The annual triathlon (三项全能运动) in Hawaii United States, draws in competitors from all over the globe. Natalie Grabow, an 80-year-old woman, became the oldest woman to finish the Ironman Triathlon.
The grandmother from New Jersey jumped into the waters of Kailua Bay to finish the 2.4-mile swim, rode 112 miles on a highway twisting through lava fields and coastal crosswinds, and then ran the 26.2-mile road course, the length of a marathon, where parts contribute to an elevation gain of over 1, 000 feet. When Grabow passed through the finish line, the first person to greet her was Cherie Gruenfeld, who became the oldest female ever to finish the same race in 2022, at the age of 78.
As the only entrant in the 80 — 84 age group in the championship, Grabow didn’t achieve her goal overnight. It’s part of a 20-year process, where she’s won shorter Ironman 70. 3-mile events, known as a half Ironman.
For most of Grabow’s life, she didn’t know how to swim. In 2005, when she turned 60, she started learning to swim. Later that year, she decided to participate in a sprint triathlon, one of the shortest triathlon distances. But by 2006, she came to Kona with her eyes set on the full-distance Ironman course. “This was her 11th Ironman World Championships in Hawaii,” says her coach.
While Grabow has spoken about how girls and women didn’t have many options for sports when she grew up, she became a dedicated runner during her career as a software engineer, though she often felt discouraged because of injuries. “The cross- training aspect of triathlon appealed to me as this type of training reduced injuries,” Grabow says. “Seeing my running friends take up triathlons motivated me to try it.”
Grabow plans to take some time off ahead of training and races next year. “I’ve already signed up to do two races in 2026,” she says, adding that she’s looking for at least one more race to add to the first half of the year.
4. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The definition of the Ironman Triathlon. B. The cooperation between two competitors.
C. The barriers to competing in extreme sports. D. The completion process of Grabow’s race.
5. What can be known about Grabow’s achievement in the Ironman Triathlon?
A. It didn’t come easy. B. It was just proof of luck.
C. It was a childhood goal. D. It was part of slight efforts.
6. Why did Grabow prefer the training of triathlon?
A. It made her free from any injury. B. It was more suitable for her body.
C. It enabled her to make more friends. D. It secured her an engineering career.
7. What does the author mainly want to show about Grabow?
A. Her influence on other athletes. B. Her hard work and determination.
C. Her learning methods and teamwork. D. Her contribution to promoting sports.

In the tropical forests of Brazil, butterflies are losing their color. Their wings, once a mix of blue, orange, and red, now appear less bright.
Biologist and photographer Roberto Garcia-Roa, who has been documenting tropical insects for years, shared his observations in an interview. “The color of a butterfly’s wings is not just beauty,” he said. “For butterflies, color is a language — it serves to communicate, court and defend. When diverse colors disappear, it means something has been destroyed in the dialogue between species and their environment.”
Behind this change lies a story. Brazil’s forests are being progressively replaced by eucalyptus plantations (桉树种植园) , simplified environments that are warmer and drier than natural forests. In these uniform landscapes, brightly colored butterflies, which need shade, humidity, and plant variety to reproduce, can no longer survive. Only those with brown or gray tones remain, better suited to a world that has become uniform.
The study conducted in the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo counted 31 species in native forests and only 21 in plantations, with a dramatic reduction in color variety. But it’s not just about beauty: color is an indicator of ecological complexity. When the range of colors shrinks, it means the entire ecosystem is simplifying.
Scientists also speak of other phenomena of discoloration (变色): coral reefs turning white, oceans taking on greener tones and even rainbows at risk of being less visible in polluted areas. “Even observed from space, the planet appears less colorful,” emphasized Ricardo Spaniol from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. “It’s a worrying signal of how connected natural processes are and how human pressure is affecting Earth’s vitality.”
Despite the concerning picture, the research leaves room for hope. Scientists have observed that in Amazonian forests regenerated after decades of abandonment, the variety of butterfly colors slowly returns. Eucalyptus plantations — over 54 million acres worldwide — are often perceived as “green”, but behind that uniform color lies a disturbed ecosystem. “Green is not enough to represent nature,” García-Roa explained. “We need diversity and complexity. Only then can the forest shine again.”
8. What does Garcia-Roa stress in paragraph 2?
A. The decline in the number of butterflies. B. The significance of color for butterflies.
C. The diversity of Brazil’s tropical insects. D. The urgency to reshape local environments.
9. What does a eucalyptus plantation mean to brightly colored butterflies?
A. A safe home. B. An artificial shelter.
C. A competition-free forest. D. An uninhabitable environment.
10. What does the word “shrinks” underlined in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Proves complex. B. Slowly emerges.
C. Becomes smaller. D. Totally disappears.
11. How can we help the forest shine again according to the text?
A. By monitoring it from space. B. By introducing more butterflies.
C. By planting more evergreen trees. D. By allowing nature to take its course.

