During the summer, Hu Miaokun, a 19-year-old with congenital (先天的) deafness, received offers from seven universities, after years of efforts.
Born in 2005 in a village in Hubei Province, Hu lost his father at five and later lived with his grandparents after his mother remarried. Buying clothes for special events, hiding the price tickets and returning them to the store the next day has for years been the method of money-saving shoppers. Today people are doing it just for social media.
A survey conducted by the credit card company Barclaycard showed that nearly one in ten UK shoppers admits to buying clothing only to post photos on social media for likes. After the “outfit (装束) of the day (OOTD)” makes it online, they return it to the store. According to Barclaycard, the “try before you buy” policy of online retailers (零售商)— where people pay for clothing they order online after they try it on at home— could be leading to this rising trend (趋势).
But the rise of social media means that everyone, not just superstars, expects to build and maintain a personal brand. Since we’re recording our lives and posting them online for public judgement, getting caught in the same outfits more than once should be avoided. And the cost of all those outfits of the day adds up, which makes returning a popular way.
There are brands that make clothes specially for social media shoppers, like Fashion Nova. “These are clothes made for social media: meant to be worn once, photographed and abandoned,” Allison P. Davis wrote in her report about the brand. Another favourite of the social media age is Rent the Runway, which lets customers rent designer clothing for a fee.
Some, however, are moving in the opposite direction. Groups promoting “work uniforms” have increased greatly in recent years, aiming to free women from “the trouble of clothing decisions”. The concept of the “capsule wardrobe (胶囊衣橱)”, which calls for purchasing a small number of high-quality pieces instead of lots of trendy throwaway clothes, is also making a comeback.
8. What does the survey by Barclaycard suggest?
A. Britons try on clothes before online purchases.
B. Some Britons send outfits back after taking pictures.
C. Some Britons over-order and return clothes.
D. Britons follow the fashion stars closely.
9. What’s Fashion Nova’s special service?
A. Offering customers single-use clothes, B. Creating unique shopping experiences.
C. Renting top designers’ clothes. D. Helping shoppers improve their clothing style.
10. What’s the idea behind the “capsule wardrobe”?
A. Less uniform, and more freedom. B. Less addition, but more enjoyment.
C. More choices, and less trouble. D. Better fewer, but better.
11. Why does the author write the text?
A. To compare different clothing materials. B. To support buying high-quality clothes.
C. To introduce Britain’s new wearing trend. D. To criticize the “try before you buy” policy.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. C

When colds and flu hit, many people automatically turn to over-the-counter (OTC)medicines to push through and treat their symptoms (症状). Although these medicines are easily accessible and widely used, it might come as a surprise to many people to learn that they are not risk-free. A study estimated that every year, 26,735 people went to the emergency room for adverse events related to OTC cold and cough medicines.
When two or more drugs are used together, their interactions can sometimes produce unexpected harmful effects. Physicians are typically knowledgeable about potential drug interactions, so it is very important for patients to ask their healthcare providers which OTC medicines are safe for them to use.
It is important to read the package ingredients of OTC medicines closely to avoid duplication of doses (剂量重复). Cold medicines are typically made up of multiple ingredients. A person who takes a single-ingredient medicine paired with one of these multi-ingredient medicines can receive an unsafe dose of that ingredient.
While everyone could potentially experience harmful effects from cold and flu medicines, some groups — including older adults, children and pregnant women— may be at greater risk. Older people who are using prescribed (处方的) drugs to treat multiple health conditions may have a higher risk of drug interactions because of the higher number of medicines being used at the same time to treat different conditions. The aging body is not as expert at absorbing (吸收), distributing and clearing medicines as younger bodies are. This can put older adults at higher risk for an overdose and drug-to-drug interactions with some medicines.
The Food and Drug Administration and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention do not recommend giving cold medicines to children under age 4. Because of a variety of factors, young children have a higher risk of an accidental overdose that could lead to death.
12. What does the underlined word “adverse” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Popular. B. Negative. C. Important. D. Annoying.
13. What does the author advise patients to do in Paragraph 2?
A. To buy medicines from hospitals. B. To ask for suggestions from doctors.
C. To take drugs as early as possible. D. To read the package ingredients of drugs.
14. What can we infer about older people in Paragraph 4?
A. They can’t deal with aging positively. B. Their desire for health makes them unwise.
C. They are more easily affected by diseases. D. Their body can’t handle medicines easily.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. OTC Medicines May Not Be Safe B. Say No to OTC
C. How to Deal with an OTC Drug Overdose D. Tips on Taking OTC Drugs
【答案】12. B 13. B 14. D 15. A

