Multidisciplinary Geodesign Workshop for Global Climate Change Mitigation()
This 2-day workshop (January 21 and January 23)will expose participants from all
schools, departments and disciplines at Harvard to an emergent data-driven geodesign model for
郑
designing at the largest size imaginable-global-to identify practicable strategies to substan-
tially reduce greenhouse gases, the single most important global action available for fighting
against global warming.
Participants will be assigned to represent national "climate-regions"covering the entire
h
globe(not necessarily their own, though local knowledge will help),focusing on a menu of pos-
sible climate mitigation project types.Based on initial proposed actions produced in Day 1,off-
興
輛
site computer simulations()will be run to predict likely outcomes. In Day 2,negotiation
techniques will be used to find improvements, resulting in a global strategic plan for carbon re-
duction.
No special prior experience is required.Geographic, cultural and disciplinary diversity is de-
sired, and basic computer skills should suffice().A willingness to think big and to engage
in holistic()systems thinking will help.We seek participants from as many countries and
阳
climate regions as possible.

Writing is a bug,and I caught it very early on in life. When my parents cleared their stor-
age room out recently, they found The Story Book Special I wrote when I was nine years old.
I couldn't believe my imagination was so wild.Reading it reminded me of how special words had
been to me at an early age. It's a feeling that has lasted, through my school years and far,far
beyond.
At the age of 18,I joined Kent Police and spent twelve years living every little boy's dream
of driving cars fast and playing cops and robbers for real. It's safe to say it's a career I'd still be
in now,if not for what happened when I was 28.
I was a fit man when, unexpectedly,I was diagnosed with an incurable heart disease. It's
the disease you hear of when a sportsperson suddenly drops dead on the field of play. But,you
know what,it's one of the best things to have happened to me.
When this happened,I made a to-do list.At the top of it was to write a full-length,"proper"
book.I wrote the first draft of my first novel in three months and loved every minute of the
process.I knew this was what I wanted to do,more than anything, and getting into publishing
can't be that hard...right?Wrong!
As every author knows, brick walls are everywhere, and when you knock one down,
there's another one.After a few false starts,I coupled with my wonderful agent,Nicky.We
spent eight solid months editing and sent the manuscript off.Once again,we received some
dressed-up "no's",until Rachel,an editor I'd really wanted to work with,read it.Her vision
for the book is exactly consistent with mine!
Now my first novel is optioned for television, and is in the hands of a wonderful production
team both here in London, and in Australia where it will be filmed.

In Jakarta, apart from the narrow, unpaved road, the two-meter-high concrete coastal wall
is the only thing that separates Susan's small restaurant from the sea.Her family depends on
that wall.Growing up here,Susan used to play on the beach in front of her house. But by the
2000s the beach had disappeared, and the sea frequently flooded the neighborhood.
In 2002,the government built the coastal wall,to give the residents peace of mind and
time-a respite()from the steady sinking of the land under the city and the steady rising of
the sea.But just five years later,in 2007,the wall proved no match for the worst floods in
Jakarta's modern history.
Jakarta is now sinking at a truly alarming rate-a rate that varies around the city but is up
to 11 inches a year in the northern areas.About 40 percent of Jakarta is below sea level.By com-
parison, climate change is raising sea level by only less than an inch a year. But sinking land and
rising sea both point toward the same outcome:regular flooding in Jakarta."Jakarta is the cen-
ter of administration, economy, culture, and entertainment.Over the years Jakarta has grown
into a big city with no environmental support system,"says Andy,a lecturer at the University
of Indonesia.Ultimately that's why it is sinking today.
The situation is one reason the government announced that the nation's capital would be
moved away to a new city to be built on Borneo, which is now forest. But local communities
aren't so happy with the plan. They fear the project would destroy their land, forest, and liveli-
hoods. In Jakarta,on the other hand, those who welcome the decision arguing that it will ease
Jakarta's burdens of crowding and pollution.
But as the government leaves the sinking capital, what is to become of the 10 million people
like Susan who still live there?
·47·

A.To prevent the land from sinking.
B.To keep the residents from floods.
C.To stop the steady rising of the sea.
D.To restore the beach for the residents.
9.What can we learn about the floods from Paragraph 3?
A.The floods were caused by nature and humans.
B.Climate change is the primary cause of the floods.
C.The rise of the sea level is the outcome of regular flooding.
D.The economic development has a great impact on the floods.
10.What can be learned from the passage about Jakarta?
A.It is no longer the nation's capital now.
B.It is an underdeveloped city with a large population
C.Its residents suffer a lot from the plan of the government.
D.Its measures to protect the environment are far from satisfactory.
11.What is the author's attitude to the plan of the government?
A.Intolerant.
B.Supportive.
C.Worried.
D.Indifferent.

