A huge crowd has gathered to watch
China's new scientific research ship enter the
water for the first time. This ship, equipped
with on-board labs and the latest scientific kit,
will eventually explore the world's oceans.
But it is also going to help China plunge be-
neath the waves:it will serve as a launch-pad
for submarines that can dive to the deepest
parts of the ocean."Humans know much less
about the deep oceans than we know about the
surface of the Moon and Mars. That's why I
want to develop the facility for ocean scien-
tists to reach the deep seas,"says Prof.Cui
Weicheng.
He is the dean of deep sea science at
Shanghai Ocean University but he has also set
up a private company called Rainbow Fish,
81
which built the new research ship and is busy
developing submersibles.One of its unmanned
subs reached a depth of 4,000 m (13,000 ft)
in its most recent trial. But Rainbow Fish's
ultimate goal is manned exploration and it
plans to take humans to the very bottom of the
ocean the Mariana Trench,in the Pacific,at a
depth of nearly 11,000 m (36,000 ft).He
shows me around a life-size model of the sub-
marine and explains that there is room inside
for a crew of three, who will be protected by a
thick metal sphere."At the moment,we are in
the design stage,so we are testing several ex-
tremely high-strength materials for it."It will
have to bear immense pressures from the
crushing weight of water above. If there are
any weaknesses,the submarine will implode.
The deepest ocean is a place few people have
ever experienced first-hand.The first dive to
the Mariana Trench was carried out in 1960
by US Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh and Swiss
engineer Jacques Picard.Their vessel,the
Bathyscaphe Trieste, creaked and groaned as it
made the descent, taking nearly five hours.
The only other manned expedition was
carried out by Hollywood director James Cam-
eron, who took a solo plunge in a bright green
submarine in 2012.Rainbow Fish wants its
sub to be next. The team insists its venture isn't
about politics and that it is looking to collabo-
rate with American,Russian and European sci-
entists.It is,though,a commercial operation.
The company plans to charge people to use its
82
research ship and submarines, and is targeting
three groups,says managing director Dr.Wu
Xin."The first is definitely the scientists who
are interested in studying deep-sea science and
technology.The second group is offshore
companies and oil companies. The last one is
tourists and adventurers who]want to go
down themselves to have a look at what's go-
ing on there,"he says. This kind of entrepren-
eurial approach may be a new model for sci-
ence in China.Deep-sea research is a difficult,
high-risk activity-and much of the ocean re-
mains unexplored. But Cui,who hopes to be
the first Chinese person to reach the Mariana
Trench, believes that China could be the na-
tion to truly open up this final frontier.
24.What function does the new scientific re-
search ship serve?
A.As a deep-sea facility for tourist adven-
tures.
B.As a supply ship for scientific explo-
rations.
C.As a station for observing giant squid.
D.As a launch-pad for submarines.
25.What is Prof.Cui Weicheng currently do-
ing?
A.Testing high-strength materials for buil-
ding submarines.
B.Designing a thick metal sphere for bea-
ring space pressure.
C.Charting the Mariana Trench in the
western Pacific Ocean.
D.Making plans for his dive to the bottom
of the Mariana Trench.
26.What does "this kind of entrepreneurial
approach"in the last paragraph mean?
A.Prof.Cui doesn't rely on government
funding.Instead he runs a for-profit
business.
B.Prof.Cui is bold in his submarine de-
sign.
C.Prof.Cui,who started the company,is
a professor-turned entrepreneur.
D.Prof.Cui is the first to offer his ship
for tourists.
27.Which of the following might be the best
title of this passage?
A.Deep-sea Science and Technology
B.Ocean Exploration
C.Race to the Deep
D.The Rising of Rainbow Fish

