Need a ride to the doctor? I’ll be glad to take you. Does your dog need to be walked while you’re on vacation? No problem.
Relatives, colleagues, neighbors, and even casual acquaintances all seemed to have my number. In my opinion, doing good for others could not only benefit those in need but also make me feel good. And I was OK with that until one afternoon when I received a call from an acquaintance of my dad’s.
This man I barely knew phoned to inform me that I was to drive him to a medical appointment the following Tuesday. I checked my calendar. Then I told him as nicely as possible that I couldn’t help him that day because of my tight schedule. His reaction wasn’t very kind.
At that moment, I checked my calendar carefully. I was averaging 14 good deeds a month. I stepped away from the calendar, eyes finally opened, and took a closer look at myself in the mirror. Dark circles shadowed my eyes. I didn’t feel like my usual energetic self. Clearly, it was time for me to change.
I brought my concerns to my friend Lucille. Though she was another busy woman, she still had time to socialize and get a good night’s rest. How did she manage all that? She gave me her secret in one word: limits. She told me not to run every time someone calls. Instead, ask the person some key questions: Is this an emergency? Is someone else available to help you? Is this something that can wait? And, the question I knew I should have been considering all along: Is this something you could do for yourself?
Now I consider those questions before rushing to another’s aid. Thanks to cutting down the favors I do for others, I have more energy and sleep better at night. Though I was fearful cutting back on my kindness would have met with disapproval, those friends and relatives started showing some real appreciation for my help. Now, sometimes, they even help me when I’m in need. And that may be the greatest benefit of all.
24. What initially motivated the author to help others frequently?
A. Her desire to expand her social circle.
B. Her belief that it was a win-win approach.
C. The favor that others had done for her before.
D. The encouragement from relatives and neighbors.
25. What’s the primary turning point for the author?
A. Physical tiredness became unbearable.
B. Her friend directly pointed out her problem.
C. A stranger’s unkind response shocked her.
D. She was too busy to take care of her family.
26. What can we infer about Lucille’s approach to helping others?
A. She always put her own needs ahead of others’ requests.
B. She never helped anyone unless it was an emergency.
C. She turned certain tasks over to others systematically.
D. She practiced selective assistance with boundaries.
27. Which is the best title of the passage?
A. The Day I Stopped Helping Others
B. Learning to Say No: How Boundaries Saved Me
C. A Stranger’s Call That Changed Everything
D. Helping Others Is Always a Good Thing

