The Butterfly Effect
A new art installation aimed at sparking conversation and action about climate change has opened at the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Science, created by local schoolchildren, aged 11 to 16, from Parkside Community College.
Titled “The Butterfly Effect”, the installation is a creative response to workshops the students attended with scientists from the University of Cambridge to learn about climate change and extinction events.
Inspired by learning that butterflies act as an early warning sign to environmental changes, the group worked with artist Hilary Cox Condron to create an exhibition featuring hundreds of handmade butterflies displayed throughout the museum, alongside hand-painted warning signs.
The colorful display of butterflies, made from recycled paper from the school, research labs and museum, is strategically placed to highlight the “Big Five” extinction events.
The handmade cardboard protest signs, including one held by a 13-foot-tall Iguanodon dinosaur skeleton, reflect the voices of the young people. They are meant to alert and inspire museum visitors about the ongoing sixth mass extinction event.
“The Butterfly Effect” is the result of a collaboration between the museum and school that began in November 2023. Students volunteered their time after school each week to learn about different aspects of climate change and channel their knowledge into a creative project.
The workshops included:
✱Collecting climate data and citizen science, led by Alison Giles, Whipple Museum.
✱Fossil evidence and changing climates led by Dr Sally Collins, Sedgwick Museum.
✱Sessions with various university scientists and students.
✱Creative sessions with artist Hilary Cox Condron.
The exhibition is free to visit and open until June 2025.
The Sedgwick Museum is open Monday to Friday 10 am — 5 pm and on Saturdays 10 am — 4 pm.

As a kid, I hated camping. At 10, I endured a two-week camp, tearfully writing letters home daily, marking each salty drop that stained my words as “my tears”.
It’s not that I didn’t like nature in general — I could appreciate the beauty of a glowing sunset or crashing waves on a sandy beach — I just didn’t think my relationship with it could be improved by unnecessarily enduring hardship. Why be uncomfortable when I could be comfortable?
It was not until I had kids that my relationship with nature changed. Young children are natural outdoor enthusiasts, often happily covered in dirt or sand, enjoying nothing more than digging for worms and picking up bugs.
When my brothers suggested my family join theirs on one of the annual canoe trips, I decided to give the outdoors another shot.
On the lake, our canoes moved through blue-black water, stirred by our strokes. Only paddle splashes and children’s laughter filled the air, mingling with pine scents and loon (潜鸟) calls. The kids helped each other lift heavy packs, the same kids who, in their regular city lives, refused to carry their own school knapsacks down the block. I marveled.
Once we reached camp and set up our tents, the kids ran around the forest gathering dry wood. We sat around the campfire, talked and ate our prepared food. The kids sang songs and played hand-slapping games. There was no cell service, so we couldn’t even check the weather. My thoughts were about food and shelter, enjoying this place and these people. Maybe time away from modern comforts was not deprivation, but simplification, I realized.
Family canoe trips to Algonquin Park have become a cherished annual tradition. Thankfully, these children have learned to love time in nature far earlier than I did.

6. What surprised the author about the kids’ behavior on the canoe trip?
A. They became more independent.
B. They refused to help with chores.
C. They complained about their heavy packs.
D. They were less interested in cellphones.
7. What did the author realize during the trip?
A. Time spent away from technology is a loss.
B. Embracing a simpler lifestyle can be enjoyable.
C. Modern comforts are necessary for happiness.
D. Camping is a good way to bond with family.
【答案】4. C 5. D 6. A 7. B