A recent study from the Food and Mood
Centre at Deakin University in Australia has
cast light on an alternative approach to man-
aging mild to moderate depression. The re-
search suggests that lifestyle therapy,which
includes nutritional consulting and regular
physical activity, can be as effective as tradi-
tional psychotherapy(心理疗法)in reducing
depressive symptoms.
In this study,182 individuals diagnosed
with non-severe depression were randomly as-
signed to either lifestyle therapy or cognitive
behavioral therapy (CBT).The lifestyle the-
rapy group received guidance from a dietitian

and an exercise physiologist.These profes-
sionals provided evidence-based advice on im-
proving nutrition,particularly through a mod-
ified Mediterranean(地中海)diet,and in-
cluding regular physical exercise into daily
routine.Meanwhile,the CBT group was led
by psychologists who taught strategies to
manage negative thoughts and behaviors,and
were provided with workbooks and self-help
tools.
Both therapies were structured to match
in frequency,duration,environment,and group
size,ensuring a fair comparison.The results
were promising:the lifestyle therapy group re-
ported a 42%reduction in depression symp-
toms, whereas those who had traditional psy-
chotherapy experienced a 37%reduction.
Although the study's sample size was
small, indicating the need for further research,
it underlines the importance of lifestyle changes
in medicine. The researchers point out that
while lifestyle changes are the cornerstone of
other areas of medicine, such as heart disease
and diabetes, they have traditionally been seen
as“add-on”to mental health care.The study's
findings suggest that this mindset may need to
shift.
Importantly,the research does not say
that lifestyle changes should replace profes-
sional mental health care.Instead,it recom-
mends a comprehensive approach where both
lifestyle therapy and traditional psychotherapy
are available options. This would allow indi-

viduals to access the care that best suits their
needs,potentially offering more effective
treatment for those fighting with mild to mod-
erate depression.
28.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The significance of the research.
B.The consequence of the research.
C.The performance of different subjects.
D.The process of conducting the research
29.What does the underlined word "corner-
stone"in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.A side factor.
B.An optional part.
C.A fundamental element.
D.A controversial method.
30.What is the suggestion of the research?
A.Improve traditional psychotherapy.
B.Include lifestyle changes as an option.
C.Stick to the Mediterranean diet strictly.
D.Replace psychotherapy with lifestyle
changes.
31.In which column of a magazine might this
text be found?
A.Fitness routines.

Science should guide policy,but caution
is needed when technologies like CRISPR
have the potential to exclude rather than assist
people to live their lives.
CRISPR can be used to treat disease.Yet
84
the far-reaching,more worrying promise of
this technology-one about which scientists
seem at once excited and cautious-lies in its
ability to eliminate from the gene pool what
medical science identifies as faulty or abnor-
mal genes that cause difference in individual
people.Certainly,goes the logic of CRISPR's
promise, the goal of ridding future generations
of terrible diseases that cause suffering and
death and exhaust resources, seems an unques-
tionable enterprise.
This logic is consistent with wider soci-
etal views. The idea that ridding society of
genetic differences that count as defect is an
undeniable "good"continues to be pervasive.
Editing out a gene-linked condition,supporters
may argue,is different from editing out a per-
son,and curing disease is a good thing.But
our genetic conditions are not simply entities
that can be clipped away from us and our ge-
netic conditions form a fundamental part of
who we are
Using genome manipulation tools and
performing genetic selection is equal to a new
form of eugenic thinking grounded in what the
communications studies scholar James L.
Chemey calls“common sense”ableism,abe-
lief system that allows people to simultane-
ously deny any commitment to distasteful eu-
genic principles while also holding them up.
Ultimately,“common sense”ableism embod-.
ies a similar goal of cleansing unacceptable
human variations that the campaigns to elimi-
nate the supposedly inferior have held in the
past.
People with“bad”genes shouldn'tbe
edited out of existence in some version of a
utopian future.Evaluating the quality of life of
another person is morally questionable in a
society based on the concept that all people
are of equal value regardless of their individu-
al differences.
Expanding diversity in all its forms,in-
cluding disability,strengthens the human com-
munity ethically and biologically because it
opens the public and private sphere to a vari-
ety of perspectives, experiences and ideas to
live together with mutual flourishing.
Genome editing is powerful in reshaping
medical treatments, but it can also be harmful
by editing out the kinds of people that medical
science, and the society it has shaped,catego-
rize as diseased or genetically contaminated-
people who are understood as having bad
genes. We should be reminded that bad genes
don't necessarily lead to bad lives, just as
good genes don't necessarily lead to good
lives. If CRISPR is put to use to eliminate
rather than to treat genetic difference,we as a
society would essentially instrumentalize this
moralistic and reductionist assumption.
32.According to the passage, which of the
following best describes the author's view
on the use of CRISPR to eliminate genetic
defects?
A.The author fully supports the use of
Final test(②)o
CRISPR for the betterment of human
health.
B.The author is concerned about the po-
tential misuse of CRISPR to exclude
individuals with genetic differences.
C.The author believes that CRISPR should
only be used for treating severe dis-
eases with clear genetic causes.
D.The author argues that CRISPR tech-
nology is inherently flawed and should
not be used at all.
33.What can be inferred from the author's
discussion about“common sense”ableism?
A.The author believes that ableism is a
rational approach to genetic diversity.
B.The author suggests that "common
sense"ableism is a subtle form of dis-
crimination that is widely accepted.
C.The author thinks that "common sense"
ableism is a new concept introduced by
James L.Chemey.
D.The author argues that“common sense'”
ableism is a positive development in
the field of genetics.
34.The author employs the term "utopian fu-
ture"to describe a society that edits out
“bad”genes.What is the rhetorical effect
of this term?
A.It evokes a sense of idealism and progr-
ess in genetic engineering.
B.It highlights the potential dangers of
overreaching in genetic modification.
C.It suggests that such a future is impos-
85

