There is more of a connection between food and culture than you may think. On an individual level, we grow up eating the food of our culture. It becomes a part of who we are. Many associate food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding a special and personal value for us. Food from our family often becomes the comfort food we seek as adults in times of frustration and stress.
On a large scale, traditional food is an important part of culture. It also operates as an expression of culture identity. Immigrants bring it wherever they go, and it is a symbol of pride for their culture and means of coping with homesickness.
Many immigrants open their own restaurants and serve traditional dishes. However, the food does not remain exactly the same. Some materials needed to make traditional dishes may not be readily available, so the taste and flavor can be different from what they would prepare in their home countries. Additionally, immigrants do not only sell dishes to people from the same countries as them, but to people from different countries. Therefore, they have to make small changes to the original dishes to cater to a wider range of customers. Those changes can create new flavors that still keep the cultural significance of the dishes.
We should embrace our heritage (传统) through our culture’s food but also become more informed about other cultures by trying their food. It is important to remember that each dish has a special place in the culture to which it belongs, and is special to those who prepare it. Food is a window into culture, and it should be treated as such.
4. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The specific traditional food. B. The national culture.
C. A traditional expression of food. D. The old-fashioned taste.
5. Why do some immigrants have to change the original dishes in their restaurants?
A. To attach cultural importance to their dishes.
B. To announce the beginning of their life on foreign soil.
C. To make the dishes popular among customers.
D To present their own food culture in a new way.
6. What’s the author’s attitude towards different food cultures?
A. Negative. B. Balanced. C. Unfair. D. Unchangeable.
C
Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal(信号).Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.
Different cultures emphasize(强调)the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust.Even with people at work,it is necessary to spend a lot of time in “small talk”,usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job.In many European countries—like the UK or France—people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafés rather than at the office.
Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures.I once made a speech in Thailand.I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion;instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better,I realized that they thought I was talking too much.In my own culture,we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.
Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values;however,Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude.In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.
People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However,if we can understand them better,a multicultural environment(多元文化环境)will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.
7. In some countries, eating together at restaurants may make it easier for people to .
A. develop closer relations B. share the same culture
C. get to know each other D. keep each other company
8. The author mentions his experience in Thailand to show that .
A. the English prefer to make long speeches
B. too many words are of no use
C. people from Thailand are quiet and shy by nature
D. even talk and silence can be culturally different
9. According to the text, how can people from different cultures understand each other better?
A By sharing different ways of life.
B. By accepting different habits.
C. By recognizing different values.
D. By speaking each other’s languages.
10. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Multicultural Environment
B. Cross-Cultural Differences
C. How to Understand Each Other
D. How to Build Up a Relationship

How time flies! Two weeks went by, and our exchange activities ended. On behalf of my school, I would like to express my feelings.

We went to the restaurant to taste the Chinese traditional food, which was very delicious. While visiting the art exhibition, we discussed the great artists’ works.