Tiny sticky drops used on crops to trap pests could be a green alternative to chemical pesticides, research has shown.
The insect glue, produced from edible oils, was inspired by plants such as sundews (毛毡苔) that use the strategy to capture their prey. A key advantage of physical pesticides over chemical pesticides is that pests are highly unlikely to evolve resistance, as this would require them to develop much larger and stronger bodies. Meanwhile, bigger beneficial insects, like bees, are not trapped by the drops.
Pests destroy large amounts of food, and chemical pesticide use has risen by 50 percent in the past three decades, as the growing global population demands more food. However, increasing evidence of significant harm to nature and wildlife, and sometimes humans, has led to a rising number of pesticides being banned. Some farmers already use alternatives to chemical pesticides, such as introducing other insects that kill the pests, but the new sticky drops are thought to be the first biodegradable pesticide to be demonstrated.
The drops were tested on the western flower thrip (蓟马), which is known to attack more than 500 species of vegetables, fruits and ornamental crops. More than 60 percent of the thrips were captured within two days of the test, and the drops remained sticky for weeks.
The team is testing to see if scents can be incorporated into the drops to make them even more attractive to the thrips or to attract natural predators of the pests. The sticky drops will biodegrade, but the team is investigating how long this takes. They are also assessing how quickly dust reduces the stickiness of the drops.
Dr Thomas Kodger at Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands who is part of the self-defense project, confirmed the team’s commitment to advancing the sticky pesticide. “We hope it will not have nearly as disastrous side effects on the local environment or on accidental poisonings of humans as chemical pesticides. And the other alternatives are much worse, which may lead to potential starvation due to crop loss or the overuse of chemical pesticides,” he said.
8. Why are physical pesticides considered advantageous over chemical pesticides?
A. They are easier to apply.
B. They reduce pest resistance.
C. They trap more types of insects.
D. They are more effective in killing pests.
9. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The purpose of the research.
B. The experimental design.
C. The research background.
D. The originality of the research.
10. What are researchers currently investigating about the sticky drops?
A. Their impact on crops.
B. The durability of their stickiness.
C. Their appeal to beneficial insects.
D. The effectiveness on different pests.
11. What does Dr Thomas Kodger think of the insect glue?
A. It is an environmentally friendly option.
B. It may cause a decrease in crop production.
C. It ensures the stability of food security.
D. It is preferable to other harmful choices.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. B 11. D

D
Living in a city is a well-known risk factor for developing a mental disorder, while living close to nature is largely beneficial for mental health and the brain. A central brain region, the amygdala (大脑杏仁核) involved in stress processing, has been shown to be less activated during stress in people living in rural areas, compared to those who live in cities, hinting at the potential benefits of nature. “But so far the hen-and-egg problem could not be resolved, namely whether nature actually caused the effects in the brain or whether the particular individuals chose to live in rural or urban regions,” says Sonja Sudimac.
To achieve causal evidence, the researchers from the group examined brain activity in regions involved in stress processing in 63 healthy volunteers before and after a one-hour walk in Grunewald forest or a shopping street with traffic in Berlin. The results revealed that activity in the amygdala decreased after the walk in nature, suggesting that nature precipitates beneficial effects on brain regions related to stress.
“The results support the previously assumed positive relationship between nature and brain health, but this is the first study to prove the causal link. Interestingly, the brain activity after the urban walk in these regions remained stable and showed no increases, which argues against a commonly held view that urban exposure causes additional stress,” explains Simone Kihn, head of the group.
The authors show that nature has a positive impact on brain regions involved in stress processing and that it can already be observed after a one-hour walk. This contributes to the understanding of how our physical living environment affects the brain and mental health. Even a short exposure to nature decreases amygdala activity, suggesting that a walk in nature could serve as a preventive measure against developing mental health problems and reducing the potentially disadvantageous impact of the city on the brain.
In order to investigate beneficial effects of nature in different populations and age groups, the researchers are currently working on a study examining how a one-hour walk in natural versus urban environments impacts stress on mothers and their babies.
12. What does Sonja Sudimac mean when she talks about the hen-and-egg problem?
A. Living in rural areas can influence brain activity.
B. People living in cities are more likely to have mental health problems.
C. The relationship between stress and health does not need to be examined.
D. It is hard to determine the effect of living environment on mental well-being.
13 How did the researchers gather evidence for the study?
A. By citing experts opinions.
B. By studying an existing theory.
C. By interviewing healthy participants.
D. By comparing the amygdala activity of volunteers.
14. What does the underlined word “precipitates” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. avoid B. provoke C. hinder D. suggest
15. What does Simone Kihn’s explanation challenge about urban environments?
A. The idea that cities are naturally stressful.
B. The belief that city living benefits brain health.
C. The claim that rural living reduces brain activity.
D. The idea that a one-hour walk greatly changes brain activity.
【答案】12. D 13. D 14. B 15. A

