Conservation photography occupies a unique space, combining the art of visual storytelling with the urgency of environmental advocacy. Cristina Mittermeier is a pioneering figure in this field.
Raised in the countryside of Mexico, Mittermeier’s early love for nature grew in an environment where exploration was encouraged, and books about ocean explorers and adventures fueled her imagination. This passion led her to study marine (海洋的) biology, a field she initially pursued with the dream of studying whales but soon realized came with the realities of environmental damage. Witnessing the harmful impacts of industrial fishing firsthand shifted her path. Science, while essential, felt insufficient to stimulate the broader public. Photography, discovered by chance, became her chosen medium — a universal language that could bridge the gap between data and emotion. Her recent book, Hope, shows this idea.
Mittermeier is no idealist lost in the clouds of artistry. Her approach to conservation is rooted in practicality and inclusivity. She rejects historical models of conservation that have excluded local communities, advocating instead for solutions that honor the knowledge and practices of native peoples. This perspective (观点) informs her co-founding of Sea Legacy, an organization that highlights the efforts of unsung conservation heroes.
A key theme in Mittermeier’s philosophy is the concept of “enoughness,” which means finding happiness in community, purpose, and connection rather than material possessions.
Hope underscores her commitment to reimagining conservation communication. The book’s 130photographs, taken over two decades, are organized not by geography or species but by themes that tell the story of life on Earth, focusing on connection and interdependence. Through her work, Mittermeier continually seeks to empower the next generation, emphasizing the role of youth in reshaping the planet’s future. Visual storytelling, she argues, holds great potential to inspire young people to action.
4. What inspired Mittermeier to pursue marine biology?
A. Her study of whales. B. The damage to the ocean.
C. Her childhood love for nature. D. The big influence of her family.
5. Why did Mittermeier shift from marine biology to photography?
A. She wanted to be an artist.
B She needed a career after leaving Sea Legacy.
C. She didn’t benefit from studying marine animals.
D. She realized science couldn’t reach enough people.
6. What does Mittermeier emphasize in her philosophy?
A. Scientific methods that were used in marine biology.
B. Solutions that involve local communities.
C. Raising money for large organizations.
D. Focusing on one specific species.
7. What is the main purpose of Hope?
A. To document wildlife for research. B. To tell stories of adventure and discovery.
C. To raise awareness about the environment. D. To entertain people with beautiful pictures.

At 7 Breaths, a meditation (冥想) studio in central London, groups of young-professional types gather several times a day simply to breathe. The studio offers yoga and meditation sessions but their signature class is focused on “breath work”. Those attending sit atop small cushions (垫子) in a warm, minimalist space, as an instructor gently helps them first pay attention to their breathing and then gradually lengthen their breaths. The goal: to destress.
For modern breath work enthusiasts who say that guided breathing helps them feel better, it undoubtedly does. But to test whether such exercises can reduce stress, you need randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
A study published in Scientific Reports in 2023 looked at the results of 12 RCTs, including some 785 participants, to examine the effect of slow breathing on stress. The studies used a mixture of in-person coaching, online classes or self- guided breathing. Participants who took part in the breath work sessions reported greater stress-reduction than those in the control group. The effect was small but significant, basically in line with the benefit of online cognitive behavior therapy (认知行为疗法).
How might breathing control mood? One idea is that it forces attention away from negative or stressful thoughts. Researchers have also found that voluntarily slowing breathing can increase heart-rate variability — the changes in the timing between heartbeats. Increasing it, the theory goes, should therefore be a good thing. There is also evidence that slow breathing and stress regulation might use the same brain pathways, at least in mice. A study published in Nature Neuroscience in November 2024, found that stimulating a pathway that causes slow breathing in mice also reduced their anxiety.
The evidence on breath work might still be unclear, but the practice appears to have no real downsides. Many things like infection are now understood to influence mental health. Slow, controlled breathing may soon be added to the list.
8. What can be learned about 7 Breaths?
A. It advocates a minimalist lifestyle. B. It aims to relieve attendees’ stress.
C. It enjoys great popularity in London. D. It offers physically demanding classes.
9. Why was the 2023 study carried out?
A. To compare breath work with other therapies.
B. To test which type of breath work worked the best.
C. To reveal the limitations of breath work studies.
D. To provide evidence from RCTs for breath work.
10. What is the main focus of paragraph 4 regarding slow breathing?
A. Mechanisms behind it. B. New studies on it.
C. Methods of practicing it. D. Experts’ opinion about it.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward practicing breath work?
A. Dissatisfied. B. Hopeful. C. Doubtful. D. Uninterested.
D
Ocean alkalinity (碱度) enhancement is a proposed method of removing extra CO2 from the atmosphere. It involves adding alkaline substances, such as basalt or calcium oxide, to ocean water to increase its pH. This helps to change dissolved (溶解的) CO2 in seawater into carbon compounds, unlocking the capacity for the oceans to draw down further CO2 from the atmosphere.
In theory, ocean alkalinization could remove many billions of tons more CO2 from the atmosphere, helping to limit the impacts of climate change. But is releasing vast quantities of alkaline substances into the ocean harmless?
Chris Reinhard at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and his team investigated how the release of alkaline minerals would affect the cycling of carbon in the ocean. Using computer models, they assessed the impact of alkaline mineral release on “marine (海洋的) snow”, the tiny pieces of organic matter that sink from upper layers to the deep ocean and are central to the ecological and biological function of the ocean. They also modelled how effective alkaline minerals would be at bolstering carbon absorption in the oceans.
The research produced some worrying findings: Naturally occurring alkaline minerals such as basalt were found to be ineffective at increasing ocean carbon absorption, because they don’t dissolve well in ocean water. They may also seriously affect the composition of marine snow, reducing the availability of organic matter that small sea creatures and other animals rely on for sustenance. This could have serious consequences across the food web in the ocean, even affecting the number of fish, warns Reinhard.
Christopher Pearce at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, UK, says the study raises some interesting questions, but more research is needed to see if the findings apply to real-world tests. Shallow coastal waters may respond differently to alkalinization compared with the open-ocean settings the study modelled.
12. What is the main purpose of ocean alkalinization?
A. To reduce atmospheric CO2.
B. To create more marine snow.
C. To improve marine biodiversity.
D. To remove carbon from the ocean.
13. What does the underlined word “bolstering” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Breaking. B. Balancing. C. Blocking. D. Boosting.
14. How does alkalinization affect marine ecosystems?
A. It pollutes marine snow.
B. It damages the food chain.
C. It prevents fish from breathing.
D. It stops organic matter from dissolving.
15. What does Christopher Pearce suggest about the findings?
A. They need further confirmation.
B. They conflict with real-world tests.
C. They apply only to shallow waters.
D. They are irrelevant to open oceans.

