When thinking about tai chi, many see it as more of a spectator sport than an
activity that can truly enhance physical strength. However,a recent study has showed tai chi's
remarkable benefits. It's better than more energetic aerobic (exercises for lowering
blood pressure in people with prehypertension(高血压前期),according to a study published in
the journal JAMA Network Open in February.
Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, carries significant health risks.
Prehypertension,on the other hand, indicates blood pressure levels higher than normal but not
yet at the hypertension threshold().For people dealing with prehypertension, tai chi
may be a better alternative to medication. In the study, guided by scholars from the Chinese
Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences'Guang'anmen Hospital in Beijing,342 participants
with prehypertension were randomly divided into 2 groups with the same number, assigned to
engage in either tai chi or aerobic exercise for one hour, four times per week.Half of them
followed the standardized 24-movement practice routine of Yang-style tai chi, while the
remaining half pursued aerobic activities like stair climbing, jogging, and cycling.
A year later, those in the tai chi group showed a significantly greater drop in blood
pressure than those who did aerobic exercises. Moreover, nearly 22 percent of people in the tai
chi group saw their readings fall within the normal range, compared with less than 16 percent
of those in the aerobic exercise group.
Tai chi has long been a popular activity among the elderly because it brings calming
4
effects and can be practiced almost anywhere-in parks,at home,or in even smaller spaces.
Medical experts have also recommended the exercise for people recovering from
cardiovascular(心血管的)or respiratory(呼吸的)illnesses.
Baduanjin, another popular Chinese traditional exercise,is also beneficial for comtruHing
one's blood pressure,according to a 2022 study.Both are low-impact,relaxing the body and
mind.Compared with tai chi,Baduanjin is less demanding on the core and leg muscles and can
help people become more flexible.
28.What does the recent study reveal about tai chi?
A It can make prehypertension less severe.
B.It's less effective than aerobic exercises.
C.It can help relieve tension and stress.
D.It can efficiently cure hypertension.
29.How many participants were appointed to do aerobic exercises in the study?
A.22
B.24
.2171
D.342
30.What makes tai chi well-liked by the elderly?
A Relaxing effect and convenience of practice.
B.Cultural heritage and significance.
C.Intense training and muscle building
D.Rapid results and reading improvement.
31.What do Baduanjin and tai chi share in common according to the passage?
A.They require wonderful flexibility.
B They build core and leg muscles.
C They have similar health benefits.
D.They need limited practice spaces.

The increasing conflicts between humans and Tibetan brown bears on the Tibetan Plateau
are a growing concern, potentially fueled by olimate chuuge impacting the animals'traditional
living spaces. This interruption leads to bears seeking food and shelter in human settlements,
resulting in livestock loss, property damage, and even posing risks of serious injury or death to
both humans and animals.
To ease these conflicts,a team at Wuhan University in China, led by Peng Yuchen, has
developed an innovative AI-controlled device. This system aims to identify bears using
complex image reccgnition and turn them away with a targeted spray of a harmless but
unpleasant mixture of capsaicin(辣椒素)and menthol(薄荷醇).
The AI model was trained on a vast dataset of over 1,000 images of local wildlife,
including over 600 featuring bears,alongside yaks,antelopes,and even humans.Engineered to
distinguish bears from other species, the device consists of a camera,a small computer running
the AI model,a solar panel for power, and a lithium (battery capable of operating
autonomously for up to 30 days. The spray, when activated, can reach bears up to 13 meters
away.
According to the test findings, the machine can identify a bear 91.4%of the time it
registered one,and detect a bear 93.6%of the time one was present. However, there was a
minimal(1.8%)risk of accidental spraying of humans within range.
Some experts note that the field tests were conducted in controlled environments, raising
5
questions about real-world applicability."Bears are highly adaptive,and I doubt a single
spray will deter them long-term,"says Dave Garshelis, who runs a group focused on bears at
the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources."They'll probably
find other ways to access human settlements and just avoid the machine itself."He adds.
He says that the project reminds him of US park rangers shooting bears with rubber bullets
to keep them away from people, which worked up to a point."The bears learned to stay away
from people in uniforms carrying guns, but recognized that there was no danger of other
people,"says Garshelis.
32.What caused the rise in human-bear tension on the Tibetan Plateau based on the passage?
A Decreased food supply for humans.
,Increased human tourism in bear territory.
Bear numbers exceeding the land's capacity.
D.Shifting weather patterns affecting bear habitats.
33.Vhat can be inferred about the device in paragraph 4?
A ft works reliably in most cases.
B.It requires constant human supervision.
C.It puts human safety ahead of accuracy.
D.It performs better in controlled environments.
34.What is Dave Garshelis's attitude iowards the Al-controlled device?
A Hopeful.
B.Skeptical.
C.Indifferent.
D.Hesitant.
33 What's the best title for the passage?
A.AI System Uses Spray to Keep Bears Away
B.Saving Tibetan Bears with a Vast Database
C.Balancing Tech Tradition:Saving the Bears
D.Low-Cost Tech Removes Human-Bear Conflicts