The Inca Empire in South America, one of the most powerful pre-Columbian societies, was known for many innovations. One of them was the society’s method of keeping records known as khipu, which involves knotted cords (结绳) .
The Inca Empire was defeated by the Spanish in 1532, and only a tiny percentage of ancient Incan khipus have survived. It has long been assumed that khipu production was the domain of this civilization’s ruling class, but a new analysis of a cord finds that even low-class commoners may have engaged in this tradition.
Recently the University of St. Andrews in Scotland acquired a khipu and radiocarbon dating indicated that it was from around the year 1498. Its main cord was made of human hair — an unusual feature for Inca-era khipus. Scientists studied elements in the hair to learn about the diet of the person who made it. The results indicated a diet rich in legumes, grains, and tubers. However, there was little evidence of meat or maize beer, which were commonly consumed by Inca’s ruling class.
The researchers knew that historically, including hair could serve as a kind of signature that indicated who had made the khipu. And this meant they had an unusual opportunity to find out more about a historic khipu’s creator. This hair analysis adds another piece of evidence to the growing belief that khipu production might have been more widespread in the Inca Empire than the Spanish assumed and recorded in their accounts.
Manny Medrano, a khipu researcher who was not part of this study, says this study is innovative in the way it analyzed the hair. “While specialists have long noticed human hair in khipus,” he says, “this is the only Inca-era one he knows of that has the primary cord entirely made of human hair.”
“Museums hold hundreds of khipus that have never been studied by specialists. This study is likely to inspire a re-look at them,” Medrano says. “I won’t be surprised if we find other khipus with substantial amounts of human hair in them in the future.”
12. What was the previous assumption on khipu production in the Inca Empire?
A. It primarily involved the ruling class. B. It completely relied on human hair.
C. It became more popular after 1532. D. It was mastered by its commoners.
13. What is key to identifying the maker of the recently studied khipu?
A. Scientists’ unusual eating habits. B. The unique technique of the khipu.
C. The special way to study the main cord. D. Inca’s commoners’ preference for meat.
14. What does Manny Medrano think of the new study of a khipu?
A. Its researchers should improve their methods. B. Its great success is credited to local museums.
C. The way it analyzed the hair is far from creative. D. It may encourage further exploration into khipus.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Recording Methods in Ancient Societies Vary
B. The Process of Making Khipus Is More Complex
C. A Cord of Hair Reveals Something New About Khipus
D. Khipus During the Inca Empire Publicize Knotted Cords

It was the first nice spring weekend of the year, which we had longed for throughout the long, cold winter. The sun was warm, the wind felt gentle, and the world seemed to be bursting with new life. Yet, my husband still lay in bed, suffering from severe stomach pain accompanied by a terrible headache.
He didn’t get any sleep the night before, so he was trying to fall asleep on such a sunny day. I had to draw the curtains to give him some darkness and peace.
Just as predictably, a group of neighborhood children seized the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful weather. They were running back and forth along the sidewalk right in front of our windows, their joyful shouts and pounding footsteps echoing (回响) through the house with painful clarity. Each burst of laughter seemed to intensify my husband’s headache. I watched them for some time from the windows, torn between sympathy for my suffering husband and unwillingness to ruin the children’s springtime fun.
After hesitating for nearly twenty minutes, I finally gathered my courage and stepped outside. “Excuse me,” I called out softly to the kids. The children stopped their game and turned to me. “I’m so sorry to bother you,” I began nervously, “but my husband is very sick in bed with a terrible headache. Would it be too much trouble...”
Before I could finish, a little girl with pigtails (辫子) asked, “Is it because we’re being too loud?”
I nodded apologetically and explained that he needed some sleep in the daytime. “I hate to ask, but would you please play on the other side of the building just for today?” I asked, expecting the children to argue with me.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

The annual triathlon (三项全能运动) in Hawaii, United States, draws in competitors from all over the globe.

