The social purpose of the copyright system is to encourage creativity and the advancement of knowledge by giving those who make intellectual (智力的) contributions a “unique right to their writings and discoveries” for limited times. Protection is provided for a much longer time for copyrights than for patents. The U.S. Copyright Law of 1976 provides a term or the lifetime of the author plus 50 years. It recognizes that the value of written works often extends over a longer time than that of technological advances in the public area.
It is essential to register for formal copyright protection in order to have some degree of protection against the copyright of one’s works by others. The procedure for obtaining a copyright registration is quite simple—an application is submitted with a small fee and two copies of the work. No examination is made, and the copyright is immediately in force.
The Copyright Office will provide on request a variety of leaflets (小册子) describing the procedure and giving information about the classes of subject matter that can be registered.
Those are subject to protection:
(1) Books and newspapers (2) Lectures
(3) Dramatic compositions (4) Films
(5) Maps (6) Works of ant
(7) Sound recordings (8) Photographs
(9) Prints and labels (10) Musical compositions
Those are not subject to protection:
(1) Ideas (2) Systems, methods and plans
(3) Government publications (4) Laws and opinions of courts
You can contact the Copyright Office (wwcoprightfice.org) for more information.
1. In which aspect do copyrights differ from patents?
A. The application fee. B. The duration of protection.
C. The intellectual value. D. The contribution to society.
2. Which of the following should you provide for copyright registration?
A. Copies of your work. B. Photos of yourself.
C. Introductory leaflets. D. Examination certificates.
3. According to the text, the Copyright Office may reject ______.
A. a movie about a new method of time travel
B. an original musical composition for children
C. a book about one’s opinions on American laws
D. an official document issued by the local county

Kristin Schell is the founder of The Turquoise Table, a movement of ordinary people who want to create community right in their own front yards. Ten years ago, she and her family moved to a new home in Austin, Texas.
One day, Kristin tried to connect with her new neighbors by hosting a party. She bought a few picnic tables but the delivery driver set one table down in her front yard by mistake. “After the party, I painted the table turquoise — my favorite color — and put it in the front yard, just a few feet from the sidewalk,” she says.
That turquoise table became the place where Kristin and her kids hung out. They played games, did crafts and ate snacks. “We got intentional about where we spent our time,” Kristin says. “We became ‘front yard people’.”
Neighbors began to stop by to introduce themselves and sit down for a chat. Kristin invited people to join her at the table for coffee or iced tea. Then neighbors asked Kristin if their family could put a picnic table in their front yard too. A movement was born. “It was a simple way to slow down and connect with others,” she says. The turquoise table was inviting and had a shared feel.
People often hesitate to invite others into their homes. They think their house is too messy, it’s not big enough or they don’t have enough time. “Our perfectionism can cause us to miss out on the joy of connecting with others,” Kristin says. Her picnic table takes away the excuses — and the pressure.
She likes how it enables her to take a small step toward easing loneliness and building relationships in her community. “People’s greatest need is to know that they are loved and that they belong,” she says.
A decade after their Texas beginnings, thousands of Turquoise Tables exist in all 50 states and in 13 countries around the world. Not all of them are actually turquoise. “No matter what color it is, it’s a friendship table,” Kristin says.
4. Why did Kristin Schell start the movement?
A. To host more parties in her front yard.
B. To entertain her friends and neighbors.
C. To engage with people in the neighbourhood.
D. To create harmonious communities worldwide.
5. Which of the following words best describe Kristin Schell according to the text?
A. Creative and sociable. B. Friendly and humorous.
C. Generous and ambitious. D. Cautious and responsible.
6. What can be inferred from the text?
A. People don’t like others to step into their houses.
B. The campaign has a big impact at home and abroad.
C. Kristin Schell bought the turquoise table to host a party.
D. People feel unwilling to join in the front yard chat at first.
7. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Love Your Neighbors B. An Amazing Woman
C. Happy Front Yard Time D. Tables Where All Are Welcome
【答案】4. C 5. A 6. B 7. D

Five times stronger than steel, spider silk’s unique qualities were recognised by the Ancient Greeks-and more recently, scientists have looked at applications from medicine to engineering.
