Trees are one of the oldest plants on our Earth. They keep our air clean, make less pollution, make water cleaner and provide (提供) food and building materials.
Just like us, trees change a lot as they grow. At one to three years old, young trees learn how to protect themselves. For example, many trees grow thorns (刺) to stop animals from going near.
At the age of four years old, trees begin to grow very quickly and become strong enough to face many difficulties later in life. At the age of 15, trees become young adults (成年人). They grow more slowly and begin to produce (生长) flowers and fruit.
When the tree is 20 to 25 years old, it becomes a real adult. The tree reaches its largest size. It gives us shade and provides a great place for a tree house, or a place for us to read a book, listen to music and so on. If we all learn how to protect the adult tree, it will live healthily for many years.
Little by little, trees begin to grow older and older and even die. At this time, older trees are still very important in nature. When a tree becomes hollow or part of it dies, it can be a home to small animals.
In many ways, the life of a tree is similar to our own life. When looking at the life of a tree, we should enjoy every minute of its life and take care of the tree!

Schools in China offer traditional subjects. In junior high school, we always have Chinese, math, English, geography, history, music, P. E. and so on.
But these years many schools in China have taught life skills, too. Some people think it helpful for students to live in the real world. But others don’t think so.
As for me, schools should teach students life skills. Life skills such as budget (预算) planning and saving money can stop us from overspending. It would also be a good idea to learn cooking. The skill is the most helpful to us when we are living by ourselves.
Some people think that there is no time for extra subjects at school, and students should learn life skills only at home. But I think we are learning many life skills while taking a traditional class. For example, we can learn teamwork by doing group games in a P. E. class. And doing our homework teaches us the skill of time planning.
So I believe all schools should teach students life skills. This can make sure that students will prepare well for going to college and working after college.

Do you have true friends? Do you want to better understand the relationship between you and your friends? There are three different kinds of friends; “pest friends”, “guest friends”, and “best friends”.
The first kind of friend is an acquaintance (熟人), and all you usually know about them is their names. You may meet this kind of friend at school, or on the bus, but you don’t miss them when they’re not around. When this kind of friend does something bad, you don’t tell them. That is why they are called “pest friends”.
The second kind of friend could also be called “social partners”. They are closer than acquaintances, but not as close as true friends. You know their names, a little of what they like or dislike, and a little of their family histories; you usually have a few things in common, but you don’t talk about anything deep, such as your wishes or fears (恐惧), and they don’t open up to you how they really feel.
The last kind of friend, the “best friend”, is the one you know the deepest. You’re like family, and know everything about each other. You have no problem staying at each other’s houses, and you share your deepest feelings and thoughts. They will correct you when you’re wrong. They will always care about you, and never do anything on purpose (故意地) to hurt you.
We all have our pest, guest and best friends. We should value (重视) all friendships and remember, all best friends start out as just acquaintances.

Chinese cultural heritage (文化遗产) is something that people are really interested in today. For me, I find the Longmen Grottoes (石窟) in Luoyang, Henan, especially wonderful. Last summer, my family and I got to visit this old place.
Longmen sits in the southern part of Luoyang. Two mountains stand opposite each other, looking peaceful in the daylight. As we looked around many of the grottoes, there was one special statue(雕像) that stood out the most. Its face was clear and calm, with a soft smile and a straight nose. When I stood before it, I understood why some people call it the “Mona Lisa of the East”. Around it were some other Buddhist (佛教的) statues. Together, they made a beautiful scene.
However, many of the statues in the Longmen Grottoes have worn away over time. Some of the grottoes are even empty. The Longmen Grottoes are over 1,400 years old. Over the years, some people damaged them while others have worked to protect them. I realized that keeping such treasures (宝藏) safe is important. Even by doing small things, we can help protect these amazing cultural treasures.

Beijing is known as a large and busy city. But if you walk down one of its main streets into a small alley (巷), you may find something different—Beijing’s hutongs.
People say they live in hutongs, but in fact, they live in the buildings on one side of the hutongs. Hutongs are the alleys between houses.

Among all these hutongs, there are certainly some exceptional ones. While most of them are straight, some are curved (弯曲的). Jiuwan Hutong is the one with the most curves. Last summer vacation, I travelled with my family to the Hawkesbury River in Western Sydney. It was one of the most unforgettable summer vacations in my life.
Staying by the river helps us escape from the hot weather and noise of the city. Every day, my family and I got up early to go swimming in the cool water. “Dad,” his son Tim asked, “why is the beach so rocky?” Mr. Smith checked the hotel’s website again. Oh no! He had misread the description—it said “rocky beach” instead of “sandy beach”. But he didn’t want to admit (承认) his mistake. “Son, rocky beaches are great,” he said. “You can collect stones and build rock towers.”
The next day, Mrs. Smith wanted to swim. She put on her swimsuit and ran to the water. After two steps, she jumped back, shouting, “It’s freezing.” Mr. Smith tried to stay positive: “Honey, cold water is good for your skin. Let’s just enjoy the sun.”
On the last day, a hotel worker asked, “Did you have a nice vacation?” Mr. Smith smiled and said, “Yes! We loved the rocky beach and the ‘refreshing (令人精神振奋的)’ water.

E. class.

And because of the popularity (流行) of “20 minutes for parks”, more and more young people like walking in the park every day or on the weekend. Why do they like staying outside?

In the morning, we all took part in a big game. We enjoyed water skiing, wakeboarding (尾波滑水) and other activities. These activities made our family feel closer.
