Ⅲ.阅读理解
In the ongoing battle against climate change, methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, has often taken a back seat to carbon dioxide (CO2). However, recent findings have shown that methane, which is over 80 times more effective at trapping heat than CO2, plays a significant role in accelerating global warming. Despite breaking down more quickly than CO2, methane's immediate impact is undeniable, making it a critical target in the fight to slow climate change.
Advanced technologies are now capable of tracking methane emissions with extraordinary accuracy. According to a newspaper, these tools allow experts to figure out exactly where methane is leaking.
A major source of methane emissions comes from the oil and gas industry, where old and abandoned(废弃的) oil wells leak methane into the atmosphere. These wells are left uncapped and can release poisonous gases for decades. In the US, particularly in Louisiana, this has become a significant environmental issue.
Without the proper clean-up or regulation, the methane released from these wells can worsen the climate crisis. Recently, laws have been proposed to hold oil companies culpable for these emissions, making it their duty to close abandoned wells tightly. Beyond abandoned wells, the oil industry also contributes to methane leaks through the process of extracting and transporting natural gas. While the industry markets liquefied(液化的) natural gas (LNG) as a cleaner alternative to other fossil fuels, the reality is that it still contributes significantly to methane emissions. Experts point out that LNG export is a ticking “greenhouse gas time bomb”, as the process of extracting and shipping LNG results in large amounts of methane being released into the atmosphere.
While industrial activities play a major role in methane emissions, the global food system also contributes. Methane is emitted by rice cultivation and food waste. Reducing methane from the food sector is critical to limiting the global temperature rise.

2.How do abandoned oil wells do harm to the environment?
A.They give off poisonous gases into the air.
B.They trap large amounts of heat from the air.
C.They release much waste water into rivers.
D.They cause diverse environmental problems.
3.What does the underlined word “culpable” mean in paragraph 4?
A.Suitable. B.Understandable.
C.Explainable. D.Responsible.
4.What might the author continue talking about?
A.Solutions to dealing with methane emissions.
B.The relations between methane emissions and food waste.

Ⅳ.七选五
Protecting the Ecological Environment
As we all know, the ecological environment is crucial for the survival and development of all life on Earth. It provides us with essential resources such as clean air, fresh water, and rich soil. 1
Industrialization has led to increased emissions of pollutants into the air and water. Factories release large amounts of waste gas and liquid, which not only damage the quality of the air we breathe but also pollute rivers and lakes. 2 Vast areas of trees are being cleared for agriculture, logging, and urban expansion. This destroys the habitats of countless species and contributes to soil loss.
3 Governments around the world have been passing stricter environmental laws and regulations. These laws are effective in controlling industrial pollution. For example, they set limits on the number of pollutants that factories can release and require heavy fines as a punishment.
Renewable energy sources are also being increasingly used. Solar and wind energy, in particular, are catching on. 4 Renewable energy sources can reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and lower carbon emissions.
In addition, individuals can also play a vital role in protecting the ecological environment. We can start with simple things in our daily lives, such as saving water and electricity. 5 We can also choose to use public transportation or bicycles instead of private cars.
Moreover, raising public awareness of environmental protection is essential. Only when everyone realizes the importance of protecting the ecological environment as well as takes action can we hope to have a sustainable future.
A.Deforestation is another major issue.
B.This helps to conserve energy and reduce waste.
C.Cutting carbon emissions is essential for our welfare.
D.After all, their cost may be a burden on our lives.
E.They are clean and sustainable alternatives to traditional energy.
F.To address the threats, human beings are urged to take some measures.
G.However, human activities have been posing a serious threat to it recently.

Ⅴ.读后续写
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In the heart of the forest, there was an annual event that all animals looked forward to—the Great Forest Race. The big animals, like the majestic deer, the powerful bears, and the swift foxes, always dominated the race. They believed that their size and strength were the key to victory.
Among the small animals, there was a brave rabbit named Hopper who had always dreamt of winning the Great Forest Race. Hopper was small, but he had quick feet and a determined spirit.
The day of the race arrived, and the forest was filled with excitement. The big animals took off, their powerful legs carrying them swiftly through the forest. The small animals, led by Hopper, followed closely behind.
As the race progressed, the big animals began to slow down. Their size and strength, which they had thought were advantages, became obstacles as they struggled to navigate the twisty paths and steep hills of the forest.
Hopper, on the other hand, bounded gracefully over the obstacles. His small size allowed him to weave through the trees with ease, and his determination kept him going strong.
One by one, the big animals began to fall behind. They watched in amazement as Hopper and the other small animals passed them by.
Finally, the small animals, led by Hopper, had not only participated but also triumphed in the face of adversity. The big animals realized that they had been wrong to underestimate the small animals. They had judged them based on their size, without considering their skills or determination.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
From that day forward, the big animals treated the small animals with respect.

One possible version:
From that day forward, the big animals treated the small animals with respect. They recognized that strength and size were not the only factors that determined success. Hopper, the brave rabbit, became a hero to all the animals in the forest. His determination and perseverance inspired them to never give up on their dreams. The big animals learned a valuable lesson from Hopper and the other small animals: never to judge someone based solely on their appearance or perceived limitations.
The Great Forest Race became a symbol of unity and cooperation. Every year, animals from all over the forest came together to participate in the race, regardless of their size or strength. They worked together to overcome obstacles and celebrated each other's success. The race became a time for animals to come together, appreciate their differences, and recognize that every animal, big or small, had a role to play in the harmony of the forest. Hopper's victory not only changed the way the animals saw each other, but it also changed the fabric of their community, making it stronger and more inclusive than ever before.
