It’s no wonder they call her Iron Gran. At the age of 76, she’s the UK’s oldest female Ironman triathlete (铁人三项运动员), and has lost count of the number of marathons she has run. Just as incredible is the fact that Edwina Brocklesby or “Eddie” as she’s known only took up running in her 50s. With her boundless energy and infectious smile she inspires everyone she meets.
As well as her personal achievements, the super-granny also set up the charity Silverfit in 2013. It promotes sport for older people and started with events in London’s parks and has since grown to have 2,000 members. Silverfit offers a range of activities to the over-45s. To make sure no one is excluded due to cost, membership is only £12 per year. As Eddie says: “It’s absolutely essential with our aging population that—they age healthily and that they have fun doing so. Our core message is that it’s never too late to start exercising.”
Len Bass, 76, has been coming along for two years. He wanted to get fit after surviving stomach cancer that left him barely able to walk. Within weeks of joining he had begun to see a difference. “I was bent over when I started, but by the end of the first month I could run up hills. Thanks to Silverfit, today I am really fit, I am off all medication.”
And Marjorie Barnes, 62, from Dulwich added: “I had terrible back problems, and was walking with a stick when a friend recommended Silverfit. I joined Silverfit and within a year I’d alleviated (减轻) my back problems and even entered the London half marathon. I’ve got my freedom back and it’s all due to the wonderful Eddie. She’s amazing.”
Eddie’s personal drive to get fit was driven by her husband’s sudden death in his 50s. Now Eddie has completed at least 12 marathons. “Running with friends helped me greatly after I lost my husband. My advice would be to make the best of your life, and have fun.”
24. What can we learn about Eddie?
A. She came to running late. B. She is the oldest marathon runner.
C. She broke the record for a marathon. D. She always goes on trips to scenic spots.
25. Why did Eddie start a charity?
A. To kill her leisure time. B. To raise money for her career.
C. To support Ironman triathletes. D.To encourage the old to exercise.
26. What did Len Bass say about Silverfit?
A. It helped him realize his marathon dream. B. It freed him from his medication.
C. It helped him make a friend. D. It became a burden to him.
27. How might people most probably find Eddie’s story?
A. Uninteresting. B. Unbearable. C. Inspiring. D. Complex.

Few would be content to go on a multiyear project to Mars with a diet of bland, prepackaged meals. As space organizations plan for longer exploration, they’re faced with the challenge of how to best feed people. Now, researchers have designed the perfect “space meal”: a tasty vegetarian salad. They choose fresh ingredients(原料)that meet male astronauts’ specialized needs for nutritious (有营养的) food and can be grown in space.
Astronauts in space burn more calories than humans on Earth and require extra micronutrients to stay healthy during long periods in space. Also, future long-term tasks will require growing food in an environmentally-friendly way within the spacecraft or settlements on other planets. While researchers have explored methods of growing food in space and what nutrients astronauts require to stay healthy, specific fresh meals have not been developed. So, Volker Hessel and coworkers wanted to make a space meal that meets those unique requirements of spaceflight and tastes good.
First, the researchers examined mixes of fresh ingredients. In this case, their model showed how well the mixes of different foods could satisfy a male astronaut’s daily nutritional needs while using the smallest amount of water for growing the foods. The team was also concerned about environmental protection, selecting ingredients that needed little fertilizer (肥料), time and area to grow and whether uneatable parts could be reused. They found that a vegetarian meal made up of soybeans’, peanuts, sweet potato and sunflower seeds had the best balance of lots of nutrients and low farming needs.
To make sure the chosen mix was tasty, the team made the space meal into a salad for four people to have a taste test here on Earth. One tester said he “wouldn’t mind eating this all week as an astronaut.”Other people went back for second helpings. In the future, the researchers plan to see what their computer model dishes up as choices for female astronauts and add more variety to crops in their database.
28. What does the underlined word “bland” in the first paragraph probably mean?
A. Nutritious. B. Expensive. C. Tasteless. D. Fresh.
29. What does the second paragraph focus on?
A. The challenges of space travel. B. The methods of growing food in space.
C. The problems with multiyear space tasks. D. The reasons for developing the space meal.
30. What do we know about the space food designed by the researchers?
A. It is free from fertilizer. B. It takes a short time to grow.
C. It mixes the ingredients with water. D. It is designed for female astronauts.
31. What is the testers’ attitude towards the space meal?
A. Favorable. B. Doubtful. C. Unconcerned. D. Mixed.

Imagine you’re walking across endless hills, with warm sunshine and the sound of birds all around. This peaceful scene is a rare one in the modern world. Our natural soundscapes (声音环境) are falling silent as bird populations reduce.
Our study explores the link between birdsong and people, specifically on English vineyards (葡萄园). We surveyed bird communities on 21 vineyards and our results showed that vineyards with more bird species (物种) had louder and more complex (复杂的) soundscapes.
But does the silencing of our soundscapes matter to us? The short answer is yes. There is growing evidence about the health benefits of spending time in nature, including reducing risks of heart disease and anxiety.
So as part of our research, we explored the experience of 186 wine-tour participants (参与者) across three vineyards with different soundscapes. We also improved some vineyard soundscapes with hidden speakers, which played the songs of five additional bird species. This was designed to see how participants’ contact with nature would be affected by increasing the kinds of birds and songs.
The results were fascinating. Visitors who experienced louder and more complex sounds — whether on vineyards with naturally richer soundscapes or on those we had improved — reported enjoying the sounds more. They felt more connected to nature and more satisfied with their tour. With richer soundscapes, they felt more mindful and positive during the tours.
Our study shows the direct effect that birdsong has on our happiness and presents a strong argument for protecting natural soundscapes. So, we hope businesses and people will be inspired to invest (投资) in protection and promote connection with nature.
32. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To show opinions. B. To amuse readers.
C. To introduce the topic. D. To explain the causes.
33. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The process of the research. B. The objectives of the research.
C. The findings of the research. D. The importance of the research.
34. What does the underlined word “fascinating” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Too boring. B. Very surprising. C. Quite interesting. D. Much confusing.
35. What do the findings of the study suggest?
A. Doing deeper research. B. Building better businesses.
C. Seeking greater happiness. D. Connecting more with nature.