Drones, once used mainly by the military, are now widespread around the world thanks to one company: DJI. Founded in 2006 in a university dormitory in Shenzhen, China, by Frank Wang, DJI has reshaped the industry and changed how we see the world.
Before DJI’s rise, consumer drones were complex, unstable, and required significant technical knowledge to operate. DJI changed this by creating a unique flight control system that made drones easy to fly. This user-friendly approach, combined with adding high-quality cameras, opened up a world of possibilities. From then on, DJI’s drones have become a hit. Not only Hollywood filmmakers but also common people and professionals could create amazing aerial videos.
The influence of DJI’s technology goes beyond just creating beautiful images. Drones are now vital tools in disaster response. After earthquakes, they can fly over dangerous areas to check the damage and find survivors, keeping rescue teams safer. In agriculture, they help with precision farming, checking crop health from the air and spraying water or pesticides exactly where needed, which helps protect the environment. Ultimately, they are also used in search and rescue, check infrastructure like bridges and power lines, and even deliver medicine to remote villages.
However, the rapid growth of drones has also raised some concerns. People worry that drones might fly too close to their homes and violate their privacy. There are also safety concerns, especially when drones fly near airports and might endanger planes, which have led governments worldwide to rush to create new rules. Despite these challenges, DJI continues to innovate, focusing on making its drones safer and more secure.
From a hobbyist’s gadget to a powerful tool for good, DJI’s story is not just about technological innovation, it’s about how a single company’s vision can create a new industry and provide a new perspective on our world.
28. What made DJI’s drones popular with the public?
A. Their low price and military-grade technology.
B. Their strong structure and long-lasting batteries.
C. Their simple flight control system and well-made cameras.
D. Their special use in professional movie making.
29. The word “precision” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. speed B. accuracy C. freedom D. safety
30. Why governments rush to create new rules?
A. DJI’s innovation is no longer welcomed by the public.
B. Drones have raised concerns about privacy and safety.
C. Drones should be completely banned near the airports.
D. Governments are racing to develop their own drone technologies.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards DJI?
A. Critical and worried. B. Indifferent and neutral.
C. Doubtful and unconvinced. D. Objective and appreciative.
D
Many of us believe that our pets make us healthier and happier. While there is some truth to this, the scientific evidence is more complex than it seems.
Research in the field of human-animal interaction has produced mixed results. For example, some studies show that pet owners are less likely to be depressed, while others show the opposite. Experts suggest this inconsistency may occur because people who already feel lonely or depressed might get a pet for comfort, thus affecting the data.
One clearer benefit of dog ownership is increased physical activity, thanks to daily walks. A famous 1998 study found that pet owners who had suffered heart attacks were more likely to survive the following year. A 2019 analysis even showed a dramatic 24% lower risk of death for dog owners. However, when researchers adjusted for other factors, such as the owners’ pre-existing health and activity levels, this benefit nearly disappeared. “You’re more likely to have a dog if you’re already active.” explains developmental psychologist Megan Mueller, highlighting that correlation does not equal causation.
Consequently, scientists are now looking beyond simple ownership. They are focusing on the quality of the relationship between humans and their pets. “Pets are not a medical intervention; they’re a relationship,” says gerontologist Jessica Bibbo. The level of attachment and emotional support seems to be the true key to health benefits.
Controlled experiments support this. A 2025 study found that dog owners had lower stress hormone levels when their pets were present during stressful tasks. In another study, a group of older adults who were given crickets to care for showed improved mental health compared to a control group. This suggests that the act of caring itself, not just the type of animal, can be powerful. The secret to a healthier life, it seems, lies not merely in owning a pet, but in building a strong, supportive bond with it.
32. What does the research in paragraph 2 mainly show us?
A. Health benefits of pet ownership. B. Various causes for human loneliness.
C. Strong objection to the previous belief. D. Inconsistent results of human-pet studies.
33. How does the writer illustrate pet ownership increases physical activities?
A. By listing examples. B. By presenting findings.
C. By clarifying concepts. D. By giving definitions.
34. What can be inferred from Jessica Bibbo’s statement?
A. The value of pets lies in emotional connection.
B Medical interventions are less effective than pets.
C. Scientists have overestimated the benefits of pets.
D. Pets should not be used in any medical treatment.
35. What’s the main idea of this passage?
A. Human beings need animal companionship. B. Pets serve as the best cure for mental issues.
C. Pet ownership alone guarantees a healthy life. D. Human-pet bond contributes to owners’ well-being.

In a small town in New York, there lived a young girl named Emily who had always dreamed of becoming a writer. Her parents, however, had different plans for her future. They wanted her to study business and take over the family store. Despite their wishes, Emily continued to write stories in her free time, hoping to one day published a book.
On a chilly winter morning, Emily was reading a magazine when she noticed an ad for a writing competition. She decided to give it a shot and submitted a short story without giving it much thought. Time passed, and she had almost forgotten about it until one day she received a notification informing her that she was invited to attend the final round of the writing competition in New York City. Excited and surprised, she realized her love for writing had earned her recognition.
Emily was overjoyed, but her excitement quickly turned to disappointment when her parents refused to support her. They argued that the competition was a distraction from her studies and her future responsibilities. Heartbroken but determined, Emily decided to find a way to attend the competition on her own.
She took on extra jobs after school and saved every penny she could. She also reached out to local businesses, asking for sponsorships. Her persistence paid off when a local bookstore owner, Mr. Thompson, offered to cover half the cost of her trip. With the remaining money she had saved, Emily was able to afford the competition.
In the following weeks, Emily was busy getting ready. She used all her spare time to improve her writing. On late nights, she leaned over her desk, writing down ideas in a notebook and revising sentences to make them clear and full of emotion. During this time, Emily read many books to gain new inspiration and discussed with friends who shared their love for writing, getting lots of useful advice. Every day, she rose early to practice writing and went to bed late after completing her tasks. She was a bit nervous but also thrilled at the thought of the upcoming competition.

W: Yes, there is one other thing. My company employs 357 people. Many of them have worked for Ozawa all their working lives. I want your personal guarantee that they will keep their jobs for at least ten years.
M: Come on, Mrs. Ozawa, you cannot be serious. I need your technical service guys, and some of the sales force. I’m talking 50 people tops. I’ll give them an annual renewable contract. The rest will have to go.
W: Where will you build the printers?
M: Well, we’ll just add another line to our factory in Shanghai. Employees are no big deal. Employees here in Australia are too particular about work. Mrs. Ozawa... ten years? That’s totally unrealistic. I can’t agree with that request.

