Over the last few decades, technologies have been
constantly springing up,which has greatly changed our life.
It is acknowledged that facial recognition makes it easy for
us to get into stations, the airport and other places. Also,
the high-speed railway shortens the travelling time between
two cities, enabling us to visit more places conveniently. In
addition, mobile payment, allows us to pay for everything
wherever there is a QR code.
As is known to us,technologies are all around us.
Obviously, they have made our life more efficient and
colorful.Only by making better use of them can we
become the master of life.
第二节(满分25分)
Paragraph 1:
Bales stopped being a curious and concerned hiker, and
began a full-on rescue mission.Immediately,she braved the
increasingly wild and fierce weather to take off the outer
layers of her clothes to cover the motionless man.And then
Bales tried to help the man have some hot water but in
vain.At the very helpless and even hopeless moment,an
idea occurred to her.Quickly collecting some ice and snow,
she began to rub the man's body, from hands to arms, from
toes to legs.Bales knew clearly it was time-consuming and
painstaking, but it was bound to be effective.
Paragraph 2:
Over the next hour, the man began to move and speak.
He first showed the sign of movement through his fingers,
and then opened his eyes.In a weak voice,he thanked
Bales and told her how he lost his way and was trapped
here.Bales kept warming him up until he signaled he could
walk. With the support of Bales, the man finally managed
it back to the car and was sent to the hospital timely.Out
of danger,he said gratefully but for Bales'experience and
skilled rescue,he would never see the beauty of the
world.

people died in national parks from 2007 to 2013;145
deaths in 2014,up from 129 in 2013.You may be lucky,
but there can be hidden danger in some places.
Whether you are hiking, camping or simply taking a

Poor judgment is usually what gets people in trouble.

W:As we all know,an encouraging word to someone
who is down can cheer them up and help them make it
through the day while unhelpful words to someone who is
down can be what it takes to kill them.So we should give
more encouragement to our friends. Here is a story:A
group of frogs were travelling through the woods, and two
of them fell into a deep hole in the ground. When the other
frogs saw how deep the hole was, they told the two frogs
that they had no choice but to die.But the two frogs tried
to jump up out of the hole with efforts though the other
frogs told them to stop. Finally, one of the frogs believed
what the other frogs were saying and gave up.He fell and
died. The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could.
Once again, the crowd of frogs yelled at him to stop the
pain.He jumped even harder and finally made it out. When
he got out,the other frogs wondered if he had heard them.
The frog explained to them that he was deaf.He thought
they were encouraging him all the time.

You've probably visited the Tian'anmen
Gatetower-the landmark building of Beijing,
but you may not have heard of Kuai Xiang.
Along with him,the following remarkable ar-
chitects all took the center stage at their times.
Kuai Xiang (1399-1481)
Tian'anmen Gatetower is universally con-
sidered the brainchild of Kuai Xiang.By fol-
lowing in the footsteps of ancient home-
builders,he successfully presented the Emper-

Visitors are also hooked on its delicate pain-
tings.
Leoh Ming Pei (1917-2019)

in glass boxes at museums. He is always strug-
gling with innovation.Although questioned by
French conservative critics,he still planted a
glass pyramid into the courtyard of the Lou-
vre.His other works include John F.Kennedy
Library,Beijing Fragrant Hill Hotel and Suzhou
Museum.
Zaha Hadid (1950-2016)
In 2004,she became the first woman to
win the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the Nobel
Prize for architecture. She used tricks to maxi-
mize available space. Her fluid-style works pi-
oneer the concept of micro-living.The curves
(曲线)of Guangzhou Opera House perfectly
match the rise and fall of its surrounding
buildings,forming a unique view.
Meng Fanchao (1959-present)
Many people dismissed the building of a
mega bridge as a pipe dream, but Meng Fan-
chao turned this into reality by building Hong
Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.This longest cross-

