Dear Lucy,
How is your survey on mobile payment going?I'm
glad I can help with it.
It is generally believed that China is the largest mobile
payment market.Nowhere else is the cashless trend more
obvious than in China. Most of us are used to paying by
scanning QR codes whatever we buy-books,clothes,and
electronic devices,to name a few,which is a glimpse into
the life of most Chinese like me and my family.
With the widespread use of mobile payment,it is the
most convenient and safest way to pay.We rarely need to
carry a wallet or cash at all.Besides, never will we worry
about getting fake notes or having to count change. In
short, mobile payment has greatly changed people's lives in
China.
Personally,I think mobile payment should be encour-
aged.First,it has won over consumers with its conve-
nience.Another advantage is that there are often discounts
if you make mobile payment,as major online payment
platforms are competing to have more consumers use their
service.
I hope my explanation can be of some help to you.
Wish you good luck.
Yours faithfully.

Paragraph 1:
Then we drove to our friends'house, made our way to
the door with our box and bags, and knocked eagerly. When
they opened the door, all four of them were there, clearly
surprised by our visit. As we stepped inside the kitchen,
they found the box,and the parents'jaws nearly dropped.
Handing the items over to them,my mother said,"We just
wanted to bless you."Then my mother hugged the wife
and patted her softly on the shoulder. After that,my mother
naturally helped her friend to put the groceries in place,
smiling at her friend from time to time.
Paragraph 2:
Looking at my mother,I felt proud to be the daughter of
this incredible woman. She was the one who had worked so
hard to pay for the groceries that she didn't hesitate to give
to those in need.Because of her,we were able to share this
amazing experience. What a great example she set for me
that day!Though our intention was to bless our friends,
thirteen years later I still feel like I'm the one who re-
ceived the greatest blessing:one of my most cherished
memories with my mother.

Text 1
M:Have you heard about the wildfires near Los An-
geles?
W:Yes.I read an article about them in the news this
morning. They're spreading very fast due to strong winds.
Many people have been forced to leave their homes.
Text 2
M:We hear so much about the consequences of hav-
ing too much waste plastic around us,don't we?
W:Indeed, not only does it cause a mess, but also
wildlife, particularly ocean animals are at risk when they
eat it.
M:Can't agree more!We should use plastics as little
as possible.
Text 3
M:What were you doing at that time?
W:I was cooking some eggs.Suddenly the table be-
gan to move. The cups fell onto the ground and were bro-
ken.The light went out suddenly.I couldn't help crying.
M:Did you go out at once?
W:No,I couldn't find my way in the darkness.So I
stayed in the bathroom.
Text 4
W:Have you seen the sea?
M:Of course I have!It's all around us.
W:No!I mean, have you seen how dirty the water
is?It looks as if it isn't clean enough to swim here.
Text 5
W:Every year, there are a large number of forest
fires, and the causes are not mysterious.
M:Yeah. Most of them are caused by human activi-
ties, like people throwing away burning cigarettes.
Text 6
W:Are you making preparations for the typhoon?
This year is going to be a bad one.
M:I heard the government expects over 200 million in
damages. How will we recover?I remember supplies were
short when the last typhoon happened.People bought toilet
paper in advance, and they sold it at double the price after-
wards,even though that's illegal.
W:I find it funny that no matter how advanced our
society gets, nature can still cause some real damage.
M:That's why I'm planning to get these plastic sheets
to cover my windows in case they break
Text 7
M:Whoa!Did you just feel that earthquake?
W:Yeah! It felt like a pretty big one!
M:I've never experienced an earthquake before.I
have to admit that I was pretty scared just now.
W:Ah!It was no big deal. That one was tiny com-
pared to some of the ones when I was a kid.
M:What was the biggest one that you remember?
W:Well,in 1989,there was a huge one.I think it
measured 7.1 on the Richter scale.I remember the whole
house shaking.Luckily, there wasn't much damage to our
house, but some of my friends were left homeless.
M:So how big do you think this one was?
W:It's hard to say.Usually if it feels strong,it's at
least a 4.0.
Text 8
W:Kevin,let's go to the beach!
M:The beach?I'm too lazy to go there.Why don't
we go somewhere else,Betty?
W:There is some community work to be done there.
We can clean up the beach. We can collect a lot of plastic
garbage,too
M:What for?It's the government's responsibility.Be-
sides, why should we collect all of the plastic garbage?
W:Kevin, you don't know the harm the plastic does
to the ocean.Plastic can pollute the ocean and,in turn,
harm fish and other ocean life.We should care about what
happens to the ocean.Didn't you hear about that dead
whale's stomach that was full of plastic garbage?
M:Oh,yes.I heard about that. But what will we do
with the plastic garbage we collect?
W:We will take all of the plastic to a company that
can recycle it.
Text 9
W:Good evening!!Our“Person of the Week”is
Kevin Olsen. And we're glad to have Kevin here with us
this evening.Kevin lives and works on the coast of Wash-
ington. His job is unusual in some ways.Part of his work
is to rescue whales, fish, and sea birds when they get into
trouble with pollution.Welcome to the program,Kevin.
M:Glad to be here.
W:What do you do in your job?
M:I spend a lot of my time with sea animals, trying
to learn what things they need in the environment. If we
know what they need,we can help them survive in the fu-
ture.
W:Can you tell us something about the disaster a
short time ago?
M:The whales,small fish,and birds all suffered in
that disaster. The birds had oil on their wings,so they
couldn't fly.And they couldn't eat the fish because the fish
were covered with oil.It took a long time for many people
to work on the cleanup.
W:Why did you choose this job?Is it because you
were concerned about sea animals?
M:Yes,I was always interested in the world of the
ocean and how the plants and animals fit together in their
system.
W:Thank you,Kevin, for coming and talking to us
this evening.
M:My pleasure.