This spring, half the country will be able to consider growing plants they couldn't have be-
fore.In November,the U.S.Department of Agriculture (USDA)changed its Plant Hardiness
Zone Map for the first time since 2012.The map showed an average increase of around 1.4 C
across the lower 48 states.
People in Arkansas can now think about planting mandarin oranges in their gardens.New
Yorkers might steer clear of planting native sugar maples()that prefer a cooler tempera-
ture. We're used to tracking climate change through a series of disasters, but the hidden signs of
it have been in our backyards all along.
Living by Walden Pond, likely the most famous pond in the U.S.,for about two years in
the mid-19th century,Henry David Thoreau penned the book "Walden"based on his experi-
ences. He noted when various types of bushes and trees shot, when wildflowers flowered, and
the arrival dates of migratory bird.Scientists think highly of Thoreau's detailed records,as by
comparing his detailed observations in "Walden"with modern flowering times, they found
plants now shoot an average of 18 days earlier, having a huge influence on young insects and mi-
gratory birds.
The updated planting zones bring both opportunities and challenges for gardeners who can
experiment with new types of plants but might find that prized trees or bushes aren't doing as
well as they were a decade or two ago.If native sugar maples no longer do well in New York
State, what does that mean for the ecosystem that has come to rely on them?
The most uncomfortable thing about the changes to the USDA growing zones is that they
are based on information from the last 30 years. We live in an age of solastalgia(),a term
that refers to missing an environment that no longer exists. The time to notice and value the en-
vironment around us is now.The only thing sadder than missing something that's gone away is
not realizing that so much has already changed.
·48·
12.What does the underlined phrase "steer clear of"in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Avoid.
B.Anticipate.

D.Consider.
13.Why do scientists consider "Walden"important?
A.It is based on native species.
B.It revealed climate patterns.
C.It is of great scientific value.
D.It gave research inspirations.
14.How can we comment on the updated planting zones according to Paragraph 4?
A.Every coin has two sides.
B.All that shines is not gold.
C.Things don't stay the same.
D.Misfortunes never come alone.
15.What does solastalgia remind people to do?
A.Adapt to varying conditions.
B.Mind and love the present world.
C.Fight against the climate change.
D.Notice impacts on an environment.
Many people have the habit of talking aloud to themselves,a phenomenon known as exter-
nal self-talk.Unlike inner speech,the silent mental conversations,external self-talk involves
voicing thoughts clearly.Researchers have identified specific contexts where this behavior tends
to emerge more frequently, prompting inquiries into its psychological mechanisms.16
One prominent factor is social disconnection.Individuals who spend extended periods alone
often use aloud self-talk as a form of companionship.17 For example, children growing up
without siblings(兄弟姐妹)tend to engage in more self-talk than those with siblings. This sug
gests that self-talk serves as a substitute for social interaction when real-life connections are lim-
ited.
Another key driver is the need to navigate stressful situations. When faced with uncertainty
about actions or emotions, people often turn to external self-talk as a coping mechanism.18
Studies indicate that individuals increase self-talk when experiencing anxiety.By verbalizing
challenges, they can organize their thoughts and process difficult experiences more effectively.
Age also plays a role in the occurrence of external self-talk.19 Young children fre-
quently talk aloud while learning social roles.Conversely, the elderly may exhibit more self-
talk, potentially due to memory support needs or reduced self-control.This age-related pattern
highlights how self-talk adapts to different life stages and cognitive demands.
Far from being abnormal, external self-talk can be surprisingly beneficial.20 In one
experiment, basketball players who verbally coached themselves through moves -using en-
couraging or instructional phrases-showed significant performance improvements.
A.This behavior is particularly noticeable in those living lone lifestyles.
B.Both children and the elderly display distinct patterns of external self-talk.
C.It can enhance task performance by providing clear guidance or motivation.
D.They assume that this arises from a basic human need for social engagement.
E.However, the exact relationship between self-talk and mental health remains debated.
F.The act of verbalizing thoughts helps individuals clarify uncertainties and manage stress.
G.The link between inner self-talk and age becomes clear when examining developmental sta-
ges.

