Dr. Jane Goodall, a world-renowned ethologist, conservationist, and activist, dedicated her life to fostering a deeper understanding of the natural world.
From earliest childhood, Jane’s mother encouraged her fascination with animals. One of her most beloved companions was a stuffed toy chimpanzee, named Jubilee. In what her mother referred to as “Jane’s first animal research program,” she found Jane in bed with a handful of earthworms, trying to understand how they could possibly move without legs. Young Jane immersed herself in books about wild animals and dreamed of a life alongside African wildlife like Tarzan and Dr. Dolittle.
At the young age of 23, after having spent the past few years as a waitress and secretary, she finally found a way to make her dream a reality. She eagerly accepted a schoolmate’s invitation to the family farm in Kenya in 1957 and later ventured into what was then called the Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Reserve—embarking on a journey that would redefine the relationship between humans and other animals.
Taking an unorthodox approach, she immersed herself in the chimpanzee’s habitat. After months of trying to gain their trust, she was able to experience their complex society as a neighbour, rather than a distant observer. She then further departed from scientific convention by giving them names instead of numbers. She came to understand them not only as a species, but as individuals with personalities, complex minds, emotions, and long-term bonds. One day, in October 1960, she saw the chimpanzee she named David Greybeard use grass stems to fashion tools for fishing insects from their nest. Up until that enlightening moment, mainstream scientists thought humans were the only species to make and use tools, having defined us as “Man the Toolmaker.” Her insights rocked the scientific world.
In 1977, she founded the Jane Goodall Institute, spreading her conservation vision around the world. Recognised as a global icon, Jane was the author of several books that have engaged an international readership and the recipient of numerous honours. Goodall passed away on October 1, 2025, aged 91. Her words, “Every individual has a role to play. Every individual makes a difference,” continue to inspire millions to protect our planet.
4. What does the author intend to show by mentioning the earthworms?
A. Goodall’s early curiosity about animals. B. The hardship of Goodall’s childhood.
C. Goodall’s mother’s teaching methods. D. The types of animals Goodall studied.
5. What does the underlined word “unorthodox” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Traditional. B. Innovative. C. Disrespectful. D. Scientific.
6. Why did Jane Goodall’s discovery about David Greybeard shock the scientific world?
A. It documented the hunting techniques of chimpanzees.
B. It proved chimpanzees could communicate with humans.
C. It challenged a long-held belief about human uniqueness.
D. It revealed the emotional bonds within chimpanzee families.
7 What message does Jane Goodall’s life story convey?
A. Dream big, achieve big. B. Still waters run deep.
C. More haste, less speed. D. Practice makes perfect.

The technology for speech-recognition systems has advanced greatly since its appearance in the1950s. Many voice systems can understand the language when spoken at a normal conversational rate. But even the advanced human-machine interfaces (人机交互) used today are unable to trick the listeners into thinking a computer is a human. Why is this? Simply put, it’s because human beings rely on more than words to convey ideas or interpret messages, such as tones, facial expressions, body movements, and objects in the world around them.
One significant recent achievement in the field of talking computers is virtual personal assistants(VPAs) on mobile phones. If you tell a mobile phone VPA that you want to schedule a lunch with a friend, it can set the appointment in your phone in seconds. The VPA can also hold a basic “conversation” and has earned fame for its elementary sense of humour. Still, the humour is preprogrammed and can be triggered only when human users speak certain key words.
While the potential for “real” communication between a human and a machine may seem exciting, this possibility concerns some people. Some experts worry about people’s attachment to these machines and fear that the art of successful human-to-human conversation will be undeveloped in younger generations. They worry that people won’t be able to display the right emotion or tone in conversations because they haven’t been practising those skills. Others fear that machines will take over functions that were traditionally performed by humans, such as customer service. Another concern often associated with the development of new technology is the invasion of privacy (侵犯隐私). When people use certain speech-recognition applications, they leave behind an audio track of their speech. When you ask a VPA for directions, your speech is sent and saved to a remote server for processing. This digital trail may lead to data mining, or the collection of large quantities of personal data.
For now, however, the continuing evolution of speech-recognition software is worth expecting. Leading companies in the field hope to make human communication with machines as seamless as possible, just like communicating with another human.
8. According to the text, what can a VPA do?
A Entertain users with its original jokes. B. Enable people to regard it as a human.
C. Hold preprogrammed conversations. D. Display the right tones in conversations.
9. Which situation reflects the concerns mentioned in the text?
A. One VPA service was priced higher for protecting users’ privacy.
B. An airline bore high costs for applying VPAs to its online service.
C. An app failed to offer the right direction when given spoken instructions.
D. Some teenagers became more socially awkward due to the addiction to VPAs.
10. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To inform readers of the double-edged quality of a new technology.
B. To inspire readers to explore the future of a new technology.
C. To promote the application of a new technology.
D. To stress the convenience of a new technology.
11. What might be the best title of the text?
A. The worries over VPAs. B. Listening to“a real person”.
C. The world of technology. D. Talking to technology.