"After that,I couldn't ignore our plastic problem.I shifted
my focus and started to protect our greatest resource, the

son believes all of us can make changes to protect the
Earth and,in turn,those we love.'Whether you're a lawyer.
a gardener,an artist,a teacher or a surfer,we can all help
in our own ways,'she says..(艾莉森相信我们所有人都

like downhill cycling are very dangerous because one would
be going downhill, over rocky or dirt zone, through forests.
even at potentially deadly speeds.A slip up could be your
most people, extreme sports are extreme simply because
they take more skill than what an average person has.An
athlete with skill and training makes an extreme thing be-
come a daily routine, which does not wipe out the danger,
but greatly reduces it.(对大多数人来说,极限运动之所
view parkour, the sports of running, jumping and climbing
under, around and through buildings,as an extreme sport,
while it is more of a life philosophy, where the athlete does
not have to do anything remotely dangerous.Free soloing,
which means climbing a rock or ice face without safety
gear,is absolutely deadly, where one slip means almost
certain death,depending on the height,of course.Skate-
boarding is relatively safe, but if you constantly find
ridiculous places to practice on,like the fence of a bridge,
then things can get very complicated. The extreme part de-
126
故选A。
marize, yes, extreme sports are dangerous, but the danger
depends on the athlete, their choice of sport, direction in
which they take it,as well as the circumstances. Some
things are out of our control, while others we can influence
through exercise and healthier risk choices.(总之,是的,
Are Extreme Sports Really That
nology is particularly beneficial in areas with limited visi-

data showed 'for the first time an area that was integrated
politically and economically, and never seen before in other
places in the Western Hemisphere(西半球),'Carlos
wrote in the study.Using data from the scans, the team iden-
tified more than 1,000 settlements dotting the region. They
were interconnected by 100 miles of causeways that the
Maya likely traveled on foot. They also detected the re-
mains of several large platforms and pyramids, along with
canals and reservoirs used for water collection.(卡洛斯在

the Maya, the Mirador-Calakmul Karst Basin was the
'Goldilocks Zone',"Ross Ensley wrote, partner of Carlos,
a geologist from the Institute for Geological Study of the
Maya Lowlands in Houston,Texas."The Maya settled in
this region because it had the right mix of uplands for set-
tlement and lowlands for agriculture.”(“对玛雅人来说,

survey using lidar(雷达),or light detection and ranging,.
which has been revolutionary for studying historic sites.

