Tips for Great Photos
To take great nature and wildlife photos, take some tips from two experts: Pat Leeson and Matt Poole. Leeson’s photos have been adopted by National Geographic magazine and several wildlife books. Poole, visitor services manager at Parker River National WildlifeRefuge in Massachusetts, has taught wildlife photography in West Virginia.
·Aim for feelings. “Any image that expresses a feeling you want to save as a memory is a good photo for you,” says Leeson. “If you can get a photo that brings out the same feeling in others, then you have a classic.”
·Reduce background noise. Look out for a telephone pole growing out of the head of whatever it is you’ re photographing. Find an angle where you can remove things that distract your eye.
·Start early; stay late. “When the sun is low,” — soon after sunrise and just before sunset — “the color of light tends to be a lot warmer,” says Poole. “It’s often called the golden light or magic light.” Midday is not a great time for photos because the overhead sun creates strong shadows.
·Aim to be first. Being first on the scene “increases the familiarity with the place,” says Leeson. There’s a practical benefit, too. “If you’ re shooting insects like butterflies,” says Poole, “you’ll be a whole lot more effective if you start early when it’s still relatively cool and when insects, because they’ re cold-blooded, are still relatively inactive.”
· Steady the camera. “Having a stable camera is everything,” says Poole, “which is why we always suggest that people use tripods (三脚架).” Resting the camera lens on your car’s door frame and shooting from inside your stopped car also works well. Plus, cars scare animals less than humans do.
1. What is Pat Leeson’s advice for taking photos?
A. Aiming to capture a feeling.
B. Capturing as many photos as possible.
C. Using advanced equipment for clearer images.
D. Focusing on technical aspects of photography.
2. Why is it better to take photos early or late in the day?
A. It is easier to find wildlife. B. The weather is typically clearer.
C. The light creates better contrast. D. The sun creates warmer light.
3. Why might shooting from inside a car be effective for wildlife photography?
A. The car creates better lighting.
B. The car reduces shadows in the photo.
C. The car allows for more flexibility in movement.
D. The car is less likely to frighten animals compared to human beings.

Art is a timeless form of self-expression — one that tells the story of our shared humanity. It has the power to make us feel, think, and even heal. But what happens to art after life ends? That question had always been lingering in the mind of a woman after she lost her son.
In 2017, Andrea Magder went through an event that changed the course of her life. She lost her 28-year-old son Ethan. “After he passed away, I discovered journals, the beginning of a novel, artwork, and different creative works, ” Andrea said. After attending a grief support group, she met another participant who had also lost his son. “He said, ‘My son left behind18 symphonies that nobody will ever hear — what’s going to happen to them?’” she recalled.
That moment inspired Andrea to do something meaningful — to showcase work that might otherwise never be recognized. She launched The Artist Lives in 2023, a nonprofit online gallery. It showcases the artworks of artists from around the world who have passed away, allowing their legacies (遗产) to continue. The gallery has featured a variety of media, including paintings, poetry, and music.
However, The Artist Lives is more than a gallery. It helps families who have lost loved ones. “They know that their loved ones are still present in a way — they’re honoring them, ”Andrea said. “It’s important for me to get their stories out to tell who these people were. ”Similar to an in-person gallery, the website has a shop where visitors can purchase prints of artworks, with the proceeds shared between the families of the artists and the nonprofit.
The online platform proves that even after death, one’s personal expression can live on. It’s also a proof of the ability to transform grief into purpose and to build something that brings light to others.
4. What is Andrea’s purpose in starting The Artist Lives?
A. To respect her son’s will. B. To reveal unseen art legacies.
C. To answer questions about art. D. To discuss the value of life.
5. What can we know about The Artist Lives?
A. It focuses on selling artworks for profit.
B. It mainly displays artworks by famous artists.
C. It helps sad families honor their lost loved ones.
D. It requires artists to register in person.
6. What does the underlined phrase“the proceeds” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The artworks displayed in the gallery.
B. The permission to sell artists’ works.
C. The families benefiting from the gallery.
D. The money earned from selling the artworks.
7. What message does the text mainly convey?
A. Artistic legacies fade with age.
B. Online galleries are more accessible.
C. Online platforms inspire artistic creation.
D. Art legacies can turn into a positive force.
B 5. C 6. D 7. D