sible and therefore not worth discussing.
D.It emphasizes the author's support for a
future free of genetic diseases.
35.What is the main argument of the passage?
A.CRISPR technology has the potential to
cause more harm than good if not used
cautiously.
B.Genetic diversity should be preserved
because it enriches society ethically and
biologically
C.The societal view that genetic defects
should be eliminated is morally and
ethically flawed.
D.The use of CRISPR to treat diseases is
a clear and unquestionable good.

Dear Emily,
Our class held a theme class meeting last Monday. In
this class meeting activity,we discussed the uncivilized be-
haviors on campus.
The meeting started with a presentation showing some
common uncivilized behaviors like littering in the school-
yard, making loud noises in the library and damaging

Paragraph 1:
All of a sudden,a flower painting on the wall caught
Regina's eye.Inspiration struck Regina like a lightning bolt,
her eyes sparkling/twinkling with excitement. She raced
upstairs, grabbed her art supplies and sat down at her desk
with unwavering determination.Looking at the remaining
carnations below the window, she moved her brush. As her
brush moved smoothly across the paper, carnations came
alive,as if smiling merrily at her.At the thought that this
ideal way might work,Regina's face lit up with pleasure.
Day in and day out,Regina made one painting after anoth-
er.The next few days witnessed Regina's continuing efforts
and burst of creativity. She even drew the greedy Butter-
milk and hot-tempered dog.Her paintings mounted,but
Regina's heart was beating faster than a galloping horse as
the fair day was drawing near.
Paragraph 2:
A week later, the fair day, when her parents were load-
ing the car,Regina brought her vivid paintings downstairs.
With butterflies in her stomach, she presented the paintings
to Mama, hoping they could bring her a trace of comfort.
Utterly in disbelief at these lifelike paintings,Mama's lips
curled into a warm smile, tears welling up in her eyes, not
just for the bright colors, but for the sweat Regina put in
bringing the flowers back to life, meaningful and invalu-
able. She gathered Regina into her arms with affection.
"Do you think anyone will buy them?"Regina asked.Ma-
ma smiled,"Oh,sweetie,yes.I'm sure they will."Regi-
na's heart swelled with relief and happiness. The sunlight
then shone upon the family. Not only were the carnations
saved by Regina's striking innovation but their family bond
was also strengthened.