Born to an adventure-loving mom and a
National Geographic's photographer dad,
Alison Teal was already exploring the world
as a baby. The family traveled the globe
staying not at five-star hotels but in a six-foot-
wide tent. From cold mountaintops to hot
jungles,they completely involved themselves
in local nature and culture.
Between journeys,they would return
home to a quiet and faraway part of the Big
Island of Hawaii, where they built a solar-
powered oceanfront rest center. The front yard
was the ocean, and Alison's friends were
dolphins. She would dive into the water and
release seaweed.A dolphin would catch it on
its nose or fin and throw it to the next player.
Over the years, the dolphins grew to trust
Alison. They looked for her and came close to
her in the water.
After graduating from university,she
continued her world travels.Her adventurous
childhood and life skills landed her a spot in
the reality show Naked and Afraid,in which
she and her partner had to live on an
48
unwelcoming island for 21 days.Alison's deep
knowledge of how to live in a wilderness
saved the pair, but what shocked her was the
amount of trash washed upon the shore.
"After that,I couldn't ignore our plastic
problem.I shifted my focus and started to
protect our greatest resource,the ocean,"says
Alison.Swimming in familiar waters back
home, she also found her dolphin friends were
no longer tossing (seaweed to each other,
but plastic."That was distressing,"she says.
Her book,Alison's Adventures:Your
Passport to the World,is fled with travel tales
and environmental lessons. She also offers free
adventure films to go along with each chapter
on her social media.Alison believes all of us
can make changes to protect the Earth and,in
turn,those we love."Whether you're a
lawyer,a gardener,an artist,a teacher or a
surfer,we can all help in our own ways,"she
says.
24.What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A.Alison Teal had a comfortable life when
she was young.
B.Alison Teal was fond of photography
when she was young.
C.Alison Teal's parents were strict with
her when she was young.
D.Alison Teal led a life close to nature
when she was young.
25.What alarmed Alison Teal during her parti-
cipation in the reality show?
A.The amount of trash washed upon the
shore.
B.The unwelcoming island where they had
to live.
C.The lack of resources in the wilderness.
D.The dangerous situations they encoun-
tered.
26.When did Alison Teal decide to shift her
focus and start protecting the ocean?
A.During a journey with her parents.
B.After her participation in a show.
C.Before her graduation from university.
D.When visiting the Big Island of Hawaii.
27.What's Alison Teal's opinion about protec-
ting the Earth?
A.Everyone can contribute in their own
ways
B.Only certain professions can make a
difference.
C.It is impossible to make any significant
changes.
D.It is the responsibility of governments
and organizations.

through forests,even at potentially deadly
speeds.A slip up could be your downfall.
Nobody who gets into extreme sports
goes with the desire to do harm to themselves.
With that, athletes train for years and years
before they attempt anything extreme. To most
people,extreme sports are extreme simply
because they take more skill than what an
average person has.An athlete with skill and
training makes an extreme thing become a
daily routine, which does not wipe out the
danger,but greatly reduces it.
Even when there is a lot of skill involved,
things might not go the athlete's way,not at
all.Luck and circumstances have a lot to do
with how things develop, whether above 8,000
meters or in a wood,going downhill.In some
places, crossing the street is an extreme sport,
considering how wild traffic can get.
Some view parkour, the sports of running,
jumping and climbing under,around and
through buildings,as an extreme sport,while
it is more of a life philosophy, where the
athlete does not have to do anything remotely
dangerous.Free soloing,which means climbing
a rock or ice face without safety gear,is
absolutely deadly,where one slip means
almost certain death, depending on the height,
of course.Skateboarding is relatively safe,but
if you constantly find ridiculous places to
practice on,like the fence of a bridge,then
49

things can get very complicated. The extreme
part depends on the athlete.
To summarize,yes,extreme sports are
dangerous, but the danger depends on the
athlete, their choice of sport, direction in which
they take it,as well as the circumstances.
Some things are out of our control, while
others we can influence through exercise and
healthier risk choices.
28.Why is downhill cycling mentioned in
Paragraph 1?
A.To call for attention to extreme sports.
B.To introduce the origin of extreme
sports.
C.To illustrate the danger of extreme
sports.
D.To show the complexity of the extreme
sports.
29.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about
regarding extreme sports?
A.Extreme sports differ from one another.
B.Skill matters a lot in maintaining safety.
C.Athlete's luck is a key factor that
influences safety.
D.Extreme sports are more dangerous than
regular sports.

