One day when I was 12,my mother gave
me an order:I was to walk to the public li-
brary, and borrow at least one book for the
summer. This was one more weapon for her to
defeat my strange problem-inability to read.
In the library,I found my way into the
“Children's Room”.I sat down on the floor
and pulled a few books off the shelf at ran-
dom.The cover of a book caught my eye.It
presented a picture of a beagle.I had recently
had a beagle, the first and only animal com-
panion I ever had as a child. He was my se-
cret sharer, but one morning,he was gone,
given away to someone who had the space
and the money to care for him.I never forgot
my beagle.
There on the book's cover was a beagle
which looked identical(相同的)to my dog.
I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on
the cover. My eyes ran across the title,Amos,
the Beagle with a Plan.Unknowingly,I had
read the title.Without opening the book,I bo-
rrowed it from the library for the summer.
Under the shade of a bush,I started to
read about Amos.I read very, very slowly
with difficulty.Though pages were turned
slowly,I got the main idea of the story about
a dog who,like mine,had been separated
from his family and who finally found his way
back home. That dog was my dog,and I was
the little boy in the book.At the end of the
story,my mind continued the final scene of
reunion,on and on,until my own lost dog and
I were,in my mind,running together.
My mother's call returned me to the real
world.I suddenly realized something:I had
read a book, and I had loved reading that
book.Everyone knew I could not read.But I
had read it.Books could be incredibly won-
derful and I was going to read them.
I never told my mother about my "mira-
culous”(奇迹般地)experience that summer,
but she saw a slow but remarkable improve-
ment in my classroom performance during the
next year. And years later, she was proud that
her son had read thousands of books, was
awarded a PhD in literature, and authored his
own books,articles,poetry and fiction.The
power of the words has held.

book through?
A.He was forced by his mother to read it.
B.He identified with the story in the book
C.The book told the story of his pet dog.
D.The happy ending of the story attracted
him.
26.What can be inferred from the last para-
graph?
A.The author has become a successful wri-
ter.
B.The author's mother read the same book.
C.The author's mother rewarded him with
books.
D.The author has had happy summers ever
since.
27.Which one could be the best title of the
passage?
A.The Charm of a Book

The idea of billions of people going th-
rough a few masks a week during this pan-
demic definitely rings alarm bells, but a team
of researchers in Melbourne may have the so-
lution.
They've discovered that adding millions
of discarded face masks to road-paving(铺
mixtures would actually lower the cost of
Unt1单元测试卷。
the road, while preventing billions of them
from landfills.Just one kilometer of road would
need three million masks, and the polypropy-
lene(聚丙烯)plastic used to make single-
use surgical face masks also increased the
flexibility and durability of the road.
The new material is a mixture of about
2%torn masks,with recycled concrete aggre-
gate (RCA)-a material obtained from waste
concrete and other minerals from destroyed
buildings. This recycled material was found in
the study to be ideal for two of the four layers
generally required to create roadways.Paving
a kilometer of two-way road with the RCA
and three million face masks would result in a
change of 93 tons of waste from landfills.
The final product then is more resistant to
wear than asphalt(沥青),as well as being
cheaper too, provided there was a method for
collecting masks. The research team did a cost-
analysis and found that,at $26 per ton,the
RCA was about half the cost of mining raw
materials, and as much as a third of the cost
of shipping the used masks to a landfill.
The widespread application would be ide-
al for large infrastructure(基础设施)pro
jects.For example,Washington has the 11th
worst roads in terms of unaddressed repairs in
the US.If the damaged roads in Washington
state were repaired with the RCA/mask mix-
ture,it would reuse nearly 10 billion masks,

sparing American landfills hundreds of mi-
llions of tons of trash.
It's said that the team is looking for pri-
vate industry partners or governments willing
to give their plastic mask road an opportunity
for a large-scale test.
28.What does the underlined word "discarded"
mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Recycled.B.Produced.
C.Mixed.
D.Abandoned
29.What is the new material used to pave
ways made of?
A.2%torn masks,concrete and tons of
trash.
B.Polypropylene plastic and building ma-
terials
C.Single-use surgical masks and recy-
cled concrete aggregate.
D.Waste concrete and other minerals from
destroyed buildings.
30.Why are numbers mentioned in Paragraph
5?
A.To tell us what the team has found.
B.To prove this material is costeffective
in paving roads.
C.To explain repairing roads costs a lot of
materials.
D.To praisethehard workthe team has done.
31.What can we learn from the text?
A.The material used to pave roads is made
of masks.

