Last summer, my family’s vacation was very different. Instead of going to a beautiful beach or a famous city, we helped on a small farm in the countryside. At the start, I thought it would be boring and hard work.
We arrived on a sunny Monday. Each day, we got up early when the sun rose. In the mornings, we fed the chickens and collected their warm eggs. After that, we would move to the vegetable garden. We took out the bad plants from the garden and picked tomatoes and carrots. In the afternoons, we kept on picking what was ready—not just tomatoes and carrots, but also cucumbers and beans. At first, this was the hardest part for me. I was so tired that I really missed my comfortable room. However, something changed after a few days. I started to enjoy the physical work. The farmer not only taught me how to care for the soil (土壤) but also explained why it was so important. As the days passed, I began to understand that growing food wasn’t just about planting seeds (种子), but it was a long process that required (需要) daily attention and a lot of effort (努力).
When the vacation ended, I didn’t just have photos. Because I saw how the farmer worked hard every day. I learned many new things from him and felt grateful for farmers and nature. It was truly a vacation I would never forget.

Tanghulu is a traditional delicious Chinese snack with centuries of history. Over 800 years ago, an emperor’s wife fell seriously ill. Doctors tried many medicines, but nothing helped. Finally, a village doctor got an idea of cooking hawthorn berries (山楂) with sugar and then ate them before meals. Soon, she got better. Then people started making this sweet-and-sour treat. Later, tanghulu became a favorite snack.
Do you know how to make tanghulu? Here are the steps to make it:
·Wash some fresh hawthorns carefully.
·Put the hawthorns on a stick.
·Heat sugar and water in a pot until the sugar melts (融化) and turns golden.
·Dip (蘸) the hawthorns into the hot syrup (糖浆) quickly.
·Place the tanghulu on a plate to cool.
Tanghulu is not just a popular snack, it carries a lot. The red color is a symbol of good luck and happiness. The mix of sweet and sour tastes is like life itself: sometimes happy, sometimes challenging, but always full of hope. In old times, when people made it, they showed love for the family. Tanghulu is also a gift of love. Parents give it to children, friends exchange it during celebrations, and couples enjoy it as a sweet promise.
Nowadays, we have new tastes like strawberry, orange, tomato and grape. But the hawthorn taste is still the most important because it connects us to the past. When we share tanghulu, we also share a piece of Chinese culture. It’s a seed, and we are the gardeners.
9. People made tanghulu for the first time to ________.
A. celebrate the festivals B. use as a gift for friends
C. cure an emperor’s wife D. sell as a snack in winter
10. Which step is the third one to make tanghulu?
A. Make the sugar syrup. B. Boil the water.
C. Wash the hawthorns. D. Cover the pot.
11. What does the writer introduce about tanghulu in Paragraph 3?
A. Nice tastes. B. Special meanings.
C. Long history. D. Cool recipe.
12. Why is the hawthorn taste the most important?
A. Because it’s a tradition of finding joy. B. Because it brings hope to our life.
C. Because it’s our connection to the past. D. Because it helps to treat illnesses.

They have beautiful reddish-brown (红褐色) fur, round faces, and long, bushy (毛茸茸的) tails. Red pandas live in the mountains of southern Asia. They love cool forests with lots of bamboo, because bamboo is their favorite food. Sometimes they also eat fruit, insects, or bird eggs. Most of the time, they sleep in tree holes during the day and look for food in the morning or evening.
Red pandas are lovely, but they are in danger. According to wildlife experts, there are only about 10,000 red pandas left in the wild. Red pandas are endangered for several reasons. The main one is that their homes are disappearing. Humans are cutting down forests for farms or buildings. What’s more, some people hunt red pandas. They use the pandas’ beautiful fur to make clothes or hats.
Luckily, people are trying to save red pandas. Now there are many protected areas. But red pandas still need more help. To draw more public attention to them, people set up International Red Panda Day. It falls on the third Saturday of September every year.
