When you enjoy the benefits it brings, do you know where it comes from? The Indus Valley Civilization(印度河流域文明) is believed to have harvested(收割) cotton for the first time, but China is now the world's second-largest cotton producer. Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the northwest of China is home to the nation's largest cotton-producing area. In early September every year, the white hair that grows inside the cotton boll(棉桃) stretches(伸展) out for more sunlight, as if telling farmers it's ready to be picked. Harvesting lasts around 50 days, normally from early September to late October. China produces about 22% of the world's cotton, of which 87.3% comes from Xinjiang. The planting of cotton in Xinjiang dates back to the late Western Han Dynasty. According to historical records, the cotton introduced from West Asia to Xinjiang was the Levant cotton. Cotton soon spread in Xinjiang because of the area's sunlight and rainfall, which the plant needs. Xinjiang is famous for its long-staple cotton(长绒棉), which is popular among customers. In the past, people mainly picked the cotton by hand, but now machines have gradually replaced it. In Xinjiang, nearly 70% of cotton is harvested by machines. The use of machines prevents the cotton from being polluted and improves its quality. As you walk through the quicksand or rush down a sand mountain, you can hear loud noises from your feet. So it is named “The Singing Sands Mountain”. Between the tall sand, there is a spring, which looks like a crescent moon(新月). The ancient Silk Road once passed by it. It has been there for thousands of years and has never dried up.