Now, one Japanese startup, Spiber, is exploring how spider web s could transform the clothing industry. The biotech company started by making a spider-silk-like material in the lab and has since expanded its fabric range to include more sustainable alternatives to wool and cashmere, says Kenji Higashi, head of business development at Spiber.
Spiders create web s by giving out liquid protein that will later change into silk. Kazuhide Sekiyama and Junichi Sugahara, Spiber’s founders, decided to create a material that is identical to spider silk. They studied “thousands of different spider species,” as well as other silk-producing species, and collected a database of silk varieties.
Having successfully produced the spider silk alternative, the team went on to develop a range of fabrics by changing the protein order. Spiber’s fibers are made by fermenting(发酵) water, sugar and nutrients with specially modified microbes (改良微生物) in steel tanks to produce protein polymers to be made into a fiber. Later, the team discovered that the spider silk alternative shrinks(收缩) when wet, so they modified the protein to get a fiber with desirable properties, such as water proof and increased strength, which is suitable for an outdoor jacket.
Fashion is one of the most polluting industries in the world. It produces around 2.1 billion metric tons of CO2 every year. Higashi says Spiber’s biodegradable products are predicted to generate just one-fifth of the carbon emissions of animal-based fibers once they are in mass production. And it is now developing a process that will transform abandoned clothes made from natural materials like cotton into the sugars needed for fermentation.
Currently trying to expand its production and getting ready for a full commercial launch of its products, Spiber hopes its technology will help to “solve some of the big global challenges that we’re facing,” says Higashi.
8. What is a primary purpose of Spiber’s research in the lab?
A. To develop new applications of spider silk. B. To invent a replacement for spider silk.
C. To transform the structure of spider silk. D. To study silk-producing spider species.
9. How did the team address the shrinking problem?
A. By adapting the protein. B. By diversifying microbes.
C. By wetting the fiber. D. By lengthening fermenting time.
10. What can best describe Spiber’s products?
A. Fancy and stylish. B. Costly yet profitable.
C. Strong and sustainable. D. Lightweight yet resource-consuming.
11. What are the last two paragraphs mainly about?
A. The practical application of Spiber’s products. B. The environmental value of Spiber’s products.
C. The technical challenges of Spiber’s products. D. The potential markets of Spiber’s products.

D
If you live on this planet, there’s a decent chance you’ve seen the classic Star TrekEpisode, in which captain Kirk and several members find themselves in what appears to be another universe.
These days, it seems the idea of the multiverse—many worlds—is having its Hollywood moment. Its appeal as a storytelling device is obvious—characters explore a multi-world with varying degrees of similarity to our own, as well as different versions of themselves. Hence, it has been fully established in mainstream pop culture.
While Hollywood can’t seem to get enough of the multiverse, it remains deeply controversial (有争议的) among scientists. Advocates on the two sides show no mercy toward each other in their books, on their blogs. But physicists didn’t pull the idea out of thin air—rather, several distinct lines of reasoning seem to point to the multiverse’s existence. However, critics warn that making the multiverse legal could make it harder for the public to distinguish speculative (推测性的) theories from established fact, making it more difficult to keep pseudo-science (伪科学) at bay. Giving credit to such speculation risks “turning fundamental physics into pseudo-science”.
The multiverse controversy is rooted in the idea of test ability. If we can’t interact with these other universes, or detect them in any way, some experts insist that reduces them to mere philosophical speculation. But Carroll, an advocate for “many worlds”, argues that mathematics is the language describing our physical theories. Since Schrdinger’s equation (方程), on which Quanturr (量子) mechanic rests, predicts the existence of many worlds, so be it.
Could a more expansive view of the universe itself be the next breakthrough? As Siegfried puts it: “Every time in the past that we’ve thought, ‘We’ve got it; this is what the whole universe is’—the people who’ve said, ‘Maybe there’s more than one of those’ have always turned out to be right.”
12. Why is Hollywood so occupied with the multiverse?
A. It makes for engaging plots.
B. It is a much-talked-about topic.
C. It is helpful to popularize science.
D. It dominates the mainstream pop culture.
13. What do the underlined words in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Out of date. B. Out of place. C. Out of nowhere. D. Out of question.
