Can plants eat people? Probably not, but there are many plants that eat meat. Some of them are big, and they can eat small animals. One famous meat-eating plant is the Venus flytrap (捕蝇草).
The Venus flytrap is a very strange plant. It grows in dry parts of the United States. Its leaves are like the pages of a book. They can open and close very fast. Inside the leaves, there are three small hairs. If a fly touches one of the hairs, the leaves will close swiftly. The fly cannot get out. In about half an hour the leaves press the fly until it is dead. Then, the plant covers the fly. Slowly, the plant eats the fly.
Why do plants do it? Most plants get what they need from the sun, the air and the ground. In some places, the ground is very poor. It doesn’t have all these important things, but animal meat has a lot of these important things. So some plants eat meat to get what they need. Let’s hope that some of the bigger plants don’t get the same idea!
5. The Venus flytrap grows in ________.
A. most parts of the world B. some parts of Africa
C. dry parts of the United States D. wet parts of England
6. What does the underlined word “swiftly” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. quickly B. slowly C. softly D. carefully
7. Why do some plants eat animal meat?
A. They need to get water from animal meat.
B. They can’t get anything from the sun or the air.
C. They want to keep the ground from being poor.
D. They need the important things from animal meat.
8. What can we infer from the last sentence of the passage?
A. The writer wants to stop people from growing bigger plants.
B. The writer hopes bigger plants can grow better in poor ground.
C. The writer thinks bigger plants are not good for the environment.
D. The writer is afraid that bigger meat-eating plants may eat people.
【答案】5. C 6. A 7. D 8. D

【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据“Can plants eat people? Probably not”可知,植物会吃人吗,大概率不会,以及前文对食肉植物的介绍,这里的the same idea指靠食肉获取生长所需物质,因此作者担心体型更大的植物若也进化出食肉特性,可能会对人类构成威胁,因此推断出作者害怕大型食肉植物可能吃人。故选D。

When people have different opinions or needs, conflicts (冲突) may happen. Naomi Drew, the writer of The Kids’ Guide to Working Out Conflicts: How to Keep Cool, Stay Safe, and Get Along, gives kids some useful advice on getting on with friends.
Q1: A friend of mine often hangs out with our friends, but he has never invited me. What can I do?
A1: If a friend does something you don’t like don’t be afraid to talk to him. Don’t be angry with him. Try to make him understand your feelings so that you can work through it together.
Q2: My friend is rude (无礼的) to other people. She said if I didn’t like her, she would stop being my friend.
A2: Never “sell out” just to follow one friend. Do what you believe is right, and you can even find some new friends.
Q3: My friend and I argue a lot. Although we’ll be friends again soon, I don’t like it. What should I do?
A3: “Winning an argument” isn’t always worth (值得) it. Next time when you argue, let your friend “win” if the thing is not important to you. If you give in (让步) a little, so may your friend. And remember, probably your friend isn’t wrong. He or she just sees things differently.

You are standing in the kitchen and a voice says, “Add a little more salt to that soup.” Yes, it’s always nice to have someone help you when you’re cooking. But this voice is not from a man. You are alone!
Then where does it come from? Is it from a ghost? No, this isn’t a ghost kitchen—it’s the kitchen of the future.
Scientists are working to improve everything in the kitchen, from fridges to tables, and even the ways we cook. They are making a system. It will help a person cook a meal. You won’t need cookbooks. You can hear how to cook food.
The fridge of the smart kitchen has a scanner (扫描器). It looks at the foods in the fridge. It will order more milk from the store when your milk has gone bad or there is no more in the fridge. The gloves will test the temperature of everything they touch and say, “Need to cook longer” or “Hot and ready to eat”. If you leave them on the stove by mistake, they’ll say, “Fire!” Even the knives and spoons will speak. For example, if your food is bad, the knives and spoons will tell you not to eat it.
The future kitchen may look wonderful, but it’s not cheap. The multimedia (多媒体的) fridge costs about 8,000 dollars. So even though high-tech kitchens are no longer a dream, not everyone can afford one.
13. How does the system in the future kitchen help people cook?
A. It cleans the kitchen after cooking.
B. It cooks the meal instead of people.
C. It tells people how to cook by voice.

A. It no longer needs written recipes. B. It does not use any electricity.

Putting down everything, she watched the advertisement for a new toy carefully. She did not notice the smoke coming from the iron until she heard our mother shouting.

【答案】One possible version:
How to Communicate with Our Parents
As we grow older, we’ll find it’s not easy to communicate with our parents openly. So what should we do when communicating with them? Here are some of my ideas.
First, we can make a list of things we disagree with our parents about. It helps us understand our differences clearly. Second, if we have disagreements, try not to get too angry. Anger can only make things worse, not solve problems. Third, talk with them more often. We can share our school stories or small hobbies with them every day. Last, learn how to really listen. When parents speak, don’t cut them off. Listen carefully and try to know their thoughts.
Doing these things will help us communicate better with our parents.

No this isn’t a ghost kitchen—it’s the kitchen of the future.
D. It gives written recipes in cookbooks.
14. How is the future kitchen different from a kitchen today?
A. It no longer needs written recipes. B. It does not use any electricity.
C. It uses a special kind of water. D. It is only for professional cooks.
15. What will the scanner in the smart fridge do if it finds the milk is bad?
A. It will tell people to throw the milk away.
B. It will order new milk from the store.
C. It will test the milk’s temperature.
D. It will stop people from opening the fridge.
16. From the passage we know that ________.
A. nobody can buy such a fridge
B. everybody can buy such a fridge

Putting down everything, she watched the advertisement for a new toy carefully. She did not notice the smoke coming from the iron until she heard our mother shouting.
