How high can birds fly?
Birds are incredible flyers, but some fly high to heights that seem impossible! While most birds stay near the ground, a few species have adapted to survive in extreme altitudes.
The Rttppell’s Griffon Vulture (黑白兀鹫) holds the record for the highest flight ever recorded. In 1973, one hit an airplane at about 11,300 meters — almost as high as commercial jets! Another high flyer is the Bar-headed Goose (斑头雁), which migrates over the Himalayas at 6,000—9,000 meters. Even the Common Crane (灰鹤) reaches 10,000 meters during long journeys, using strong winds to fly easily.
Why fly so high?
•Save energy: Thin air reduces drag (阻力), so birds fly farther without flapping.
•Avoid predators (食肉动物):Eagles and other hunters can’t reach them at extreme heights.
•Catch fast winds: High-altitude air currents help birds travel faster.
How do they survive up there?
Birds have special adaptive capacity. For example, the Bar-headed Goose has blood that holds oxygen better, letting it breathe easily even on the Mount Qomolangma. Their thick feathers also keep them warm in freezing temperatures.
Fun fact: The Wandering Albatross can fly for days without resting, using its 3-meter wingspan to fly over oceans!
16. What is the highest altitude a bird has ever flown?
A. 6,000 meters. B. 9,000 meters.

A. The Rüppell’s Griffon Vulture. B. The Bar-headed Goose.
C. The Common Crane. D. The Wandering Albatross.
18. Why do birds fly high in the sky?
A. To find water. B. To save energy.
C. To build nests. D. To play with other birds.
19. How do high-flying birds stay warm in cold air?
A. By drinking hot water. B. By growing thicker feathers.
C. By flying faster. D. By sleeping more.
20. Which bird can fly for days without stopping?
A. The Common Crane. B. The Bar-headed Goose.
C. The Wandering Albatross. D. The Rüppell’s Griffon Vulture.
【答案】16. C 17. B 18. B 19. B 20. C

Sugar is everywhere in our lives. Many of us love its sweet taste. But what happens to our bodies after eating sugar? And how does it connect to our health?
After eating sugar, most people feel energetic at first. That’s because sugar can quickly raise blood sugar levels, giving a short-term energy boost. However, this doesn’t last long.
Eating too much sugar is closely linked to health problems. For example, it can increase the risk of getting diseases like diabetes. I once faced a health issue related to sugar. Due to too much sugar intake over time, I started having health troubles.

A global survey has found that people who live in cities have better hearing than those who live in quiet village scientists now believe that the ear needs exercise to keep in shape.A team of scientists at the University of Giessen,Germany ,has spent over ten years testing the hearing of more than 10,000 people around the world. As expected, people exposed(暴露) to very loud noises at work, such as construction workers, had poor hearing. But the hearing of those living in the quiet countryside, such as farmers, was just as bad. Orchestral( 管弦乐的 )musicians and airline pilots, however, can usually hear well although exposed to noise at work. And there is little difference between people who go to noisy concerts and those who do not.Hearing experts have long believed that long time exposure to excessively (过度地) loud noise degrades hearing and so industrial standards are based on people's average exposure to sound energy. However,it is the very sudden strong noises that do the most damage, while exposure to continual noise " trains" the ear to put up with it.

Music plays an important part in many people’s lives. It has changed through the years. Today there are several different styles of music.
Pop is a simple form of music, easy to follow and remember. Pop songs are often short three-minute songs that people like at once when they first hear them. The words of the songs are often about emotions, usually love, joy, and regret. Songs by The Beatles are examples of pop songs.
Rock music is usually loud, with strong beats(节拍) from different musical instruments, like drums and two or more electric guitars. One guitar usually makes very low, deep sounds, while the other makes high, quick sounds. Rock songs can be fast or slow, with strong vocals(歌声) and words. The Rolling Stones was one of the early rock bands.
Hip hop is a style of music that has a DJ making electronic instrumental sounds, while a singer raps(说唱). The words are considered to be the most important part of hip hop. They usually tell a story about the singer, and sometimes use a lot of strong or bad language. An example of a well-known hip hop singer is Eminem.