M: We can walk to the nearby grocery store when we’re done.
W: It is closed these days, so Mom has to drive to the far market. But she drove the car to our grandpa’s house today.
M: It’s simple. Let’s take the bus.
W: Good idea.

A. To learn new skills. B. To get a certificate. C. To improve his skills.
A 19. B 20. C
W: Handing power tools over to young students could result in some disastrous situations. But if those tools are combined with effective supervision and teaching, the students can learn valuable new skills and might even find a new career path. One such program, in Washington, D.C., aims to teach woodworking and finished carpentry skills to teens and young adults. It includes a woodshop, completely housed inside a truck, that acts as a kind of “classroom on wheels”. The Mobile Woodshop program was started by the nonprofit Zenith Community Arts Foundation. Margery Goldberg, Zenith’s director, said the goal of the woodshop is “to get people jobs”. Joe Largess is a teacher at the woodshop. He said much of the class centers on teaching students “soft skills”. These are skills that are desirable in all jobs, such as teamwork, having a strong work ethic, being able to follow instructions and arriving to work on time. Ryan is a student at the mobile woodshop. Before entering the class, he had some experience working with wood and tools. “I wanted to give myself a chance to get better at it. That’s why I started the class,” Ryan said. He added that he saw another benefit to learning woodworking: “You can sell some of this stuff and make money from it.”

B 25. C 26. D 27. B
根据第二段中“In my opinion, doing good for others could not only benefit those in need but also make me feel good.(在我看来,为他人做好事不仅能帮助有需要的人,也能让我感觉良好。)”
根据第三段“This man I barely knew phoned to inform me that I was to drive him to a medical appointment the following Tuesday. I checked my calendar. Then I told him as nicely as possible that I couldn’t help him that day because of my tight schedule. His reaction wasn’t very kind.(这个我几乎不认识的人打电话告诉我,下周二我要开车送他去看医生。我查看了日程表。然后我尽可能委婉地告诉他,由于日程安排很紧,那天我帮不了他。他的反应不太友好。)”可知,作者因无法满足一个几乎不认识的人的请求而遭到不友善的回应,这成为她反思的转折点。故选C。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“She gave me her secret in one word: limits. She told me not to run every time someone calls. Instead, ask the person some key questions: Is this an emergency? Is someone else available to help you? Is this something that can wait? And, the question I knew I should have been considering all along: Is this something you could do for yourself?(她用一个词告诉了我她的秘密:界限。她告诉我,不要每次有人打电话就跑去帮忙。相反,问对方一些关键问题:这是紧急情况吗?还有其他人可以帮你吗?这件事可以等吗?还有一个问题,我知道我应该一直考虑:这是你自己能做的事吗?)”可知,Lucille在帮助他人时是有选择性的,并且会设定界限。故选D。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第五段中“She gave me her secret in one word: limits. She told me not to run every time someone calls. Instead, ask the person some key questions: Is this an emergency? Is someone else available to help you? Is this something that can wait? And, the question I knew I should have been considering all along: Is this something you could do for yourself?(她用一个词告诉了我她的秘密:界限。她告诉我,不要每次有人打电话就跑去帮忙。相反,问对方一些关键问题:这是紧急情况吗?还有其他人可以帮你吗?这件事可以等吗?还有一个问题,我知道我应该一直考虑:这是你自己能做的事吗?)”和最后一段中“Now I consider those questions before rushing to another’s aid. Thanks to cutting down the favors I do for others, I have more energy and sleep better at night.(如今,在不假思索伸出援手之前,我都会先问自己这些问题。多亏了减少了为他人帮忙的次数,我现在精力更充沛了,晚上也睡得更香了。)”可知,作者通过设定界限学会了拒绝,从而重获了生活的平衡,因此“Learning to Say No: How Boundaries Saved Me(学会拒绝:界限如何拯救了我)”是最佳标题。故选B。

C 29. B 30. B 31. D

There are also safety concerns, especially when drones fly near airports and might endanger planes, which have led governments worldwide to rush to create new rules.(人们担心无人机会飞得离他们的家太近,侵犯他们的隐私。
B. Medical interventions are less effective than pets.
D 33. B 34. A 35. D
