D. Scientists’ new studies on animals.

A video of a 17-year-old blind girl playing Beethoven’s Pathetique Sonata(《悲怆奏鸣曲》)in an international youth piano competition in Shanghai was popular online.
Xiong Linghao started learning the piano at the age of 6. Her favorite star is Beethoven, who began to have hearing problems in his 20s and later went completely deaf. Their physical problems led both of them to build a connection with the world through music.
Xiong became blind because of a medical accident when she was a baby. Her mother discovered her daughter had a talent for music early in her childhood. When she was three, she could play children’s songs on a small electric piano at home. “The piano is my best friend,” said Xiong. “It brings pleasure into my life and gives me courage.”
Learning to play the piano is not easy for blind people. At first, her teacher helped her place her hands and fingers correctly. “Repeated practice is important because I need muscle memory to find the right keys,” she explained.
Her dream is to get into a university in Beijing and give a music performance or music production. “If I could see for three days,” Xiong said, “I would see how I look, prepare a big meal for my parents and get around in the places I’ve been to hundreds of times. Also, I’d like to see with my eyes what the piano that has been with me for more than ten years looks like,” she said.