How to Develop a Stronger Mindset(心态)
Everyone faces difficulties in life, but what separates those who succeed from those who struggle is their mindset. A strong mindset allows people to stay focused, overcome obstacles (障碍), and achieve their goals. It is not something people are born with but something that can be developed. ___16___
Embrace Challenges Instead of Avoiding Them
Many people try to stay in their comfort zones to avoid failure, but this often limits personal growth. Mentally strong individuals face them head-on rather than run away from challenges. ___17___ This not only builds confidence but also provides valuable experience for handling future difficulties.
Manage Your Emotions Effectively
___18___ Mentally strong people don’t let emotions control their actions. Instead, they recognize their feelings and take time to process them before making decisions. They take a moment to step back, and analyze the situation with proper emotions. By developing emotional awareness, individuals can stay calm under pressure and respond to situations wisely.
___19___
Some people believe that intelligence and abilities are fixed, while others see them as things that can be improved with effort. Those with a mindset focused on self-improvement are more likely to push through difficulties. They view failures as learning opportunities rather than setbacks. Over time, this approach leads to greater achievements and personal fulfillment.
Build a Supportive Environment
While mindset is largely personal, the people around us also play a role in shaping our mental strength. ___20___ This is why mentally strong individuals don’t surround themselves with negativity. Instead, they seek out mentors, supportive friends, and inspiring role models who encourage them to grow.
Developing a stronger mindset is a lifelong process, but by practising these strategies consistently, anyone can build greater mental strength and take control of their future.

第二节 (满分25分)
52. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My family collects cans and bottles all day, every year. I started helping when I was 12. I saw my parents covered in sweat, like they’d just been in the rain. Even though their bodies hurt and they had tiring nights, they still smiled while working.
Mum leaves early in the morning to get cans. After 12 hours, she comes back. Then I help her pull a shopping cart six long blocks to the recycling centre in Bushwick. This centre has felt like my second home for years, but I kept it a secret. I usually do this work after school. Only on Mondays, I go early to bring Mum breakfast and things like gloves, tape, and beer boxes. Once, I met my classmate Jake near the centre. I quickly hid behind a big trash can until he left. My heart beat fast — I was scared he’d find out about our family’s work.
I couldn’t let my friends know we lived off other people’s garbage (垃圾). I felt bad for being embarrassed, but I couldn’t help it. Even though I had many friends and liked talking to people, I wasn’t ready to tell anyone this secret.
Later, in the summer before my senior year, many of my classmates — including Jake and me — took a college essay class at Long Island University in Brooklyn. The teacher asked us to write about a hard time, how it changed us, and what we learned. I wrote about how my neighbourhood was changing and how I helped fight it. I only added one short sentence about collecting cans.
After class, my teacher said, “Your story is good, but it doesn’t show how you grew. Why not write about collecting cans?” I trusted him, so I rewrote the essay. Two days later, I found out we had to read our essays out loud. I was so scared Jake and other classmates would hear.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When the teacher called my name, I held the essay so tight that my hands hurt.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A week later, Jake came to my house with a new pair of gloves.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
When the teacher called my name, I held the essay so tight that my hands hurt. My voice shook as I read about Mum’s sore hands, the noisy cart wheels on the street, and hiding from Jake that day. I looked up for a second and saw Jake. He wasn’t laughing — his eyes looked soft. When I finished, the room was quiet. Then Jake stood up. “I saw you that day by the centre,” he said slowly. “I didn’t say anything because I thought you didn’t want anyone to know. My mum used to collect bottles too, to buy me school shoes.” His words made me feel less alone.
A week later, Jake came to my house with a new pair of gloves. “Can I help you and your mum this weekend?” he asked. On Saturday, we walked to the recycling centre together. No hiding, no shame. Soon, two more classmates joined us. Now, our cart is full of cans, but also laughs and help. I learned that our hard times don’t need to be secrets. They can bring us closer to people who understand. This kind of friendship is much stronger than any embarrassment I felt before.

After 12 hours she comes back.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
