Every year — for more than 15 years running — Amazon editors come together and read hundreds of books. From there, they make a list of favorites, cutting it down from 60 to 40 and then finally to 20, during a heated debate in Seattle. It’s a long process where emotions run high. Below are 4 of the top 20 picks of 2023, along with quotes (引述) from the editors.
Hello Beautiful
by Ann Napolitano
“Ann Napolitano creates a touching story that centers on the Padavano sisters, who are close to each other — until they aren’t. Hello Beautiful offers big emotions, and that’s exactly what makes it so powerful and so page-turning, which is why we named it the Best Book of 2023 So Far.” — Al Woodworth
Weyward
by Emilia Hart
“Though divided by centuries, three women, who share a unique connection to the natural world and to one another, tell their attractive stories of ill treatment, danger, and adaptability in a beautifully written novel that is an impressive read.” — Seira Wilson
Poverty, by America
by Matthew Desmond
“In 200 powerful and critical pages, Matthew Desmond lays out a clear explanation of inequality that will make you rage (发怒), give in, and feel shame. This book may not be the easiest read, but it’s one of the most important ones.” — Lindsay Powers
King: A Life
by Jonathan Eig
“Eig’s best description of Martin Luther King Jr. is an amazing achievement of writing and research, telling the hardships and heroics of a man who changed the world. This is biography at its absolute finest.” — Al Woodworth
1. How many books have been finally chosen as the best of 2023 by Amazon editors?
A. Four. B. Twenty. C. Forty. D. Sixty.
2. What makes Hello Beautiful stand out?

3. Which book best attracts people interested in the lives of famous people?

Growing up, I was scared of being the center of attention. As the quiet daughter of a military family that moved every two years, I struggled to make friends across three different countries. My accent shifted awkwardly between British and American English, making classroom readings a nightmare. Determined to break free from my shell, I joined my high school drama club—a decision that terrified me more than moving to a new neighborhood.
The first month felt impossible. While others memorized lines effortlessly, I stumbled over self-introduction, my palms sweating under the stage lights. Our director’s improvisation (即兴) exercises were the worst. She’d shout unexpected plots like “You’re an astronaut discovering aliens!”, giving us ten seconds to react. My mind would blank with a lump in my throat.
Yet week after week, something changed. The supportive laughter of my peers replaced my fear of embarrassment. By junior year, I landed a supporting role in our town, delivering lines without trembling. The real breakthrough came during a snowstorm performance when our lead actor fell ill. With only an hour’s notice, I stepped into the role and remembered every line.
This courage spilled into other areas. I began leading history class discussions and volunteered as a tour guide for exchange students. At university, I joined a debate club, using my drama-trained voice to argue environmental policies. Last month, I even hosted a charity auction (拍卖) for 50 guests—something my 15-year-old self would consider unimaginable.
Do I still get nervous? Absolutely. But I’ve learned that imperfection connects us. When I mispronounced during the auction, the crowd chuckled warmly, not cruelly. Now I view each stumble not as failure, but proof that I’m daring to speak up.
4. What made the author uncomfortable during classroom activities?
A. She frequently moved house. B. She met language confusion.
C. She hated reading class. D. She lacked team spirits.
5. What does the underlined word “stumbled over” in the second paragraph mean?
A. Fell over suddenly. B. Spoke out freely.
C. Repeated words constantly. D. Kept in mind easily.
6. How did drama club participation affect the author’s later life?
A. It affected her academic performance. B. It developed her painting skills.
C. It caused serious performance anxiety. D. It increased her social confidence.
7. What does the auction incident show about the author’s growth?
A. She avoids challenging events. B. She focuses on others’ faults.
C. She accepts human imperfection. D. She prioritizes financial success.
C
As we know, bees play an important role in ecosystem. Not only do many of them make honey, but they also pollinate (授粉) local plants, which is good for plant life worldwide to continue. However, habitat loss and environmental changes are threatening these bees. In Australia, 23-year-old biology student Clancy Lester, known as “The Bee Man”, is trying to protect over 2,000 native bee species.
Lester’s passion for nature began in childhood. While researching bad honey harvests with a local group, he realized the urgent need to protect native bees, so he created a website teaching people to build “bee hotels”—rooms that provide shelter for solitary bees, which make up most bee species. Unlike honeybees in hives (蜂房), solitary bees live alone and need sate spaces to nest and lay eggs.
Bee hotels are like natural habitats. They can be made using hollow bamboo, wooden blocks with small holes, or even sand-clay mixtures. Key requirements include morning sunlight and nearby flowers for food. These simple structures offer temporary homes for bees facing habitat loss. Lester stresses that even small efforts, like building a bee hotel, can make a difference: “For humans, it’s a quick project, but for bees, it could save their species.”
Beyond bee hotels, Lester calls on changing city’s green spaces into bee-friendly zones. Grasslands or unused city areas could become gardens filled with native plants, linking parks and bee-friendly zones to create “habitat corridors” for insects. This way can help solve the problem while making cities greener.
Climate change has become a threat to bees, but Lester’s work shows individual actions do matter. Protecting pollinators isn’t just about saving bees—it’s about preserving ecosystems that humans rely on. By building bee hotels or planting flowers, everyone can contribute to a healthier planet. As Lester proves, small steps can lead to a significant change, ensuring these tiny pollinators continue their irreplaceable work.
8. What does Clancy Lester make efforts to do?
A. Reduce pollution in Australian cities. B. Breed honeybees for money.
C. Study the effects of climate change. D. Protect native bee species.
9. What is a must for Clancy Lester’s bee hotels?
A. Morning sunlight and nearby flowers. B. Access to rich water sources.
C Special materials like metal tubes. D. Protection from human activities.
10. What does the underlined phrase “this way” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Building bee hotels with bamboo. B. Covering empty spaces with trees.
C. Creating more bee-friendly zones. D. Educating people about climate change.
11. What does Lester’s work mean to us?
A. Urbanization must be stopped for nature. B. Individual actions can protect ecosystems.
C. Advanced technology is key to saving bees. D. Governments should take insect protection seriously.

【答案】Dear Adam,
Hearing that you failed to adapt to the high school life, I’m writing to provide you with some practical advice that may help you out.
The top priority is to give yourself time. Adjusting to a new environment takes time, so be patient with yourself. Equally important is that you should get involved in extracurricular activities where you will meet like-minded peers and gain a sense of belonging. It would be more beneficial if you manage your time wisely. Try creating a simple schedule to balance your studies, hobbies and rest and this will make your school life more relaxing and attractive.
Hope my suggestions helpful.
Yours,
Li Hua