根据第四段“Similar to an in-person gallery, the website has a shop where visitors can purchase prints of artworks, with the proceeds shared between the families of the artists and the nonprofit. (和实体画廊一样,该网站设有商店,访客可以购买艺术作品的复制品, 由艺术家家属和这个非营利组织共享。)”可知,访客购买艺术品复制品会产生资金,这笔资金由双方共享,因此the proceeds指的是销售艺术品所获得的钱。故选D项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“The online platform proves that even after death, one’s personal expression can live on. It’s also a proof of the ability to transform grief into purpose and to build something that brings light to others. (这个线上平台证明,即便离世,一个人的自我表达也能延续下去。它也证明了人们能够将悲痛转化为目标,并创造出能为他人带来光明的东西。)”以及上文内容可知,本文讲述安德里亚痛失爱子后,创办线上画廊展示已逝艺术家作品,缅怀逝者,化悲痛为力量传递温暖,所以主要传达的是艺术遗产可以转化为积极的力量。故选D项。
C
A study has found that verbal abuse or hurtful words in childhood may be as damaging to long-term mental well-being as physical abuse, if not more so. This groundbreaking research highlights the need to treat verbal abuse as a serious public health issue that comes with lasting psychological consequences.
Research led by Liverpool John Moores University has drawn on the data of 20,687 adults from England and Wales. In the survey, participants were asked about their exposure to physical and/or verbal abuse before the age of 18. Then current mental health markers were assessed using a mental well-being scale, which factors in optimism, relaxation, social connection and coping skills. The survey asked participants how often they felt optimistic about the future, useful and relaxed.
What the researchers found was that those who experienced verbal abuse as children were 1.64 times more likely to report poor mental well-being as adults. Meanwhile, individuals exposed to physical abuse were 1.52 times more likely to have mental health problems later in life, and those who experienced both verbal and physical maltreatment were 2.15 times more likely to have negative mental health outcomes.
There’s a growing body of evidence that demonstrates how verbal abuse in childhood has long- term impacts. It’s often viewed as less harmful than other forms of maltreatment. The researchers found that while physical abuse had decreased — from around 20.2% of children born in the 1970s to 10% of those born in 2000 or later — verbal abuse has increased. This study found that those who experienced this in their youth had nearly double the likelihood of social isolation.
There remains an urgent need for greater measures to prevent physical abuse. Verbal abuse may not immediately manifest in ways that catch the attention of bystanders, clinicians, or others in supporting services. The researchers emphasize that this study doesn’t downplay the long- term harm of physical abuse, but it highlights the need to better consider verbal maltreatment when it comes to both child protection policies and mental health treatment in adults who have experienced this trauma.
8. What did the survey in paragraph 2 focus on?
A. Adult abuse experiences.
B. Social connection in childhood.
C. Current physical health markers.
D. Childhood abuse and adult mental health.
9. How does the author present the issue in paragraph 3?
A. By presenting comparative research data. B. By introducing the study’s background.
C. By explaining research methodology. D. By proposing policy solutions.
10. What change in abuse patterns did researchers note?
A. Physical abuse increased since 2000.
B. Verbal abuse decreased significantly.
C. Verbal abuse rose while physical abuse declined.
D. Both types dropped among newer generations.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Physical abuse prevention strategies
B. Verbal abuse’s lasting adult impact
C. Survey methods in psychology research
D. Improving childhood mental health policies
D 9. A 10. C 11. B

根据第二段中“In the survey, participants were asked about their exposure to physical and/or verbal abuse before the age of 18. Then current mental health markers were assessed using a mental well-being scale, which factors in optimism, relaxation, social connection and coping skills.(在调查中,参与者被问及他们在18岁之前是否遭受过身体和/或言语虐待。然后使用心理健康量表评估当前心理健康指标,该量表考虑了乐观、放松、社会联系和应对技能等因素)”可知,第2段的调查关注的是童年期虐待和成年后的心理健康之间的关系。故选D项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“What the researchers found was that those who experienced verbal abuse as children were 1.64 times more likely to report poor mental well-being as adults. Meanwhile, individuals exposed to physical abuse were 1.52 times more likely to have mental health problems later in life, and those who experienced both verbal and physical maltreatment were 2.15 times more likely to have negative mental health outcomes.(研究人员发现,那些在童年时期遭受过言语虐待的人,成年后报告心理健康状况不佳的可能性要高出1.64倍。与此同时,遭受过身体虐待的人在以后的生活中出现心理健康问题的可能性要高出1.52倍,而同时遭受过言语和身体虐待的人出现负面心理健康结果的可能性要高出2.15倍)”可知,作者在本段通过展示对比性的研究数据来呈现问题。故选A项。
根据第四段中“The researchers found that while physical abuse had decreased — from around 20.2% of children born in the 1970s to 10% of those born in 2000 or later — verbal abuse has increased.(研究人员发现,虽然身体虐待有所减少——从20世纪70年代出生的儿童中约20.2%减少到2000年及以后出生的儿童中的10%——但言语虐待有所增加)”可知,研究人员注意到言语虐待增多而身体虐待减少这一虐待模式的变化。
通读全文,文章第一段“A study has found that verbal abuse or hurtful words in childhood may be as damaging to long-term mental well-being as physical abuse, if not more so.

