Thanks to technology, the way people communicate with others has greatly changed. Now we live in a world with mobile phones. Our life has become easier since the invention of the mobile phones.
I ordered some snacks on my phone yesterday afternoon. Once I got home from work that evening, I saw they were already at my door. So fast! Have you ever thought about how people in the past communicated and did things without mobile phones? Take the post for example. Before phones, if you wanted to keep in touch with someone far away, you needed to send them a letter in the mail. When my mum was in primary school, she used to do this with her “pen pal”. A pen pal is a name for a person you keep in touch with mainly through postal mail. My mum would write to her pen pal every few months, and then, after a little while, her pen pal would write back. Later, once email became a common thing, sending letters in the post was so slow to people. It became known as “snail mail”!
What if you were at an airport in the time before mobile phones? My dad said that in the 1970s there used to be message boards at some airports. If you needed to exit (离开) the airport and wanted to leave a message for a friend who would be arriving later, you could write them a message and stick it on the message board. Then, your friend could go check the board later and see what you wrote to them!
So the ways that people use to communicate are becoming easier and quicker.

59.Why does the writer use “snail mail” in Paragraph 2?

C.Because sending letters in the post is fast. D.Because sending letters in the post is slow.

Fights at school sometimes happen. But how can you keep away from a fight? Here’s something you can do.
Be calm. Sometimes, you feel so angry that you really want to teach somebody a lesson. But being angry can’t solve problems. Neither can a fight. Instead, it may bring you more problems. In the school, everyone involved (卷入) in a fight will be punished, no matter who started it. There are no winners in a fight.
Shout loudly. If you know someone is coming up behind you to attack, turn towards the person with your hands up in front of your body and loudly say “stop” before walking away. Loud voice can usually make the attacker calm down. If the person doesn’t stop, cry for help by calling out the name of a teacher whose office is nearby.
Learn to refuse. Your friend may ask you to join in a fight. Learn to say no. Helping him fight is not really helpful to him. If you really want to give him a hand, try to ask him to give it up. Also, you can tell him if he gets involved in a fight, he may get hurt and be punished. Then, try to learn why he wants a fight and help him find a right way to deal with the problem.

When I was six, Dad brought home a dog one day, who was called “Brownie”. My brothers and I all loved Brownie and did different things with her. One of us would walk her, another would feed her, and then there were baths, playing catch and many other games. Brownie, in return, loved each and every one of us. One thing that most touched my heart was that she would go to anyone who was sick and just be with them. We always felt better when she was around.
One day, as I was getting her food, she chewed up (咬破) one of Dad’s shoes, which had to be thrown away in the end. I knew Dad would be mad and I had to let her know what she did was wrong. When I looked at her and said, “Bad girl.” She looked down at the ground and then went and hid. I saw a tear in her eyes.
Brownie was not just our family pet. She went everywhere with us. People would stop and ask if they could pat (拍打) her. Of course she’d let anyone pat her. She was just the most lovable dog. There were many times when we’d be out walking and a small child would come over and pull on her hair. She never barked (吠) or tried to get away. Funny thing is she would smile. This frightened (使惊吓) people because they thought she was showing her teeth. Far from the truth (远非事实), she loved everyone.
Now many years have passed since Brownie died of old age. I still miss the days when she was with us.

A.Because the writer likes writing letters. B.Because the writer likes sending letters.
C.Because sending letters in the post is fast. D.Because sending letters in the post is slow.
60.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Leaving a message is useful. B.Sending letters in the post is popular.
