The Dragon-Head-Raising Festival
The Dragon-Head-Raising Festival, called “Longtaitou” in Chinese, happens on the second day of the second month in China's traditional calendar. This year, it was on March 1. It marks the beginning of spring and farming season.
Long ago, people believed that after this day, there would be more rain because the Dragon King, who brings rain, woke up from his winter rest. A popular saying is, “On the second day of the second month, the dragon lifts his head.”
Some old customs are still followed today. One famous tradition is getting a haircut. People think cutting hair on this day removes bad luck. Others say cutting hair in the first month of the year brings bad luck. There's even an old story: “If you cut your hair in the first month, your uncle might die.” Though few believe this now, many still wait until Longtaitou to visit barbershops after avoiding haircuts for a month.
Food is also important. In Fujian Province, people eat tofu and vegetable balls for good luck. In Shandong, fried beans are popular. In Suzhou, people eat “chengyao” cakes made with sticky rice, believing it stops back pain all year.
Many foods are named after dragon parts to celebrate the day:
Noodles = dragon's beard
Dumplings = dragon's ears
Spring rolls = dragon's scales(龙鳞)
Popcorn = dragon's seeds