Reduce your test anxiety
Test anxiety is something many students struggle with. ___16___ . Most people think it’s caused by the pressure of limited time, tough material, or high expectations. As a matter of fact, the real source of stress is not these external factors but how we react to them. This reaction is what I call “disconnection”. ___17___ .
Here’s a look at how disconnection plays out and what you can do to overcome it.
1. Physical disconnection: Tension in the body
When faced with a challenging situation like answering a difficult question, your body tightens up, cutting off oxygen and making it harder for your brain to function. Solution: ___18___ . That will help reduce tension and keep your body calm, allowing your mind to stay sharp.
2. Mental disconnection: Negative thinking
Negative thoughts are another form of disconnection. Thoughts like “I’ll never pass “or” I’m not good at this” consume your confidence and affect your performance. Solution: Replace negative self-talk with positivity. ___19___ . A positive mindset keeps you mentally connected and confident.
3. Spiritual disconnection: ___20___
Spirit is related to purpose. The final form of disconnection is when you lose sight of why you’re taking the test in the first place. Solution: Stay connected to your spirit by concentrating on your aim while taking a test— to be present and answer questions as best you can.

I’d been running marathons for nearly a decade, but signing up to lead a half-marathon training group was something new for me. I had to run in all kinds of conditions — rain, heat, snow — but coaching others was a different kind of challenge. When the organizers asked me to help lead a group for Zion’s nighttime half-marathon, I couldn’t resist. The race course through Zion National Park at daybreak was one of the most beautiful routes I’d ever run, and I wanted others to experience it.
At the first online meeting, I looked over the faces on my screen, excited to meet my new team. Sarah stood out. She looked very frightened, nodding nervously when I spoke. When she shared her reason for joining, she hesitated and said, “I wanted to challenge myself, but I’m afraid of darkness.” I nodded, sensing her struggle: “You’re not alone in feeling nervous, Sarah. But remember, we’re all in this together.”
Over the weeks, our team trained separately but stayed connected online, sharing our progress, struggles, and even a few funny stories. But Sarah mostly stayed quiet. I could tell that while the others were growing excited, her anxiety was building. One evening, I got a message from her: Nicole, I don’t think I can do this. I’m afraid I’ll hold everyone back. I knew this was my moment to step up as her coach. I called her right away. “You signed up for this because you wanted to push yourself, right? You’re stronger than you think,” I said. “Courage isn’t the absence of fear— it’s facing it. I’ll be with you every step of the way.” For a moment, I wasn’t sure if my words had reached her, but she eventually agreed to keep training.
On race day, excitement filled the air as our team gathered in the darkness at 4 a.m. Sarah, however, looked ready to run away. I walked over, smiled, and said, “You’re here. That’s already a victory. Just focus on one step at a time.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
As we started, I stayed close to Sarah.

【答案】Dear Elon,
I hope you’re doing well. Our school recently held a photography contest called “Charming Campus” to promote campus culture construction.
I entered a photo of the school garden, showing blooming flowers and students reading together. It captures the peaceful and lively atmosphere where we can see the spirits of the school.
Participating was a wonderful experience. I enjoyed capturing the beauty and learned more about photography. It made me appreciate our campus even more. If you’d like, I can share more photos with you!
Yours,
Li Hua

As we started, I stayed close to Sarah. The darkness wrapped around us like a thick blanket, but the faint glow of our team’s headlamps cut through it, forming a flickering line ahead. I kept chatting to her softly, pointing out the faint outline of Zion’s red cliffs and the gentle hoot of an owl nearby, trying to draw her focus away from her fear. When her pace slowed, I matched her steps, urging her to take steady, deep breaths. Bit by bit, her tense shoulders relaxed, and she even let out a small laugh when a breeze ruffled her hair. By the time the first pale streaks of dawn lit up the horizon, her steps had grown firm and confident.
When we finally crossed the finish line, Sarah turned to me, tears in her eyes. “I actually did it,” she choked out, her voice shaking with a mix of joy and disbelief. I squeezed her hand tightly, my own eyes warm with pride. “You were amazing — every single step,” I told her. Our teammates swarmed over, cheering and patting her back, and Sarah laughed through her tears, looking at the sunrise painting the mountains gold. In that moment, I knew this was why I loved coaching: helping someone turn their fear into their greatest victory.
