Many countries are considering reducing speed limits on motorways and in urban areas. Fuel savings and reductions in CO2 emissions are just two of the reasons for doing so.
Fuel consumption decreases the slower you drive, because the moving car has to overcome fewer physical forces such as air resistance and rolling friction (摩擦) between tyres and road. Air resistance increases with the square of the speed. This means that a car experiences 28% more air resistance at a speed of 130km/h than at 110km/h.
Slower speed is not the only way to reduce the CO2 emissions from your car. There are three automotive tips to help the climate else.
STREAMLINE THE CAR
1. Unevenness (不均匀) increases the air resistance of your car, and so its CO2 emissions. Four open windows increase fuel consumption by up to 27%.
GET UP THE GEARS (齿轮) QUICKLY
2. Petrol and diesel (柴油) cars should always be driven in the highest possible gear: the engine then has as few revolutions as possible. Fuel consumption between two gears can vary by up to 20%.
MAINTAIN TYRE PRESSURE
3. Car tyres at the recommended pressure ensure ideal driving. If the tyre pressure drops to 75% pressure, fuel consumption increases by 2%. If it drops by half, the increase is as much as 10%.
Here’s the breakdown of fuel consumption impact of driving habits and vehicle adjustments from the Federation of Danish Motorists (FDM).
1. Why does driving at a lower speed help cut fuel use?
A. It weakens the physical forces the car must fight against.
B. It changes the way air resistance affects the car.
C. It lightens the weight of the moving vehicle.
D. It makes the engine work at a higher speed.
2. What will happen if a car’s windows are wide open while driving?
A. It’ll lower the car’s air resistance.
B. It’ll reduce the car’s CO₂ emissions.
C. It’ll lead to a sharp rise in fuel use.
D. It’ll make the car run more smoothly.
3. What is the fuel-saving effect of reducing speed from 130km/h to 110km/h according to FDM data?
A. 10%. B. 16%. C. Up to 20%. D. Nearly 28%.

As one of 400-plus foreigners at my school — Thailand, France, and beyond — I belong to the International Division. In fact, most of the students on my campus are Chinese, and I interact with them daily through shared coursework and extracurricular activities, like sporting events, including an annual track and field meet and regular football matches. While English is the language of instruction in a few classes, most of us advance into higher-level courses conducted entirely in Chinese, which is also the language we speak in common.
While the school has emphasized internationalization, including admitting foreign students and sustaining international connections, it’s done so while preserving Chinese values and academic rigor (严谨性). Perhaps contrary to some international perceptions, Chinese education has matured and followed a progressive curve in its development, finding better pathways to high performance, creativity and innovation, eschewing old models of rote (死记硬背) and repetition. Consequently, while we’re well-known for our strong exam scores, which remains a baseline we all strive to support, we should also be known as a school where kids keep guitars and basketballs close at hand, and where students form bands and teams to play on and off campus. Above all we should be known as a school devoted to developing healthy minds and bodies, always ready to cooperate and compete.
Recently a group of seven of my friends came home with me after school to have a home cooked meal. We enjoyed a variety of dishes, piled with fruit, cheese and spicy Thai noodles. Afterwards, I brought out a big chocolate cake and we covered it with candles, singing “Happy Birthday” for my grandma back in America in five different languages. Her eyes brimmed with tears of happiness as she watched us online.
4. What is the common communication language among the students?
A. English. B. Chinese. C. Thai. D. French.
5. What does the underlined word “eschewing” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Abandoning. B. Adopting. C. Improving. D. Exploring.
6. What can we infer about the author’s school life?
A. It prioritizes exam scores.
B. It focuses on rote learning.
C. It balances academics and extracurriculars.
D. It gives up Chinese values for internationalization.
7. What does the author want to show through the birthday story?
A. Online birthday celebrations are more touching.
B. Home-cooked meals are popular among students.
C. The students are good at singing in different languages.
D. The school’s internationalization promotes cross-cultural bonds.
B 5. A 6. C 7. D

We know that some animals live longer than others, but we do not yet fully understand why. Researchers have previously identified brain size and metabolic (新陈代谢) rates as factors that can vary lifespan, but now evolutionary researchers from the UK’s University of Bath have found another factor, and it’s one that could be key to understanding why cats tend to live longer than dogs.
“Our study reveals the surprising role played by the immune system-not just in fighting disease, but also in supporting longevity across a wide range of mammals,” says Benjamin from the University of Bath’s Centre for Evolution.
The research does not dismiss the other reasons, rather suggesting longevity is a combination of factors. The researchers investigated the maximum lifespan of 46 different mammalian species, comparing the animals’ genes. The team studied dolphins, which can live for up to 39 years, and other whales that live for up to 100 years, but they also looked into smaller animals such as mice, which typically live for only one to two years.
The results showed that certain small animals live longer than expected, such as naked mole rats, which can live 20 years despite a small size and brain.
The species that live the longest had more genes associated with their immune system, according to the researchers; the team believes that a strong immune system acts to eliminate damaged cells, while also fighting infections and preventing disease. Cats are gifted with a strong natural immunity through a diverse set of immune-related genes, whereas the selective breeding of dogs has left some breeds with inherited immune deficiencies (缺陷).
The researchers now intend to look deeper into significant differences in the lifespans of different mammals by investigating specific genes that relate to cancer and other life-shortening diseases.
8. How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph?
A. By quoting an expert. B. By defining a concept.
C. By comparing findings. D. By providing statistics.
9. What did the University of Bath researchers focus on?
A. Daily eating habits. B. Living environments.
C. Genetic characteristics. D. Reproductive patterns.
10. Why does the author mention naked mole rats?
A. To compare their lifespan with that of mice.
B. To explain why small animals live shorter lives.
C. To show naked mole rats have the longest lifespan.
D. To prove size and brain size don’t determine lifespan.
11. What is the researchers’ next plan?
A. To study the immune system of cats and dogs.
B. To explore genes associated with severe diseases.
C. To confirm the role of metabolic rates in lifespan.
D. To investigate the effect of breeding on immunity.
C 9. C 10. D 11. B

