For many, Chinese characters seem like complex(复杂的) symbols. However, Lena, a 20-year-old American college student, views them in a unique way. To her, each character has its own story. She pictures “ren” (person) as a cat’s face, and “ceng” (once) as an angry robot.
Lena gained popularity when she spent only 30 minutes drawing “ceng” and posted it on Rednote (or Xiaohongshu). Amazingly, this simple drawing got 40,000 likes overnight. Now, her creative artworks raise discussions about language, art, and cultural exchange.
Growing up in a diverse (多元的) community with many Asians, Lena was surrounded by different languages and cultures. “As a child, I had Chinese friends. I was attracted by seeing their names on lunch boxes. This language was so new to me, completely different from Western languages,” Lena remembered. This early curiosity remained with her and reappeared in college during a US-China relations course, which deepened her interest in modern Chinese culture.
Deep in rednote, Lena noticed more characters that looked like various objects. She describes herself as imaginative and highly perceptive, often spotting details others miss.
Besides drawing, Lena translates all her posts into Chinese to show respect to her followers. Her efforts have helped her make Chinese friends online, chatting about daily life and food. Some followers said Lena understands the beauty of Chinese characters better than many Chinese. “It’s because you’re used to them,” Lena replied, adding the opposite is also true. For example, she learned from Chinese friends that “orz” looks like a person bowing in apology, but it means nothing in English. “It’s something I never thought of. That’s the result of a non-native looking at unfamiliar characters,” she said.
As Lena plans to share more character-inspired art on Rednote, her story shows a truth: language is more than words; it’s about connection and understanding the world from others’ perspectives.
4. How did Lena become popular on Rednote?
A. By posting creative drawings of Chinese characters.
B. By translating English articles into Chinese.
C. By sharing her daily life in China.
D. By having online chats with Chinese netizens.
5. What deepened Lena’s interest in modern Chinese culture?
A. Her Chinese friends. B. Using Rednote.
C. A US-China relations course. D. Drawing Chinese characters.
6. Why did Lena mention the example “orz”?
A. To show non-natives’ unique views. B. To prove followers’ over-praise.
C. To explain learning difficulty. D. To explain grammar differences.
7. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Lena gains popularity on campus.
B. Creative characters bridge language and culture.
C. Diverse background increases Lena’s interest.
D. Chinese characters: more than simple symbols.

A bronze (青铜) horse head sculpture (雕塑), a treasure of China’s Old Summer Palace that went missing 160 years ago, returned to its original (最初的) palace home Tuesday. It is the first time that a lost important cultural relic from the Old Summer Palace has been returned to and housed at its original location after being sent from overseas.
Twelve animal head sculptures once formed a zodiac (生肖) water clock in Beijing’s Yuanmingyuan, built by Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty. The originals were looted (抢劫) from the royal garden by Anglo-French allied forces in 1860 during the second Opium War.
Macao (澳门) billionaire (亿万富翁) Stanley Ho bought the bronze horse head and decided to donate it to the National Cultural Heritage Administration (NCHA) and return it to its original home. The NCHA has spent one year refurbishing (刷新) the old Zhengjue Temple, the main place of worship for Qing Dynasty emperors in the garden, to an exhibition venue.
An exhibition in memory of the return of the horse head has kicked off at the temple, displaying about 100 items including relics and photographs. “The horse head sculpture was returned to its original palace home amid the challenges brought by COVID-19,” said an official. “It also led to an all-round upgrade of security at the Old Summer Palace, which allows for long-term exhibitions.”
“There is international consensus (共识) on returning lost cultural relics to their original homes, and China’s efforts to bring relics home in recent years have strengthened that consensus,” he added.
8. What do we know about the bronze horse head sculpture?
A. It was bought and donated by a foreigner.
B. It was given back by a foreign country.
C. It has been put at its original location.
D. It was sold about 160 years ago.
9. Which of the following words can best describe Stanley Ho?
A. Loving one’s motherland. B. Kind-hearted.
C. Full of energy. D. Positive.
10. What does the underline phrase in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A Started. B. Prepared.
C. Cancelled. D. Removed.
11. What can we infer from what the official said?
A. China is sure to get all the lost important cultural treasures back.
B. China has contributed greatly to the international consensus in recent years.
C. Returning lost cultural relics to their original homes has a long way to go.
D. More Chinese will buy lost important cultural relics from foreign countries.
D
Learning Chinese could be one of the most important decisions you have ever made. Chinese is becoming the language to learn in the 21st century. With the world’s largest population and the rapidly growing middle class, China stands to become the engine of the world’s economy in the coming years. This will make learning Chinese very important for people in many industries, or for those who wish to visit China or learn from its culture and history.
There is an ongoing effort to modernize (使现代化) the writing system and standardize (标准化) the language. An increasing number of people learning Chinese are learning Mandarin (普通话), so unless you absolutely need to learn another dialect (such as Cantonese), be sure you are studying Mandarin.
For native English speakers, Chinese is one of the most difficult and most different languages to learn. The vocabulary is wholly unfamiliar and unlike anything we know. In addition, in the Chinese tone system, words are spoken in rising or falling tones (声调), which help to distinguish (区分) them. Furthermore, there is the Chinese writing system — a collection of thousands of individual ideograms (表意文字), or symbols, which represent a word or an idea. These ideograms have no phonetic (语音的) value — that is to say, we can’t tell how the word is pronounced by how it is written. There is a method of presenting written Chinese in a phonetic script called pinyin. If you are learning Chinese, you’ll be working with this pinyin system, but the beauty of the traditional writing system shouldn’t be passed up. All these factors make learning Chinese difficult for us. Yet, for a determined learner, there’s always a way to overcome these difficulties.
12. Why is learning Chinese becoming more and more important?
A. Chinese engines are very welcome.
B. China has the world’s largest population.
C. There are more and more rich people in China.
D. China is becoming more and more important to the world’s economy.
13. What’s the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The difficulties of learning Chinese.
B. The advantages of learning Chinese.
C. The Chinese tone system.
D. The Chinese writing system.
14. What can we learn from the text?
A. The author thinks Chinese is as difficult as English.
B. The author is interested in the Chinese language and its culture.
C. Foreign languages can play a great role in industrial development.
D. As long as the pinyin system is learned well, one can learn Chinese well.
15. What would be probably written following this text?
A. The sources of Chinese characters.
B. The importance of learning Chinese.
C. The advice on how to learn Chinese.
D. The difficulties of learning other languages.

【答案】4. A 5. C 6. A 7. B

A. Started. B. Prepared.
C. Cancelled. D. Removed.
11. What can we infer from what the official said?
A. China is sure to get all the lost important cultural treasures back.

C. Returning lost cultural relics to their original homes has a long way to go.
D. More Chinese will buy lost important cultural relics from foreign countries.

【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. C