【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. D

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了巴西热带森林蝴蝶褪色的现象、成因、影响以及生态恢复的可能性,体现人类活动对生态的影响。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的““The color of a butterfly’s wings is not just beauty,” he said. “For butterflies, color is a language — it serves to communicate, court and defend. When diverse colors disappear, it means something has been destroyed in the dialogue between species and their environment.”(“蝴蝶翅膀的色彩不只是为了美观,”他说,“对蝴蝶而言,色彩是一种语言——它用来交流、求偶和防御。当多样的色彩消失时,就意味着物种与环境之间的对话,已经有部分被破坏了。”)”可推知,加西亚-罗亚强调的是颜色对蝴蝶的重要意义。故选B项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Brazil’s forests are being progressively replaced by eucalyptus plantations (桉树种植园), simplified environments that are warmer and drier than natural forests. In these uniform landscapes, brightly colored butterflies, which need shade, humidity, and plant variety to reproduce, can no longer survive.(巴西的森林正逐渐被桉树种植园取代,这种单一化的环境比天然森林更温暖干燥。在这种同质化的环境中,需要遮阴、湿润环境和多样植物才能繁殖的色彩鲜艳的蝴蝶无法生存)”可推知,桉树种植园对于色彩鲜艳的蝴蝶来说是不适宜生存的环境。故选D项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中的“The study conducted in the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo counted 31 species in native forests and only 21 in plantations, with a dramatic reduction in color variety. But it’s not just about beauty: color is an indicator of ecological complexity. When the range of colors shrinks, it means the entire ecosystem is simplifying.(在巴西圣埃斯皮里图州开展的这项研究发现,原生森林中有31种蝴蝶,而桉树种植园里只有21种,蝴蝶的色彩种类也大幅减少。但这不仅仅关乎美观:颜色是生态系统复杂性的一个指标。当色彩的种类范围shrinks时,就意味着整个生态系统正在变得单一化)”可知,前文提到色彩种类大幅减少,因此“shrinks”的意思是“缩减、变小”。故选C项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“Scientists have observed that in Amazonian forests regenerated after decades of abandonment, the variety of butterfly colors slowly returns.(科学家们观察到,在亚马逊地区那些被废弃数十年后自然恢复的森林里,蝴蝶的色彩种类在慢慢恢复)”以及““Green is not enough to represent nature,” García-Roa explained. “We need diversity and complexity. Only then can the forest shine again.”(“单靠绿色不足以代表自然,”加西亚-罗阿解释道,“我们需要多样性与复杂性。唯有如此,森林才能重焕生机。”)”可知,让自然自行恢复,减少人为干预,才能帮助森林重新焕发生机。故选D项。

Recently, the University of St.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. C

【答案】
Dear Tom,
I’m more than delighted to receive your email. In my opinion, using AI for spoken Chinese practice is an excellent idea. AI tools are available 24/7, allowing you to practice anytime. They can correct your pronunciation instantly and offer various conversation scenarios, which is incredibly helpful for building confidence.
However, I’d suggest balancing AI practice with real conversations. While AI provides technical correction, interacting with native speakers face to face helps you understand cultural context and natural expressions. Combining both methods will surely speed up your progress.
Keep me updated on your learning journey!
Yours,
Li Hua

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
To my surprise, the children responded in a way that warmed my heart. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Later that day, my guilt disappeared when I encountered them again. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
To my surprise, the children responded in a way that warmed my heart. Not only did they agree immediately, but one boy offered a sincere apology, while the little girl with pigtails suggested I prepare chicken soup for my husband, explaining that her grandmother always said warm soup could fix almost anything. Though deeply touched by their understanding, I returned indoors with a lingering sense of guilt, feeling I had unfairly deprived them of their favorite playing spot on such a perfect spring day.
Later that day my guilt disappeared when I encountered them again. They were playing behind the building. The girl with pigtails spotted me first and ran over. “Look what we have found!” she exclaimed, pointing to a small hill perfect for rolling down. Another boy added, “There’s even a bird’s nest in that tree!” Their faces glowed with excitement as they showed me their new playground. I apologized again for asking them to move, but they just smiled, “This place is much better than the sidewalk.”