For the first time ever, a powerful laser (激光) beam from Earth has reportedly hit a target deep in space. It could be the key to lightning-fast space communication in the future.
Imagine trying to aim at something a distance of a strand (股) of hair from a distance of 10km. That’s roughly equivalent to what Chinese researchers have achieved, using a laser in space to target a distant satellite orbiting the Moon.
Aerospace engineers of the Beijing-based Academy of Sciences have struck a satellite with an infrared (红外) laser in broad daylight and across a distance of 130,000km. The powerful laser beam hit a reflector on Tiandu-1, a Chinese lunar navigation and communications test satellite, which was launched in March 2024: The signal was returned to Earth in less than a second, captured by a telescope in Yunnan in South-Western China.
It is the first time ever that engineers have managed to accurately locate and measure a satellite so far away and to do so in daylight, when sunlight usually interferes with measurements. In similar earlier efforts, researchers had been able to collect data for only short periods of time. But by demonstrating that the technology also works in sunlight, the researchers have now shown that the method could enable much more frequent and accurate measurements in space.
The method could also be used to revolutionize communications in space. Currently we use radio waves to send messages to places such as Mars, but lasers could send greatly increased quantities of data in the same time.
The technology could pave the way for lightning-fast contact with future bases on the Moon — and perhaps one day on Mars. Stable laser links in space can reportedly send data to and from Earth up to 100 times faster than can radio waves, perhaps an important boost to communication with future astronauts on the Moon and Mars.
12. What did the Chinese researchers successfully make the laser beam reach?
A. A lunar base under construction.
B. A Mars exploration spacecraft.
C. A reflective device on a test satellite.
D. A ground telescope in Yunnan.
13. What makes the Chinese engineers’ achievement particularly remarkable?
A. Locating a so-distant satellite precisely in daylight.
B. Launching a Moon-orbiting satellite 130,000 km away.
C. Getting the signal returned to Earth in a second.
D. Using an infrared laser for the first time successfully.
14. What can be inferred about radio waves in space communication?
A. They are unable to reach Mars from Earth.
B. They will soon be replaced by laser technology.
C. They have lower data transmission capacity than lasers.
D They are more easily interfered with by sunlight than lasers.
15. Which of the following is the most suitable title for the text?
A. A Historic Laser Strike: Targeting the Moon
B. Tiandu-1 Satellite: Bridging Earth and the Moon
C. Radio Waves: The Future of Space Communication
D. China’s Laser: A Leap for Deep-Space Communication
C 13. A 14. C 15. D

根据第五段中“Currently we use radio waves to send messages to places such as Mars, but lasers could send greatly increased quantities of data in the same time.(目前我们使用无线电波向火星等地发送信息,但激光可以在相同的时间内发送更多的数据。)”
通读全文,尤其是根据第一段“For the first time ever, a powerful laser (激光) beam from Earth has reportedly hit a target deep in space. It could be the key to lightning-fast space communication in the future.(据报道,有史以来第一次,来自地球的强大激光束击中了深空的一个目标。这可能是未来闪电般快速太空通信的关键。)”可知,文章主要讲述了中国研究人员成功用激光束击中月球轨道上的测试卫星上的反射器,激光技术推动深空通信发展,中国的激光技术为深空通信带来了飞跃。因此选项D“China’s Laser: A Leap for Deep-Space Communication(中国的激光:深空通信的一大飞跃)”最符合文章主旨。故选D。