the average length of an episode is about one hour.(100
"Adrienne Herbert has made more than 250 episodes in
which she talks about motivation, trends, career paths and
根据第三段“More than
100 episodes are waiting for you,and the average length of
an episode is about one hour.(l00多集在等着你,平均
以及第四段“A new episode airs
every week and usually lasts for an hour,so it's a perfect
podcast when you need a little bit of a boost to keep going
ever, the soothing voices of the hosts and the engaging
subjects will make you become interested in personal
growth and development, which is essential for you to have
故选A。
it is also going to help China plunge beneath the waves:it
will serve as a launch-pad for submarines that can dive to
the deepest parts of the ocean..(但它也将帮助中国潜人海
the moment,we are in the design stage,so we are testing
several extremely high-strength materials for it.(目前,我
故选A。
"The company plans to charge people to use its research
ship and submarines, and is targeting three groups, says
managing director Dr.Wu Xin.'The first is definitely the
scientists who are interested in studying deep-sea science
and technology. The second group is offshore companies
and oil companies. The last one is tourists and adventurers
who]want to go down themselves to have a look at
what's going on there,.'he says.(该公司董事总经理吴欣
可知后面提到this kind of en-
经营着一家营利性企业)提到了“he runs for a for-profit
138
business(他经营着一家盈利性的公司)”与题意相符。
故选A。
根据第二段“The first
dive to the Mariana Trench was carried out in 1960 by US
Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh and Swiss engineer Jacques
Picard.(I960
"The only other manned expedition was carried out by
Hollywood director James Cameron, who took a solo plunge
in a bright green submarine in 2012.Rainbow Fish wants
its sub to be next.(另一次载人探险是由好莱坞导演詹姆
"But Cui,who hopes to be the first Chinese person to
reach the Mariana Trench, believes that China could be the
nation to truly open up this final frontier.(但Cui希望成
this study,182 individuals diagnosed with non-severe de-
pression were randomly assigned to either lifestyle therapy
or cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).The lifestyle ther-
apy group received guidance from a dietitian and an exer-
Meanwhile,.the CBT group
was led by psychologists who taught strategies to manage
negative thoughts and behaviors, and were provided with
workbooks and self-help tools.(与此同时,CBT组由心
though the study's sample size was small, indicating the
need for further research,it underlines the importance of
as heart diseases and diabetes, they have traditionally been
seen as‘add-on'to mental health care(诸如心脏病和糖
portantly, the research does not say that lifestyle changes
should replace professional mental health care.Instead,it
recommends a comprehensive approach where both lifestyle
therapy and traditional psychotherapy are available options.
The research suggests that lifestyle therapy,.which
includes nutritional consulting and regular physical activity.
can be as effective as traditional psychotherapy(心理疗
ence should guide policy, but caution is needed when tech-
nologies like CRISPR have the potential to exclude rather
than assist people to live their lives.(科学应该指导政策,
CRISPR can be
used to treat disease.Yet the far-reaching,more worrying
promise of this technology-one about which scientists
seem at once excited and cautious-lies in its ability to
eliminate from the gene pool what medical science identi-
fies as faulty or abnormal genes that cause difference inin-
ing genome manipulation tools and performing genetic se-
lection is equal to a new form of eugenic thinking ground-
ed in what the communications studies scholar James L.
Chemey calls common sense'ableism,a belief system
that allows people to simultaneously deny any commitment
to distasteful eugenic principles while also holding them
up.Ultimately,'common sense'ableism embodies a sim-
ilar goal of cleansing unacceptable human variations that
the campaigns to eliminate the supposedly inferior have

CRISPR can be used to treat disease.Yet
the far-reaching,more worrying promise of this technolo-
gy-one about which scientists seem at once excited and
cautious-lies in its ability to eliminate from the gene pool
what medical science identifies as faulty or abnormal genes
that cause difference in individual people.(CRISPR
People with bad'genes shouldn'tbe
edited out of existence in some version of a utopian future.
Evaluating the quality of life of another person is morally
questionable in a society based on the concept that all peo-
ple are of equal value regardless of their individual differ-

找到,该选项中them指代前文的the silver linings。故
选B。
37.G【解析】空前“You have to dig deep and find

clarity about what matters.(你对生活中简单的时刻有了
E。
39.A【解析】空后“The old way of doing things no

Paragraph 1:
As we pushed on,the hike became even tougher. The
steep portions seemed endless, and each step required every
ounce of our strength and concentration.Sweat trickled
down our faces, and our legs felt like jelly. We paused
frequently to catch our breath and steady ourselves on the
uneven ground. In front of us,the jagged rocks and steep
inclines tested our limits.Determined to reach the stone
text,Eric and I encouraged each other,inching forward
slowly but surely
Paragraph 2:
When Walter saw us,he rushed to help us.Seeing our
struggle,he offered his hand to Eric and supported him
over a particularly tricky section."Take it slow,we've got
this,"Walter smiled reassuringly.With his assistance,we
navigated the final stretch of the challenging path. Finally,
we stood before the magnificent stone text, filled with a
sense of accomplishment and gratitude. The view was
breathtaking,and the hike,though arduous,was undoubt-
edly worth every step.