While conducting a survey by airplane of
northern Guatemala,researchers detected an
ancient Maya site."We can now see the
entire landscape of the Maya region in this
section of Guatemala,"said Carlos Morales-
Aguilar, one of the researchers from the
Department of Geography and the Environment
at the University of Texas.
The findings were the result of the survey
using lidar(雷达),or light detection and
ranging,which has been revolutionary for
studying historic sites. In lidar, lasers are sent
out and the reflected light is used to create
imagery of a landscape. The technology is
particularly beneficial in areas with limited
visibility such as the rainforest in Maya site,
as lasers can enter the heavy tree canopy, the
thick cover formed by the leafy upper
branches in a forest.
The lidar data showed "for the first time
an area that was integrated politically and
economically, and never seen before in other
places in the Western Hemisphere(西半球),”
Carlos wrote in the study.Using data from the
scans, the team identified more than 1,000
settlements dotting the region.They were
interconnected by 100 miles of causeways that
the Maya likely travelled on foot. They also
detected the remains of several large platforms
and pyramids, along with canals and reservoirs
used for water collection.
So what made this region so attractive
that the Maya would want to settle there in the
first place?
"For the Maya,the Mirador-Calakmul
Karst Basin was the‘Goldilocks Zone',”Ross
Ensley wrote,partner of Carlos,a geologist
from the Institute for Geological Study of the
Maya Lowlands in Houston,Texas.The
Maya settled in this region because it had the
right mix of uplands for settlement and
lowlands for agriculture."Uplands lie above
the level where flooding occurs.They
provided a source for limestone, their primary
building material, and dry land to live on.The
lowlands are mostly seasonal swamps(沼泽),
which provided space for wetland agriculture
as well as organic-rich soil for use in terraced
agriculture.
Researchers hope lidar technology will

help them explore sections of Guatemala that
have remained a mystery for centuries.
32.Why did the researchers use lidar in the
survey?
A.It detects a wide range of lasers.
B.It pictures quick and clear imagery.
C.It passes lights through forests easily.
D.It improves the visibility of rainforests.
33.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.Why Maya drew great attention.
B.How Maya people made a living.
C.The research process after surveying the
Maya.
D.The findings through observing the Maya
region.
34.What can we infer about the Maya people
according to Ross Ensley?
A.They transformed the land to survive.
B.They were good at upland agriculture.
C.They preferred to build houses using
limestone.
D.They made a sound choice about where
to settle.
35.Which is the best title for the text?
A.The Perfect Habitat for the Maya People

Different Cultures
The cultures of the East and the West
really distinguish themselves from each other
a lot.36.
The origin of the Eastern culture is mainly
from two countries:China and India. Both of
the two cultures are developed by rivers-the
Yellow River in China and the Indus River in
India.37.
When the two mother rivers gave birth to
the Eastern culture,another famous culture
was brought up on the Mesopotamian plain
Civilization.This civilization later on developed
into the cultures of Ancient Rome and Ancient
Greek.38.
Like the Chinese culture,
the European culture also crossed waters.
When the British settled down in America,
their culture went with them over the Atlantic
Ocean.So the American culture doesn't
distinguish itself from the European culture a lot.
39.
Take the language system
for example.In the East,most languages
belong to the pictographic language while the
Western languages are mostly based on the
Latin system.Other causes like human race
52
differences count as well. But what's more,
due to the far distance and the steep areas
between the East and the West, the two
cultures seldom communicate until recent
centuries. So they grew up totally in their own
ways with almost no interference(干预)
from the other.
The differences are everywhere.40.
But different cultures make the world in
the 21st century more varied. The cultural gap
should not be the obstacle to the civilization of
human beings. It ought to be the motivation
for our going farther.
A.Let us work together to keep a variety of
cultures.
B.One important thing is to learn about the
other's culture.
C.And these two are well-known as the
base of the European culture.
D.This is because the culture systems are
two separate systems on the whole.
E.They helped the two cultures develop for
centuries and form their own styles.
F.They are obvious and affect people's
ways of thinking and their views of the
world.
G.At the same time, some other diff-
erences add to the cultural differences.