Louise Gluck has been no stranger to awards
over her long and storied career since her first
publication in 1968.In 1993,she won the Pulitzer
Prize for her collection of poems,The Wild
Iris.And on Oct.8,2020,she became the 16th
woman to win the Nobel Prize in literature
with the Nobel prizes first awarded in 1901.
Gluck was honored "for her unmistakable
poetic voice that, with plain and simple beau-
ty,makes individual existence universal".Of-
ten said to be an autobiographical poet,draw-
ing from the inner parts of her life,"she is not
to be regarded as confessional(自白的)poet.
Gluck seeks the universal,"Nobel Committee
Chair Anders Olsson said in a statement.
Gluck,77,the author of 12 poetry collec-
tions, has been able to turn her life experi-
ences into universal themes covering life, loss,
and loneliness.Because of this,readers have
often found her poetry to be“dark”.However,
47
高中英语选择性必修第三册(外研版)
there is much more than darkness in her voice,
as noted by Olsson."It is frank and also a
voice full of humour and biting wit,"he said.
For example,in her poem Snowdrops,she
uses the coming of spring after winter to show
rebirth of life after death. She leads readers
down a depressing path only to reconnect with
the light at the near end.At the conclusion of
the poem, readers are left to feel the "raw
wind of the new world"as they watch a new
spring. This is often the case in Gluck's poet-

If you could have a superpower, what would
it be?Other than flying and communicating
with someone from his mind (which, let's be
honest,would probably actually be awful),
breathing underwater is one of the favourites.
You can hang out with Aquaman and Ursula,
and when the end of the world comes and
we're all living under water, you'll be fine.
With this in mind,a student at the Royal
College of Art,London has designed a 3D-
printed amphibious(水陆两栖的)device
called AMPHIBIO-essentially a set of gills
(鳃)一for this very purpose.
According to Jun Kamei,a biomimicry
designer and materials scientist,it is "for a
future where humankind lives in the water".
With the world set for a global tempera-
ture increase of 3.2 C (5.7 F)by 2100,ris-
ing sea levels are a very real threat to large
coastal cities, potentially affecting up to 2 bil-
lion people-or 26 percent of the current glo-
bal population.
Kamei's little device uses a specially de-
signed porous(多孔的)material that fills
oxygen again in the water and releases carbon
dioxide. It is inspired by water-diving insects
that create their own little scuba diving set by
creating a protective bubble of air around their
body thanks to their water-proof skin.
The technology is easily 3D-printable too,
which will be great when we need them to-
gether.These“gills”could replace heavy and
clumsy scuba equipment, making it more simi-
lar to free diving but for longer. This could
have immediate applications for underwater
rescue plans-the 12 boys rescued by divers
from a flooded cave in Thailand, for example,
where it took weeks to work out how to get
the boys and the vital breathing equipment
through those narrow tunnels.
So far,the tech has only been tested as a
working model, not actually on humans,so the
dream may have to be on hold for now.And
scaling up and testing on humans is Kamei's
next plan.This may sound unbelievable,but
Kamei insists he has a much more optimistic

vision of the future.
28.What can be inferred about Aquaman and
Ursula?
A.They can read minds.
B.They can breathe underwater.
C.They often cause huge disasters.
D.They can't live underwater.
29.What can we learn about AMPHIBIO?
A.It can produce oxygen in the water.
B.Its user can communicate with others
from their mind.
C.It is the unique useful tool against the
threat of rising sea levels.
D.The designer drew his inspiration from
nature's hidden design.
30.Why did the author mention the rescue of
the boys in Thailand?
A.To present the success of the new de-
vice.
B.To compare the new device with the old
one.
C.To prove the advantage of the new de-
vice.
D.To show the new device is easily 3D-
printable.
31.What is the author's attitude to the future
of the new design?
A.Objective.
B.Indifferent.
C.Doubtful.
D.Critical.

