M:Jenny, there's an opening for an assistant manager
in our company. You should give it a try.
W:Thank you George,but I've decided to travel a bit
before finding another job.
Text 2
M:Would you mind turning down the TV?
W:Pardon?I can't hear you.
M:Would you mind turning down the TV?I'm
answering the phone.
W:Not at all.
Text 3
M:Good morning.I'd like to speak to Mr.Johnson,
please.
W:Mr.Johnson is not at this office today. He's at the
head office. He's there Monday,Wednesday and Friday
this week.
Text 4
M:Wow,I didn't know you paint.I wish I learned a
hobby.
W:Hobbies are never too late to learn. There are a
variety of classes at the local community college. You
could look into them.
Text 5
M:Today,our program's guest is Nancy,who works
as a photographer for a fashion magazine.Glad to see you,
Nancy!
W:Glad to see you,Ethan!
Text 6
W:David, you look worried. What did you talk about
with the boss?
M:It was about my promotion to be the manager of
112
the company.
W:That's really good news.After all,a higher
position means a higher salary. We need more money to
send our son to go abroad.
M:But I don't think I'm up to the position.It requires
some communicating skills, but I always feel nervous when
facing people.
W:I think you should give it a go.I know you can
learn quickly.Maybe a course in communication will be
good for you.
M:That's a good idea.I'll read the newspapers to find
a proper course.
W:I'm sure you will make it.
Text 7
W:I understand you are writing an article about a
famous painter.Who knew a scientist could have such
interest in the arts!
M:Oh,it's just a post for my personal blog.I research
artists in my free time when the work at the lab isn't too
busy. The piece I'm writing now is about Vincent van
Gogh.
W:I love his work!Who isn't amazed by The Starry
Night?A true masterpiece!
M:Funny enough,van Gogh himself wasn't pleased
with that painting. He felt that it was too unrealistic. But I
think it's very calming.
W:The way he painted light was so unique in his
time. His art must have been very popular then.
M:Actually,he never found success while he was
alive. He lived a hard life and died relatively young. It
wasn't until after he passed away that his work was truly
appreciated.
W:He'd be happy to see how valuable it is now!
Text 8
W:Where are you going for your holiday this year?
M:I'm going to Turkey.
W:Oh,I know Turkey very well.I used to work there
as a tour guide before I came to our company.
M:Did you?How did you get into that?
W:Well, after university I wanted to work in the field
of overseas development. But I needed to clock up some
time living abroad so that they would take me seriously.
Then I met someone who worked as a tour leader and he
told me that his company was on the look-out for tour
guides and that I ought to apply.I mean,it was a great
chance to see some new places.
M:It sounds like a perfect job.
W:Well,it was and it wasn't.Turkey was great,the
scenery,the food,the people.But it wasn't much fun
knowing exactly what you will be doing, what you will be
eating, even what you will be talking about every day for
the next three months. It seemed my whole life was
decided for me.I realized it was not what I was really into.
I needed to be able to do my own thing and work on my
own personal projects. So I left the job.
Text 9
M:Hello, everyone, have you ever heard about the
Sandwich Generation?Actually, this phrase has nothing to
do with food or the people who make sandwiches. It refers
to the generation caught in the middle,or in other words,it
is the middle-aged people who support both their parents
and children whether financially, physically or emotionally.
According to the Healthy China 2030,the average life
expectancy of Chinese people will reach 79 years which is
2 years longer than that in 2018.As people live longer, the
Sandwich Generation is becoming more and more common.
Becoming a part of the Sandwich Generation can affect
your financial status,personal time,health,and career
development.Although both men and women are involved,
women are the ones who are primarily affected. Most
women have common difficulties in dealing with various
aspects including children,older parents,family,work,and
personal well-being.Although they are encouraged to go
into the workforce, nursery supply remains the biggest
problem for them. But I don't think it is an unsolvable
problem. In my opinion,if the government gives financial
support to take care of children and parents,it will greatly
reduce the burden on the Sandwich Generation.
Text 10
I'm here today to tell you about my career as a writer.
I wrote my first novel in 1987.I called it Sunset. However,
it didn't come out until 1996,four years after my first
published novel. After school,I went to university where I
studied law. However,I never practiced law.I was lucky
enough to get a holiday job on a local newspaper as a
reporter,and I stayed there.This,of course,gave me lots
of opportunities to improve my writing skills.I had my
first novel published during that period. It was called
Tango.It wasn't a great success,but it gave me useful
contacts in the publishing world. My second novel,The
Ballet Dancer, was much more successful. It even won a
prize for new novelists.Since then,I've written three more
novels and have also had a couple of collections of short
stories published.At present,I'm experimenting with
writing a play-The List.I feel I'm learning a great deal
from this work...
