Dear Peter,
I am so sorry for not being able to see you off at the airport yesterday.I hope your
journey back to London went well.My cousin, who lives in another city, came to see me
yesterday. This was the first time that he had been here,so I had to pick him up at the train
station which is so far away from the airport. Therefore,I didn't have time to make it to the
airport.I would have been there if I could.Once again, please accept my apology.
When do you plan to visit China again?I really look forward to meeting you
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节读后续写(满分25分)
Suddenly,he found a man looking like a lawyer,wearing black leather gloves.George
came up immediately and asked if they were his,but there came a disappointing answer. On
second thought,he realized nobody would be so foolish as to wear them right inside the store.
He had no alternative but to ask the cashier to keep them in case the lost gloves were found.
Then he dragged his legs towards the exit.
During the whole holiday,he was always thinking whether to buy a new pair. After all,
in deep winter,he could not do anything without gloves. Finally poor George decided to buy
another pair of leather gloves. With the last ray of hope,he stepped into the store again. No
sooner had he opened the door than the cashier told him there was indeed one such pair as he
lost. After examining them carefully,he was wild with joy.

Many people have long dreamed of being able to fly around as simply as riding a bicycle.Yet
(外研社)高二英语(一)第3页(共8页)
the safety and strength of a flying bike was always a big problem.
Over the past 10 years, developments in technology have moved the dream of personal flying
vehicles closer to reality. Now,two groups of inventors say such vehicles may be available very
soon.
Grant Stapleton from alloy Aeronautics says the Hoverbike, which is able to get in and out of
small spaces very quickly, will be a truly personal flying vehicle."It can be moved across continents
very quickly because it can be folded and packed,"he adds.
Mr Stapleton says safety was the company's main concern when developing the Hoverbike. He
says the designers solved the safety issue by using overlapping rotor's(折叠旋翼)to power the
vehicle.
The company is testing both a one-third size model and a full-size prototype()of the
Hoverbike.
Inventors say their Hoverbike will most likely be used first by the police and emergency rescue
teams.
In New Zealand, the Martin Aircraft Company is also testing a full-size prototype of its
personal flying bike, called Jetpack. It can fly for more than 30 minutes,up to 1,000 meters high
and reach a speed of 74 kilometers per hour.
Peter Coker is the CEO of Martin Aircraft Company. He said Jetpack "is built around safety
from the start'.In his words,Reliability is the most important part of it.We have safety built into
the actual structure itself, very similar to a Formula One racing car."
Jetpack uses a gasoline-powered engine that produces two powerful jet streams.Mr Coker says
it also has a parachute()that can be used should there be an emergency.
"It opens at a very low altitude and actually saves both the aircraft and the pilot in an
emergency,"he adds.

D.People who serve public purposes.

A.Speed.

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly,
believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity.Others say that competition is bad,
that it sets one person against another;that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they
performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death
affairs. In their single-minded pursuit()of success, the development of many other human
qualities is sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude.
In a culture which only values the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they
strongly blame competition.Among those who are against competition are young people who have
suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society.Teaching these young people,I
often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve
(外研社)高二英语(一)第4页(共8页)
success.By not trying, they always have an excuse,"I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I
really didn't try."What is not usually admitted by them is the belief that if they had really tried and
lost,that would mean a lot.
Such a loss would be a measure of their worth.Clearly, this belief is the same as that of true
competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one's
self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being
valued.Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to disappear can we discover a new
meaning in competition.
28.What is the best title of this passage?
A.Competition!Why Friends Turn into Enemies
B.Competition!What Self-respect Depends on
C.New Meaning Found in Competition
D.Opinions about Competition
29.Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?
A.It pushes society forward.
B.It builds up a sense of duty.
C.It improves personal abilities.
D.It encourages individual efforts.
30.The true competitors and those with a desire to fail both believe

Cutting trees in half can help scientists understand the past and now it appears it can be used to
predict the future.Researchers have been looking at ring growth from trees to make sense of past
weather patterns such as droughts and rain.Combining data from the rings allowed them to create a
copy of pictures of climate changes over the past 2,000 years and this information could also be
used to foresee future famine(),unrest and conflict. The project has been named Old World
Drought Atlas,or OWDA.
Its main author,Columbia biologist Edward Cook, has already carried out similar projects
using trees to create chronological(按顺序排列的)maps of drought in Asia and North America..He
believes that combining the three atlases()could throw light on the global causes of drought
and climate change.
The study, for instance, gave special attention to the importance of one of such causes, the
North Atlantic Oscillation(),in affecting climate patterns in Europe, and specifically in making
Europe wetter north of the Alps and drier south of them.
The OWDA also helped analyze historical events from a climatic perspective().For
instance, the 1740-1741 famine in Ireland had so far been explained by an unusually cold winter
and spring, but the atlas shows that unusually low rainfall over the spring and summer of 1741
could also have played a role. Finally this made growing food nearly impossible and caused a
continent-wide famine.A better grasp of these processes could even make it possible to predict
future famine,unrest and conflict.
Cook said, the Old World Drought Atlas fills a major geographic gap in the data that's

important to determine patterns of climate changes in time. That's important for understanding
causes of many droughts, and it's important for climate scientists to test hypotheses()of
climate forcing and change.

36 But still there is a danger that grows every year.Airliners get larger. Some airplanes
can hold over 300 passengers. And the air itself becomes more and more crowded. If one giant
airliner crashed into another in mid-air,600 lives could be lost.
37 Air traffic controllers tell the pilots exactly when to turn, when to climb, and when to
come down. The air traffic controllers around a busy airport like London Heathrow may handle
25,000 planes a day.Not all of them actually land at the airport Any plane that flies near the airport
comes under the orders of the controllers there.38
Recently such a disaster almost happened.39 One,with 69 passengers,had come from
Toronto,and the other,with 176 passengers,from Chicago.An air traffic controller noticed on his
radar screen that the two planes were too close to each other. He ordered one to turn to the right and
to climb. But he made a mistake. He ordered the wrong plane to do this.Fifteen seconds later it flew
directly in front of the second plane. They avoided each other by the smallest part of a second. The
distance between them was less than that of a large swimming pool.40

On that day,seventy-three-year-old George selected his food carefully.Skim milk was 2.99
white bread,89 cents with a 10-cent discount.Leaving the cashier,he calculated that he had saved
80 cents today.
At the exit, the wind reminded him of his gloves."Where are they? Not in the coat pockets.
Not in the grocery bag either. He was sure he was wearing them when he entered the store. He
clearly remembered putting them into the pocket of this coat.George made a second thorough
search of all his pockets, again including the grocery bag.Now he was sure they must have been
dropped somewhere inside the store.
Old George bought the black leather gloves ten years ago. They were soft and warm.He had
taken care not to let a drop of water or rain touch his expensive gloves,so they looked like new.
Losing this favourite possession was almost like losing a child to him.
George re-entered the store. He followed the same route he had taken before, starting at the
bread counter,to the milk section, the corner where salt and sugar were placed, then the rest of the
store.Several minutes of anxious searching turned out to be useless. He asked the customers
whether they saw a pair of black leather gloves, but they said no.Then he went over to the cashier
immediately to ask if she had received any lost gloves, but only received the same answer. His heart
grew heavier.
"Society has changed, and people have changed,"he said to himself."Years ago,if somebody
picked up something lost, they would give it back. Now a good action is lost."
Yet he did not give up hope.He started to stare at anybody wearing black gloves to see if they
looked like his.The first two persons he saw did wear gloves, but one pair was women's and the
other pair was not black.