Everybody’s skin wrinkles with age, but the actual science behind why it happens is more complex than you may expect. Experts typically cite factors such as genetics, UV damage, and underlying pathological conditions. However, most evidence for skin wrinkling theories comes from studies that used computational modeling to estimate how the dermal layer (真皮层) changes over time. Very few experiments involve testing theories with actual skin samples. With this in mind, researchers at Binghamton University, State University of NewYork decided to change that.
To gain a better understanding of skin’s properties, Guy German and his colleagues hired a group of volunteers ranging in age between 16 and 91. They then used a low-force device to stretch small tissue samples of their skin to simulate everyday forces applied to the body’s largest organ. The results clearly showed that as skin stretches one way, it also contracts (收缩) in the other direction. These contractions grow larger with age, forming wrinkles in the process.
German compared the dynamics to a popular, flexible children’s toy. “If you stretch SillyPutty, for instance, it stretches horizontally, but it also shrinks in the other direction — it gets thinner. That’s what skin does as well,” he said. “As you get older, that contraction gets bigger. And if your skin is contracted too much, it folds. That’s how wrinkles form.” There is a bit more to it than just Silly Putty. According to German, your skin’s mechanical properties get somewhat “unstable” as you age and “things degrade a bit”.
So people with more physically active careers such as construction workers are likely to have more aged, wrinkled skin than office employees. But German stressed although different careers may lead to different skin conditions, taking proper skin-care measures is crucial for everyone.
While mechanical stress may be the biggest influence on how wrinkles initially develop, protection against major issues like sun damage and hormonal (激素的) imbalances will keep your skin healthy. Even if your skin is smooth, it doesn’t mean it is immune to UV radiation. So be sure to continue applying suncream to yourself. Wrinkled or not, your body will be better off for it.
12. How did most previous studies support skin wrinkling theories?
A. By observing real skin. B. By analysing clinical cases.
C. By conducting patient interviews. D. By using computer models.
13. What did the new experiment reveal?
A. Aging reduces skin strength. B. Skin tends to thicken with age.
C. Skin contracts when stretching. D. Wrinkles expand gradually over time.
14. What did German want to illustrate by mentioning Silly Putty?
A. The fun of playing with children’s toys. B. The principle of wrinkle forming.
C. The skin’s outer appearance. D. The link to child skin care.
15. What does the author emphasize in the last paragraph?
A. Labourers require extra care. B. UV prevention remains essential.
C. Mechanical force stops skin aging. D. Hormones cause most skin wrinkles.
D 13. C 14. B 15. B

For anyone looking for tips on how to improve running technique, it’s important to understand the proper running technique.
____16____
Shoes are the most important gear you’ll need for running. Get fitted at a sports shoe store and if you’re serious about running, you’ll definitely want to invest in high-quality running shoes. You’ll also want proper socks — not those trendy ankle socks that fall down and won’t offer any extra support.
·Always warm up and cool down.
Make sure you warm up before you run. This means performing some dynamic stretches like squats, star jumps, or walking lunges. ____17____ After a run, you’ll want to cool down by doing some static stretches like forward-folds, low lunge stretches and calf stretches.
·Alternate between walking and running.
At the start, it’s going to feel incredibly difficult to run for an extended period of time without being completely puffed. Most beginners won’t be able to run for more than a minute at a time. But don’t let that discourage you. Start by alternating between one minute of walking and one minute of running. Then, you can gradually adjust the intervals to run more than you walk. ____18____
·Avoid dropping your shoulders.
____19____ It not only helps prevent injuries but also conserves energy. Your body is built to balance itself so long as you have good posture (姿势). So, while it’s tempting to look down at your feet while you run, keep your eyes forward and maintain an upright posture.
·Keep arms, hands, neck and shoulders relaxed.
Clenched hands (紧握拳头) can cause tension all the way up through your arms and into your shoulders and neck. ____20____ Drop your arms and shake your hands every 100 metres or so until you get used to staying relaxed during your run.
A. Start with proper equipment.
B. And soon, you’ll be able to run without stopping.
C. Deep and rhythmic breathing will maximize oxygen intake.
D. Running reduces the risk of heart disease and high blood pressure.
E. This will help gently activate the muscles you’ll use during your run.
F. Tension forces the heart to overwork, burning extra energy while running.
G. Correct body positioning plays a crucial role in learning effective running technique.
A 17. E 18. B 19. G 20. F