for the moment in which"you felt the best;you felt that you had the world in the palm of your
hand.Some described amazing awards;others described winning a tournament.My answer,
however, invited giggles and hesitant smiles. Why?Because I felt the best when I first learned
how to ride my bike at thirteen.I didn't mind my classmates'stares and mockery, because I
knew there was more to the story.
My elder sister and I shared a typical sisterly relationship:we couldn't stand each other.I
was an annoyance to her.Any sort of conversation we had usually ended up fighting.Gradually,
I started to learn to be totally indifferent;perhaps the silent treatment would get more approv-
al.I was wrong. We soon fell into a sad pattern.I avoided her,and she ignored me.Deep inside,
it hurt.So that was how it was between us.She was only a sister in name.I truly believed that

we would forever be apart, two housemates without conversation, two strangers without
warmth.
I still remember the day I learned to ride a bike.I had received the bike that Christmas,
which was great, until I realized that I had no idea how to ride it.My mom had long abandoned
any attempt to teach me.I had proven to be a frustrating student.I took it upon myself to learn,
a little bit each day.It was no different.I was coming to the end of my daily one-hour torture(

I guess that was what caused my sister to come out-
side.At first,I was skeptical and tense,as I assumed
that she would begin to tease me or at least burst out
laughing.However,she did neither.I hunched my
shoulders forward and turned my face away, tears trick-
ling down my cheeks. She gently picked my bike up,ut-
tering in a reassuring tone,"I can teach you how to
ride."Dumbstruck,I raised my head and stared at her
in stunned silence.Next hours saw my sister steadily
hold my bike when my feel faltered. She never once let
me fall, patiently teaching me how to ride a bike.
"I made it,"I shouted with excitement.A ripple of
happiness bubbled up in my heart.I turned around,
beaming a warm smile at my sister. She gave me an ap-
proving nod, eyes gleaming with amusement. That was
the day I had a taste of what real sisterly intimacy could
be like.For three hours,three wonderful,blissful
hours,we learned to ride a bike, which was the perfect

harmony I had longed for.We still occasionally have our
random spats and bitter rivalries, but since that day,it
has been easier to get along because I know my sister
will be there for me when I need her.

quality,meaningful photographs that illustrate the
power of nature and the urgent need to protect our
根据Judging Criteria部分“The
WMO council will have the final say on the photos for
inclusion in the calendar based on the social media
votes and the geographical balance.(世界气象组织理
根据How to enter部分“Photogra
phers may submit multiple entries, but only one pho-
to can be included in the final calendar.(摄影师可以
Sailcargo
根据文章第二段“Made largely of
wood,Ceiba combines both very old and very new
technology:sailing masts stand alongside solar pan-
els,a uniquely designed electric engine and batteries.
Once on the water, she will be capable of crossing
oceans entirely without the use of fossil fuels, which
根据文章第三段“‘Really,the only
limit on how long she can stay at sea is water and food
on board for the crew.’(‘真的,她能在海上停留多久
Ceiba
that we don't have great ideas. The problem that we
have is that fossil fuels are still too cheap. And we
don't have the rules to force people to take up the new
根据文章第二段“Ceiba is the first
ship built by Sailcargo,a company trying to prove that
zero-carbon shipping is possible,and commercially
When it comes to promoting this
kind of boat,it has to be said that Ceiba is small for a
cargo ship-tiny in fact. She will carry around nine
standard shipping containers. She is also relatively
slow.Being a world-first,there are some aspects of
Ceiba's design that have yet to be proven at sea.
Ceiba

根据第三段“But there's an inter-
esting tidbit related to the Pomodoro technique, and
that is that:when you just think about something
that you don't like very much,it stimulates a part of
the brain that experiences pain. And so the brain nat-
urally enough shifts its attention to something else,
like Facebook or Twitter or something like that."