A man with Parkinson’s(帕金森)disease has experienced a substantial improvement in his ability to walk after being fitted with a device that electrically stimulates his spinal cord(脊髓). The findings, although based on one person, suggest this could be used to treat movement disorders.
Treatments for Parkinson’s disease include drugs that target parts of the brain which regulates movement, as well as deep-brain stimulation, which changes the electrical signals that cause symptoms. However, many people don’t respond to these treatments, particularly if their condition is advanced, says Courtine.
He and his colleagues wanted to find out whether directly stimulating the spinal cord in a person with severe Parkinson’s disease could help. The team designed the device that specifically targets neurons(神经元)in the spine that are activated when legs walk, which showed promise in non-human primates with Parkinson’s-like symptoms. To test it in a person, the researchers recruited a 62-year-old man called Marc, who has experienced Parkinson’s symptoms for around 30 years. These included pace freezing-sudden and temporary inability to move.
The researchers first had to map the neurons in Marc’s spine. This helped to guide the application of stimulators so they would only target his legs’ neurons. They then placed sensors on Marc’s legs and shoes to monitor the electrical activity of the neurons that activate the muscles in these limbs and his feet. When these sensors detected this electrical activity, they activated the stimulators.
After three months’ training using the stimulators, Marc more or less stopped experiencing pace freezing. Marc says that passing through narrow paths or turning had previously caused pace freezing, which led to him falling five or six times a day. Marc has now been using the stimulator for two years and says he hardly falls any more, allowing him to walk several kilometres at a time.
The stimulation is personalised to Marc. Nevertheless, the team thinks a similar technique could help many people. But there are at least five more years of development before the treatment will reach people outside a trial, says Courtine.
12. Why does Courtine’s team design the device?
A. Conventional treatments help little. B. Patients suffer from deep-brain stimulation.
C. The device is much cheaper. D. The medicine has side-effects.
13. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The procedure of the treatment. B. The effects of the research.
C. The function of stimulators. D. The prediction of researchers.
14. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A. Marc is dissatisfied with the treatment. B. Marc recovers after three-month’s training.
C. The device is specially adjusted for Marc. D. The device has been used widely.
15. What is the limitation of this research?
A. Small sample. B. Low technology. C. High cost. D. Inconvenient operation.

“Growth Mindset” has become a new catchphrase. Having a “Growth Mindset” means believing that you can get better at things through hard work, good strategies and learning from others. People with this mindset try more and achieve more because they focus on learning, not just on being smart. ____16____. Here are three common misunderstandings:
Growth mindset is just about positive thinking. A growth mindset is often confused with positive thinking or optimism. While a positive attitude can be beneficial, a growth mindset is more about embracing challenges, pressing on despite difficulties, and seeing effort as a path to mastery. A growth mindset doesn’t require saying “yes” to every opportunity or over-committing oneself. ____17____ — specifically, those things that are in line with your long-term goals.
Growth mindset is just about being perfect. A growth mindset does not mean aiming for perfection; it’s about the journey of improvement and understanding that mistakes are part of the learning process. Even if we don’t always succeed, we should know that the process produces these things, such as trying new strategies and making new friends. ____18____.
____19____. While persistence (坚持) is a key component of a growth mindset, it’s also important to recognize when a goal is no longer achievable or beneficial. A growth mindset includes the wisdom to adjust goals and change paths when necessary.
Even if we realize these mistakes, it’s still not easy to attain a growth mindset. ____20____. It requires consistent effort and self-reflection over time.
A. Growth mindset is not a quick fix
B. It’s about prioritizing what truly matters
C. Growth mindset is about changing goals
D. Growth mindset means you should never give up

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I closed the car door so hard with my backpack pounding against my back as I walked into the woods. “You don’t get it!” I had screamed at my dad 10 minutes earlier. He found my math test, with a “62”. “Why can’t you just leave me alone?” I shouted.
The path was familiar. I had hiked it a hundred times with my mom before she got sick. Now, the trees that used to feel like a hug pressed in too close, and the rustle of leaves sounded like judgment. Since mom’s chemotherapy started, my focus had been divided. I skipped homework to sit with her, zoned out in class worrying if she’d pull through, and when the test came, I froze. Instead of telling dad the truth, I lied and said I “didn’t study”. He had exploded, calling me lazy.
I kept walking, faster and faster, until the path disappeared into underbrush. Anger turned to panic when I realized I was lost. The sun set below the mountains, painting the sky pink and orange, and a cold wind picked up. I pulled my jacket tight, my throat burning. Mom used to say, “Tough moments are detours, not dead roads.” But right then, it felt like I had hit a wall. I slid down a tree trunk and hugged my knees, tears mixing with the dirt on my cheeks.
That’s when I heard a soft cry. I lifted my head, heart racing, and saw a little golden dog stuck in the thorns. Its paw was bleeding. It froze when it saw me, but as I walked closer, it leaned on my hand. I freed it from the thorns carefully. By the time I finished, the dog was resting beside me, and the panic in my chest settled into something softer — determination.
I had to get us both out.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

As young people in the new era, we should have courage, responsibility and a creative spirit. We dare to face challenges, take on social duties, and keep exploring new things.
To become a good new era youth, first, we must study hard to gain knowledge and skills. Second, we should care about society and take part in voluntary activities. Also, we need to inherit and carry forward traditional Chinese culture while keeping an open mind to learn from the world.
Let’s strive to be the youth who can make contributions to our country!

I pulled out my phone, but there was no signal. I felt panicked, but the little dog leaned on my palm and its warm breath calmed my racing heart. Its trust made me know I couldn’t give up on us. Seizing a tree branch, I recalled Mom’s words and searched for the trail marks we’d noticed before. Guided by the sunset glow, I stepped through the underbrush with the dog bounding behind me. Thorns scratched my arms, but I ignored the hurt and finally overcame fear. Just as my legs weakened, I found distant car headlights shining.
With light cutting through the darkness, a familiar voice called my name. It was Dad, beside his car with his anxious eyes. Spotting us, he rushed over and hugged me tightly. “I’m sorry,” he whispered. “I shouldn’t have called you lazy — I never asked why.” As the dog licked his hand, I told the truth that mom’s chemotherapy really distracted me. Dad stroked the dog’s injured paw, looking at me with pride. “You’re responsible,” he said. My anger melted, and we walked to the car with the dog. I knew no difficulty would break our family if we faced it together.