14. According to the opponents, the basic standard of fundamental physics is that ______.
A. it can be detected somehow
B. it can be reasoned logically
C. it can be interpreted philosophically
D. it can be predicted by mathematics equation
15 What might be the author’s attitude toward the multiverse?
A. Doubtful. B. Dismissive. C. Unclear. D. Approving.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. A 15. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇议论文,主要讲述了虽然近来好莱坞似乎对多元宇宙欲罢不能,但它在科学家中仍然存在着深刻的争议。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Its appeal as a storytelling device is obvious—characters explore a multi-world with varying degrees of similarity to our own, as well as different versions of themselves.(作为一种讲故事的手段,它的吸引力显而易见——角色探索了一个与我们自己不同程度相似的多元世界,以及不同版本的自己。)”可知,多元宇宙作为一种讲故事的手段,非常具有吸引力。故选A。
out of thin air意为“凭空,无中生有地”,和out of nowhere(突然出现)意思相近。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“However, critics warn that making the multiverse legal could make it harder for the public to distinguish speculative(推测性的) theories from established fact, making it more difficult to keep pseudo-science(伪科学) at bay. Giving credit to such speculation risks ‘turning fundamental physics into pseudo-science’.(然而,批评者警告说,使多元宇宙合法化可能会使公众更难区分推测性理论和既定事实,从而更难遏制伪科学。相信这种推测有可能‘把基础物理学变成伪科学’。)”可知,批评者认为让多元宇宙合法化可能会使公众难以区分推测性理论和既定事实,相信这种推测有可能导致基础物理学变成伪科学。由此可推测出,基础物理学是以既定事实为基础的,可以通过某种方式发现。故选A。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Since Schrdinger’s equation (方程), on which Quanturr (量子) mechanic rests, predicts the existence of many worlds, so be it.(既然量子力学所依据的薛定谔方程预测了许多世界的存在,那就顺其自然吧。)”和最后一段中的“Could a more expansive view of the universe itself be the next breakthrough? As Siegfried puts it: “Every time in the past that we’ve thought, ‘We’ve got it; this is what the whole universe is’—the people who’ve said, ‘Maybe there’s more than one of those’ have always turned out to be right.”(正如齐格弗里德所说:“在过去,每当我们想,‘我们明白了;这就是整个宇宙的样子’——那些说‘也许不止一个’的人总是被证明是对的。”)”
Play is so much more than just a way to kill the time. Behind every game and puzzle lies a powerful force shaping a child’s development. ____16____ Dive in, and you’ll discover the science behind it.
When children engage in play, they do more than just have fun. They’re actively constructing their brains. . Neural pathways (神经通络), those complex networks responsible for thought, learning, and emotion, are solidified during these leisure activities. Much like constructing a home requires more than just bricks, it’s about laying a strong foundation. For the maturing brain, play is that vital foundation. ____17____ These connections don’t just serve immediate childlike wonder; they lay the groundwork for future cognitive and emotional adaptability.
Beyond cognitive and emotional development, leisure activities are crucial in securing a child’s physical health and coordination (协调性). Whether it’s running or jumping rope, these actions develop a child’s fine motor skills. Such physical engagements push children to be more aware of their body movements and surroundings. ____18____ Through play, kids develop a symbiotic (共生的) relationship between mind and body.
In the dynamic ecosystem of a child’s growth, leisure activities weave in threads of academic enhancement without the traditional pressures of formal education. ____19____ Beyond the fun, kids are absorbing lessons in logic, pattern recognition, and critical thinking. Similarly, engaging in board games or interactive storytelling sessions introduces them to fundamental math, language, and strategy concepts in a relaxed atmosphere. This stress-free combination of play and learning allows kids to develop academically without realizing they’re on an educational journey.
