Meng Xiang was crazy about films and music during his childhood. When he started college, he dreamed of making films that could combine (结合) his love for storytelling and interest in music.
His biggest challenge came when he planned to make a film about a tennis player. Since no one would offer him money for a 2-hour film, Meng and his college friends tried to make a shorter one. They bought a second-hand camera and used old things instead of expensive equipment (设备). They even made a shelf on their own to support the camera.
Meng and his friends worked hard, rain or shine. When filming the tennis player, they ran after him in the summer sun. Instead of listening to the doubts, Meng and his team spent weeks writing new songs and making a test video. To film the moving scenes, they fixed a smartphone on a skateboard and pushed it. The actors’ hair was blowing in the wind while they were dancing and singing. The loud voice and laughter of the team filled the air.
Their musical film was well-received and won several awards at a film festival. As Meng said, “Making films isn’t about having the best equipment or famous actors. Long ago, in ancient China, there was a story about the invention of silk. People believed that silk was first invented by Leizu, the wife of the Yellow Emperor. Leizu learned how to make cocoons (蚕茧) into soft and strong cloth. This magical cloth became known as “silk”, and it was so valuable that it was called “China’s Gold”. Following the kings’ orders, the Chinese kept the secret of making silk for centuries.
But then, something amazing happened! During the Han Dynasty, the brave officer Zhang Qian traveled west as far as Central Asia and brought silk there. As years passed by, silk became so important that the trade road from Europe to China got its name—the Silk Road.
The Silk Road became a busy highway for traders who carried things across deserts and mountains. From China, people sold silk and tea. In return, they received treasures such as spices (香料), gold and silver from the West. At the very beginning, it was mainly about trade; then people began to share ideas, technologies and cultures. For example, Chinese inventions like papermaking were spread to the West, while new ideas about math and science came to China.
Most importantly, the Silk Road helped different cultures learn from each other. Art, music and even language were shared along this ancient road. In places like the Dunhuang Grottoes (敦煌石窟) in China, you can see how art pieces combined (融合) Eastern and Western styles into something special. It can not be seen anywhere else.
The story of the Silk Road tells us how people from faraway lands could become friends through trade and shared ideas. Today, we remember the Silk Road as one of the greatest examples of cooperation (合作) and exchange in history. It shows us how important it is to learn about and respect each other’s traditions, and that different cultures can work together to create amazing things.

A medical breakthrough (突破) in China is giving new hope to people with spinal cord injuries (脊髓损伤). Scientists have created a brain-spinal chip (芯片) that allows paralyzed (瘫痪的) patients to move their legs, and even walk again.
The chip, only 1 mm wide, is designed to be fitted into the brain and spinal cord (脊髓). If the natural communication between the brain and muscles (肌肉) is lost, this chip becomes the bridge. When the chips work, they create a direct connection between the brain and muscles.
The results have been amazing. A 34-year-old man, paralyzed after a fall, could move his legs just one day after the operation (手术) on January 8, 2025. Two weeks later, he walked five meters with help. Three other patients had similar operations in February and March, all getting better within weeks. Even though the patients’ nervous systems were damaged (受损), the chips helped them walk again. This marks a big step in China’s progress in medical science, and it brings hope for over 3.7 million people in China.
“This is just the beginning,” Jia, the lead researcher, says. “With the technology, these people may one day leave wheelchairs behind after 3 to 5 years of training.”
Behind this achievement is a long journey of careful research and bold thinking. It took the researchers over 10 years to develop the chip. They tested it on animals first, and then on people. They faced many challenges, yet they never gave up. Step by step, they developed a system to reconnect the mind and body in ways once appearing only in science fiction.
As the chip continues to improve, it lights a new path forward—one built on science, shaped by care, and aimed toward a brighter future.
13. What do we know about the chips mentioned in the passage?
A. They are only as wide as 2 mm. B. They are fitted into the man’s arms.
C. They help the patients walk again. D. They improve the patients’ memory.
14. Which of the following meanings is suitable for the underlined word “bold”?

2. very strong or bright so that you notice them: Stripes are bold, bright, and fun to wear.
3. written or drawn in a very clear way: The print should be bold and easy to read.
4. printed in letters that are darker and thicker than ordinary printed letters: All the headings are in bold type.
(From the dictionary)

If traditional Chinese culture were a gold mine (金矿), then Zhong Yetang would be the miner (矿工). Zhong is now a full-time vlogger (视频博主) with almost 300,000 followers on a social platform (平台). Zhong has a special style because she tries to bring ancient history back to life in a creative way. She is finding a relationship between traditional culture and modern design.
“I don’t want people to see some Chinese ancient culture as boring and far-off,” she said. “We have a duty to make the past serve the present (现在) and it can be cool and fashionable and something we can play with.” She recreates dishes from ancient books, makes short plays that tell ancient people’s life stories and compares Chinese customs with similar Western ones. For example, she played two roles as the ancient beauties Xi Shi and Yang Yuhuan, making them compete in a rap battle (说唱对战) with each other.
In another video, Zhong wears costumes from the 56 ethnic (民族的) groups of China. Half of them were bought, and the other half were self-designed. It took her almost two years to prepare for it.
“I didn’t expect that it would take so long and that I’d face so many challenges,” she said. To make the clothing true to the ethnic groups, Zhong studied a lot of reading materials and got information from local people. But she found that some cultures had been lost.
“I’m impressed (印象深刻) most by the Hezhe ethnic group.
Meng and his friends worked hard rain or shine. When filming the tennis player, they ran after him in the summer sun. If it rained and they couldn’t film outside, they hung bed sheets (床单) on the walls in an empty room to set up a simple studio (摄影棚). This 12-minute film got much attention. The teachers and students at their college liked the music they created.
After that, Meng had another idea: to make a musical film. But musicals weren’t popular in college, and many said it wouldn’t work.
It’s about finding new ways to tell your story. Our team is planning to make a special documentary about the environment. And I can’t wait to write music for it.”

10. What was spread from China to the West according to Paragraph 3?
A. Silk and gold. B. Spices and silver.
C. Tea and papermaking. D. New ideas of science.

②Art and language were shared along the Silk Road.
③Traders from China and the West exchanged things.
④The Chinese were ordered to keep the secret of making silk.
A. ①→④→③→② B. ①→③→④→②
C. ④→①→③→② D. ④→③→②→①

B. The introduction of silk cloth.

1. not afraid of taking risks and making difficult decisions: He had the ability to take bold, imaginative decisions.
2. very strong or bright so that you notice them: Stripes are bold, bright, and fun to wear.

Their clothes were made from fish skin,” Zhong said. “But because of its lack (缺乏) of practical value, fish skin was gradually replaced by silk and cloth. As a result, fewer people now know how to make it.” She tried hard to restore (修复) one of these costumes as authentically (真正地) as possible. After studying in the US for three years, she found that many Americans were curious (好奇的) about Chinese culture.