B.Generally speaking,it requires two lay-
ers to create roadways.
C.It remains to be tested whether the solu-
tion is practical.
D.The damaged roads in Washington were

Buying clothes for a special event, hiding
the price tickets and returning them to the store
the next day has for years been the method of
economical shoppers.Today people are doing
it just for social media.
A survey conducted by the credit card
company Barclaycard revealed that nearly one
in ten UK shoppers admits to buying clothing
only to post photos on social media for likes.
After the“outfit(装束)of the day”makes
it online, they return it to the store.According
to Barclaycard,the“try before you buy"”po-
licy of online retailers(零售商)where people
pay for clothing they order online after they
try it on at home could be contributing to this
rising trend.
But the rise of social media has meant
that everyone,not just superstars,expects to
build and maintain a personal brand.Since
we're documenting our lives and posting them
online for public judgment, getting caught in
the same outfits more than once should be
avoided. And the cost of all those outfits of the
day adds up,which makes returning a popular
way.
There are brands that tailor clothes speci-
fically for social media shoppers, like Fashion
Nova."These are clothes made for social me-
dia:meant to be worn once, photographed and
abandoned,"Allison P.Davis wrote in her re-
port about the brand.Another favourite of the
social media age is Rent the Runway, which
lets customers rent designer clothing for a fee.
Some,however,are moving in the oppo-
site direction.Groups promoting "work uni-
forms"have increased greatly in recent years,
aiming to free women from "the annoyance of
clothing decisions'”.The concept of the“cap-
sule wardrobe”(胶囊衣柜),which calls for
purchasing a small number of high-quality pieces
instead of lots of trendy throwaway clothes,is
also making a comeback.
32.What does the survey by Barclaycard in-
dicate?
A.Some Britons send outfits back after
shoots.
B.Britons try on clothes before online
purchases.
C.Britons follow the fashion stars closely.
D.Some Britons over-order and return
clothes.
33.What's Fashion Nova's special service?
A.Renting chargeable designer clothes.
B.Offering customers single-use clothes.
C.Creating unique shopping experiences

34.What's the idea behind the "capsule
wardrobe"?
A.Better fewer,but better.
B.Less addition,but more enjoyment.
C.Less uniform and more freedom.
D.More choices and less annoyance.
35.What's the purpose of the author to write
the text?
A.To compare different wearing trends.
B.To criticize the "try before you buy"
policy.
C.To advocate buying high-quality clothes.
D.Tointroduce Britain'snew wearing trend.

Our Oceans,Our Responsibility
June 8th was officially named by the UN in 2009 as
World Oceans Day.It aims to raise people's awareness of
protecting oceans.
It goes without saying that oceans play a critical role
in the world. Not only do they provide abundant resources
and food for us,but they are also crucial for the global
108
climate development.Additionally,oceans are "the lungs
of our planets",providing most of the oxygen we breathe.
As high school students,it's our responsibility to
protect them.First of all,do what we can to make a
difference. For example, stop throwing garbage into oceans.
In addition, call on people around us to take action, too.I
believe we will have cleaner oceans.

W:Good morning.Welcome to the Reader Centre.
What can I do for you?
M:Hello.I'm quite interested in your weekly reading
event.Could you explain the details of it?
W:Sure.Basically,we read and analyse literature
together, and we regularly invite critics or writers to give
presentations on different topics in literature.
M:That's impressive!
W:We've also noticed that many literature lovers are
eager to create their own work,so a writing workshop will
be set up soon
M:Cool!I'd like to join. What activity is going to be
held this week?
W:We'll study William Wordsworth's poems.Start-
ing at 2 p.m.this Saturday,we will first watch a 20-minute
documentary about the Lake Poets.Then,after a 15-minute
discussion, people can volunteer to read Wordsworth's po-
ems and share their thoughts.
M:Sounds good.Do I need to pay for a ticket?
W:The activity is free, but because it is held in a
cafe, each person is supposed to buy a drink, which costs 2
pounds. We suggest you bring the book or excerpt,or you
can buy one from our staff for 28 pounds.
M:Great!I've got the book.Thank you!

M:Really?Tell me more about that
G:Well,I'll probably be working in a high-tech
school by then.
M:As a teacher?
G:No,as a headmaster!In 2050.students will be able
to study wherever they want as all the teaching will be
conducted online.Most importantly,the high-tech screens
won't do harm to their eyes.
M:Sounds cool, but have you ever thought about the
potential problems with your school?
G:I don't see any problems.
M:Well,in your future school,students won't be able
to meet each other, and they may lack the ability to
socialize with others.
G:I don't agree with you.In the future,almost
everything will happen online, and students will be able to
communicate online.
M:Well, online communication may become a trend,
but I don't think people can socialise effectively without
meeting face to face, and school is the best place for
students to learn social skills.
G:I see what you mean.Anyway,I still stick to my
point of view.

第四部分写作(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(满分15分)
Dear Tom,
I am glad to share with you one of my favourite
books,The Hunchback of Notre-Dame by Victor Hugo.
Published in 1831,it tells a tragic story of events in Paris.
The main story starts with a kidnap.Ugly Quasimodo
was sent to kidnap beautiful Esmeralda but he failed and
fell in love with her.Soon afterwards, when Esmeralda was
persecuted,Quasimodo rescued her and hid her in the
Notre-Dame Cathedral.One day,she was killed,which
happened to be seen by Quasimodo. The killer turned out
to be his master, who had adopted him and had his greatest
respect.Feeling desperate,he killed his master and then
ended his own life.
As is shown in the story, the poor guy with the ugliest
appearance proved to be the one with a beautiful soul.
That's what impressed me most and will push me further in
my life to pursue inner beauty.I hope you'll like it as well.
Yours,
Li Hua
