The eyes of an artist are special. They can see things others can’t notice and create beautiful art forms from their imagination. In the case of 27-year-old Emily Shifflet, she creates her art literally using only her eyes, as she lives with Rett syndrome, a rare genetic and developmental disorder that limits speech and movement.
“Although Emily lives with a condition that has silenced her, she is still able to communicate and express herself through art, and she is an example that people living with Rett syndrome can have lives filled with purpose and creativity,” said Emily’s mother, Jenny Shifflet. Emily creates her art using a special digital software operated by her eyes called Tobii Dynavox. She was able to learn and practice her painting by using the digital painter software on her communication device.
Meghan Winslow, owner of a family art studio, said, “I love the diversity of the different designs based upon the different painting tools that she can select. It’s an amazing mix of science, technology and art.”
Emily has always been exposed to music and art. Tobii Dynavox has really helped her communicate how she was feeling. The painting tool was truly a game-changer. “Emily could finally use the only muscle she has to be creative,” Jenny said. Jenny noticed the art Emily was creating a few years ago and thought they could make nice gifts. She now sells her one-of-a-kind artwork through her website, Eye Gaze Designs by Emily. “Her artwork is a gift,” Jenny said. “It is showing people that individuals with different abilities can be creative and successful in different ways. That’s what we want to show.”
Emily’s artwork has also appeared in Hershey Medical Center and The Art of Pennsylvania. She also serves as a guest artist at SPLAT-A Family Art Studio in Annville and Hershey, Pennsylvania. She simply continues to shine.
4. What’s special about Emily Shifflet?
A. She is able to paint with her eyes. B. She has trained many artistic talents.
C. She is good at developing digital software. D. She can see herself reflected in artists eyes.
5. What do we know about Tobii Dynavox?
A. It can assist in artistic creation. B. It’s a digital product of a painter.
C. It can perform an eye operation. D. It’s a treatment for Rett syndrome.
6. Why does Jenny sell her daughter’s artwork online?
A. To make it gifts for people in need. B. To raise money for people with disabilities.
C. To inspire people to seek their own success. D. To invite people to take up art creation in life.
7. What does the text indicate?
A. Art originates from life but is higher than life.
B. Technology has made our life worth living.
C. The early bird catches the worm.
D. Technology breaks down barriers.

