A man known for his generous acts of mowing lawns(修剪草坪)for free has sparked
an extraordinary wave of kindness, raising over $700,000 for an elderly woman named
Beth.
Spencer, from CS Mowing, was contacted by a friend at the city about Beth, who
was struggling with an overgrown lawn. The city had issued a warning, threatening to
charge her 240 for maintenance-a fee she couldn't afford.
Spencer visited Beth's home, where she shared her struggles in finding help.Moved
by her situation,he transformed her lawn for free.Beth was overwhelmed(溢于言表的)
with gratitude, brought to tears by the kind gesture.Spencer shared the heartwarming
transformation in a video titled "Her Tears Said It All:'My Prayers Have Been
Answered'",and the response was overwhelming.
Viewers were eager to help Beth beyond her lawn, suggesting donations to address
accessibility issues at her home, such as installing a ramp ()repairing her
driveway, and adding a chair lift.Spencer set up a GoFundMe page with a goal of
$100,000,but the donations quickly surpassed expectations.Over 28,000 people
contributed;with one donor giving 2500.Messages poured in from donors who were
inspired by Spencer's kindness and Beth's story."I love this story. This is everything
that is good in the world.Beth,I hope you get all the upgrades you can and are able to
enjoy them,"one donor wrote.
Spencer recorded the moment he informed Beth about the fundraising efforts. Her
reaction was pure and emotional,as she tearfully asked,"Why?"Spencer replied,"They
kind of fell in love with you and your story. We just wanted to come together as a
community to help you out and get you to a better spot."Beth's story is a reminder of the

Virtue,by definition,is the moral excellence of a person.Morally excellent people
have a character made up of virtues valued as good. They are honest, respectful,
generous,forgiving and kind,for example.They do the right thing,and don't bend to
urges (or desires, but act according to values and principles. Some might say good
qualities are inborn.Actually, virtues need to be cultivated ()With the habit of
being virtuous,we can take control of our lives and move them in the direction of greater
happiness and fulfillment.
Virtues are universal and recognized by all cultures as basic qualities of well-being.
However, practicing virtues is not easy.So often we know that it takes perseverance
to reach our goals, and we still never get there. We know that if we forgive,
we'll be less angry. We know it takes courage to achieve great things. So why then,if we
know what to do,are we still stuck?
We have not yet consciously applied a virtue to a given situation so as to change its
outcome such as in these examples:kindness towards someone who is having a bad day
can make him or her smile and build rapport;trust in a relationship creates valuable,
meaningful relationships;gratitude for a job loss can shift our focus from feeling low to
how we can have a more fulfilling career;service to others can change lives, and create
stronger nations.
We know we are becoming more virtuous people, not only because of the results
above but also because of the way other people respond to us.Our friends,families,co-
workers, and neighbors will trust and rely on us.They will come to us for guidance and
help. They will want to be around us because we inspire them to be better people.
Practicing virtues allows us to develop our potential ()and live a more purposeful,
better life.
5.What can we know about virtuous people from the first paragraph?
A.They have a habit of doing good.
B.They act on the principle of profit.
C.They always prioritize personal happiness over moral principles.
D.They are born with goodness and do not need self-improvement.
6.What does the underlined word "rapport"mean in the third paragraph?