上文“Make sure you warm up before you run. This means performing some dynamic stretches like squats, star jumps, or walking lunges. (跑步前一定要热身。这意味着要做一些动态伸展运动,比如深蹲、星形跳跃或步进)”解释了热身的概念是进行动态拉伸。E选项“This will help gently activate the muscles you’ll use during your run. (这将有助于温和地激活你在跑步中将用到的肌肉)”顺承上文,解释了进行动态拉伸的目的和作用(激活肌肉),且句中“This”指代上文提到的“performing some dynamic stretches”,上下文逻辑连贯。故选E项。
【18题详解】
上文“Start by alternating between one minute of walking and one minute of running. Then, you can gradually adjust the intervals to run more than you walk. (开始时,交替进行一分钟步行和一分钟跑步。然后,你可以逐渐调整间歇时间,使跑步时间多于步行时间)”描述了从“走跑交替”开始并逐步增加跑步时长的循序渐进过程。B选项“And soon, you’ll be able to run without stopping. (很快,你就能够不间断地跑步了)”承接上文,预测并总结了坚持这一训练方法所能达到的积极结果,即最终实现连续跑步,这对读者是极大的鼓励。故选B项。
【19题详解】
下文“It not only helps prevent injuries but also conserves energy. Your body is built to balance itself so long as you have good posture (姿势). (它不仅有助于预防受伤,还能节省能量。只要你有良好的姿势,你的身体天生就能自我平衡)”阐述了“它”的两个好处:预防伤害和节省能量。G选项“Correct body positioning plays a crucial role in learning effective running technique. (正确的身体姿势在学习有效的跑步技术中起着至关重要的作用)”位于段首,点明了本段的主题:身体姿势的重要性。且下文的“It”正是指代G选项中的“Correct body positioning (正确的身体姿势)”,并且下文的“good posture”也与“Correct body positioning”呼应。故选G项。
上文“Clenched hands (紧握拳头) can cause tension all the way up through your arms and into your shoulders and neck. (紧握拳头会导致紧张感一直延伸到你的手臂,直至肩膀和脖子)”指出了握拳会导致的紧张问题。F选项“Tension forces the heart to overwork, burning extra energy while running. (紧张迫使心脏过度工作,在跑步时燃烧额外的能量)”承接上文,进一步说明了紧张(即上文提到的因握拳等引起的紧张)对身体的负面影响——增加心脏负荷和能量消耗。这解释了为何下文建议要“放松”和“摇晃手臂”。上下文形成了“问题(握拳导致紧张)-后果(紧张导致能量消耗)-解决方案(放松手臂和手)”的逻辑链条。故选F项。

Ben just received his math exam results, and they were not satisfactory. He had failed the test. Ben looked frustrated and a little embarrassed. He had worked hard, but the numbers just didn’t make sense to him. Jack could see how much Ben was struggling.
“Don’t worry, Ben. It’s just an exam, ” Jack said with a comforting smile. “You can still improve. Maybe I can help you understand math problems better. ” Ben looked at Jack, surprised but relieved. He had never thought about asking for help before. Jack had always been patient with him, so he agreed to accept the offer.
For the next few days, Jack and Ben spent time together after school. Jack would explain the solutions to the math problems step by step, and Ben listened carefully. At first, Ben was still confused and made a lot of mistakes, but Jack kept encouraging him, saying, “It’s okay, Ben. We all start somewhere. Keep practicing, and it will get easier. ”

C Using advanced equipment for clearer images.

C Survey methods in psychology research
D. Improving childhood mental health policies

To gain a better understanding of skin’s properties Guy German and his colleagues hired a group of volunteers ranging in age between 16 and 91.
14 What did German want to illustrate by mentioning Silly Putty?

Jack was good at math. His exam grades were always high, and he found solving math problems quite easy. One day, his good friend Ben came to him, looking upset.
Jack used simple examples to help Ben understand better. They went over basic arithmetic, fractions, and even some more advanced problems. With Jack’s help, Ben slowly started to understand the math problems. His confidence grew, and he started to believe that he could do well in math one day.
One month later, Ben took another math test. This time, he felt more prepared. Jack had been a great teacher, and now it was Ben’s turn to show what he had learned. Ben was a bit nervous, but he felt more confident than he had before.