Introduction to Astronomy is a college class usually filled with excitement and a lot of questions about outer space, like: What are black holes? Are there planets out there that are habitable? Why is Venus’s climate so different from Earth’s even though the planets started out so similar?
It’s perhaps because of this that the course lends itself to discussing the realities of climate change here on Earth.
Rector is one of the founders of Astronomers for Planet Earth, an organization of over 2,000 educators teaching people about climate change through astronomy. This combination makes sense to fellow astronomer Juan Madrid, who has taken one of Rector’s workshops aimed at educators.
“As astronomers, we are painfully aware that we have no Planet B,” Madrid says, “and that our planet is the only planet, the only body in the solar system that can sustain our species.” Madrid is a professor at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. He says when the topic of climate change came up in his class, silence would consume the room. Then, he began connecting astronomy concepts to climate change. Like how visible light gets trapped in your car and heats it up on a hot summer day. That is how greenhouse gases act: Gases like carbon dioxide, water vapor and methane (甲烷) trap heat in Earth’s atmosphere by radiating the heat back to Earth’s surface, warming it like a planet-sized car.
But the lessons in Rector and Madrid’s classrooms don’t stop at the stark (严酷的) realities of climate change. They also empower students, discussing the power they have to change the path we are on. “I think that’s a very important role that we can serve in helping people transition from just fear and shame to action and optimism,” says Rector.
And that sense of empowerment and optimism has, in turn, inspired Madrid. “I do have hope about all this,” he says. “But I can only have hope when I know that my students and the future generations are well-trained and understand well our challenges ahead.”
8. Why is climate change discussed in the course Introduction to Astronomy?
A. Because students will be tested on climate change.
B. Because Venus and Earth are quite similar at the beginning.
C. Because questions about climate change will naturally come up.
D. Because astronomy has to be combined with climate to teach the course effectively.
9. Why did Madrid give the example of a car in his class?
A. To show how hot it is in a car.
B. To explain how the Earth is warmed.
C. To show how polluted the air is.
D. To explain how we can adapt to the weather.
10. What should be done to deal with climate change according to Madrid?
A. Helping people to be powerful.
B. Asking people to stay optimistic.
C. Telling people about the hard reality.
D. Making people informed and prepared.
11. Astronomers for Planet Earth was founded for ________.
A. the future of mankind B. the achievement of careers
C. the profit of enterprises D. the development of science
D
Online marketplaces for goods and services are increasingly valuable and powerful. When it comes to their reputation systems, they typically take the form of five-star ratings. While the systems are good enough at identifying and weeding out very low-quality products or suppliers, they do a poor job of separating good from great products or suppliers.
This may not be a big issue for marketplaces offering basic, mass-market products and services (e. g. Uber or Didi), but it can be a serious problem for marketplaces where it is important to allow truly great providers to differentiate themselves clearly.
In their current application, five-star rating systems suffer from several shortcomings. Lacking motivations for providing truthful feedback, users who have extreme experiences (either very bad or very good) are much more likely to leave feedback than users who have average experiences, thus creating selection biases (偏见). Ratings are also likely to experience “grade” inflation (贬值), so that in some marketplaces having a 4.8-star average, or 96% positive feedback, does not mean that the supplier is particularly exceptional. And on some marketplaces, the difference between 4.5 stars and 4.8 stars could be massive, making it hard for users to differentiate OK suppliers from very good ones.
Several options are available to offer users a more precise sense of suppliers’ relative ranking. A basic thing they could do would be to show users the average score for all suppliers in the relevant category. By seeing the whole distribution and where the supplier fits in it, the user could quickly get a sense of the overall situation. The second key measure advocated is to adjust user ratings for differences in reviewing behavior. Specifically, a given user’s review could be given a larger weight if there is a higher variance in the individual’s reviewer scores (in contrast to someone who always gives the same or similar score).
Although rating systems alone can’t guarantee trust and safety in online marketplaces, applying these measures can make rating systems more reliable and reduce the need for additional services.
12. What role can five-star rating systems play in online marketplaces?
A. They can make online platforms look more reliable.
B. They can make excellent providers stand out easily.
C. They can ensure consumers always get the best quality.
D. They can help tell extremely poor products from others.
13. What can be inferred from a hotel’s 4.8-star rating on an online travel site?
A. Most guests had great stays. B. It offers incomparable service.
C. The rating may be misleading. D. It’s far better than 4-star hotels.
14. What helps users better understand suppliers’ relative ranking?
A. Presenting the exceptional scores of all suppliers.
B. Displaying the total number of reviews for each supplier.
C. Highlighting reviews from the same user with distinct scores.
D. Evaluating reviews from various users with consistent scores.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To contrast rating methods for suppliers. B. To expose the problems of rating systems.
C. To present the advantages of rating systems. D. To suggest improvements for rating systems.

One sunny morning, the sky was a brilliant expanse of blue, dotted with a few fluffy white clouds. Little Tim, his eyes shining with anticipation and joy, skipped merrily to the park with his father. Clutched tightly in his small hands was a brand-new kite — a real work of art. The kite’s frame was made of lightweight bamboo and its surface was painted with vivid colors of red, yellow and blue that seemed to dance in the sunlight. A long, flowing tail made of delicate ribbons drifted gently in the soft breeze. “What a fine-looking kite!” Tim exclaimed as he took a closer look, bubbling with excitement about the upcoming kite-flying adventure.
When they reached a wide-open space in the park, Tim could barely contain his eagerness to unfurl (展开) the kite string. His father took the kite, his large hands gripping it firmly, positioning it perfectly to catch the wind. “Alright, Tim, run!” he called out, his voice spirited and encouraging. With a deep breath, Tim began to sprint across the field, his small feet pounding rhythmically on the grassy ground, each step kicking up tiny blades of grass.
Slowly but surely, the kite caught the wind and began to rise, much like a hesitant bird taking its first flight. “Great job, Tim! Keep going! You’ve got it now!” Father’s proud voice carried across the open space, filling Tim with confidence.
Tim’s face flushed with exhilaration as he ran, his laughter mingling with the sounds of nature around him. His gaze was fixed on the kite as it soared higher into the sky, the string slipping smoothly through his fingers. Lost in the magical moment, his senses dulled to everything else; all that mattered was the connection between him and the kite.

第二节 (满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】 Unluckily, a small, sharp branch was sticking out from a nearby tree. However, in his overexcitement, Tim totally failed to notice it. With a sudden, sickening pull, the string got caught on the branch. Without thinking, Tim hurriedly pulled hard on the string, only to have the tail tangled in the tree. The kite, which had been flying so gracefully, was violently yanked back, its frame buckling under the strain. There was a tearing sound that seemed to cut through the air, and the kite came diving down, crashing onto the ground in a mess. He stood there motionless for a second, and then rushed to the broken kite. (97 words)
As Tim desperately tried to piece together the torn kite, a comforting hand patted his back.