推理判断题。根据第一段中“But so far the hen-and-egg problem could not be resolved, namely whether nature actually caused the effects in the brain or whether the particular individuals chose to live in rural or urban regions,” says Sonja Sudimac.
根据第二段中“To achieve causal evidence, the researchers from the group examined brain activity in regions involved in stress processing in 63 healthy volunteers before and after a one-hour walk in Grunewald forest or a shopping street with traffic in Berlin.(为了获得因果关系的证据,该小组的研究人员对63名健康志愿者在格鲁内瓦尔德森林或柏林交通繁忙的购物街散步一小时前后,检查了与压力处理有关的大脑区域的活动)”可推知,研究人员是通过比较志愿者的杏仁核活动来为这项研究收集证据的。故选D项。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中的“The results revealed that activity in the amygdala decreased after the walk in nature, suggesting that nature precipitates beneficial effects on brain regions related to stress.(结果显示,在自然中散步后,杏仁核的活动有所减少,这表明自然会precipitates对与压力相关的大脑区域产生有益影响)”可知,precipitates前后文存在因果逻辑,自然散步导致杏仁核活动减少,进而产生有益影响。由此猜测,precipitates意为“促使”,与provoke同义。故选B。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Interestingly, the brain activity after the urban walk in these regions remained stable and showed no increases, which argues against a commonly held view that urban exposure causes additional stress,” explains Simone Kihn, head of the group.(有趣的是,在城市中行走后,这些区域的大脑活动保持稳定,没有增加,这反驳了人们普遍认为的城市暴露会导致额外压力的观点,”该团队的负责人Simone Kihn解释道)”可知,Simone Kihn的解释对城市自然就充满压力这个观点提出了挑战。故选A项。

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料。根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
For seventeen-year-old Sam, “excellence” had been his only identity. He was not only the top student in his grade but also the capable student council president, his parents’ quiet pride, and the teacher’s favorite destined for a prestigious university. His life seemed like a straight, smooth path where he needed only to keep moving forward, accompanied by constant praise and achievements.
However, a sudden and unexpected turn of events changed everything. A serious illness hospitalized him for two full months and, more devastatingly, cost him direct admission to his dream university by causing him to miss the crucial entrance exams. When Sam returned to school, he found himself an outsider. The new curriculum was difficult to follow, and his once-sharp mind now struggled with concepts that had previously come easily. Exams that used to be simple now felt overwhelming. What pained him more was the change in how people looked at him the admiration in their eyes had been replaced with careful sympathy. Even well-meaning comments like “It’s okay, health comes first” felt like rejections of everything he had once been.
He grew increasingly withdrawn, avoiding conversations and social interactions. The fear of failure became so intense that he began skipping school, preferring to face his struggles alone. One weekend afternoon, seeking escape from his mother’s constant worried gaze, wandered aimlessly into the local community center. The place was bustling with activity as staff recruited (招募) volunteers for the upcoming culture festival. The available tasks were simple and ordinary arranging chairs, directing elderly attendees, managing performance props (道具). Watching the volunteers work without pressure or expectations, Sam realized something important: here, nobody knew him as “the top student”. Here, his past achievements and recent failures meant nothing. A sense of relief washed over him, offering temporary freedom from the heavy burden of excellence. Almost without conscious thought, he stepped forward and signed his name on the volunteer form.
注意:1.续写词数应为 150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Sam was assigned to guide and assist the elderly visitors.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As one elderly man left, he grasped Sam’s hand firmly. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Sam was assigned to guide and assist the elderly visitors. At first, he felt a bit nervous, unsure of how to interact with them. However, as he helped an old lady find her seat and explained the schedule to a gentleman with a hearing aid, he noticed their grateful smiles. Their warmth and patience slowly eased his anxiety. For the first time in months, he wasn’t being judged by his grades or achievements. He was just Sam — a helpful young man. This simple role gave him a quiet sense of purpose he hadn’t felt since his illness.
Paragraph 2:
As one elderly man left, he grasped Sam’s hand firmly. “You’re a wonderful boy,” the man said earnestly, his voice warm. “Your kindness means more than you know.” Sam’s eyes stung a little. In that moment, he understood that his worth wasn’t tied to being a “top student”. The heavy weight of failure lifted off his shoulders, and he felt a new sense of purpose. When he went home that night, he smiled at his mother for the first time in weeks, ready to face his struggles head-on, knowing kindness and effort were far more important than perfection.

✱Fossil evidence and changing climates, led by Dr Sally Collins, Sedgwick Museum.

4. Why did the author dislike camping as a child?
A. She had no friends to go camping with.
B. She was afraid of worms and bugs.
C. Camping left her feeling uncomfortable.
D. She hated being away from her family.
5. What made the author begin to reconsider her relationship with nature?
A. An encounter with a nature enthusiast.
B. A longing to make a change.
C. Her brothers’ suggestion to go on a trip.
D. Her children’s love for the outdoors.

注意:1.续写词数应为 150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