Some termite(白蚁)species have fig-
ured out how to enjoy the shelter of the huge
complex nests that the insects build without

contributing to their construction.They avoid
the full anger of their builder hosts by being
extremely easy-going.
Animals that live in the nests of another
species without affecting them are known as
inquilines.Inquiline termites are unique among
termites in being unable to make their own nests.
Instead, they live in the hallways built by a-
nother termite,Constrictotermes cyphergaster.
Until now,it has been unclear how the two
parties kept peaceful in such tight quarters be-
cause termites are typically very aggressive
towards outsiders.
Helder Hugo at the University of Kon-
stanz in Germany and his colleagues collected
Constrictotermes cyphergaster's nests in the
Brazilian Cerrado and brought them into the
laboratory. They then placed host and tenant
(房客)termites in either open or narrow a-
reas and used video to track and record the
ways in which the two species reacted to each
other.
Right from the start, the inquiline termites
moved around less than their hosts and inter-
acted little with them, even in the much na-
rrower area.“Many times,”says Hugo,“when
two unrelated groups are put together in a lim-
ited space-such as an experimental area-the
outcome is conflict with losses from both sides."
But that didn't happen here.Despite attacks
from host termites, the tenant termites were
obedient.Hosts would bite or attack the in-
quilines with strong chemicals, but their tar-
50
gets never responded in the same way,choo-
sing to flee. Some ignored the hosts complete-
ly.
"We did not expect that they would never
fight back,"says Hugo, noting that the in-
quilines are capable of protecting their own
place with mouths."By preventing conflict
going worse,inquiline termites may consider-
ably improve their chances of living together
with their host termites peacefully."
"Passiveness does not necessarily lead to
defeat,but can be a very useful strategy,sa-
ving energy and resources,”she adds..“Nature
may not always be red in tooth and claw, and
aggression is not any more successful a strate-
gy than cowardice(懦弱).”
32.What is the feature of the inquiline termites?
A.They live in another termite species'
nests.
B.They are aggressive towards outsiders.
C.They like to build their own nests.
D.They are communicative tenants.
33.What do you learn about the experiment in
Paragraph 3?
A.The differences between the two species.
B.The findings of the observation.
C.The living habits of termites.
D.The process of the research.
34.What does Hugo think of the inquiline ter-
mites'living strategy?
A.Aggressive.
B.Unacceptable.
C.Effective.
D.Dangerous.
35.What's the best title for the text?
A.The Characteristics of Termites
B.Passiveness Doesn't Necessarily Lead to
Defeat
C.The Relationship Between Host and
Tenant Termites
D.Termites Use Cowardice to Avoid Their
Hosts Anger

"What's wrong with you,dear?"said Granny
Bell to a little boy,who sat near a wall at the
back of the house. He had a book in his hand,
and tears were in his eyes.
"We have all got a poem called Little Jim
to Learn,"said the boy, whose name was Tom
Blair,"and the one who says the best is to get
a prize from the master.But I don't think I
can learn it.”
“Why not'?”said Granny Bell.
"The boys say that I can't,and that I
need not try,”said Tom in a sad tone..“Don't
mind what the boys say.Let them see that you
can learn it."said his friend.
“But I don't think I can,”said Tom.“It
is so long, and some of the words are so hard.
I know I need not try for the prize. But I
would like to learn the poem as well as I can;
for the boys laugh at me,and call me Slow
Tom'.”
“Well,dear,”said Granny Bell,.in a kind
voice,"if you are slow,and can't help it,try
to be slow and sure,as they say.Look at the
snail on the wall;how slow it is!And yet,if
you watch it,you will see it will get to the top
in time.So just try to learn a few lines each
day,and you may gain the prize in the end.
And when you feel like losing heart, think of
the snail on the wall.”
54
After Granny Bell had said this, she went
on her way.And Tom thought that, though he
could not keep up with the boys,he might run
a race with the snail. So he determined to try
to learn his task by the time the snail got to
the top of the wall.