The Last Living Monet
Every winter, the head gardener at Claude Monet’s garden in the tiny French village of Giverny sits down to a pile of seed lists’ for disappointment. Avisard knows he must grow at least 520,000 plants to recreate these historic grounds. But each year at least 10 seed varieties he selected the previous season will disappear.____16____ When Monet moved to Giverny in 1883, nurseries (苗圃) were covered with Victorian flowers. Many of his favored varieties have since gone extinct or been completely changed as people prefer both harder (耐寒的) plants and flowers with ever-increasing blooms.
This season, Avisard is crazy about growing a taller pelargonium (天竺葵), a clumped-flower (簇状花) cousin to the geranium (老鹳草) that Monet famously planted in several red and pink beds in front of his pink house. “____17____” Avisard says. “To bring them back would be a resurrection (起死回生).”
Head gardener since 2016 Avisard now leads a dozen gardeners, twice as many as Monet enlisted. ____18____ Wetter winters followed by hot, dry summers lead to earlier crowds of pests. In addition, the management of tourists poses a significant challenge. ____19____
“It’s complicated.” says Avisard, “____20____” He and Giverny’s gardeners seek to please a man they’ve never met by creating a space so identifiable that it reminds strangers of paintings they see hanging in museums the world over.
As seeds disappear, the task only gets harder. “We want people to look out like Monet and see what he saw.”
A. You can’t buy them anywhere.
B. As with fashion, people’s tastes in flowers change.
C. The tourists have to feel like they are in Monet’s paintings.
D. These gardeners struggle with a wildly changing ecosystem.
E. Monet’s garden symbolizes impressionist art and natural beauty.
F. His work includes planting, researching and sourcing rare seeds.
G. Nearly 800,000 visitors flock to the area every year between April and October.
B 17. A 18. D 19. G 20. C

本空连接三个并列的谓语部分chase extreme success、argue over opposing views、struggle with work-life imbalance,表选择关系,用连词or连接。故填or。
refer to“指的是”。
The Doctrine of the Mean,指物,关系词代替先行词在从句中作主语,应用关系代词which引导。故填which。
固定搭配:from...to... 故填to。
根据上文“the most sustainable happiness”可知,此处用形容词最高级形式most stable或stablest“最稳定的”,作定语,修饰名词relationships。故填most stable或stablest。
teach sb. to do sth. 故填to balance。

Three months after moving into the old community, I’d only met Grandma Chen next door once. That day, I was carrying express boxes upstairs when she slowly came down, holding the handrail She gave me an oil-paper wrapped candy: “Young man, take care — these stairs are slippery.” I thanked her quickly and hurried on. Her door was always piled high with junk, and the potted plants on her windowsill (窗台) were wilted (枯萎的), giving off a lonely, cold atmosphere.
The change happened on a rainy night. I worked overtime late and rushed into the corridor with my electric bike, only to see Grandma Chen squatting (蹲着) at my door, soaked through, clutching a plastic bag tightly. “You’re back!” She stood up hurriedly and held out the bag. “I saw your jasmine (茉莉) fell over on the balcony this afternoon. I was afraid the rain would ruin its roots, so I moved it inside.” I suddenly remembered I’d forgotten to bring in the new jasmine pot that morning. Inside the bag, the flower was wrapped in an old towel, leaves still dotted with water — unharmed.
I urged her into my house to dry off, but she waved me away: “Don’t bother. I’m just a dirty old lady.” As she spoke, she slipped and stumbled toward the stairs. I caught her just in time and noticed her swollen knee. That night, I applied medicine to her knee. She sat on my sofa restlessly, repeating, “I’m troubling you so much.”
After that, I made sure to chat with Grandma Chen whenever we met. She still spoke little, but every morning when I left, there would be a bag of fresh vegetables from her small garden downstairs at my door. Last Saturday, I forgot to take out the trash before a business trip. When I came back, my doorway was spotless. Grandma Chen’s door was slightly open, and I heard faint coughing inside.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
I pushed the door gently.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Once Grandma Chen recovered, she knocked on my door.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I pushed the door gently. Inside, I saw Grandma Chen lying on her bed, looking pale and weak. A bowl of medicine was placed beside her, and I could tell from the smell that it was bitter. “Are you feeling better?” I asked, sitting down beside her. She nodded weakly and said, “I’m just a bit tired. Thank you for taking care of me.” I realized then that she had been taking care of me too, in her own quiet way.
Once Grandma Chen recovered, she knocked on my door. She held a basket of freshly picked vegetables in her hands and said, “I want to thank you for helping me when I was sick.” I smiled and invited her in, knowing that this simple act of kindness had brought us closer together. From that day on, we became like family, always there to lend a helping hand whenever one of us needed it, which made our lives in the old community much warmer.

3 What is the fuel-saving effect of reducing speed from 130km/h to 110km/h according to FDM data?
A. 10%. B. 16%. C. Up to 20%. D. Nearly 28%.
B

The researchers now intend to look deeper into significant differences in the lifespans of different mammals by investigating specific genes that relate to cancer and other life-shortening diseases
8. How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph?
A. By quoting an expert. B. By defining a concept.
C. By comparing findings. D. By providing statistics.

Aerospace engineers of the Beijing-based Academy of Sciences have struck a satellite with an infrared (红外) laser in broad daylight and across a distance of 130000km.
D. They are more easily interfered with by sunlight than lasers.
15. Which of the following is the most suitable title for the text?
A. A Historic Laser Strike: Targeting the Moon
B. Tiandu-1 Satellite: Bridging Earth and the Moon
C. Radio Waves: The Future of Space Communication
D. China’s Laser: A Leap for Deep-Space Communication

Head gardener since 2016, Avisard now leads a dozen gardeners, twice as many as Monet enlisted.
A You can’t buy them anywhere.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