Play is more than just a leisure activity for kids. It’s an essential tool that helps better brain development, physical health and so much more. ____20____
A. But why, exactly, is play so vital for kids?
B. And how, precisely, do you dive in games and puzzles?
C. The diversity of play equips the brain with neural connections.
D. Take, for instance, the seemingly simple act of assembling a puzzle.
E. Therefore, kids who play more will deal with the difficulties better in the future.
F. The constant feedback creates a rich environment for enhancing physical capabilities.
G. By understanding it, you can provide your child with the best foundation for a bright future.
【答案】16. A 17. C 18. F 19. D 20. G

【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了游戏对孩子大脑所产生的影响。
【16题详解】
根据前文“Play is so much more than just a way to kill the time. Behind every game and puzzle lies a powerful force shaping a child’s development.(玩耍不仅仅是一种消磨时间的方式。 故选A项。
【17题详解】
根据前文“For the maturing brain, play is that vital foundation.(对于成熟的大脑来说,玩耍是至关重要的基础)”以及后文“These connections don’t just serve immediate childlike wonder; they lay the groundwork for future cognitive and emotional adaptability.(这些联系不仅仅是为了满足孩子们的好奇心;它们为未来的认知和情感适应性奠定了基础)”可知,空前讲述对于发育中的大脑来说,玩耍是至关重要的基础,空后讲述这些联系不仅仅是为了满足孩子们的好奇心,也奠定了认知和情感适应性的基础。故设空处应将“游戏,脑发育,联系”结合在一起,所以C项“The diversity of play equips the brain with neural connections.(游戏的多样性为大脑提供了神经连接)”符合文意,承上启下,其中connections和下文为同词复现。故选C项。
【18题详解】
根据前文“Beyond cognitive and emotional development, leisure activities are crucial in securing a child’s physical health and coordination (协调性). Whether it’s running or jumping rope, these actions develop a child’s fine motor skills. My Best Examination
One day, while at work in a coal-mine in Malden, I happened to overhear two miners talking about a great school for poor people in Virginia. It was Hampton Institute. The school was established to provide opportunities for poor but worthy students who could work out all or a part of the cost of board, and at the same time be taught some trade or industry.
I was on fire constantly with one ambition, and that was to go to school. I decided at once to go to that school. Finally the great day came and I started for Hampton. I had only a small, cheap bag that contained what few articles of clothing I could get. The distance from Malden to Hampton is about five hundred miles. I had not been away from home many hours before it began to grow painfully evident that I did not have enough money to pay my fare (路费) to Hampton.
By walking and begging rides in some way, I finally reached the grounds of the Hampton Institute after a number of days, tired and dirty. As soon as possible after reaching, I presented myself before the head teacher for assignment to a class. Having been so long without proper food, a bath, and change of clothing, I was like a worthless loafer (游荡者).
I did not, of course, make a very favourable impression upon her, and I could see at once that there were doubts in her mind about the wisdom of admitting me as a student. I tried to impress her in all the ways I could with my worthiness. How I wished that I could get a chance to show what was in me.
After some time, the head teacher said to me, “The adjoining (隔壁的) classroom needs sweeping. Take the broom and sweep it.”

【答案】范文
It occurred to me at once that here was my chance. Never did I receive an order with more delight. I knew I could sweep, for my parents thoroughly taught me how to do that when I was young. I swept the room three times. Then I got a dusting-cloth and I dusted it four times. All the woodwork around the walls, every bench, table and desk, I went over four times with my dusting-cloth, I had the feeling that in a large measure my future depended upon the impression I made upon the teacher in the cleaning of that room. When I was through, I reported to her.
The head teacher went into the room and inspected the floor and closets. Then she took her handkerchief and rubbed it on the woodwork about the walls, and over the table and benches. When she was unable to find one bit of dirt on the floor, or a particle of dust on any of the furniture, she quietly remarked, “I guess you will do to enter this institution.” I was one of the happiest souls on earth. The sweeping of that room was my college examination! I have passed several examinations since then, but I have always felt that this was the best one I had ever passed.

Kristin Schell is the founder of The Turquoise Table a movement of ordinary people who want to create community right in their own front yards.
They played games did crafts and ate snacks.
C
D
If you live on this planet there’s a decent chance you’ve seen the classic Star TrekEpisode, in which captain Kirk and several members find themselves in what appears to be another universe.
15. What might be the author’s attitude toward the multiverse?
A. Doubtful. B. Dismissive. C. Unclear. D. Approving.
