Xu Qusheng has been a village doctor for over half a century. After he graduated from medical school, Xu started to work in Yangfang Village, Fengcheng City, in East China’s Jiangxi Province. Acupuncture (针灸) is the most commonly used way to treat pain in traditional Chinese medicine. Xu always uses a set of silver needles (银针) for a long time to help villagers get better. He is the one who can set their mind at rest in the village.
Regarded as “guardians of health”, village doctors like Xu have played an important role in treating farmers. Xu keeps in touch with high-risk patients in the village to follow their health condition closely. Xu says that treatment and medicine are usually free for villagers facing financial difficulties, and he also allows his patients to pay later although he lives a simple life himself. Besides, he never asks the villagers for the medical expenses owed (欠款).
Just before this year’s Spring Festival, Xu, together with his daughter, who returned to the village and followed in his footsteps to become a village doctor, went door to door visiting the old. The health of more than 1,400 villagers in Yangfang has become the responsibility of village doctors like Xu and his daughter. “I see my patients as my family members, and I hope the next generations of doctors in poor areas can continue to be the guardians of villagers,” Xu says.

D. She thinks village doctors’ work is too tiring

A. Hard-working. B. Helpful. C. Talented. D. Serious.
10. Which is the best title for this passage?
A. Village Doctors and City Doctors B. Traditional Chinese Medicine

C
After a game like football, the players might get an X-ray in the hospital if they hurt their legs or arms. A dentist can use X-rays to look at teeth. And airport workers use an X-ray machine to check objects before a plane leaves. Nowadays, X-ray technology is widely used in medicine and other fields.
X-rays were first discovered by a German scientist, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (1845—1923). He found them quite by accident in 1895. One day, he discovered that an unknown kind of radiation (放射线) could hardly pass through hard objects like bones. Later, Röntgen took a photo of his wife’s hand. It clearly showed her ring and her bones. That was the first X-ray photo in the world.
Why is there an “X” in the word X-ray? It’s because Röntgen couldn’t explain exactly how it worked. He just knew that X-rays were new and useful for science. In fact, X-rays soon became an important tool in medicine. With the help of X-rays, doctors could see inside the human body for the first time without surgery.
Röntgen was awarded the first Nobel Prize in physics in 1901 for his discovery. When he was asked what he was thinking at the moment of discovery, he replied, “I didn’t think. I investigated (研究).” Röntgen gave away his Nobel Prize money to his university. And he never took out any patents (专利权) on X-rays, to make sure that the world could freely make use of his discovery.
11. Which of the following is NOT a use of X-ray technology mentioned in the passage?
A. Checking football players’ injured legs. B. Helping dentists examine teeth.
C. Assisting teachers in checking students’ homework. D. Checking objects at airports.
12. What did the first X-ray photo show?
A. Röntgen’s own hand. B. A football player’s injured arm.
C. Röntgen’s wife’s hand with her ring and bones. D. An airport object.
13. Why did Röntgen name the radiation “X-ray”?
A. Because “X” is his favorite letter.
B. Because he couldn’t fully explain how the radiation worked.
C. Because the radiation was first used in medical exams.
D. Because the radiation could pass through all objects.
14. What can we infer about the influence of Röntgen’s choice of not taking patents on X-rays?
A. It slowed down the spread of X-ray technology around the world.
B. It made Röntgen very poor because he lost the chance to earn money.
C. It allowed more people to develop and use X-ray technology quickly.
D. It led to many companies competing to control X-ray technology.
15. What can we learn about Röntgen from the passage?
A. He was only interested in making money from his discovery.
B. He was a careful and selfless scientist.
C. He discovered X-rays after years of planned experiments.
D. He refused to accept the Nobel Prize.

五、书面表达
When Knowledge Meets Life
Learning knowledge is not just for exams, but for solving real-life problems. This ability to connect book knowledge with practice is precious, and I once experienced its power personally.
Last month, my mom wanted to buy a dress in two stores. One offered “30% off” and the other “buy one get one 50% off”. I suddenly remembered what I learned in math class, and I calculated quickly. The dress cost 200 yuan, so the first store’s price was 140 yuan, while the second store was 300 yuan for two, which was 150 yuan each. I told mom the result, and she praised me for using what I learned.
This experience taught me that knowledge is closely linked to life. It’s not just words on paper but a tool to make life easier. In the future, I will keep learning actively and try to apply more knowledge to daily life.
